As a dad of 7 and 4 year old daughters, this parenting talk is sooo relatable. I always rooted for Dale as a driver, but I am bigger fan of Dale as a dad/husband.

The fact that you are not only aware of your shortcomings, but also concerned about your parenting skills shows how good of a parent you already are.

An advantage Dale has over most parents is his maturity. Most of us have children when we are barely adult.

You’ll get through it. I raised three Sons and there was times when I felt like I need ed a whistle like a Referee. You and your wife are the Bosses . It’s up to the parents to prepare them for life. I told my three Sons you will always have a Boss. They have to learn they won’t always get their way. You have a short time to teach this to Kids . Your preparing them for life because they’ll come a Day When you won’t be there. My Sons all ended up as Bosses. Two were in command positions in the Navy and Army. The other a Business Man. They love my Wife and I and thank us for being loving, Firm. I was never mean to them , and that we are still always there for them. Family is the Most important thing in Life. Dale I finally learned to be a good parent when I became a grandpa. It all just seemed to come together because I had time to really listen to them, and watch them. You both will get it especially since you have learned NOT to yell, hit and carry on. You will gain their respect by listening, speaking in a calm (very hard sometimes) voice and demeanor, be consistent. Fear is counterproductive

Great video guys! My kids are grown and turned out to be great adults, Hell yeah I'm bragging. My kids are my greatest accomplishment. What I learned through tons of mistakes is 1) kids are testing you, they are trying to figure out their boundaries, yes even at 4 years old. 2) No empty promises, you tell her your going to throw the bouncy house in the trash, you damn well better throw that thing in the trash. 3) As hard as this is, you need to show and tell and show them when they disappoint you and also tell and show them when they make you proud. 4) the worst thing any parent can do is try to be friends with your kids. Dale Sr. seemed to have raised some great kids and I suspect it wasn't because he was big on time outs and counting to 5. Being friends with your kids comes when they become actual adults. I became truly close with my two boys when they were in their early to mid twenties

I thoroughly enjoyed your video on disciplining your children. I have two grown children. When my children misbehaved, I had a “Saturday Box”.
When I felt like you described, I told the child how disappointed I was with their actions. And I got to choose their favorite toy at that time and they put would put the toy in the Saturday Box. If they were good for the week, they would get their toy back on the following Saturday.
I hope that this might help. My two children turned out wonderful.

Well you have your patience...but no respect. Believe it or not children know they are loved by boundaries. I'm 65 and have a son in his mid thirties. He is a wonderful husband and a good provider, and loves his mom. I couldn't be prouder! What helped me was a book by James Dobson.."Dare to discipline". He is a Christian child psychologist. Dale, one thing I have learned about being a parent as it’s a lot of experimentation for a little return. Mike is right she’s going to be fine and she won’t even remember this event. You’re beating yourself up because you’re concerned that you’re not coming on strong enough or unsure about how you’re handling it, and that somehow that’s going to impact her as a person. It’s not. My dad was probably in the same boat yours was, you did not go looking for trouble with my dad either, but I steered clear of him, and it kept me in check. The only thing that stands out to me is that you walked away which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing, but it could show your girls that all they have to do is push you to that point to get what they want. My daughter is 5 and does the same thing, but she’ll be standing in the corner if she wants to get mouthy or sassy… 30 seconds or a minute of standing in the corner makes them contemplate life choices for being bad. When in reality what I wanted most from my parents is for them to care about me and pay attention to me. That’s what they’ll remember most.

We waited until we were in our later 20's before we had a child. Nothing could've prepared us for parenting. Parenting is, to use Dale Jr's metaphor of baseball, a lot of base hits, not homeruns. The culmination of those base hits will yield a loving, caring, smart, nurturing adult. My dad was retired Navy. He was, at times a mean old salt. He never argued with me as I got older into my teen age years. He would tell me to do something and if I didn't, there were consequences and repercussions. He would say, "I'm the adult, you are the child. I don't argue with children." Raising my daughter was different than I was raised. I got spanked and got ass whippings all the time. I was able to look and my daughter and convey to her that I was "deeply disappointed in her choices/behavior.'' That worked for my me and my wife, in our household." Pic and choose your battles. You have a long road to hoe.

I have a 4 year old daughter as well - and at times I feel the same way as you Dale Jr - sometimes just don’t know what to do about the kids attitude- but when you and hit that homerun does feel awesome - Maybe do a segment for dads - Looks like a few of us need the same help you need!

First off, good talk Dads. This is a tough thing for a parent. Usually when kids act out it's because they're not getting what they want from their parents, be it attention, approval or affirmation. I can only tell you what worked for me. I had three children and that was three different personalities to deal with. I spent some time figuring out what they really wanted from me. All children are prone to acts of defiance, but once you know what it is they want from you, you can deal with them.
For example my middle child was my only daughter. She just wanted my attention and she didn't care if it was good attention or bad attention, so long as she had my attention. So if behaving didn't get her the attention she wanted, she would misbehave (usually by being obstructionist or defiant) to get me to pay attention to her. After I realized that, she was easier to deal with. She would be defiant to get my attention, so when she was defiant I would ignore her. Eventually she would do what I wanted and I would give her the attention she wanted.
This technique allowed my kids to think they were helping me get things done and they got what they wanted out of the transaction. Next time tell your daughter how excited you are to see her in her farmer's outfit and then spend a few minutes hugging on her and telling her how pretty and special she looks. It might take some coaxing, but I'm willing to bet your oldest girl wants your approval and will trade you her compliance to get it.
Don't let the situation degenerate into a power play and instead keep it a transaction where everyone gets something out of the deal.

Driving down the road did your dad ever hit the brakes real quick when you was in the backseat? My dad called it get'n our attention. Which it did.. but it pissed my mom off!! 🤣 🤣

I've had 3 four year old boys and I can tell you they don't always know right from wrong so you have to step in and make them do what is right. Yell when you need to yell and speak softly when you need to speak softly. Don't overthink it. Do what you feel is right and don't worry about which "strategy" you use.

knowing when to back out of the situation as a parent is HUGE! Tagging out is the perfect way to deal with kids when you feel yourself hitting that limit for things like getting dresses and morning routines. There is definitely a time to put your foot down but its different with headstrong kids.

Very relatable to everyone with kids. Just remember that there is no owners manual for kids. Each one is different in his/her own way.

It’s good that Dale understands that small children are more intelligent and comprehend more than most people give them credit for… They’re young and inexperienced… not stupid

It's not possible to parent without second guessing yourself from time to time. Learning what works best for each child is an independent case of on the job training. When you hit a spot where you are questioning what motivation or consequence will work best, often taking a step back to look at the world through the child's eyes to recognize what is precious to them will direct you toward an answer. While your authority is important, the ultimate goal is still to reach the child effectively and individual kids respond differently.

I was a single father with two daughters, both adults now,and you are absolutely right. Disciplining those girls was a tough balancing act without someone to consistently back me up 😅. They’re both functioning adults now and amazing people ❤

5 kids and 13 grandkids, I feel you pain! Be consistent, work together with Amy. Back each other up and if some discipline is applied, you both need to stick with it! Don't undermine each other. Odds are those kids will grow up and surprise you in a very good way!

My son was five when he decided to push the plate away because he didn’t care for the food presented. I explained that this was mealtime and there wouldn’t be any snacks and dinner would be around six o’clock. I stayed calm and put his plate away. As time went on, his tummy started grumbling and he realized it wasn’t his best option. He asked for snacks and even tried getting a banana from grandma. It was hard to watch, but he was very happy to see dinner and never refused a meal after that. The consequences of his decision helped him see the light.

I loved this talk about parenting. We have all been there and it is so relatable to every parent as we all have had our moments of knowing the right thing to do. I will say in regards to the consequence for not eating her breakfast is two fold in my opinion. I think there is a natural consequence that if she doesn't eat her food, she will be hungry before lunch and that's a natural consequence to her action of not eating. To me shoving the plate away is a different consequence. I will also add that it sounds like you and Amy are fantastic parents and are doing a great job raising your children!
