My niece cried when her aunt (my wife) trimmed her hair just a little shorter than she wanted. Her dad, my brother, hammed it up and told her, "It's so short, we'll have to call you Fred". That was over 50 years ago, and family still calls her Freddie! We saw Ray at CabaRay last year, and expect to go back before Ray retires (we're the same age, both like what we do, and neither of us has retired yet).
I decided to try something different one time. I cut my quite long hair up to my neck. I walked in the house and my two sons cried. Almost 20 years later and I have not cut it since lol
I wound up bald when I said the wrong words. I didn’t go to that barber again. I also had a situation when my barber got fired. Following that, my haircuts weren’t nearly as good. Some time later, I stumbled upon him at another barbershop 18 blocks west of my apartment. After I stumbled upon him, I went to him again. I have been going to him for twelve years altogether. There’s so much truth in this song!
I heard that back in the late '80s.I AM from Coos Bay,Oregon.Loved it.We do have alot of trees here.Sadly, our lumber, trucking and papermills are long gone.We still have loggers here.
I live in the Willamette valley, same up here.. liberals killed us... (If you like LOGGING music check out Craig and Terry (gypo crummy is probably third biggest hit).
David Sain Oh yeah! I have listened to Ray Stevens since I was a kid. It's ridiculous how over-sensitive people have gotten. All those old cartoons with their portrayals of the races at the time? I laugh my head off at them cuz of how ridiculous the point of view was back then.
As some people have mentioned on here, the 2nd verse is missing from this music video as it was cut down for time. Even as it was released in its single-version, the runtime is still 4 minutes, which is pretty long for a comedy single. The choice was made to edit a verse out for the music video which also helped keep the production costs down. This is a pretty common practice as many songs have a single-version which is shorter for videos & airplay. Thank you!
I was just posting about this when I glanced down and saw that you talked about it. Glad I can read! BTW, do you have a link for the full-length Ahab the Arab? I had that album for decades before I found that there was more to the story...the version I have ends with Clyde saying EEyah EEyah...and that's the story...." Never made much sense to me . :)
The album cut featured a visit to three barbers. The second barber visited was into punk rock and a whole lot of other things. The visit to the second barber was edited out when the song was issued as a single.
A captist? And i thought i was the only one ;) Seriously though, this song is the truth. If i didnt live so close to Coos Bay, OR. i'd go back to my childhood barber!

With all the hair salons and barber shops closed due to the CV-19 pandemic, I'm beginning to resemble this song Ray. (Groan!) :-( I'm actually at the point today where even a badly done self-haircut will be an improvement... so, here goes nothing! Wish me luck! :-\
Saw a new barbershop $30 haircut I'm greatful 4 my barbershop with a tinny sounding radio speaker plays the oldies station a old pup that hangs out in the shop mounted perch in the empty fish tank deer head on the wall magazine selection of trains/ model trains/ guns/ deer hunting only 1 barber at all times in his 70s with shakey hands that causes the scissors to stab me every now and then yet his mind is still there and all day long telling dad jokes and will never judge you no matter what walk of life you come from and if you ask for anything other then a trim or buzzcut it won't look all that great yet he's been a staple of the area since long b4 I was born 33 years back and you just can't beat the old time barbershop and the customer base it really gives you a great appreciation for the past and ones elders brings me right back to my youth and the shop I grew up in just like the lyrics in the song and with today's inflation its a blessing still for all these years he only charges $5 for any haircut you ask for $2 more if you ask for a face shave me and the entire city will deeply miss him and his shop when his time comes or his his mind goes because I don't know of a single shop just like his and how it used to always be instead you'll be lucky to find a place charging $18 a buzzcut and its always some gal fresh out of school or thick on the accent that makes it hard to hold a conversation while the top 7 same songs play all day long I truly feel his beloved establishment is thing of the past and truly a time machine he even has a working corded rotary phone and just for the record the mounted perch in the fish are real......REAL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ray Stevens humor is original and kind of feels like Mark Twain!
