it seems you changed your video format. this one is too much information but a professional look did you sign in for a producer whats the name so I can do videos like this, how much the cost? I'm 70 like you
All problems could be resolved by simply cutting the defense budget from 1 trillion a year to 100 billion a year. You have 900 billion to do EV infrastructure and left over for free health care. Just saying. China has shown how to do it. Does American gov have the common sense to do the right thing for the people?
I have another solution for u; how about Americans start eating less, so they dont have to oversize everything. Smaller cars, smaller batteries and less pressure on the grid and roads... On a serious note though, electrifying is not an issue if we can make the resource chain better. EVs are already better, over their lifespan than any gas/diesel vehicle by a far margin, but the real issue is people thinking they need 2-3-4 vehicles in a family. All the effort going into EV would have been better utilized if we used it all on public transport instead.
Yes we should have cars more akin to gold karts. Maybe they have to stay in the right many in the highway or something. It’s how you know we don’t actually care. You don’t need a 2 ton sadan to go to the grocery store.
I worked for a grocery distribution center. They filled the entire trailer. Top to bottom front to back. I also worked at Walmart stores. Their trucks were packed solid too. It would be stupid for an ev truck to roll down the road 2/3 full. Dangerous too. One of the reasons a truck is that packed is to help prevent weight shift. If 50k lbs shifts from right to left then that truck will roll over. Even at a slow speep
I don't disagree, but I was the GM of a major HVAC DC in Atlanta. We always filled our trailers max with AC equipment. The thing is, AC equipment is bulky, but mostly air, so we rarely exceeded 35K lbs for a full 53' trailer. The EV trucks would work in some shipping scenarios.
If you have to move x tons if goods it will take many more trips with an EV truck. You are paying a significant cost in energy and road maintenance just hauling the weight of the batteries.
Yep, and yet no one says about 3 years later, you might have to replace the battery in your EV! And then you have to charge your EV! (duh) But it has to get the energy from the grid, which is *mainly* coal, natural gas, and nucular. And in *any* state change or conversion, you lose efficiency, so having a EV is *worse* for the environment if you care about that. And people think they are helping when they are not. And as mentioned in the video, the roads are a nightmare when having heavy vehicles. Being in leesburg VA sucks!! The roads are so bumpy, the sidewalk would be better to drive on. I also want to point out that people that say "EV's are quieter", yes but that's because of environmentalists saying "OMG, having a big engine is bad, it needs to be small!", and making these 4 cylinder 1.6L turbocharged cars loud, and with the problems of turbo lag, loud engine, and if the turbo fails, get your wallet out, thats a 12k repair. It's also not like you save gas as the engine has to work *way* harder to keep up. My 2017 Genesis G80 3.8 AWD is quiet AF, and its gas... I also want to point out I don't *hate* EV owners, its what they want and that's fine. I am just saying that these newer cars made these problems for themselves.
@@Walter-wo5sz Thanks for proving my point but you left out trolleys that big oil bought up and replaced with diesel buses, but you keep helping them out, I’m sure you’re rewarded like their CEOs!
@@Walter-wo5szYes. As a former trainman I can attest those long haul engines have an electric generator that is driven by a 2,000 horsepower supercharged diesel motor. It's about 15 feet long with 12 or 16 cylinders. It burns gallons to the mile, not miles per gallon.😊😅
Fantastic work Scotty. My neighbour has a Electric Jeep he has had to leave it on the side of the road so many times when travelling around the UK for work he told me. Nowhere to charge the thing.
"electric cars are a scam" "here are the best electric cars to buy" I used to really like this site, but I think I've seen the announcement that its going to be 'shut down' about three dozen times.
Australia's major production of electricity is %70 coal and gas,we also provide a large amount of lithium. Now the major lithium producer is laying off 300 workers cos they cant sell the lithium, the market is saturated.
They like to steal catalytic converters too, they even shot an actor dead because he caught them doing that. No catalytic converter on an EV to steal. And it's not very practical to steal the battery!
I owned 5 of Corollas some 23 years old and I brought all of them used but low mileage. I put 190K miles on each of them and it cost $425.00 for repair including all fulid replacements. No major repair.
@@PaulMilenkovic Timing belts can last 200k miles, they tell you to change them from an abundance of caution. If it looks good with no cracks or fraying you are good. I change the timing belt on my old Toyota because it's so easy my wife did it last time, belt, idler and tensioner. It was already 10 years old then and nothing wrong when I visually inspected it.
I spoke with someone here in Minnesota outside the local Post Office last winter. I asked him how he liked his Tesla. His response was that his employer had FREE charging and that he loved it. Then I asked him about range in the cold weather. His response was that he only got about 1/2 the range in the winter. As long as someone else is paying, these early adopters would appear to love their EVs. I imagine that once they need to pay the bill themselves, they will be singing another tune . . . especially in the winter months!
@@PM-wc1lpit’s cheaper until gas vehicles are replaced and then cost of electricity sky rockets due to demand. like OP said, early adopters enjoy their teslas because they aren’t paying for it. How efficient is lithium mining? there’s not enough rare earth minerals to produce EVs globally
My favorite fact about electric cars, is that you shouldn't live in a cold environment... bec they lose charge in cold weather. Might as well poke holes in your gas tank. You get the same effect.
Fritolay is the lightest load there is, a trailer full of chips, hardly puts any strain on the truck. The draw back is, it’s loaded by hand, and the trailer is dropped and picked up the next day...
I refuse to buy any Pepsi or Frito-Lay product after their bullying policies, such as extorting the Washington Redskins out of existence, assassinating Aunt Jemima. No Doritos, Mtn. Dew, Quaker Oats, Gatorade either. Are they also the ones that assassinated the girl on Land O Lakes? We don't have to put up with unflinching bullying companies.
Heavier vehicles create Higher impact if they crash. Higher impact means crashes will be deadlier! Tires and roads will wear out faster too! and then when the vehicle is old and worn out, what do we do with the toxic batteries?
Right you are! And another "hidden cost" will be, when insurance companies charge higher premiums if you own an EV. Which is exactly what they will do!
Heavy trucks do almost ALL the damage to our roads, but you are right about the tires on EV's. Your average pickup outweighs any EV anyway. As for crashes, it's all relative to the mass of the 2 vehicles involved, the heavier the vehicle, the safer it's driver is and that has always been the case, so no, more EV's does not equate to more deaths in accidents
Funny how In California, It is more complicated to keep my 1995 Nissan truck registered and smog tested vs forced to buy EVs which I'm sure pollute more when they build them.
@@ramonjrusa It took me 4 test attempts at state referee before I found a real mechanic instead of a parts changer. I was also making a mistake of going to smog test only centers to diagnose those guys don't know squat but to tell you guesses.
I can relate....I had a 1998 Tacoma that I absolutely loved. I had to get rid of it because it would pass smog. I spent thousands trying to get it passed. I swear CA they set me up so it would never pass
It’s really no more complicated than weight and resources. Current EVs weigh more and hence use more resources (material) to manufacture. The extra weight per axle means extra force (KW or HP) is required to overcome friction and move the vehicle. To create the extra force, extra fuel must be consumed, in this case at the power plant. To deliver the extra fuel (electricity) extra power lines and associated transformers, circuit breakers, distribution panels, etc etc etc
@@alexr.8397what is the drop off in efficiency of an electric motor and battery system vs ICE? transmission loss and power factor impact of charging? With an ICE, the power production is Internal. It’s right at the source, it is quite literally Internal Combustion. the overwhelming number of EVs in the US are not charged by people with on-site solar or wind etc. what is the time value/cost and EOL comparison? A Toyota Camry will be an excellent vehicle for +20 yrs, +300k miles, and will not require a new engine. How many miles/yrs does the battery last on a typ Tesla? What happens when the battery is spent? How many tires did the Tesla blow through in 300k miles vs the Camry? Tire manufacturing is pretty environmentally aggressive. the entire EV system IRL is massively inefficient and environmentally destructive and super selfish.
@@chuckblytheIt's not at source though, your fuel doesn't magically appear , it has to be extracted , heat treated , mixed with chemicals , and then regularly shipped to tiny filling stations , if you ignore all of that your argument is valid but if you account for logistics it's much more efficient to burn gas and send the energy down a cable that only has to be built once
That's right! Tesla is hiding this so you would continue to vote Republican which, Scotty, as we know, is a full-blown Democrat ;-) 😂 ( sorry I couldn't resist trying to point out the absurdity of your comment. Or at least how I interpret it. I think what you meant to imply is "it's all about getting you to buy the car" )
I live in an apartment in the northern Denver suburbs, and don't see any way of realistically getting an EV in the near future. I'm looking right now at hybrids so I'm not stuck trying to charge an EV at public charging stations. Wish Tesla would make hybrids.
So how long before the bums in California that are stealing the wiring out of traffic lights realize that they can get a bunch for the wire in the charging stations
They already have. Multiple charging stations in California and elsewhere have been vandalized and cables stolen. All for a few dollars worth of copper.
@@lowellwhite1603 imagine a world where renters are fistfighting for charging spots to trudge to a job in a declining economy, just to find out half of the things are inoperable thanks to the swarm of fentanyl crackheads cracking electronics. No thanks, i will not be living in cyberpunk L.A.
Hey Scotty! Much the same scenario at your northern neighbor, after all Canada is "America Lite" and only clocks 1/30th of the same EV problems (and there are many).
I don't think the technology is good enough to appeal to anyone but a few enthusiast and environmentalist. The electrify grid and technology is certainly not ready for EVs to go mainstream.
That seems to be all of PA, roads are better in Florida where I'm at now. Not GOOD mind you, just better than they were in PA (I'm originally from Pittsburgh)
I drive a Tesla Model 3 and it’s the best car I’ve ever had. Having said that, I would NEVER keep that car if I didn’t also own my house or didn’t have a dedicated charging spot only for me. They’re not for apartment complex living unless the level 2 chargers become standard in apartment complexes. Very interesting analysis on the wear and tear on roads, which I had never thought about. Gives me something to think about the next car I buy when the time comes.
Why not just tax the rich and have them pay their their fair share? The same amount %% as you and me.Then we would have money to fix our roads and keep russia from taking over
@@DarrinRose-k4r they already pay their fair share. Now you want to put them out of the business closed thousands and thousands of people. That would be just plain crazy and believe me Russia is not taking over we would not allow that.
@Gary.g19 Trump told Russia to do whatever the hell they want. He Trump is not pro American he is anti-American filled with Greed. All he wants is his money & power
@@PM-wc1lp make even a quarter of those into electric 18 wheeler will increase net road weight by a lot. gas cars catch more often but are easily extinguished. ev's can ignite or explode with no external heat or oxygen, take hours and hundreds of gallons to put out, by that time they've released a very non-green amount of fumes and endanger firefighters while obstructing roadways.
@@PrinceArthur636. Or you can place an EV fire blanket over it, that most fire companies are deploying, but being 25 out of 100,000 EV fires compared to 1500 out of 100,000 ICE cars catching fire, it seems your final summery may be off.
I was born and raised in downtown Manhattan. They will destroy the chargers faster than they could build them. If you try to put them in a garage, to rent a spot is 450 to 650 a month just to park your car, it will be atheist 850 to 1000 a month if they let you charge.
My family moved from Brooklyn to nj in mid 00s because parking was a humongous problem which made our apartment unlivable. Can only imagine it now with all the dumb mopeds and bikes and more cars and people there are now
That's the point. You will live in the 15 minute city, you will walk or use public transit, you will live in the pods, eat the bugs, own nothing and be happy... or else.
DC fast chargers suffer from the same issue that smart phone chargers do. The faster u charge something at a quick pace, the more you degrade the phones battery. Same concept with any battery.
Your phone have battery temperature management? And you charge it to 100% every night a keep it there fore the whole night? So not be surprised it degrades...
All my cars are over 20 years old. NO ev will last that long as the cost of a new battery easily exceeds the value of an EV after a few years. Which means I will never own an ev even if I wanted one.
Yes batteries are a problem for now. Electronics can fail on either ice or ev. However the motor part, that's very reliable. It can survive beyond a lifetime. If they cud resolve battery problems like weight, charging time, cost, safety, it will be more reliable than any ice car. But that's a big "if" to achieve.
will need to more than double the transmission capacity but also the power production and them install and maintain a expensive recharging structure this is insane
@@phonetech1922 few people have EVs if everyone has EVs and and they all have to charge during night/morning the grid will need to more than be doubled this is an ongoing issue debated at various goverments, you will also need to make a lot more eletricity, keep in mind building a dam or a nuclear power plant can take a decade, you can also burn coal or diesel in easier to build powerplants but it defeats the whole purpose of EVs, a diesel truck can tow double the cargo for longer with easier logistics and no costly battery replacement, eletricity was always used since wwii, in ships and submarines, because they go on water, the moment you put cargo on an EV their range decreases astronomically unlike ICE wich has a much better efficiency at pulling heaving weights, keeping good torque without increasing consumption by much, the only way eletricity can become a replacement is with much better batteries and nuclear powerplants everywhere, but people are scared of living near nuclearpowerplantd so goverments tend to no build enough of them and also decomission a lot of them over the years thanks to ignorance, also lots of countries already face blackout due to an aging power network wich is costly to maintain
Government created this problem, and government will insist on fixing the problem that they either created or doesn't exist. By SPENDING YOUR MONEY on deductions and incentives. Just vote them out if they vote yes on spending. Besides, heard about the national debt?
@@Bill_Woo Too true! But I don't know too many people who gave personal vehicles over 6,000lbs curb weight, maybe it's not the problem you think it is among ICE vehicles. Business vehicles are tax deductible. You can't very well expect heavy deliveries to be made in the back of a 74 Honda Hatch.
All that weight is also why tire replacement is more frequent.Hertz rental gave all of their tesla vehicles back and mentioned that the tires was wearing out so fast
@@torcik by being around 2/3 the weight, but even those are causing issues. Giant trucks and suvs are a problem too, but make them electric and now you have an even bigger issue
multi-story parking garages with ev cars and trucks on many levels if they are abundant, when we already have crumbling infrastructure and building collapses😬
Something nobody talks about: an ICE vehicle barely consumes any energy while it's not in operation. EVs consume more, and in extreme temperature environments significantly more. I drive 3000 km a year, with and ICE vehicle that's barely a few hundred dollars. In an EV it would be more, since I would have to keep the battery around 50-80% charge even in -20 or +30 degrees Celsius. Even a hybrid is probably not an efficient option for me.
That varies wildly per car. Teslas lose about 1% a day. On average EVs lose 2-3% a MONTH. I left my car for a month while away... it lost 1% of charge... or 0.7kwh, which is like 20 cents?
@@frankd.brennan6520 I think it's never brought up as it's a non issue? Cost is maybe $3 per year. Phantom drain which is what you're describing doesn't vary by age of battery - is more to do with the added connectivity in a lot of the EVs (often pinging WiFi/downloading app updates, topping up 12v battery etc)
@SuperKimjong it's common knowledge that quick charges will shorten battery life and cold heat and moisture are big enemies of electricity. To many holes and they don't even know what batteries or charger plug it's going to be. Solve more of the problems by letting people work from home if it's such a dire need to save the planet
Good one Scotty. and you heavent even mentioned about the many fires that electric cars are involved in and the extra cost of home insurance with electric cars etc. etc. we could go on for a lot longer.
Road lifespan is mostly affected by the heaviest vehicles - big trucks. Think of the deformation. As long as the deformation is within the elastic limits and springs back, lifetime is very long. But get to the point where it deforms and doesn't spring back, it is destructive, like bending a piece of glass until it breaks. A big truck weight 20x as much can be 100x more destructive. So a Ford lightning weighing 2x as much is not a big deal. The trucking industry has always been good and getting congress to allow heavier trucks on roads above the design limits. Effectively the trucking industry is subsidized by congress and passenger cars. The railroad industry pays property taxes on rail lines, just the opposite.
My boss got his top of the range Tesla for free at work, he used to take a few of us out for lunch. I was terrified of his driving, he couldn't modulate power, had no spatial awareness, and every week was in the Tesla garage because he dinged a new part of the car. I do wonder what the car could achieve with someone who could drive. Personally the whole EV movement seems like a government scam to drive growth.
our trucks at work are govern at 65MPH so we can't go faster than 65 MPH unless your driving a condo then you can only do 67 for a brief time with Pas Smart.
I dare someone to maintain the speeds you mention carrying fresh strawberries from California to New York before the whiskers grow on them and the load is refused.
Pepsi is one of the worst woke bullies. They extorted Washington to myrrh dur the courageous and legendary Redskin image. Assassinated Aunt Jemima. If you want to not drink Pepsi, also Mtn. Dew, Quaker Oats, Cap'n Crunch, Doritos, Lays, Cheetos, and Gatorade. All part of the Pepsi woke empire.
💯 on spot, U nailed it Scotty, ELON MUSK will be angry man after seeing this video 😅 afterall so called environment friendly isn't that friendly at all. Tesal shares will drop after this video 😅 EV bubble is going to burst sooner than later.
A typical Semi can't haul 60,000 plus worth of cargo. You forgot the weight of an empty trailer. Typically they can haul 45,000 and weight around 35,000 empty. Flatbed and dry van trailers are lighter and can haul more. Limits I said are for a long haul tractor and reefer unit on the trailer. Flatbed would be around 30,000 empty and could haul 50,000 LBS.
@anthonydilligaf823 I think the day will come, that Americans will want a thinking real person who gets into logic , instead of the slick style we have now A days
You can spin data anyway you want. A pickup weighs more than my ioniq5. An awful lot of pickups aren't used for business but are just personal cruisers. We all know pickups are one of the best selling vehicles. So there's that. 😅
'Fraid that's not the case. You'd be surprised how businesses cut their own throat just to keep the natives trembling. They do that all the time with "indispensable" employees that don't swallow the narrative, even losing money - just to keep the peasants in fear.
Charging the tractors will be marked in seasons! After a delivery in the spring, it will be summer or fall before it will be charged enough to return home! 😅
Fantastic video, the answer is we just need fewer people that NEED to drive to get to where they want to go. More public transit (buses in the short term but train networks in the long term), complete networks of bike infrastructure, more walkable neighborhoods, etc. EV's will be part of the future in the sense that lots of people will have one that they use infrequently, for specific trips or purposes. People need to be able to get to where they need to go on a daily/weekly basis without a car more often.
@robertkubrick3738 Absolutely false, it doesn't work as well for truly rural areas but that is not where 90% of the population lives. Many suburbs can be in-filled with additional density and/or can be made more accessible by bike. Also, this isn't a debate we have the luxury of having, we cannot keep burning oil the way we do now forever. EVs are not going to be ready in time and car dependency is a cancer anyways. Public transit/bike infrastructure/walkable environments aremore sustainable and literally makes people happier and healthier. Building 20+ lane highways so we all sit in traffic anytime we want to go anywhere is dystopian as f**k.
@robertkubrick3738 I was talking about the climate not caring about our desired timeline, what with the whole every year being the hottest on record and all...
...oh I think that's only tip-of-the-iceberg stuff! These master planners seem to think we live in a world where senseless vandalism and theft do not exist.
Scotty, we are about the same age. I am in awe, you are a legend. This video really puts EV and a lot of supposedly "green" alternatives into perspective - and it all makes sense. We remember from high school, for any given amount of mass, it takes a certain amount of energy to move it from one place to another. Changing energy sources and types may allow minor adjustments but nothing more than fine-tuning. There are no free lunches, no perpetual motion machines. Amazing list of car resources - I have checked out some of these and copied the list onto my computer for future use. You have created an online car bible for the world. What an astounding legacy!

Drove back to the Netherlands from Italy two weeks ago. Took me 3,5 hour extra because there was a Tesla on fire on the autobahn.

It's also not like you save gas as the engine has to work *way* harder to keep up.

lol, untrue
It’s really no more complicated than weight and resources. Current EVs weigh more and hence use more resources (material) to manufacture. The extra weight per axle means extra force (KW or HP) is required to overcome friction and move the vehicle. To create the extra force, extra fuel must be consumed, in this case at the power plant. To deliver the extra fuel (electricity) extra power lines and associated transformers, circuit breakers, distribution panels, etc etc etc

I left my car for a month while away... it lost 1% of charge... or 0.7kwh, which is like 20 cents?

wow Scotty you went all out to provide information. I like it
Road lifespan is mostly affected by the heaviest vehicles - big trucks.

There's no way these EV's will last on the road.
Thre is no way that EV cars, trucks, and EV 16 wheelers are just an interim swindle brought to you by the forces of darkness. (;-)
How do you know?
@@torcik There are many testimonials about them out there.
@@t5ruxlee210stop with the antisemitism lol
@@jeromedavis8575 Like the million mile tesla that went through 14 drive motors one every 70k miles and 4 battery replacements?
Fantastic video, the answer is we just need fewer people that NEED to drive to get to where they want to go. More public transit (buses in the short term but train networks in the long term), complete networks of bike infrastructure, more walkable neighborhoods, etc.
EV's will be part of the future in the sense that lots of people will have one that they use infrequently, for specific trips or purposes. People need to be able to get to where they need to go on a daily/weekly basis without a car more often.
Public transit only works where population is dense which isn't 90+% of the USA. You need to live in NYC so You can be happy.
@@Casual_Stroll It's a debate I have the luxury of having. I hope you don't do yourself a mischief thinking we don't.
@robertkubrick3738 I was talking about the climate not caring about our desired timeline, what with the whole every year being the hottest on record and all...
I wouldn't want to live in an apartment that has connected garages with ev chargers in it because of the increased fire risk
...oh I think that's only tip-of-the-iceberg stuff! These master planners seem to think we live in a world where senseless vandalism and theft do not exist.
that might bring rent prices down at least lol
They will collapse from the weight first and then the fire that will burn itself out, but it's got a lower carbon footprint lol true story
There is no increased risk though. You're misinformed, as magas generally are.
EV fires 25 per 100,000, ICE fires 1500 per 100,000, hybrid fires 3000 per 100,000 !
I have a PHEV and I don't care how you calculate the costs. I am happy paying the oil companies over 90% less than I did before I bought my PHEV.
How about a 10 liter V16? Then the weight for ICE and battery would be closer!
Well, his channel is still up!
