Dude, you are awesome! I loved the sound of the Jag 3000. I grew up in AK and my dad bought me one for Christmas 1980; Best Christmas ever. If I ever needed any mechanical knowledge, I would hire you two lifetimes ago. Keep being you and Blessings.
Wow! Have my dads ‘78 jag 2000 f/a. All cleaned up, looks brand new. Not much mileage on her. Runs great. Starts first pull. My problem……….no snow. Live in burbs of Chicago. Drove her around the house a few times last winter, but not getting much use out of her.
15 years ago I picked up a 275 2 cylinder free air jag (I think 1979) for free. It had no spark / non running. I figured out some bad wiring and it ran like a top! I rode that thing for 1 season then sold it at the beginning of the following season for a few bucks. Top speed of about 45mph. Highlight on the machine was when I was hitting shallow open water on the shoreline and the engine was getting drenched with ice cold lake water. It looked like a steam train for a few hundred yards!!!
The 340 lightweight fan engine came along for the 79 model year.. you could buy either fa or FA that year and the next along with the 275 FA twin as a base model. 1981 the only one made was the 440 fan. First model year for that in a Jag. They had too much carryover so if you wanted a 340 for the kids, you bought last year’s leftovers for 1981. I like this model a lot. So many ways to build a sleeper out of it because that bulkhead will accept twins up to a 500 with little work. One pen pal of mine stuffed a massaged 440 Prowler LC engine in one and left the outside original. Won beer money often in short drags lol.
@@2vintage pistons for sure I work at a performance race shop that builds sled motors so I could hone them for u. I haven't taken the cylinders off so I'm not sure condition of the bore. Rode it last year but it had a line come off of the engine and ran lean and lost compression. It's a project for sure lol.
My mxz 800 stuck up the problem was when I first started it this year it had 100 miles on a top end so wasn’t expecting issues but I didn’t pull the plugs went to pull it over pip pop click and she stuck up the problem was the injection oil somehow leaked above the pistons and bent the crank idk how the hell the oil got up there
I had a 3000 jag before but it wasn’t fan cooled it was a free air engine it was pretty fast for what it was . I drove the shit out of it but couldn’t kill it. I love the old sleds nice video man
Hello! Do you have any videos or information on how to install a starter on a sled like this? I have a 1979 Arctic Cat Trail Cat 4000 with the Spirit 440 engine, and it came with an uninstalled starter. Great stuff!
As a kid in the early 1990's, I had a 1979 Jag with the 340 FA engine. No oil injection. Seized it on one of those bright and sunny 30 degree days. Rebuilt it and sold it like an idiot. Still wish I had that sled. Not super quick, but very impressive for its size.
I got that exact same Artic Cat mines not drawing fuel unfortunately and I did check the hose inside of the tank it’s all connected. You think you have an idea what it may be? I’m new to snowmobiles. Thanks.
Fuel pump is weak, check impulse line from engine, also pressurize the gas tank and get the lines full, try spraying gas to keep it going and see if it draws up fuel
The Jag in its day was a real zipper for 30hp. This is based off the 1974 ElTigre, just everything was turned down a notch or three. Sounds like one side is cutting out. Probably got a million hours on it. I suspect a dying ignition module or an air leak in the cylinders from old age. Simple way to tell the exact model year is the first digit in the serial number on these. This hood type came out for the 1978 models. So 8 is a 78 9 is a 79 and 0 means 1980. They did not make the 340 FC for 1981 they only made the 440 that was a new model that year and they sold the leftover Jags from previous years to fill out the line. Yes that’s a Suzuki engine. If this engine has serious issues from old age, you can drop a larger Cat engine in and make a sleeper if the rest of the chassis is straight. The 440 and 500 FC Spirit from a Panther can be adapted. One pen pal dropped in a 440 LC out of a wrecked Prowler and made a wicked sleeper out of it. 62 plus hp in a little Jag is like 120 in a new heavy sled. Top end about doubled (Close to 90mph) They should have named that sled FreeBeer as anything newer 500 cc and under was lunch on a flat field. That’s another story. Enjoy.
@@bearkreekboys Yea check all the gaskets too. When these air cooled engines get old that's usually on the replacement parts list. They dry out out and leak. I had the FA 2000 version that I heavily modified over the years for fun. One sunny day the PTO side jug head temp gauge spiked. I shut it off and let it cool, pulled the head off. Blown head gasket from the nuts working loose on the head. Burnt right through the metal ring like a tiny torch. I caught it before the piston was damaged. Decarboned the burnt spots, new gasket and torqued it back to specs. Ran for a few more seasons until I sold it. Sorry to hog space. Just so many memories....enjoy. In the words of Buffy "I'm shutting up now." 😃
I have one of these and the screw on the front of the carb is 1/2 to 3/4 from what I'm reading. My 79 was registered in 80 and sat in a garage until a couple of years ago when a guy bought It . He rode it around his little yard for a couple of years and when the gas went bad and it wouldn't start sold it to me. I took the oil injector off. It's an awesome sled to ride around my property.

Thank you much! Appreciate that greatly
It starts- It runs-it drives and has clear papers. Would be a 2000 dollar sled here in Canada.

Twin clylinder two stroke sleds sounds so mean ! Hope to see someone sending this rig at some point
He'll yeah! Honestly considering turbo it and send it I have a spare manifold and exhaust muffler so if I butcher it I can still run it haha
Que the turbo noises and pull a skier with it ! I'd be so down to hook onto it !
Cool. I thought 79 JAG's were Free Air not Fan cooled. I guess i was wrong.
Both fan and freer I believe
@@bearkreekboys ya thanks. I went and googled. You are correct. And even had a Kawasaki free air for 1 year before going to Suzuki.

I need to find one of these for $40! Nice find!
Yes u do! I have a project one that needs a top end of ur interested! $50 u can have it
I come across so many...
@@bearkreekboys top end as in cylinder and piston or just piston?
@@bearkreekboys where do you find them? I have been looking. All are in the 150 plus range and they are usually beat bad

Never have done that I'm not exactly sure
Oh crap . I’m a year late. Did you find the notes to do this? I have the 79 TC shop manuals.
the writing on the drive belt always faces outward. Just noticed that on the phazer
These may only be 30hp but they are very small and light. Not a screamer but snappier than you’d expect. You can damn near pick these things up.

I knew you got one lol! Nice!
Are you the guy I sold 2 srvs to a couple years ago?
Maybe
What is your air fuel screw set to. Are you in the 1 to 1.5 turns out?
Those have the fuel screw in front and yes about 1.5 to 2

You guys should turbo one of them or build big boy engine
I could try that yeah! Cheap eBay turbo haha
Put a vmax 600 twin In it
That would be a hell of a swap!! We are already put a 440 in one and it was tighttt
dang i got mine for 200😔
Ah that's too bad. Normally go forever
