  • How to install a Road trip and CONVOY CB Radio system in under 1 minute #cbradio President Thomas FCC is a great mobile CB Radio with many "Big Radio" features in a small package. The Thomas is also one of the newest radios with a first in the USA using AM and FM . #cbradio #prepping #mobilecbradio
    I used the new ultra powerful President Magnet mount and a Pro Comm Antenna.
    The choice of antenna is up to you as long as the antenna has the mostly universal thread size of 3/8 X 24. You can use a shorter antenna for a more low profile or a larger antenna for greater range.
    Here are a few links to get you started.

    Nice set up. We use the President Randy hand held and the New Virginia antenna in my wife’s car. Super easy to set up and very good performance also. The radio lasts all day and can plug in to the car to charge if needed.

      I shot a video using the Randy II FCC and the new Virginia, great setup and small enough to be left in the vehicle for an emergency setup as well. That video comes next.
      Thanks for watching. Cheers

    I’ve ran a few of those antennas over the years in a similar setup , I like them . My buddy always called then hybrid antennas for some reason , he sold them at his shop . Great performance for the money, then about 10 years ago the price doubled 😬.. I haven’t priced one in years , but I’d like to have another as a backup . I still have mine I ran for years on my patrol car

    Do note, magnet mount should only be temporary. If left on long (which you can do if you like) they will damage paint. Both by uneven sun fading (after a year they will leave a darker circle as the rest of the paint fades a bit), and trapping sand under the magnet which will scratch paint when removing the antenna. Be advised.

    Curious how well those magnetic mounts hold up driving down the road. I assume they'd have to be find or no one would buy them but still makes me a bit nervous.

      They hold up fine. In certain areas our speed limit is 80MPH. No problems at that speed.

    The radio is grounded once the cigarette lighter adapter is plugged in, correct? If you ran power to fuse box instead, you''d need to attach radio ground wire to a metal screw or nut, correct?

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      correct. If you want to "hardwire" the cord instead using the cigarette lighter adapter.

    Hello and thanks a lot for this video. The antenna cable is pinched on the door, is that a problem ? What level of "radio noise" is the cigarette lighter alimentation going to make, versus a battery alimentation directly ?

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I route the coax to a corner of the door jam, usually never have an issue with pinched coax. I run a 100w radio in this car at times so I have a 8ga wire hooked direct to the battery (fused) . the noise using cig VS batt is the same. Problem with this car is fuel injector noise. PIA at times, some radios filter it out pretty good, hammy ham radios are the worst performers noise wise. Great question !!!
      Cheers

    Aerial not SWR to radio so the range performance will be poor, if the SWR is really bad then the radio will be damaged pretty soon.

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I try to rout my coax in and around a curve, like the B pillar and roof. We don't want to pinch coax as when coax is pinched it can change the impedance as well as any physical damage.

      I checked the SWR and it was 1.5 on ch 20 out the box. That is just fine for temporary use, the idea for this video was to keep it simple.

    That Pro-Am CB antenna is based on an old line of MFJ HF antennas that haven't been made in about 10 years because they were crappy at best.
    I do hope that you check the VSWR every time that you install and uninstall that system in a vehicle as it will change even when used in the same vehicle.
