Grants is a great little town in western New Mexico. I was at one time a major Route 66 oasis. It's been on a downward trend since the 90s, but it is still hanging in there as a business and tourist center. It has a great radio station, KDSK (94.7) I recommend tuning in while around the area. Also streaming on the Internet. Great oldies. No Top 40 lists. Grants has about zero good jobs, all the work is in the tourist/service sector. Grants at one time held the dubious title of having most of its businesses out of business. I think that's changed. They had a lot of competition for that honor. But I like the town. Too bad there isn't much to do there. If you can, stay over or stop in and eat.
What do the people do here for work? I live in the 4 corners area of NM. I visit family down in southern NM and I always passed through grants as a kid with my dad. Never knew what the people did to survive down there.
I left in 2004, the coal mine was the main employer. There used to be 4 prisons there and that employed a lot of people. But since 2 have closed. A lot of people drive out to Sky City and work back then. I’m not sure now. It’s small jobs like the grocery stores, the gas stations, restaurants, court houses. It takes a lot of employees to run a town, and most of the people in the town just make low wages because for some reason our culture doesn’t value retail work.
Thanks for visiting Grants. We are a wonderful small city full of friendly people. I hope you can stay awhile next time and see the sites. You can visit our website www.cityofgrants.net to see all the events in our area.
I was born in Bluewater '59, a couple of miles down from where you took the exit out of Grants. Lived in Milan, left about '69 or early '70 which is past the the exit out on the right. Grants use to be a Uranium Boom town, but that finally died out in the early 80's and most of the old buildings seen were from that time.
Kerr McGee Mining co. ...in the late 70s the area was booming Grants population at that time climb to almost 20,000 thats including Milan & San Rafael with it....remember the stores Piggly Wiggly..Gambles..Sears..Alco..J.C.Penney Co...modeOday..Krogers..Bealls...Hobo Joes restaurant...Dairy Queen ..Fox photo..fotomat..McMahans furniture.
I lived here from 1989-1993 and then left to finish out my last year of high school in a place that might as well have been on another planet: Highland Park in Dallas, Texas. It was a simpler time and Grants was definitely a simpler place, at least in some respects. Oh, look, there's the Monte Carlo!
theres a jail womans and mens prison bnsf railroad walmart bars hotels junkyards carsales bodyshops weedstores restaraunts big high school , go pirates parks with city of Grants employees lots of unemployed drug addicts
It's about to become a ghost town , we just lost the refinery , 2 of 3 prisons if the bill passes. The coal mine is close to closing , lost the power plant.. this place sucks ass
I bought some land there...out away from people...nice place to retire,, definitely not to work.. but yeah a lot of places closing..it is like a ghost town.
@@abovethelanes at 6:03 thats all thats left of it. one would think with that sign kinda being a big deal for travelers they might restore it but .....
Back in the old days Grants had alot of stores there when the mines were booming ...I remember they had a Sears store at the Lobo canyon Mall on Roosevelt Ave with a Smiths which is still in business as of today...Alco, Piggly Wiggly, Gambles, Hobo Joes restaurant, Payless shoes, ModeOday, bealls, Kroger, Dairy Queen a few other stuff lots them closed empty buildings.. hey at the old West theater still open and yes a Wal mart too.
Most depressing town I've ever lived in. Criminals, people passing through, transients, criminals, drugs, prisons.....criminals. Dark and depressing, nothing to do but drugs and sex.
Thanks for sharing 😊
No problem

Grants is heaven compared to espanola nm
Does Interstate 40 run along side of Route 66? I guess it’s been there a very long! Lots of old signs, probably worth a lot of money 💰
Sometimes they run together and some places it separates it was the way from Illinois to California
