Not too long ago, I remember struggling to complete the portion of brand research in my internship documentation. I felt that my information was just all over the place, and my document lacked a clear flow. now that I've watched this video, I can modify my document much better than I did, before. What makes a brand is actually the process that is done behind it, right from brand research, to knowing your consumer to market research. All plays a prime role while doing a research. Things that must be kept in mind while doing research is understanding your brand and to do so one must know your costumer or consumer, knowing your aspiration and competition brand. From this vedio, i understand .....we must always understand the DNA of brand and the demographic of our clients. We should know about our aspirational and competitive brand both and always looks at runway trends, never forget our youth because they are the biggest Market or fashion and Apparel. We need to understand the pricing area of any garment and the reason behind it. We should capture the fit, colour, silhouette, detailing of that garment . While doing the trend research we should do brand research , forecast references and market research . The most important is to understand the brand on the basis of customer, where does the brand sell, Aspirational brands, competition brands. Forecast research can be from WGSN, material suppliers, printing unit, textile mills etc Also keeping in mind the runway trends, youth as it is our biggest target market. Then about the market research it should be about the trends. competition etc and also the influencing stores and how are the trying to convey their stories. Thank you for sharing your insights on one of the most crucial topic "Trend Research" for building a successful career in creative industry. While analysing the business environment surrounding our own brand, we tend to forget the analysis of "aspirational brands", which is highlighted here. Another learning that I am taking with me is that forecasting can also be done through our material suppliers, be it a small supplier of button, trims or zipper. However, I want more insights on how to determine aspirational brands. Is it necessary that our aspirational brand should offer same product category or deal with same consumer base or should have same DNA as our brand?
The learning i figured in the is that the video contains a certain amount of information, and gives a bracket to develop ideas depending on the need of consumer or developer. Also it talks about the easier ways to forecast the trend and developing the designs/concepts/stories ahead of time.
The video was insightful upon understanding the trend research , though the question still remains in the mind about how to frame a trend story as there's lots of info regarding anything and everything , how to cut short and know whats relevant to my theme. But, a question I have is how do international brands and trend research like that of WGSN effectively lend itself to the Indian context when we are working with an absolute different array of textiles and preferences?

Hi Richa, As I mentioned in our session, Just the way WGSN is a wast Ocean of Inputs, it is meant to aim at a wast possibility of application from the information it applies. If we limit those references to one category, it will not relate well. And pointer reference based on Trend or creativity is only to trigger your senses and not provide Clear Directives. To answer 2. The most important Story all brands are looking for is comfort-wear for WFH dressing :)

So I'm confused. A lot of designers, when starting out, will rely on their instincts and the drive inside them to take a leap into the unknown. For instance, Yamamoto wanted to see women in men's clothing, simple cuts, monochromatic colors, etc, which he thought was more feminine. I highly doubt he first interviewed a ton of women to see how they would feel about his radical idea. He went with his gut feeling, and it turned out successful. For some things, that's what works. Ppl who are passionate about fashion have instincts for these things. So I don't see why forecasting and following trends is so vital. What if you want to break the rules? Introduce a new style to the market? Are you going to sit there doing market research? At the max, one would design a few pieces and show family and friends and get their opinions. Cheaper than hiring a market research company.
Very valid thought, I do not disagree. I also want to share with you few pointers. Out of 100 only a handful like 8-10 designers make it to Yamamotos level. There are 1000s of design schools all over the world, it is only a few who you will see make it to a level. It is not for everybody. Running a fashion label is more of a Business first and design aesthetics second for majority of the brands and here I am addressing the fashion and apparel industry who do not define their own trends but create accessible fashion to a larger audience. To ensure these brands are time right and market ready, forecasting is important. Otherwise what is the relevance of an expensive website like WGSN. I am happy to discuss on this . :)

Not too long ago, I remember struggling to complete the portion of brand research in my internship documentation. I felt that my information was just all over the place, and my document lacked a clear flow. now that I've watched this video, I can modify my document much better than I did, before. Extremely helpful, admire your way of teaching.
Even if you address any 3 pointers , you would achieve an indepth research. and if you feel it is upto the mark then you should showcase your Research in your portfolio.

This video gave a clear direction on how actually research is done in the apparel industry. What makes a brand is actually the process that is done behind it, right from brand research, to knowing your consumer to market research. All plays a prime role while doing a research.
Things that must be kept in mind while doing research is understanding your brand and to do so one must know your costumer or consumer, knowing your aspiration and competition brand.
Forecasting is a very important step while researching. One must know what is going in your field. This can be done through different forecasting site, material suppliers, textile mills etc.

Trend research includes three important parts:
Brand research : Understanding your brand, make it your first priority
-How to identify your brand : Customer, aspirational brands (inspiration), competition brands
Forecast references : WGSN (runway trends, youth), material suppliers (mills, printing house, trims, buttons & zippers)
Market research : Capturing trends, competition brands, aspirational brands. Finding out what are their stories are. Trend stories can be found in their brand tags, posters, etc. Capture pricing (reason behind it), capture colors, fits, details, silhouettes.
Capture sustainability (process, material blend, usage). Capture innovation (product/marketing and messaging to sell)

From this vedio, i understand .....we must always understand the DNA of brand and the demographic of our clients. We should know about our aspirational and competitive brand both and always looks at runway trends, never forget our youth because they are the biggest Market or fashion and Apparel.
We need to understand the pricing area of any garment and the reason behind it.
We should capture the fit, colour, silhouette, detailing of that garment .
As a designer we will understand what is our aspirational and competitive brands focusing on and what we are focusing on.

This video helped me gather information about how to do research on market and how it should be time right and market ready as we are designing a collection to be in market not for ourselves . While doing the trend research we should do brand research , forecast references and market research . The most important is to understand the brand on the basis of customer, where does the brand sell, Aspirational brands, competition brands. Forecast research can be from WGSN, material suppliers, printing unit, textile mills etc Also keeping in mind the runway trends, youth as it is our biggest target market. Then about the market research it should be about the trends. competition etc and also the influencing stores and how are the trying to convey their stories. Capturing pricing and understanding why a certain product it market such price be it expensive studying why is it so. Understanding what are the competition brands focusing on where should our focus be. Studying different ways of sustainability , including innovations all of this together will help in creating good research points of our design project.

Thank you for sharing your insights on one of the most crucial topic "Trend Research" for building a successful career in creative industry. While analysing the business environment surrounding our own brand, we tend to forget the analysis of "aspirational brands", which is highlighted here. Another learning that I am taking with me is that forecasting can also be done through our material suppliers, be it a small supplier of button, trims or zipper.
However, I want more insights on how to determine aspirational brands. Is it necessary that our aspirational brand should offer same product category or deal with same consumer base or should have same DNA as our brand?
The learning i figured in the is that the video contains a certain amount of information, and gives a bracket to develop ideas depending on the need of consumer or developer.
Also it talks about the easier ways to forecast the trend and developing the designs/concepts/stories ahead of time.

But, a question I have is how do international brands and trend research like that of WGSN effectively lend itself to the Indian context when we are working with an absolute different array of textiles and preferences?

Hi Richa, As I mentioned in our session, Just the way WGSN is a wast Ocean of Inputs, it is meant to aim at a wast possibility of application from the information it applies. If we limit those references to one category, it will not relate well. And pointer reference based on Trend or creativity is only to trigger your senses and not provide Clear Directives. To answer 2. The most important Story all brands are looking for is comfort-wear for WFH dressing :)

So I'm confused. A lot of designers, when starting out, will rely on their instincts and the drive inside them to take a leap into the unknown. For instance, Yamamoto wanted to see women in men's clothing, simple cuts, monochromatic colors, etc, which he thought was more feminine. I highly doubt he first interviewed a ton of women to see how they would feel about his radical idea. He went with his gut feeling, and it turned out successful. For some things, that's what works. Ppl who are passionate about fashion have instincts for these things. So I don't see why forecasting and following trends is so vital. What if you want to break the rules? Introduce a new style to the market? Are you going to sit there doing market research? At the max, one would design a few pieces and show family and friends and get their opinions. Cheaper than hiring a market research company.

I also want to share with you few pointers.
Out of 100 only a handful like 8-10 designers make it to Yamamotos level.
There are 1000s of design schools all over the world, it is only a few who you will see make it to a level. It is not for everybody.
Running a fashion label is more of a Business first and design aesthetics second for majority of the brands and here I am addressing the fashion and apparel industry who do not define their own trends but create accessible fashion to a larger audience. To ensure these brands are time right and market ready, forecasting is important.
Otherwise what is the relevance of an expensive website like WGSN.
