America couldn’t conquer Afghanistan, not for ability, it was because of B.S. politics and the R.O.E. That handicapped US while fighting an enemy with no rules. Also, the defense industry’s desire for a never ending war to fund Raytheon, Halliburton and the like.
I have nothing against Volk, he seems like a nice guy. But unfortunately some things in the service history of his father just don't add up. For example, it is highly unlikely he could've been deployed as an advisor to Vietnam "in the late 70s" when the war ended in 1975. Even if that was the case (perhaps he was sent to assist the vietnamese in the invasion of Cambodia in December 1978?) it leaves a very short window for his supposed deployment to Afghanistan (where soviet involvement started in 1979) and his defection to America that according to Volk himself happened around 1982. But I will happily give him the benefit of the doubt and assume Volk just didn't exactly remember the details of the Vietnam war and actually meant to say "early 70s". One thing that just sounds straight up impossible though is a deployment in Chechnya. First, because the war there took place in 1994-1996 (so around the time of Volk's birth in America) and continued with less intensity as a counter terrorist operation until the early 2000s. So, not only way after the fall of the USSR but a long time after Volk's father defection to the US. I think that the story in general may be true, but unfortunately plagued by ignorant statements and exaggerations that make it confusing. Again nothing wrong with any of those, it's not his fault if his ignorant about some niche historical topics, though I also can see how people would see it as contradictory for someone so invested in the topics to make such mistakes. But even then Volk said he heard them a long time ago and doesn't remember the details. Regarding the russian mafia tattoos...I wouldn't know, he implies he was part of a russian ethnic gang at some point but it's not even clear wether it was a criminal group or a nationalist political organization of some sort. To be honest he just said that he got them at different stages of his life, if I understood correctly he himself said that they are just "russian designs" not necessarily symbols of affiliation. People get "criminal though guys" tattoos all the time by the way, so I don't understand why anyone would care as much as some people in this comment section do. Evidently Volk just feels fascinated by russian criminals and wants to look like them. Maybe it's poseuring but a very harmless form of it frankly.
