Thank you so much for this video. I am so glad I found your channel. I have never seen a video of someone breaking down why they are cutting where they are cutting when pruning a bonsai. They just go to town on it and you are left shocked and wondering why so much was cut. This really helps me wrap my mind around the intentional pruning required with bonsai.
Hello Adam. I think you should know that there are more than 20.000 different fuchsia cultivars registered. So you get from really small flowers to big blousy ones . I think that you should choose a hanging fuchsia as a cascade bonsai, and not the Genii it looks like you have as a cascade type. Marinka is a good variety for this kind of style. And as you say, they root very easy, and can become too many sometimes. I am currently training a WALZ Polka as a bonsai which is a very special looking flower that is purple and green with blue pollen.
Hi Adam!! I love trying to guess which branch you are removing next - sometimes I'm right on and sometimes not but you make all of this really fun. I have a fuchsia out in the yard and had no idea that I could form it. So I'm off to go find it and see what's there. Thanks for the education.
Great work Andy. Thanks for all your wise knowledge on Fushias. Here in Melb Australia spring has just started and last week l dug out a 30-year-old Fushia from the garden with a 40mm trunk width. Hoping for new growth shortly to see if the new bonsai project has taken off. And yes, Fushia l found need a lot more water than the rest of the garden even with growing in part shade. And vigorous growers even in our winter.
Hi Adam like most bonsai keepers I have not thought about using fuchsia for bonsai I think there are fuchsia that only last one flowering season, bedding plants which are clearly not suitable, as they are not hardy plants the other is a tree fuchsia which is the type you are demonstrating here even then not all are hardy enough to withstand our winters.Good luck with yours Adam
Hey Joe! Thanks for sharing this! I have found this fuchsia I have to be quite hardy! It's been outdoors here the past 15 years and has gone through every winter with no protection!
Another great video, I have recently discovered your channel and I am slowly working my way through them all! Do Fuscias need organic compost? Or could they grow in a bonsai soil such as akadama, pumice, grit type?
I started some fuchsia bonsai this past spring! I have one that looks to have the same flowers as yours and my other has multi petal flower the same colour. Still twigs compared to yours though LOL Great video!
What is your percentage of perlite to compost mix? And where did you get that watering head that you put on the bottle to water the plants? (7:36) Thank you
@mercamg9312 Winters are quite mild here. Some winters you get about -1, -2 Celsius. Last year we had a lot of minus 5. Guess I will try keeping one in a pot in the greenhouse and see how it goes. In my garden bed they die back and regrow the following spring, not ideal for bonsai that.
I have found they do well outside all winter 😊 With snow they are fine too! Though if it gets anywhere below -5 id protect them to be on the safe side!
you should see my cannabis bonsai this year lol(its legal here). im going to let it dry like a bunch of roses upside down and then have it as a non living decoration/ "bonsai". never thought of fuchsia as a bonsai subject tho. ill have to keep my eye out for some thanks for the idea adam!
Oh wow nice! I always wanted to give that plant a go! (It's not legal here though) I imagine it is similar to Bonchi (Chilli Bonsai) No worries! Let me know if you try it Mike!
Omg I have to get a fuschia! I am getting in to terrariums and realized they are perfect and beautiful vessels for creating cuttings for bonsai too! Cute pot you made! It would be so fun picking out pots for fuschia bonsai. I think is is my favorite flower after all, and so similar to bleeding hearts which I adore, I suppose I could bonsai that hanging basket that's fixing to croak outside now?
hummmph not really a ''serious'' Bonsai which is the main thing wrong with the hobby luckily we have young people like this not stuck in the past Go for it they grow fast, cheap to buy , have nice small flowers make excellent literati style/root over rock mistakes fix easily and quickly only downside thing is its not a long term project the other one is root over rock Chrysanthemum which is a whole little side business in Japan
Your channel is a rising star on the youtube bonsai sky. Keep it up!
Hey! Thank you so much for your support @norWindChannel 😄❤️
Very good video. I'm a great fan of fuchsias.
oh! I have a fuchsia plant and the idea of using it as Bonsai material had never crossed my mind. Thanks for the Idea!
Why not give it a go! Tag me on instagram if you decide to do it!! 😊🌱

Hey thanks! I'm Adam btw! 🙂 Ohhh in Australia I can imagine how they would keep growing all year round! Nice one!
Great close up clear footage, lovely trees. Well done
Hey thanks!
Great video! I love my Fuchia pre bonsai but I find I had to put them in drier medium and they are doing better for me now. ❤
Ohh good to know!! Maybe different cultivars take up water at different rates! Mine would shrivel up if I did that!
those flowers are so cool looking
Hey Eyeteeoh! They are!!
Great video, thank you for making it
This is a wonderful channel! Your amazing
Aw thank you so much Toni!
Great video as always Adam. You should let some of them produce fruit, they taste amazing, like mini sweet grapes.

Excellent instructions. I have a Fuschia I’m going to try developing.

What is your percentage of perlite to compost mix? And where did you get that watering head that you put on the bottle to water the plants? (7:36) Thank you
I got the watering head on ebay! My ratio is usually 1:1 or sometimes just a little extra compost!
👍👌🙂
😊🌱🤗
What do you do with them during the winter?
if you have a mild winter they will still grow vigorously. Don't know about snow covered winters. Take inside near a window probably best.

hi. in melb Aust its a bit warmer and rarely get zero so ok for fushia. no dieback.@@ashaion1777

Ah nice! They are lovely trees!! I actually think about 15 years ago.. the Fuchsia in this video actually came from a hanging basket!! 😊
😊🌳🌲❤✂
can i just ask why if you don't need bonsai tool you don't do video without then no disrepect as great videos
The tools aren't 100% necessary but they do make certain jobs a lot easier 😄 When I got started I just used a pair of garden scissors
Hey Scott, If you look at some older videos you’ll see Andy does demo with general garden tools.
@nwilliams1540 I'm Adam btw 😄
I knew that 🤟😊
hummmph not really a ''serious'' Bonsai which is the main thing wrong with the hobby luckily we have young people like this not stuck in the past

If it works for Bonsai then why not give it a go! 😊 Ohh I haven't heard of that! Sounds interesting!
