The ammo racks on the sides are for anti-tank landmines. The M20 and M8 were intended to be used as recon vehicles in the cavalry role, similar to how Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicles are used today. Part of their core mission as cavalry scouts is to be able to conduct screening missions for a larger force. This usually encompasses having a short, sharp fight against an attacking enemy before falling back to the main defensive line. Anti-tank landmines are a key part of punching above your weight as a cavalry screen against a stronger attacking force. TOW missiles work better, but they hadn’t yet invented those.
