Moreover, there were only a few engineers that handled recording, and they made every note from every instrument sound crisp and clear. Now days, when the occasional real musician slips through the gate keepers, their talent goes to waste with a muddled recording, despite all the digital tools.

I like Dust in the Wind but it is kind of plain compared to this song. I would be more partial to The Wall or Miracles Out of Nowhere. There is a lot more going on in those songs to analyze than there is in Dust in the Wind. Also it feels like there are roughly 40,000 TH-cam reactions to Dust in the Wind and maybe a dozen between The Wall and Miracles Out of Nowhere combined.

What a great analysis. I love reactions like this, where the reviewer provides insight into what the musicians are doing. Carry On Wayward Son is, in my opinion, just an objectively good song. Personal tastes vary wildly, but no matter your preferences, you can't deny this is just a great composition and performance. If I remember right, Kerry Livgren composed it over a weekend by himself when they needed one more track for the album. I love the tempo changes, and the lyrics are inspiring yet vague enough to apply to just about anything. Just carry on. Maybe you have been on a dark path, or took a wrong turn, but just keep on and be true to yourself and you'll get there. There'll be peace when you are done.

In the 70's, WPLJ in New York would play entire albums the day they were released. I can remember hearing it for the first time and thinking this is a hit. I remember thinking that this is one of the best rock songs I have ever heard.
I saw them in concert twice in the 70's. They were so professional and provided a wonderful experience. This was rare at the time. Most groups would show up so inebriated that the performance was not enjoyable.
Kerry Livgren would later become a Christian. He was so professional and knew the technical aspects of the music industry that he single handedly revolutionized Contemporary Christian music.

Hello, Jess! My first time seeing you come up in my feed. ☺
I don't know if you've ever covered Prog/Progressive Rock bands before but Kansas was one of them, though they also leaned heavily into Rock and Folk, even Spiritual. The majority of Prog bands were Classically trained musicians who turned that influence to other forms. The different sections of this song are similar to the sections of a Classical piece, compressed and tightened into a radio friendly Rock song.
One of the great aspects of older music, something newer efforts have lost, is the wide array of differing styles that have influenced the music. One single band can display deep knowledge of Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, World, R&B, Doo Wop and even Opera. These varied styles kept the music fresh and interesting, as opposed to the stale repetition of modern.

I saw Kansas live in San Francisco in the late 70's. they were (unbelievably), just as crystal clear live as they were on their recordings. Their mixing was just as perfect. Every word could be heard, and nothing was too loud or too muted. Still my all-time favorite band to this day!!!

It's so great to see young people listening to and dissecting these songs, groups and singers from the 60s and 70s. These people had talent, musical education, creativity and they practiced. It's rare to find that combination these days and I think that is why so many young people are listening to this music. It will train your ears to appreciate something more complicated than what you will find in todays music. And it's inspirational.

Just so you know, the music for the video was the studio recording. For the video, they had the band play the song in an empty studio/performances space. Then the studio recording was matched to the "live" performance.

This is the first time that I've seen you in my feed and what a wonderful surprise! As a writer, what pulls me into a piece, whether it's cinematic, literary, or musical, is the story. This has long been a favorite song due to the profound prose of the piece. I've always understood how music adds dimension to words and leads the listener toward a desired emotion, but I always felt that the words were the foundation. This is hubris, of course. After listening to you explain the genius of the musical composition of this song, I can see how intrinsically words and music are bound together and how each uplifts the other. Brava!

Great analysis, glad you liked them. Kansas is my favorite band. I've probably seen them at least six times. Twice in the front row. If i'm not mistaken, this is the studio version overlaid on a live performance That was close to the release of the song. And being such a tight band ,it looks like the live performance. They still perform today with only 2 original members. The drummer and the curly haired guitarist. But they still put on a hell of a show. They have so much music you would enjoy. I would check out.. dust in the wind, Nobody's home, cheyenne anthem, Song for america.. And many more..🤗🎶🎙🎸🎹🎻🥁🎶

Hello Jess, I'm a new subscriber and former rock vocalist. I wanted to tell you what a great job of analyzing and reacting you're doing. As a vocalist, it's clear you appreciate great harmonies as I do. If I may be so bold as to recommend Crosby, Stills & Nash Live "Helplessly Hoping". This was the first supergroup created from members of several very successful early rock bands and features David Crosby (The Byrds), Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), and Graham Nash (The Hollies) on high-harmony. I believe you'll enjoy their tight harmonizing and hope you'll dive into this amazing group's song list.

Kerry Livgren’s lyrics with Steve Walsh’s vocals are hard to beat. I saw them on this tour in 77, unforgettable.
Kansas were are group of serious musicians, and entertainers. The Wall, Dust in the Wind, and Miracles Out of Nowhere, are all worth listening to. The long haired guy, Robbie Steinhardt was a classically trained violinist, and he is show cased on a lot of their music.
Really made them like no one else.

You will love to analyze the incredible Steve Walsh of KANSAS. He is considered by many as one of the top five singers of this era. I highly recommend "Journey From Mariabronne" which is an astounding composition in either the studio or their live version from "Two For the Show" album. Also "Angels Have Fallen," "Miracles Out of Nowhere," “Song For America” and their only blues track where Steve absolutely kills it called "Lonely Street."
