In my most honest opinion, Japan takes sound quality THE MOST seriously.
I'm an audiophile so when i went to Iwakuni, Japan for 6 months, I loved Japan so much I ended up staying for 2 yrs. I was in audio heaven.

I think Japan became a paradise for audiophiles because of their attention to detail . For recordings, Japanese pressings are always high quality and usually include bonus tracks that you don't find anywhere else. Many rock bands' best live albums are "live in Japan" albums, because of the quality of recording - they always use the best equipment available. Also, Japanese record shops... they are like Disneyland to audiophiles.

And because of very high level of musical culture & knowledge.And because they not loosed "touch" of music. I don't know any audiophile cafe in Germany.Even before pandemic was no such places here. In place where most of classical music born no place to drink nice cafe & listen great cello trio.
I recently bought my first Japanese vinyl LP ; Very impressed! It seems that Japanese people have a real respect for music and culture no matter where it is from.
@@freeman10000 Great! If you are buying used records, pick LPs with obi whenever possible, as they have a better resell value.

Haha....Akihabara in Tokyo is the biggest hi-fi "debauchery" in the world. This neighborhood is a must visit! My father was there way back in 1982. He said great things. Great video, I hope to visit Japan one day. Greetings from Bulgaria!

That's one thing very nice about record shops . . . there's ALWAYS interesting sound happening.
The Audiophile capital of the world, excluding China. I heard that there is a mall in Japan dedicated to audiophiles, Ian from vyfinews showed it on his channel. This is a once in a lifetime trip, wow man enjoy.

The audiophile world in China is still in its infancy but it's there just in a smaller number. I mean, lots of hifi equipment are made in China so it does get into the hands of local consumers. Of course, hifi requires lots of disposable income and more likely to be found in cities where people are going to have more financial resources. Also, a lot of the audiophiles in China are in cities such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou in Guangdong Province since they've had closer and earlier exposure to the audiophiles in Hong Kong.

I love how every single shop has everything meticulously orderer and well presented, so cool.
Me too...its amazing how tidy and clean everything is. In one of these shops (Bootsy's), which i did not include in the video (but its address in the video description) I realized only after a while that I was handling...used records they were so clean!

I am amazed. Beeing a hifi man myself I fantasized out establishing a Cafe with good coffee and with a highest of quality hifi system for the customers to listen to just imagining if people would like it. And there it is existing in the real world in Japan....Amazing
So cool to see Japan holding on to these record/cd shops located in and around back alleys and little quaint streets very endearing to me as it was like this in parts of Australia with fond memories like 78 records in Perth with its winding staircase heritage building with creaking timber floors and BAM record/cd heaven, sadly gone
Record hunting is so much fun. In an on-line ordering and consuming world, we need to go back to this!

I remember finding Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies EP in Akihabara (I was stationed in Tokyo at the time) 6 months before it hit the shelves in the US. I don't know how, but it happened. I still feel like I was in another space and time when I lived in Japan. This was the early nineties, of course.

I was recently in Japan and loved it. I wish I had watched your TH-cam video first as it would have saved me a heap of time trying to find these record stores. Disk Union was fantastic with there four different stores and I was in heaven there. I filled my suitcase with vinyl which I could never afford to do here in Australia. The availability of new and second hand hifi gear is amazing with everything and anything on offer. Great episode and I’m definitely going back to Japanese with an empty suitcase next time.

Around 22:18: those boomboxes were made for Japanese Domestic Market only with FM band range from 76-92 mHz and 100 Voltage 50/60 Hz, compared those with what you have in your home country: 88-108 mHz, 120 Volt 60 Hz in USA and Canada, while in Europe 87.5-108 mHz, 230 Volt 50 Hz. Before you buy any electronics equipment in Japan, PLEASE MAKE SURE that it comply with electronics standard back in your country, otherwise, you will regret it.

Love the Jazz focus of this. Japan is a wonderland for shopping. I was impressed with the quality and variety on Okinawa, but am sure it is even better on the mainland.

It's great to see that there are apparently still places where people care about quality and about the experience of going into a record store or an electronics store. It seems like in the USA and Europe, music has gone to crap, media (like CD's) has gone to crap and audio equipment has gone to crap. Places like BestBuy only have a few systems, all made in China from the cheapest components, with a sound quality that's barely "good enough", not even a Bass and Treble control, etc. Seeing this video makes me wish we could have the 1980s and 1990s back, before everything got destroyed by greedy companies that just wanted to make a quick buck off music lovers that can afford to buy less and less.

Great vid! I live in the US, and have had the great fortune of visiting Japan twice in the past 10 yrs or so. I visited a few of those very shops you went to, and ended up buying so many records that I had to pick up one of those hard shell DJ record cases, which became my 2nd carry on. I certainly wasn’t about to put all those Japanese pressed gems in with my checked luggage!
I ❤️Japan, and if I moved outside of the US, it’d either be to Tokyo or London.

What mic did you use to record in the club?
Nothing fancy! I actually did not plan to do this video until I was at the airport. I just used the one on my phone, although, for the closer shots I used the semi-pro Olympus camera of my wife and I immediately noticed a jump in quality...did you as well?
One of my favorite neighborhoods in Tokyo, that I've spent quite a lot of time in over the years is Ochanamizu. It's famous for it's many record shops, book shops, and musical instrument shops. Some of the stores you show in this video look very familiar. Next time you decide to travel to Japan, check out a bar called "Woodstock Cafe" in Ochanamizu. The owner is an audiophile, with thousands of LP's behind the bar that he's collected all over the world. It's really a lot of fun to hang out with him and listen to his collection.

I have not been to Japan in 19 years, but even then, I remember the media and products being cost prohibitive. Back when CD's were $10.99, in Japan they worked out to $30+ each based on 180 Yen to the dollar.
Things seem to have changed now...
The FM band on the vintage boom boxes won't be compatible with the US and Europe (76-95 MHz) but of course the cassettes will be.

Yes exactly! Actually I am not that insane...its my wife that wanted to get dress as a Maiko and so she needed a Samurai! ;-)
