Dale Jr.'s Crazy Day At Home

  • Dale Jr. talks about his work weekend in Las Vegas with his wife Amy. While the trip was nice, they came home to a more hostile Monday. Two dogs fighting and two children not getting along produced a not-so-perfect day in the Earnhardt household.

My Son, who’s now 22, was 3 when he started biting. Doing time out and talking really didn’t improve the situation….One day he bit me…..Hard! I decided then and there to give him a taste of what it felt like to be bit and I bit him back…..From that day forward he never bit anyone again. I didn’t like having to do it, but when it comes to our kids we have to do things we don’t like.

Ditto. Happened in my household as well. I don’t think kids that young understand how powerful the teeth and jaws are.
When my son got “his payback” it was the end of that issue.

Now that the dog has attacked it Dale needs to rehome the dog or they will always be worried about the next attack.

It sounds like you may need a nice Fly Swatter hanging up on the wall in the Kitchen. There were three of us kids in our home and Mom could crack that fly swatter like a Bull Whip. We learned real fast to tow the line and act like we had sense because we knew that Fly Swatter worked well on our Backsides!
Mom was a stay at home Mother back in the Day and Dad was a US Marine. There were seven words that literally scared the crap out of us kids when Mom said them during the day....
"Just wait until your Father gets home!"
Those days are remembered fondly to this day and I am so glad we were all raised right and taught Respect, Honor and Dignity by the examples Mom & Dad gave us all.

Couldn't agree with you more. People seem to think that disciplining children is akin to both being a bad parent and not loving them. It couldn't be further from the truth. You do it out of love and a parents job is to raise their kids to be good adults not to be forever kids The funniest thing about it is that children actually don't need to be disciplined very much after that first time. It's the thought of it that keeps them in line. Almost everyone that was correctly disciplined as a child will say it was the best thing their parents could have done for them. This whole "alone time" to think about what they've done is nonsense imo. Children need to hear the words "no" " you can't have that yet you'll have to wait" " say you're sorry" etc.. more

You were gone for the weekend and then you got home and all of them wanted your attention at once, and you are only one person. Go into the house and sit in the middle of the room and call them all over and take a moment for playing with Isla and the dog's together and Nicole too.

My only other instinct is to make sure there is nothing wrong with the Irish Setter health wise ...

I feel the same way, working shift work as a firefighter when my kids go with Mom to Grandma’s house in PA I end up missing the kids, a lot. When everyone gets home it’s like bouncing off the walls to the point, where it’s makes them coming home difficult and irritating because I look forward to them coming home for a whole week or weekend… but within the first 30 seconds to 5 mins, the kids are fighting the dogs walking on the ceiling and I’m like, man can’t it just relax and I can enjoy everyone being home? So I’m glad it’s not just me, the only good thing I got going is the damned cat, she at least gets along with the dog.

Bit three people and killed a neighbors dog in a span of 6 months. Sadly he was put down. Undeterred my friend got another one. She snapped at 6 years. Jump forward 20 years...a good friend was having a baby. His wife wanted a dog. They were looking at Irish setters and ended up adopting a three year old. I won't get into specifics but it didn't end well. It's a shame because they are beautiful dogs.

The daughter btw I have 5 daughters & 1 boy. It’s the best. Because as a dad if you think your gonna have a son and be best buds that’s fantasyland. Boys pull towards mom, girls pull towards dad. Seeking acceptance from the opposite sex. Which is absolutely crucial for development. As soon as your son is born your wife scoops him up and that’s her baby. So as a dad you want daughters if you wanna have you a best friend that loves you for you. They don’t care how much money you make or what job you work. Same thing for a mother and her son. It’s the first time a male loves her and she knows it’s genuine. Other than her father. Isla is in a difficult position. Usually the youngest or only boy is the moms favorite child. And the youngest or only girl is the dads favorite. But I have 5 and I just make sure I equal and balance everything. When I was in Afghanistan for the last time I kept a calendar of how many times I called each one per day. If I talked to one 3x per day them I would call all the kids 3 x per day. It may just be for a minute or two. But If they found out they didn’t get called as many times they would be heart broken. So I had plenty of time on my hands I could equally pass out love and affection. Which is critical for a girl. If you don’t provide love and affection they will go out and find it! For example come home pregnant at 13yrs old. Usually teen pregnancies are the result of a father who didn’t make them feel loved and valued so they went out searching for it and unfortunately they end up pregnant in the process.

Anyway he does all kind of crazy stuff to the big German shepherds. They are not aggressive and don’t fight back which seems to make him even more pissed off as if he thinks they don’t take him seriously. He was the runt in the first place so that was a ego blow then he becomes family with two giants.

Dont let your dogs growl or show you aggression without being aggressive back immediately. Your the pack leader and must act like it or they will attempt to take over leadership from you and the only way they do it is with force. Mine growled at me a few times and I gave him my hand in his mouth while putting him on his back and growling back. Hes now the sweetest 200 lb rott ever. You gotta set that pecking order or he will.

You handled the kids biting incident very well. I don't know about the dogs. You may need a pro.

When I was about 17 and my nephew was about 4 he bit me..... I bit him back... he never bit anyone again. So then when I was about 35, my 8 year old great nephew bit me... I bit him back... he never bit anyone else again. To this day, I'm still not a favorite of my great nephew but it's proof that they will not bite again. And I'm not talking about give them a soft bite back... I bit the hell out of both of them 😂 I did the same thing with a dog that bit me.... he avoided me after that 😂😂

Almost 100% Junebug was the instigator. Little dogs constantly challenge bigger dogs in ways we don't even see. Sometimes the big dog just has enough. This also just happened to my sister-in law, that little dog didn't make it. It sucks , Im sorry this happened.

Don’t listen to the experts online about your dog issues, hire a professional - they’ll come to your house and figure out what’s going on between the dogs, and sort it quickly.
