I have 10 more peach reapers that I'm hardening off to transition to outside currently. But quite pleased I got good growth and fruiting on my first try. I only use fish emulsion and CalMag.
I had a Reaper and a Chocolate Bhutlah growing indoors under similar LED lights, and the flowers kept falling off! Now that they're outside in full sun, with warmer avg temperature (as opposed to my air-conditioned apt), access to steady breeze and bug-pollination, they are producing lots of good-looking fruit.
Will you post some photos of the fruit? Im doing an indoor grow with the same plants, but their in a controlled temp room under two 1000W LED's. Im hoping for a little better luck fruiting them.
My carolina flowered for a good few months before starting to set fruit, even after hand pollinating. Turns out the nitrogen was too high. If the nitrogen is too high, it causes the plant to put more effort into growth than fruit. You can flush the plant and then fertilize with high phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to speed it along. Make sure, however, that it does maintain low levels of nitrogen to prevent leavrs from yellowing and falling off
When my reaper started to put out its first set of flower they fell off also. Next time it has flowers put a oscillating fan to help with pollination. Also shake the plant from time to time.
Vibrating toothbrush is about the best thing I've found. Just a quick touch to the outside of the flower bell or at the stem directly beneath. I do this with my tomatoes and when the pollen is ready you see a visible cloud puff off. I can't imagine it would be any less effective with peppers.
I know it's been mentioned, but in case new visitors are just now seeing this, the reason the flowers did not pollinate is because they were likely damaged with the qtip and died. This is not a dig at the poster, again just to put this at the top for new growers. I'm sure he's learned this now and we all go through a learning process with gardening... and I'm still in the beginner stage myself. But most all pepper plants self pollinate. So just a light tap on each branch that has flowers is all that's needed and it doesn't hurt to do it every day till the flower drops.
your time lapse was awesome! but for successful fruiting, youll want to trim back your plant. if it grows without being trimmed, it puts its energy into the body instead of the fruit. my own pepper plants had the same issue when i started, and i figured out that basically the more i chopped off, the more successful the fruit grow.
I had a similar experience with my reaper plant. Grew it from a seed to a 3ft plant indoor over the fall/winter. No fruit, even though it did flower, they'd just fall off. Finally hardened it off and moved it outside for the summer and I got more flowers that turned into fruit.
The time-lapse is fascinating. Btw, Chili peppers don't need help from human to pollinate. Normally they grow in hot areas so, there are no bees to help. What they do is, they wait for the wind to either carry the particles or just shake them so, next time try to just shake the plant and all will be good.
Just hold the stem and shake the plant for few days once a day to drop the pollen then you get some dont worry plant will like it and gets stronger outside wind would take care of it since you have it inside you should use a small fan sometimes too also super hots dont need to poollenat like others they just need to drop the pollen.cheers

I have my first little sprout today. 1/8 seeds has broke through the soil. This is my first time ever growing anything. I really like your artificial light set up! I am nervous to take mine outside because I do not want it to die.
i have mine in a pretty small pot compared to his one, theyve been growing on my windowsill for 5 months now and are just about 6 inches tall. hope the same will happen to them /:
1. Not NEARLY enough light. 2. You need to watch your light cycle. During vegetation phase you should be running 18-24 hours of light, and once it starts flowering switch it to 12 hours light/12 hours dark. 3. You should never start seedlings off in a pot that large. You should be repotting at least twice. Let the roots build their foundation before tossing them in a bigger pot. 4. Are you feeding them, if so, what and when? Plants need nitrogen potassium and phosphorus, those are the three main components for a flowering/fruiting plant. They need more nitrogen in the beginning, and more phosphorus at the end. 5. In 6 months your plant should have been at least 3-4 times that size, all of the reasons i mentioned above are why it was so small and dainty, and why it didnt fruit. 6. You don’t need to pollinate unless you’re trying to breed the plant with another strain. Even then, just putting a fan nearby usually does the trick on most indoor plants. 7. I got all of my green thumb knowledge from a few decades of growing weed and peppers, so you can take my advice straight to the bank.
Topping is good i hear. I topped mine after the 3rd set of new leafs and topped those 2 tips after there 3rd set. Makes for a bushy plant rather than 6ft lanky one. Also zenzyme (hydrozyme or shogun zenzyme) product is good along with rooting stimulant and fabric pots.

Peppers self pollinate. I personally think that all you did was pull the pollen off. You should just tap the top of the flower or shake it a bit and it will be fine. It is definitely gorgeous and you did a wonderful job growing it.
I am also growing a reaper, my question why did you trim the bottom leafs? and also why the stones in the pot? This is my first time growing anything and it's pretty cool to see the little daily changes.
Trimming leaves and stems near the soil helps to prevent diseases since most diseases start in the soil. If it were to stay indoors it's entire life there's no need to trim the bottom, though I still would since it makes a more attractive plant.
Qtip pollination works but isn't needed just give the branches some taps whenever you check on the plant. I forget the term but the flowers have both male and female parts they usually use wind to transfer pollen to the center. Bees usually transfer pollen between plants this isn't needed for these. Also CR takes a long season to produce ime the first flowers always fall off.
Awesome Andrew. That plant will keep as a perennial, can grow it for years. Check the pH of the soil. Conventional wisdom is that hot peppers in particular will set fruit when the pH is around 6.5 (slightly acidic) and daytime temps mid 70s, night time temps mid 60s. Good luck! Cheers, Chris.
Good advice always appreciated, but with that being said you can (and probably should) aim for slightly higher temperatures for these super hot strains but still not surpass 85 or so at least not in terms of constant temperatures. Everyone got their own ideas I understand that and but for ex look in India for a moment and I do speak in general now, peppers in the south can be up to twice the strength due to the hotter climate and these are slightly different in that aspect from many other plants.
Overwinter it and try next year, pepper plants pollinate much better if you just leave them outside. When they are inside, give the plant a good shake, that should pollinate nicely.
Lucas Mills The only plants I have that's out performing my jalapenos and serrano peppers are my 2 year old ghost peppers and red habaneros. My reapers are 4 months old and 5" tall. Only one is blooming. It's frustrating for sure!
Serranos are one of my go-to plants every year. They are so easy to grow. Just adequate water is enough, direct sunlight and they are good to go. My ghost peppers took their time, but are finally producing. Just in time, gonna get cooler here soon in Pennsylvania.
@@lucasmills1246 I live in South Florida originally from Pennsylvania. You would think that the warmer weather makes for easier growing. It can be a blessing and a curse for many reasons. For one in the summer here is brutally hot and humid with horrible pests. Also the humidity can cause many diseases that dont typically present an issue in cooler climates. Also the soil is all sand which sucks for anything. So you have to buy a lot of soil just to condition your growing area. We also have a rainy season that is very wet that also can be an issue. You can be successful growing many things here but it takes alot more work than you might think just to keep the soil right, and the humidity and temperature right. Even in the winter it can droo down to the 40s and 50s for weeks at a time especially at night which might not be ideal either. Depending on what you.are growing.
I got 6 that are 2 months old. After the 3rd set of true leafs I topped them. I intend to top them again once the 2 new grow tips devolop there next 2 or 3 sets of new growth. I had 2 die on me. The big leafs went funny and died off. Got them in biobizz all mix soil. Maybe I am using wrong soil as it has 30% peat and I read potting compost is better but this biobizz has got perlite,spagnum moss and worm castings and is great for og kush. Going to pot up to 3 gallon fabric pots and place out on the balcony in April. Hopefully the rest will survive which they should as there in a 4 x 4 grow tent with 85% humidty and 20-22 c temp under a 300w led light (telos 10 pro). Been using shogun katana roots to stimulate root growth and shogun zenzyme to brwak down old root matter into food for the plant. Got shogun terra grow and bloom nutes when I feel there needed but there's plenty of nutes in biobizz. Might stake them when i pot up to rhizo pots but hoping for a bushy plant rather than tall. Maybe 60cm high and 60 cm wide. Might add an inch of hydroton clay balls to the fabric pots or might even invest in an autopot. My main point was topping how ever lol.
Great video with time lapse.. I will be sowing some seeds this weekend but has been advised to use gloves with these seeds. For manual pollination, try battery operated brush instead qtips. Gentle shaking could work too if done carefully. :)
Cool :) I have Carolina Reaper Caramel, but so far it’s very small, a little less than a month. It's funny that judging by the video, the plant grows at the beginning quite slowly. And only then it gives a sharp start and becomes high.
Interesting. I am currently growing one, too, and although it has LOTS of flowers, not one has set fruit yet. I'm wondering if it might be too cold right now. I guess there's next season. 🤷♀ I have a habanero that is fruiting all over the place, grown at the same time. Don't know what gives!
Where I live in Spain there is a huge bee nest and there is very sunny and nice weather and when my plants grow flowers they get pollinated right away!
You need to drop the N, boosting P & K nutrients for it to actually hold onto the fertilizer flowers. Also, I've always heard you don't want to even try to grow the first bloom anyway, it's weak-sauce (from pretty much everyone on a Facebook pepper-growing page). Not hating, just general information for anyone who sees this...That fertilizing method works fine, I do it for my Habs.
Happened to me. Plant grew well and flowered well. Unfortunately flowers would fall off and after year and a half i was frustrated and uprooted the plant off. Hopefully i will find a video that will help to make my venture a success next time
I've seen the paper towel germinating method, but I think other things would work better than paper towels. Paper towels contain strange chemicals. Maybe crumpled cigarette papers, or some kind of organic fiber would work as well.
Actually use toilet paper. The tiny roots infiltrate the toilet paper so plant the bits of toilet paper with the roots attached. The toilet paper readily dissolves, not so with paper towels.
is that the characteristic of the reaper plant the leaves are all wrinkly? because I ordered both carolina and ghost pepper seeds and I mixed them all up when I dropped my jiffy greenhouse so I don't know which is which and I planted 5 outside in pots and 4 have smooth large leaves while one is really small and the leaves are really wrinkly. SO I assume thats the reaper plant?
Pollination is not the problem. 9W is definitely not enough for flowering, besides, your light does probably not have the right spectrum for growing which makes it even less efficient and you also have lots of light leaks (use mylar or some other reflective material with directed light which is not your bulb) - as you can see, just about 20 percent of the light is received by your plant as it's not that bushy and the rest is not reflected back to the plant. Do the math and you will realize that your plant gets a ridiculous amount of light - I'd say you might be happy it even survived. I think you need at least a 30W (grow!)light (cfl would also do). I have mine at 15cm in 2 months is that good or bad? I planted mine on 1st of January using a warm closet to germinate and cork and coconut casing. I have put mine next to window where we get now 6 hours pure sunlight but cant go outside for few months as the weather is -11 at night. The room temp is constant +22. As for pollination is that a real thing that must to do or? This is the 1st time I have ever grown a plant of any kind so all tips would be good :)
Some questions: 1)The light was always in the same position/distance or when the plant was small you had the light closer? 2)Is there any reason you added the stones when flower started to grow up? 3)How many times a week did you water them?
You know to produce fruit is all about fertilizing it on my reaper I put instant coffee with sardines but I did buy a French marigold plant it attracts the bees
I live in Singapore and im staying in a flat. The temperature that i lived its about 23-32c. I placed the plant outside my house, i dont get a full sun due to blocks blocking my area that where im staying. The sun did rise by my area for about 2hrs every 11am-1pm(roughly estimated). Its been about a week since i bought the carolina reaper plant and thank god it didnt die. So i just wanna ask, will the plant survive in the condition that im staying at?
Ive got a couple super hots growing , the carolina reaper being one and tons of fruit , what nutriants were you feding this plant? When there flowering they need lots of calcium. Big help for my plants were (genreal hydroponic maxibloom) its a dry formula super cheap 14bucks for a 2 pound bag and your plants will love it .
That soil was way too saturated. Reapers aren't too fond of being drowned. That's also why you had that algae growing on your top soil and I imagine in the soil itself and around the walls of the pot, stealing nutrients from your Reaper. Also, you should prune your plants. They'll branch out 10 times better than that and yield more peppers, I promise you.
Agreed.should top them after 3rd set of true leafs and repeat this a few tines to get a bushy plant rather than a lanky one. Also fabric pots stop roots circle and air prune giving more oxygen to the root zone.
My plants are half that size and I haven't performed pollination on them, I don't think it makes sense to rub one female flower to another, I have 1 pepper so far and many flowers and buds which will eventually turn into peppers as well, not everything was plain sailing though, some of the plants grew no buds at all. Guess it could be down to the pick of the litter.
Lovely time lapse mate. Question about the way you pollinated the flowers tho. Did you really need cross pollinate the flowers with each other? I was under the impression that chilli plants were self pollinating and as such didn't need insects or wind to do this.
At month 2 it’s super yellow, then goes full green is that normal? Because mine are all yellow. So is my KSLS but the leaves seem to be leveling off and turning dark green.
My plant is about 5" tall and has already flowered and dropped them all off. It is still growing pretty decent! Did yours flower several times or only once?
More light - Iam using Philzon 2000w COB light. Plus you need to switch from 18 hours of light in veg, to 12 hours in flower time. The plant need more rest in flowertime!

Im in a controlled room where I can keep the temp at a constant 80 degrees. Are you still planning on moving the plant outdoors this summer?
The reason he hardly got any flowers and no pods is he didnt have anywhere near enough light. IDK how many lumens those 1000 watt led put out but it should be enough. Im using one 8bulb T5 fixture with just 6500k bulbs and have 7 nice pepper plants with a good deal of pods
I can't find any good hot pepper seeds anywhere locally. I guess I should start looking online. I was even going to buy a few peppers and take the seeds out. It appears near impossible to even find habanero or Carolina reapers anywhere. 😢
Plant needed more light. plants that bear fruit take more then a 9 watt LED to grow the fruit. 🔥🌿
In my space i use 12 of those types of light in my 4x4 space. My peppers don't drop, too bad i don't know how to time lapse.

The bigger the body the more fruits will grow
Top plant when has like 6 nodes and centre of gravity is lower also with fruit to avoid snapping plant.

My plant keep flowering and dropping off. It is outside in 70's, 80's and 90's California sunlight and still no fruit!!! I even use fertilizer

Nice Plant, Ive had the best success when I’ve over wintered chillie plants. You get a better harvest the second year.

Philips sonicare electric toothbrush. Just touch the back of the flower and a cloud of pollen comes out and it pollinates every time.

I've planted my seeds in a raised bed in the garden and let the bees pollinate them now I have about 80 black chilles and I still have 7 seeds to go.

Stones mostly for decorations and maybe so that the water wont evaporate as quickly

Wow!! Just a 9w LED. That's insane. Nicely done.

Also the soil is all sand which sucks for anything. So you have to buy a lot of soil just to condition your growing area. We also have a rainy season that is very wet that also can be an issue. You can be successful growing many things here but it takes alot more work than you might think just to keep the soil right, and the humidity and temperature right. Even in the winter it can droo down to the 40s and 50s for weeks at a time especially at night which might not be ideal either. Depending on what you.are growing.

I got 6 that are 2 months old. After the 3rd set of true leafs I topped them. I intend to top them again once the 2 new grow tips devolop there next 2 or 3 sets of new growth. I had 2 die on me. The big leafs went funny and died off. Got them in biobizz all mix soil. Maybe I am using wrong soil as it has 30% peat and I read potting compost is better but this biobizz has got perlite,spagnum moss and worm castings and is great for og kush. Going to pot up to 3 gallon fabric pots and place out on the balcony in April. Hopefully the rest will survive which they should as there in a 4 x 4 grow tent with 85% humidty and 20-22 c temp under a 300w led light (telos 10 pro). Been using shogun katana roots to stimulate root growth and shogun zenzyme to brwak down old root matter into food for the plant. Got shogun terra grow and bloom nutes when I feel there needed but there's plenty of nutes in biobizz. Might stake them when i pot up to rhizo pots but hoping for a bushy plant rather than tall. Maybe 60cm high and 60 cm wide. Might add an inch of hydroton clay balls to the fabric pots or might even invest in an autopot. My main point was topping how ever lol.

For manual pollination, try battery operated brush instead qtips. Gentle shaking could work too if done carefully. :)

Peppers are self-pollinating, so all you need to do is vibrate the flowers and they pollinate themselves.
I use 3 light sources sun orange and blue lights it grows amazing
...maybe an actual grow light and non-moldy basement...get a grow tent. I will say given the conditions the plant looked very healthy.
Cool :) I have Carolina Reaper Caramel, but so far it’s very small, a little less than a month. It's funny that judging by the video, the plant grows at the beginning quite slowly. And only then it gives a sharp start and becomes high.
Peppers are self pollinating, pollen from flowers needs to fall out by wind/fan or shake the branches

Where I live in Spain there is a huge bee nest and there is very sunny and nice weather and when my plants grow flowers they get pollinated right away!

You need to drop the N, boosting P & K nutrients for it to actually hold onto the fertilizer flowers. Also, I've always heard you don't want to even try to grow the first bloom anyway, it's weak-sauce (from pretty much everyone on a Facebook pepper-growing page).
Not hating, just general information for anyone who sees this...That fertilizing method works fine, I do it for my Habs.
Happened to me. Plant grew well and flowered well. Unfortunately flowers would fall off and after year and a half i was frustrated and uprooted the plant off. Hopefully i will find a video that will help to make my venture a success next time

I've seen the paper towel germinating method, but I think other things would work better than paper towels. Paper towels contain strange chemicals.
Maybe crumpled cigarette papers, or some kind of organic fiber would work as well.
Actually use toilet paper. The tiny roots infiltrate the toilet paper so plant the bits of toilet paper with the roots attached. The toilet paper readily dissolves, not so with paper towels.

is that the characteristic of the reaper plant the leaves are all wrinkly? because I ordered both carolina and ghost pepper seeds and I mixed them all up when I dropped my jiffy greenhouse so I don't know which is which and I planted 5 outside in pots and 4 have smooth large leaves while one is really small and the leaves are really wrinkly. SO I assume thats the reaper plant?

Pollination is not the problem. 9W is definitely not enough for flowering, besides, your light does probably not have the right spectrum for growing which makes it even less efficient and you also have lots of light leaks (use mylar or some other reflective material with directed light which is not your bulb) - as you can see, just about 20 percent of the light is received by your plant as it's not that bushy and the rest is not reflected back to the plant. Do the math and you will realize that your plant gets a ridiculous amount of light - I'd say you might be happy it even survived. I think you need at least a 30W (grow!)light (cfl would also do). I have mine at 15cm in 2 months is that good or bad? I planted mine on 1st of January using a warm closet to germinate and cork and coconut casing. I have put mine next to window where we get now 6 hours pure sunlight but cant go outside for few months as the weather is -11 at night. The room temp is constant +22. As for pollination is that a real thing that must to do or? This is the 1st time I have ever grown a plant of any kind so all tips would be good :)

Cutting it increases branching = more flowers = more fruit

1)The light was always in the same position/distance or when the plant was small you had the light closer?
2)Is there any reason you added the stones when flower started to grow up?
3)How many times a week did you water them?
I think the rocks were meant to act as a mulch in keeping the moisture in the soil

I live in Singapore and im staying in a flat. The temperature that i lived its about 23-32c. I placed the plant outside my house, i dont get a full sun due to blocks blocking my area that where im staying. The sun did rise by my area for about 2hrs every 11am-1pm(roughly estimated). Its been about a week since i bought the carolina reaper plant and thank god it didnt die. So i just wanna ask, will the plant survive in the condition that im staying at?

Ive got a couple super hots growing , the carolina reaper being one and tons of fruit , what nutriants were you feding this plant? When there flowering they need lots of calcium. Big help for my plants were (genreal hydroponic maxibloom) its a dry formula super cheap 14bucks for a 2 pound bag and your plants will love it .

That soil was way too saturated. Reapers aren't too fond of being drowned. That's also why you had that algae growing on your top soil and I imagine in the soil itself and around the walls of the pot, stealing nutrients from your Reaper. Also, you should prune your plants. They'll branch out 10 times better than that and yield more peppers, I promise you.
Agreed.should top them after 3rd set of true leafs and repeat this a few tines to get a bushy plant rather than a lanky one. Also fabric pots stop roots circle and air prune giving more oxygen to the root zone.

My plants are half that size and I haven't performed pollination on them, I don't think it makes sense to rub one female flower to another, I have 1 pepper so far and many flowers and buds which will eventually turn into peppers as well, not everything was plain sailing though, some of the plants grew no buds at all. Guess it could be down to the pick of the litter.

Lovely time lapse mate. Question about the way you pollinated the flowers tho. Did you really need cross pollinate the flowers with each other? I was under the impression that chilli plants were self pollinating and as such didn't need insects or wind to do this.

At month 2 it’s super yellow, then goes full green is that normal? Because mine are all yellow. So is my KSLS but the leaves seem to be leveling off and turning dark green.

Pepper plants are self pollinating. You shouldn't have to assist. Lack of nutrients does affect pollination though.

Plus you need to switch from 18 hours of light in veg, to 12 hours in flower time.

That was a very helpful video. Im doing an indoor grow with 8 total peppers under two 1000W LEDs. Im hoping to have a little better luck with fruiting the peppers with more plants. Im in a controlled room where I can keep the temp at a constant 80 degrees. Are you still planning on moving the plant outdoors this summer?
The reason he hardly got any flowers and no pods is he didnt have anywhere near enough light. IDK how many lumens those 1000 watt led put out but it should be enough. Im using one 8bulb T5 fixture with just 6500k bulbs and have 7 nice pepper plants with a good deal of pods

I can't find any good hot pepper seeds anywhere locally. I guess I should start looking online. I was even going to buy a few peppers and take the seeds out. It appears near impossible to even find habanero or Carolina reapers anywhere. 😢
