    I start by limiting myself and allowing for more space and rhythm. So I might start just with guide tones, then triads, arps, adding enclosures, etc. I think it helps me think more about playing melodically and keeps me from just playing a collection of notes.

      Love it David! That's definitely stuff I preach doing as well.

    Great stuff. Your second suggestion is to build solos around the melody and indicated you would link to a video on this topic. Which video is that? Thanks. Tom

    Nice lesson. I like the improv in Db better. Sounds better to my ears. 😊

      It does! Db is such an underrated key to play in.

    Hi Brian, I'd like to buy the band in a box, I'm a pianist. I would like to improve the voices of my agreements in those that the program plays. Is it possible to see the chords (voincings) played in the score or via midi? Thanks for all

      Hey Marcus, yes you are able to see piano voicings in the software, although this isn't usually what people use this software. But it could be helpful!

    I'm fighting with the phrases. Sometimes it looks like a endless phrase, because I don't identify the right moment to resolve the phrase. Your video (with genial simplicity) show me that the best way is to breaking down the chord progression in small pieces. Here in Brazil we have a saying: "Eat the elephant in smal pieces!" - this is the simple secret. Thanks.

    How does Band in the Box compare to iReal Pro? Where do I buy Band in the Box?

  • @kaufmann6988
    @kaufmann6988 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    In Band-in-a-Box you can also just select the bars you want to loop and then press F10 😉

      Ha! Thanks for the pro tip.

      Or F10 is equivalent to the 5th black button from the left in case you forget. Select the region you want to loop and then hit the button. Select Play and Loop Highlighted region and its off to the races!

    1 - write your own solos ! by placing the roots in different beats of the bar 2 - watch out for the direction of your lines 3 - can you sing these written lines? if yes,Then Move the entire solo to another key ! ....You may come out every now and then with new lines in different keys PS - 4 written Pause is very important in Music

    Hey guys a question ....Can I use jazz standards in my videos? The actual music ? Or do we need to go through Harry Fox?

      Hey there! For my videos I plug straight into my audio interface into ProTools. For gigging, I use either a Polytone, or an Acoustic Image Chorus 3

    Practice only with intervals over the chords.(chord tones)

    Believe it or not: playing a classical composition (e.g. a Bach prelude) in a different key is THE method to learn it by heart, because you can only do it if you have completely understood the structure.

    • @Learnjazzstandards
      @Learnjazzstandards  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the insight on the classical side Wolfgang!

      That’s extreme... i never heard of people doing this. Are people doing this with master conservatory level pieces?

    • @gta879
      @gta879 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's extra work without being a necessity. If you achieved the level of changing key it means you practiced enough long to know by heart before. But why not !

    This is not what i thought jazz was, so much rehearsing here, the chord progression the melody. I really imagined the chaos of random chords by random musicians and everyone just playing something off the top of their heads without actually knowing what the chords even are. I am both relieved and disappointed
