    The music, the cinematography, the buffalo stampede, etc....just a brilliant movie. Should have received the Oscar for Best Film. Saw it when it first came out in a cinerama theater. Since then, probably have watched it close to 50 times.

    I remember our family going to the Cooper Cinerama in Denver, Colorado in 1962 to see this. It was our big family night out, and we got all gussied up in our best clothes. We went out to dinner, and then to the movies. It still brings tears to my eyes. The opening music is still one of the best themes ever written. I just got the Blu-Ray, which has both the original "smilebox" Cinerama picture, and the widescreen version, both lovingly remastered for the best sound and picture I've seen since that day in 1962. WOW! Highly recommended!

    My father never got tired of watching this movie. He must have seen it at least 200 times over the years. He loved the cast, the story line, the scenes, the authenticity of the moments. Hollywood doesn't make movies like this one anymore. And, the current crop of actors and actresses are lightweights to no-weights in comparison to the star-studded cast in this movie.

    There must be a PhD thesis in music history that explains why american western music and spaghetti western music are so vastly different. But as far as i'm concerned, *this* is the sound of the Wild West.

    • @samuelbarber6177
      @samuelbarber6177 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Different composers, different styles, different tones. Many American westerns were epics about American exceptionalism and focused more on the morals of the heroes rather than violence whereas Spaghetti Westerns like Django and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly were smaller and really delved into the violence behind the West

    • @mikef5881
      @mikef5881 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@samuelbarber6177 The composers of the music for most great Western epics were either the sons of Eastern European Jewish immigrants or immigrants themselves: e.g., Elmer Bernstein, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Dmitri Tiomkin. So was the composer of the music for the two great "Cowboy" ballets, Aaron Copland.

    • @mikef5881

      All of which raises the question: How much of American Western movie music is actually "American", and how much of it is Eastern European influenced?

      Alfred Newman's great achievement in the opening credits was to blend many quintessential American music styles in just 3 minutes. He references Aaron Copeland's elegiac American themes, plus a military march, fife and drum, barn dance, mariachi band etc. It's superb and really stirs the blood.
