derek jones good call and I totally agree. I've heard this on other Garstka videos also. I have the same cymbal but when I record, it is definitely not that dry. Must have dampening on the underside. Maybe it's a new Meinl Byzance Extra EXTRA Dry China.
jvstndrvms that's what I thought at first too but if you watch it throughout the video, the cymbal has much flex to it disproving this theory. When my extra dry is this loosely tightened, it is definitely not this muffled. The mystery continues....
Yeah they both are the masters of the hybrid herta rudiment its very simple to play on feet by themselves but once you start adding the cymbal work and snare/tom work it requires whole new level of practice and independence work
4:23 most headbang-worthy moment in all of AAL history. This part goes so hard and i cant help but stop what I’m doing and jam out every time it comes on. Such an epic ending. Its a shame the china is so weak in this mix :(
I noticed they even flipped the lead melody on guitars into low range to make it even heavier than the first time. Seem’s like it’s always more well crafted than we realize. Edit: I actually disagree with the last part because I didn’t see any Chinese people at all..
Percussive. For years I've realized that I've never known THAT ONE WORD, the word that could describe music I like. I guess that's why Djent+anyothergenre resonates so much with me. Yeah..it did..the accent the notes the way of hitting it was damn cool...but the sound of that china didn't crash out as it should be....mic placement or may be something else
To think that the best drummers in the world literally study this guy to improve their drumming is insane. It's crazy that anyone is at this level of talent on drums.

Ok, this is for all the haters out there! By a show of hands or (likes and dislikes), in this case.... How many of you out there that was hating on the China cymbal, have their own endorsement? It's free and he plays better than I do! I've been playing for over 40 years and my kit isn't an AMATURE type of setup! I've got a 7 piece DW kit with the matching 9002 pedals and Roto toms Tama octobons and 9 cymbals including a $1500 Sabian Paragon signature 22" ride! He's still kicking my ass with the shit he does!!! I seen a reply about how someone was wishing for his left arm...... No BS! He is INCREDIBLE!!!
Backpfeifengesicht - German compound word for "a face that should be slapped." Essentially what I turned into when I saw this video. Great job as always, Matt!
HOW could 16 people downvote this?? Jesus man. Matt is an absolute legend on the drums! Saw AAL live in Winston Salem NC a few years ago. And I was absolutely blown away!
His timing changes on his feet, so, he's definitely counting!!! His feet follow the guitar so......! He's got a time signature for his feet which is running with the guitar and he's got a different time for his right hand crashing the China, that nobody seems to like, and a different time for his left hand!!! Can anybody figure out how to count all that?!!??!!!???
its all in 4/4, the kick pattern is 5 1 3 1 (repeat that 4 times) 1 - 1 1 the dash is where the snare hits at the end, so yeah, its more just figuring out the pattern and getting it up to tempo! edit: each number is how many 32nd notes there are in a group, so 5 hits, then 1, then 3 then 1
@@trextonhaldeman323 I think it would just be easier to count it as groupings of 4 and 3 and then 4 at the end so 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 4 ect… but thats just me. I personally think this way because I’m not necessarily feeling the 32nd notes individually, rather I’m feeling the stronger beats and the spacing between them. (ONE-e-and-uh TWO-e-and-UH three-e-and-UH four-e-AND-uh … u get the gist)
As a Bavarian and, in a way, German, I eagerly await the Bavarian extension to "Backpfeifengesicht", which is "Freibierlätschn", as a future track! Nice choice for a Songtitle! (Almost as good as Ritchie Blackmore's "Weiss Heim" and "Vielleicht das nächster Zeit"... still don't know what this supposed to mean, Backpfeifengesicht hits immediately)
The coffee break was hilarious. And brilliant. You need to be a coffee lover to be able to pull this, the ammount of energy to study and practice to achieve this is tremendous.

Obviously incredible performance by Matt but am I the only one disappointed in how little sound comes out of that China??

Matt Gartska plays ghost notes like how Gordon Ramsay uses salt and olive oil
Just a touch.
Just one, one and a half tablespoons of ghost notes.
That explains the lack of lamb sauce.
Dude - his left hand technique is my favorite part of his playing...so envious...
Hahaha. That comment made my day :)
