- Today Marcus is behind the wheel of the unloved JDM icon of the 90's: The Nissan Skyline R33 GTR. In this review Marcus finally completes his experience with the GTR trilogy. R32 GTR, R33 GTR, and R34 GTR. This example is a 1995 V-Spec in midnight purple which happens to be the most sought after engine/colour combination in the Skyline world. With a twin-turbo RB26 DETT under the hood putting down 440hp down to all 4 wheels, this is an extremely capable sports car that's ready and willing to take on even the best sports cars of 2016. I might be blind, but to me, the R33 looks SO MUCH BETTER than the R34...
Ok the front of the R34 is sexy, but the rear? R33 is much better.
I'd love to own any GTR, but the R33 is easly my favorite, and that example is almost spot on.

Agreed the R33 has been my favorite mainly just because of the sleek rear, I’ve seen pictures of R33s with R34 front end swap, I gotta say that conversion makes the best looking GTR possible
The R33 has ALWAYS been my favorite skyline, never really understood all the hate. I live in the USA and im so happy that they're almost legal here, i hope to have a GTS-T someday!
To me, the R32 GTR was the fetus GTR, as in the face of the new GTR era.
The R33 GTR was the awkward puberty phase that everyone went through.
The R34 GTR was the young stud who finished puberty and was the hot shit around town.
And the R35 GTR is the matured and sophisticated guy who settled down with a wife and kids but still knows how to have fun.
This was originally used to describe the various generations of M3!

R33 has always been my favorite. Lately, the R32 has started to become more attractive to me as well. I love the R34, just like the older ones better.

Marcus your videos are great and the production value is stunning. A word of advice. Stop saying aftermarket...we know. Tell us about the actual parts the owner has used. How the suspension feels. And what part the was upgraded and how it dynamically changes the car. The was a good video but the other ones of Skylines have been way better content wise.

R33's are the heaviest of the skylines and the stock suspension was extremely soft so they got called boats because of handling and weight. Mostly because of the Butt hurt but. R33 came out with the best driveline really

True story. The R33 beat the R32 by around 22 seconds. Everyone thinks the 32 is faster and more nimble, not true. The chassis is by far much better on the R33 than the 32. I'm not sure about the 34 lap time.
R34 is the slowest GTR around the ring.. by about 29 seconds. R34 Nur edition runs 8:28 seconds, r32 runs 8:21, R33 normal runs 8:01 and the Vspec runs 7:59. R34 is the most rubbish, overpriced POS GTR.

R33 looks the best performs at a high standard. It looks fun to drive and not so sophisticated. The best thing about it's you can modify the car and it won't break down.
BTW I am 15 so I have not driven this car or been in one but I would definitely get one in the future.

The R33 has always been my favorite GT-R. To me it looks the best of all of them. When I traveled to Japan in the 90’s when I was in the Navy, I always dreamed of having one in the US. Unfortunately, we were regulated to Gran Turismo games.. 😕🥺

R33 is NOT the most heavy GTR, that will be the R34 GTR. And it does
have a shorter wheelbase than the R34 and it's quicker around a circuit.

1. You can buy a Skyline R33 GTR for less than $20,000 up here in Canada if you search right. About the same price as a brand new Toyota Yaris or something. I'd say that's pretty affordable! We also just put out a review recently on a Subaru BRZ, also less than $20,000.

The R33 GT-R is extremely similar to the R34 GT-R in many ways because the R34 was developed on the R33 chassis. Nissans did not strive to make the R34 faster than the R33 because it had already proved to be the first mass production sports car to lap the Nürburgring in under 8 minutes. They aimed to make the car more appealing to people who thought the R33 was too big (even though it's faster and better than the R32 in every objective way aside from being slightly heavier) and to make the R34 easier to drive fast. The R33 is actually lighter than the R34 though it has a longer wheelbase. They utilize the exact same suspension/drivetrain with the exception of updated differentials and a better Getrag transmission. Similarities between the two are further proven by similar chassis mounting for things that were not even initially utilized on the R33. One notable example of this is the mounts for the R34 V-Spec rear diffuser on the R33 that serve no purpose but can used for the same purpose. The same mounts for racing harnesses in the cabin of the R33 under the rear seats are also present in the R34. The R34 had a plastic cam gear cover instead of a metal one on the R32/R33, and aside from that the R33 motor 96-98 were the same aside from the turbos. The big differences are the aesthetics externally, the interior, and the transmission.

vtecboi18 Certain states are lenient like Florida and you can get them titled and insured legitimately there. Black Ops Performance imports and helps out with the process. I'm sure there are companies in other states as well.

I get haters sometimes with my r33 gtr, saying I should have gotten a r32 but if you are looking at chassis standpoint the r33 is the better chassis with improved suspension and updated electronics. Hell people seem to forget stock for stock the the r33 gtr was over 20 seconds faster than a r32 on the Nürburgring.

You get that tiny bit of tail slide because the R33 GTR is not AWD untill the system feels like it needs to be. In normal everyday driving the GTR is just RWD. Once it feels the rear end is losing grip, the front diff starts helping out too. A little fun fact :P
the Atessa ET-S Pro is the AWD system it uses
1996 NISMO - LM Limited and 1997 NISMO 400R, both is alsoe R33 with AWD, youst see skyline wikia or search for 400R of Skyline R33 :)
The 4 wheel steering might also be what he's feeling and mistaking it for slip.

Someone else made the point below, that a simple Google search would have revealed that one of the common myths about this car, that it's heavier than the 34, is simply wrong. As you have a large following, and as a 33 owner, would appreciate proper and accurate journalism. Otherwise nicely done video, was enjoyable.
I apologize for the mistake! I was reading the specs of the R33 GTR 400r now I realize.. which is 38lbs heavier than the R34 GTR. The normal R33 GTR is about 30 or 40 lbs lighter than the R34 GTR, you'd be correct. The difference between a backpack in the trunk or not. Like I said in the video, negligible weight for sure!

@@brownbriansjeep9020 RB26's are only reliable at factory 280HP, any more else than that especially with stock internals can give reliability issues which fortunately can be solved via preventative maintenance with one example being a oil catch can to collect oil in the head

I didnt realize this car was unloved. A lot of people in my area love it and crave driving it. Ive never seen hate towards it. My favorite skyline model personally.
SubieSnacks people don't hate it but the R32 was so raw which people love and the R34 was more refined people feel the R33 had nothing new when it came to the table except a bigger wheelbase and a lot of people said it was to "boat like" i still think it's better then the new GTR
The R33 was a major jump from the R32. The R32 suffered with uplift issues and balance issues Nissan set up a project called sophisticated strength this would give the R33 a wider lower stance and then with new computerised technology the car was designed super aerodynamic so every line and curve was make to give the car it's best aerodynamics. Now with better rigidity and balance and lighter parts etc the R33 was and still is the fastest skyline around the nurburgring and was the fastest production car around the nurburgring.

The r33 is also my favorite out of all the skylines yet I find myself being one of the few who finds it so... Most love the r32 or r34, which are amazing vehicles in their own rights, but for some reason I've always been entranced by the 33...

Owned by a GTR tuning house called Vspec performance. Insured for over $400,000.
I think 33s are the most attractive of the 3 big skylines. 32s/4s are nice dont get me wrong. But theres just something about the lines of the body panels, the front end of the 32 and the rear of the 34 in particular just dont really match the rest of the car IMO. I think every little bit of the 33 is near perfect visually

Was the r33 based on the laurel chassis? If So why? What chassis were the r32 and r34 built on? Also why was the r33 made longer than the rest? Sorry I just love the shape of the r33 but it seems like it feels much bigger than the otter two from what others say.
