John Barnes PT demonstrating self myofascial unwinding. Myofascial unwinding is the movement-facilitation aspect of my myofascial-release approach. The mind-bodys ability to self-correct.
You can also apply very, very light pressure from a thumb or finger to a bad spot and your body will unwind around it. It can be really intense if you have a lot of negative patterns, but that's just showing you how necessary it is. Feel around. Your body will absolutely tell you if you listen.
I'm a practitioner and I have seen 100s of people 'Unwind.' It is THE best exercise or workout there is because your own body instinctively takes you to areas where you need healing that even your physician can't find. And it feels s-o-o-o good! This UW is tame for demo. purposes. But do it to music, drums--let yourself go and people yell, fling around, have REMS. Yet you are always in full control. It's healing my back. It's BETTER THAN YOGA. The Unwinding you see here is very tame.
I had been doing this for years before I knew what it was. You know when you get up in the morning and stretch? Well keep doing it all over your body. Theres a deep wisdom there.
I had one unwinding session with a Therapist over ten years ago. I often wake in the middle of the night and my body wants to unwind. I feel like I psychologically work through trauma while sleeping and then my body’s Cellular memory is triggered to release these patterns stored in my fascia. Sometimes these releases last up to an hour. Sometimes it’s only 10-15 min. Quite amazing.
A lot of comments here by people apparently threatened by what they don't understand. That is too bad, they are missing out on the help they could give themselves and their patients. I studied with John and know him to be both a brilliant therapist and a decent human being. I think it is quite generous to share a technique (for free) that can be done without the need of a therapist. It is a giving and a compassionate act to teach people how to care for themselves
It is rare to hear a healer tell you to listen to your own body! Those are the only healers I trust! I am trying these techniques! (Note: the audio keeps cutting out.) Thank you for making this video for me to learn from, and for all your gentle encouragement.
well said...I have had this for over twenty years and finally seeking therapy at 44...best thing that ever happened to me...dr.s would not acknowledge it until I diagnosed myself and told them what it was...now I know I can live without being in pain all the time...also tens unit has been helpful...
I felt , as every evening , my back muscles tight & achy . I've tried a few yoga-type movements & tapping my back with my fists but with very short relief . I tried the standing star stretch & it did wonders !! Felt so amazingly good afterwards . I've done it again this morning....aah ...marvellous ! I prefer this to classic stretching before my rebounder session . It's more flowing & enjoyable , less boring . Thank you soo much ! This method will be adopted by me . It's available to do anywhere , anytime ! Fantastic ! THANK YOU
Actually this guy is not a fraud. John Barnes is one of the leading instructors in Myofascial release. I will agree that his courses are a little expensive, but his model is the same as any other instructor teaching myofascial release. Tissue unwinding is a real thing. I have had it applied to me, as well as done self unwinding to my low back, neck, and TMJ area. To those who are properly trained in massage and anatomy, Myofascial release is a wonderful technique for self and clients.
I just did this for a while after my shift as an LMT and the first time I saw this video I didn't pay much attention to it but now when I just did it, I was able to relax out my back without much effort and it felt great. I also have a degree in dance and think every dancer should experience this for the bodymind connection dancers really need to hone. Thanks for the upload.
@theLionHorse Listen to the steps of what he is saying. Go where the body wants to go, where it's easiest, then if you find a place to stretch you hang out there and stretch, lengthen, breath and find muscles to relax in the position you are in. Most people cannot move freely for long before finding the tension to stretch out, the reason the ease of movement is needed is so the mind can tune into whats going on. Body moving at ease means the mind can be at ease. Hope this helps.
John we need an unwinding video like what we Therapist experience in your courses. Is so difficult to try to help clients reach that level without them seeing someone else do it 1st. Maybe some of the footage of the recorded videos could be put on TH-cam? We are all loving you and Hoping you return To teaching soon.
If done right, you hear a loud crackling sound. In utter state of extreme relief. Also your neck will get very toned from these stretches. Age old technique, just hard to describe.
This is a great idea and amazing explanation of technique and necessity of self unwinding! Certainly will be taken to my daily routine! I wish the video would be better quality - broken sound through entire video.
The sound is broken, yes, yet not a single word is missing. The woman's flow was mesmerizing and sensual, and I prefer this good video over any modern re-make with perfect digital sound.
The first tmie I encountered this was during sitting meditation. I started rocking back and forth. My physical therapist ecplained what it was, and how the fascia runs between the skin and muscles (myo). She was able to support my body through even deeper releases, which helped me release long held trauma that was causing a lot of pain. Exhausting, though. I sleep like a baby afterwards. Gteat technique, and my insurance covered it!
I can't believe how negative and rude some people are..grow up! Stretching is a wonderful way to ease all over body pain especially associated with fibromyalgia.
ive been watching myofascial releasing videos for a while and this is the first time when i truly understand what it is because he explains it so easily. Everyone else is trying to explain it from a logical point of view which made no sense to me. This feels more like flow and even like a spiritual practice. Thank you for posting it.
Maybe look into Rolfing, if you have not tried that. It's pricey but worth it. Also look at something called the MELT method, after you get some rolfing done.
I empathize with you. I suffered a life altering injury from a chiropractor adjustment 8 years ago. I have been living in severe pain ever since and twisting of my spine in the upper back/lower neck area causing my head to twist to the right. I have spent thousands trying to fix it. Just came across myofacial release. Wonder if this is what is wrong with me? What is your opinion?
Audio drops out every 5 sec! Please re-upload. Would love to do this work but audio dropout plus audio content without instruction is difficult. Pease describe movements - without chatter. Hard to watch movements when you're hearing something totally unrelated and there is no instruction. E.g. is hand facing up or down?
Instruction about the hand facing up or down? is novelenes watching a different video? Instructions were clear - do what YOUR body wants, don't try to mimic the model.
He's Grizzly Adams Great-Great-Great grandson, he was a logger but after channel surfing one boring Saturday morning seeing Liberace, Jimmy Swaggart, Richard Simmons and a doctor pimping out drugs he decided some sort of self help might better than the inconsistent logging. The Adams family.
ummm, the more you stretch and twist your body, the easier it gets and the better u feel. Slower is part of it, so things actually stretch and let tensions and patterns go. Good luck.
Charly kyoru, you are welcome to your opinion, but most of us are mature and evolved enough to separate our need to eliminate deep pain from some sort of bizarre social concept of "creepiness."
@@debgaudin8862 continuous input from myofascial trigger points increases excitablilty of dorsal horn neurons, expanding the receptive field and leading to central sensitization, granting you a life long patient.
Bullshit. When you receive valuable information for free, either don't complain about the sound quality or don't watch. I hope you're in a better mood now, nine years later than you were when you wrote this. :) I, for one, am grateful to see a demo of this technique.
Sharon, this "creepy as hell guy" founded a therapeutic modality, which has assisted - perhaps - thousands of women, in recovery, from the actions of actual "creeps". No woman has taken legal action, against this man (remarkable, in this era). If you would like to know who "this man" is, his name is John Barnes, and his website is myofascialrelease.com. As for his weight; what has that got to do with the gifts he has imparted to physical therapists, and patients, alike? Of course, if you do put your judgement(s) on hold, and look into the teachings of Mr. Barnes, and your initial impression persists, I would strongly suggest you get a series of myofascial release sessions - perhaps from someone with a body you find more acceptable. Myofascial release can do a lot to help with "stuck" attitudes, as well as stuck fascia!
it looks like he's just feeling up a chick who seems to be really enjoying it....kudos to the mountian man who found open button shirts and slacks in his plan to seduce women
Took years as a bodyworker to learn this kind of self-bodywork 💝

The sound is broken, but it does not "cut out" because every word is there, none are skipped during the brief silences.
"You've had a lot of negative patterns in your body which have been there to protect you." What a great quote.
Fantastic! Thanks for the reminder! I remembered how I used to stretch as a child and teenager. It's intuitive self-care.💚

I was taught this by a man in Scotland. Our bodies are amazing and the fascia is even ore so. The moving and stretching is almost out of this world

Well, its interesting to see John as a younger man, His expertise of soft tissue myofascial work is nationally known. Good short video.
Love doing this. best body mind and soul release
I love this natural technique best form of meditation and yoga , combined fluidity!
Too cute
This is a great video, and a wonderful technique which I share with all of my patients.

I do this and it feels so wonderful. It also happened involuntarily towards the end of a Tapping session, EFT. Interesting.
This happens to me for years. It saved my life
Very good and simple techinque!
I tried this and it works and it's amazing!
Isn't it?
This is very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks. In just a few minutes I feel great already. This is certainly a great service to the world.

Awesome. Will try it!
great video, very helpful

The devil in my body has finally vanished, thank you so much John x3
If you don't mind me asking, why did you say that .? Was it just an expression?
Just remember that devil was there to protect you.
Never listen to the judgements of others.
Keep it up 👍

She is talented...
Ever tried Zhan Zhuang? Baguazhang? All about the fascia. :)
It's great fun.
Ive w seen cats and human babies do this. .I been doing a yoga/Tai chi combination with similar results
That red head is why my back is out in the first place.

This is how I wake up sometimes :P
TRUE.

I've re uploaded the video on my channel where I fixed the audio issue, no cutting and less wind noise.
sort of a zen home yoga session.
What's with the way "Lori" longingly looks at her therapist?
They were together for a good while
I'll have what she's having

one word------YOGA!
Anyone else having trouble with the sound?
this just makes no sense, could someone explain? My body doesn't feel like moving anywhere?

Flight of the Conchords for life! haha.
@LegPains
NOW YOU KNOW he is definitely getting his clients high as. Fr tho
I think somebody slipped something in her drink!
thank you Dr. but the taking the video in the open air was a really bad idea
13 years ago. Stretching is normal
audio sucks
Stretching
OK... I "stretched" and my body decided to take me to Taco Bell!
Very painful process for over 40 crowd especially if daily-weekly stretching was not part of your lively routine!
Looks easier than yoga. Shame about the sound quality.

he smashed lol
LMFAO!
Crappy video, the audio cuts in and out.
Ugh, what's up with the audio cut outs? VERY annoying, people shouldn't post with poor equipment. Like people in shoe...that said, solid material.
i feel sorry for you...
I'm sure the thumbs down are for the crappy sound quality. Way too annoying
The audio is awful...very distracting.
i think this video is about 15 yr old. look at him.
crappy sound
nice try
This seems very creepy to me ;(
