      @@prettysparklez1195 same! My mom started me on it and this was after I had already had a terrible relationship with food. It literally got to the point where I would avoid meals so that I could sneak in a chocolate or 2. I was definitely not eating enough, especially because I started working out for very specific amounts of time to make sure I was just “burning off the extra calories” from the day

    • @Montaged

    • @lauradev6371
      @lauradev6371 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      @@Montaged I think it really depends per person, I thought it was very useful for a few months as it was useful for me to kind of get a feeling of what portion sizes for me are large enough to be satisfying while still being not overly calorie heavy which I think helped me a lot considering my balance had really gone away during lockdown (not enough movement and too much snacking) BUT it does make you super calorie conscious and constantly thinking about if your food still fits in your calorie budget which in itself is already disordered eating and if you’re already prone to that it can really spiral I think. And because it also increases the amount of calories within your budget if you exercise / move more I really got into a “I need to earn my food” kind of mindset which is also not very healthy I think.
      For me i think the main thing for which it was useful was learning to make some healthy switches in my regular diet but I can definitely see the downsides!

      Counting calories can be SUCH a helpful tool if you need to lose or gain weight to be healthier, but you're definitely right that it isn't for everyone. I think it gets dangerous if someone isn't doing a bit of extra research on what their body needs (pretty sure MyFitnessPal suggested that I eat 200-300 calories less than would be appropriate for losing weight at a healthy rate). And also, I think having strong self-confidence and/or self-acceptance is necessary to count calories in a healthy, non-obsessive way.

    The food sensitivity tests were a huge vital tool in identifying the foods that have been causing me chronic nausea, diarrhea and stomach pains my whole life. It’s actually improved my relationship with food since I’m not constantly developing new food aversions and can eat without fear of pain.
    I have to stay completely away from eggs, chicken / duck, cashews and canola oil/rapeseed, and only eat small amounts of dairy, gluten, wheat, almond and soy. I would not have ever figured that out on my own, but using the sensitive test to guide a food elimination diet helped a lot. I’ve gotten really good at making a bunch of different meals and snacks so my diet is so my diet is varied, and I love that I can eat the same thing 2-3 times for the first time in my life! Woohoo! Life so so much better when your stomach feels neutral. I hadn’t experienced that before this year (and I’m 35 now). I can actually tell when I’m hungry and full for the first time ever too!

      I was thinking about this when she said that. I have a number of friends who, for a number of reasons, are sensitive to certain things. I have two friends who can't eat much red meat without getting stomach issues, my mom's friend is sensitive to gluten (not celiac, but if she eats gluten her whole body gets excruciatingly achy for days), and I have other friends who are sensitive to certain dairy products, certain oils in processed foods, etc.
      Food sensitivities are legitimate, and they deserve the same recognition as allergies. Just because they won't cause anaphylaxis or hives doesn't mean someone wants to be achy and nauseous all day/week!

    How to restrict air? I believe I can think of something😂
    Hmmm... there's chemicals everywhere. So hold your breath (or if you can't do that: don't breathe in) whenever you walk past something that has fragrance (perfumes, cleaning supplies, etc.), next to a street or near a drain (don't know what could be in there).
    Also most definitely don't breathe in too deeply whenever you are in a closed space with any other people. They could have a respiratory infection and you'll catch it too if the germs get deep in your lungs.
    Also oxygen makes iron things like rust and we have iron in our body. Imagine what too much oxygen could be doing to us!
    And if course the most important thing: breathing in deeply makes your belly expand and we know we don't want that of course.
    The only problem with all this is that nobody would gain any money with all this oh so wonderfull advice, so unlimited breathing it is for now. Our poor properly oxygenated brains... we have to be conscious and aware of all this diet bullshit without having the joyous risk of fainting and brain damage.

    The issue comes from the belief that society as a whole, as well as targeted marketing, that dieting is inherently *right*, that it is always healthy or useful for everyone, and that if it doesn’t work you’re just doing it wrong.

    • @Lau3464l
      @Lau3464l ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I hope this explanation helps: The food sensitivity tests don’t actually test for food sensitivity. They test for the antibodies that our body creates any time we are exposed to something, which are called IgG. So if you eat gluten or dairy for example (which are common in peoples diets) even days before the test, you will have IgG antibodies in your system because your body recognized what you ate. So then people will see these results come up on the test and say it means you’re intolerant or sensitive to the food, which isn’t the case. Just because an immune response happens, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t eat it or that it’s the source of our health issues, it just means our immune system is acknowledging the food we ate! It’s like a record-keeper, not an alarm signal.

    • @alinapritchett9276
      @alinapritchett9276 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even if there are false positives they help narrow the window for people who need to do food elimination diets to see if their symptoms are food based. At least the test I did had a bunch of literature basically explaining what you just said and how to conduct an elimination trail.
      I didn’t want to take one because of the false positives. I ultimately did because nausea and stomach pain was causing too many “what to eat?” arguments with my spouse. It’s hard to enjoy food when you feel horrible all the time, and what you enjoyed yesterday made the nausea worse so you don’t want to eat it again for ages.
      My food sensitivity test helped me identify that huge handful of foods that were causing me chronic nausea despite not having any major bowel issues like celiacs etc. I’ve been complaining to doctors my whole life who have basically said I was fine. No one suggested a good elimination diet or explained how to do one. After identifying the foods causing me issues I’ve been nausea free for almost a year and my quality of life has improved drastically.

      There's nothing inherently wrong with them, when they're done with a doctor and/or nutritionalist in order to determine if there are actual food sensitivities. In some cases, the ones I'm sure she's referring to, the person is given a false positive and then completely cuts out what once might have been a large portion of their diet with no regulation from any kind of doctor to make sure you're still getting the nutrients you need.

    Keto makes me LIVID. My baby brother was on the actual ketogenic diet for extreme, life threatening epilepsy. It’s considered so dangerous that one of the largest pediatric neurology units in the country had only **2** children on it for the 2.5 years he did the diet. And that was in the 90s, when there were way less options for chemically controlling epilepsy.
    (The seizures won in the end. He died during a 6 hour grand mal seizure at the age of 10. The diet helped a ton while he could do it but then they discovered he had cystic fibrosis as well and he had to stop the diet. Experimental meds bought us a few more years until they, too, failed. So they truly saved that kind of option for the most extreme cases.)

    Edit: I dont listen to the “macros” or protein amounts or even eat under 1700 calories, literally all I do is log my food and that’s it. Maybe that’s why it’s helped me and not others 🤔

    The “that’s the caloric needs of a toddler” thing bothers me. A toddler should eat around 1200 calories per day to grow. Toddlers are also insanely active and have a very high metabolism in most cases. That’s how they’re designed and of course, as they grow, their caloric needs increase. Many women who want to lose around ten pounds are also told to eat around 1200 calories per day for a set (and short) amount of time, not because that’s an adequate amount of calories for their dietary needs, but because that’s literally how they’ll lose weight. Eating more than that will not be effective for weight loss for a lot of women. That’s not the same thing as saying that women should only eat 1200 calories per day indefinitely. But by constantly pointing out that 1200 calories per day is the caloric needs of a (growing) toddler, people are basically making women feel like their weight loss goals are ALWAYS unhealthy and wrong. They don’t always have to be, and the amount of food a toddler eats in a day is irrelevant to that discussion.

    • @catboy_official
      @catboy_official ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! I'm short and very inactive, so my maintenance is just over 1600 calories. To lose 1 to 2 lbs a week, I'd have to eat about 1200 calories a day, which feels like a lot when I mostly eat fresh produce and healthy protein. It's often difficult to eat that much, tbh.

    I was concerned about my weight (in the obese category) which is not healthy and you cannot convince me otherwise. I have family history of heart disease, cholesterol issues, and type 2 diabetes. I asked my doctor for help because I could not get the weight off. I was basically told I wasn’t overweight enough for them to do anything. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year later (at 27). I still couldn’t get any doctor to help me with my weight. I did a lot of research and using the carnivore diet and supplements I was able to lose 30 pounds and bring my A1C below the threshold for diabetes. I have felt so much better since getting that weight off. I get the problems diet culture can have on one’s mental health. But feeling like crap all the time was way worse for mine.

    I agree with most of your content but.... coming for food sensitivity tests? Thats like saying allergies arent real. Im lactose intolerant, i developed it later in life but for someone who harps on eating what makes you feel good.... seems a little inconsiderate to people with issues.
    Im lactose intolerant, and if i ignored it i would be in pain and eouldnt be able to eat anything from the nausea. I have a friend with gluten sensitivity who gets migraines and chronic stomach pain from wheat. Im even sensitive to things like kiwi and pineapple. Its not diet culture, kiwi and pineapple arent even considered "unhealthy" and i still eat a lot of other fruits. I just have a medical sensitivity.
    Lumping in actual medical tests with fad diets is ridiculous as well as unhelpful to everyone with a food sensitivity, and if your goal is to actually help people struggling with food issues, i hope you realign your thinking.

      Having a dr do the proper tests to check for food allergies and paying $100+ dollars for a swab to tell you your sensitive to anything you’ve eaten in the last few days are two different things.
      In none of her videos does she say allergies aren’t real, and at no point does she imply you should ignore them, especially life threatening ones.
      There are sensitivity tests on the market with no scientific basis behind them, just companies looking to make a quick buck. I saw one for sale in target that said on the box all you had to do was send in a cheek swab to find out what foods you’re “sensitive” to. And there are so many people who have had “dozens of food sensitivities” find out they had an actual allergy (like gluten or lactose) leaving there stomach vulnerable and that one specific allergy left them open to be bothered by other foods. But once the actual problem was under control they could eat all the other foods with no issue.

    Intermittent fasting doesnt seem like it's that bad... obviously if you go with "the longer the better" then it wont be healthy, but thats why you balance things.
    The whole idea is that our bodies aren't built to always have food at any given moment, so giving it some time to use the storage it has helps. Generally speaking you do it at night too, so you spend most of the time sleeping and then just don't eat a couple hours before hand or after, depending on what is most comfortable for you. It's a diet actually built on sustainablity instead of fast and unhealthy eating habits that won't last very long.

    Dude fr! Keto and MyFitnessPal got me messed up as a teen! I got such bad anxiety from it. Like, The darn app got on me for eating an orange! MyFitnessPal scolded me for eating a slice a of cheese! My doctor did not help. I still struggle with my weight to this day. My old doc was always like: "Well you obviously aren't trying hard enough. Eat less move more. You must be lying."
    Like doc, you're telling me that I need to eat less and move more, and that I'm not trying hard enough when I was literally eating 1200 calories a day on keto and exercising until I dropped. But I wasn't trying hard enough? Thank God I gave up because I probably would have landed in the hospital. I was cold, shaking, dizzy, had brain fog, and was exhausted all the time during those several months.
    About 7 years later, I go to the E.R. for extreme abdominal pain, turns out I have PCOS and that was why I was struggling to lose weight. 😡 I had all the symptoms and my old doctor chose to ignore it and gaslight me instead!

    okay, intermittent fasting does work if done correctly. it can even help with diabetics and regulate your nervous system better than a regular diet. It does work best if you live within a routine, so it can go badly if you don't stick to it and eat enough while in your time frame. And having 8 hours to get whole and hearty 3 meals is not bad at all.

    As someone who grew up in a household with ulcerative crohn's, colitis, celiac, food allergies, lactose intolerance, IBS, etc., I DEFINITELY wouldn't lump food sensitivity in with those. Being in so much pain it feels likke your stomach acid has melted through your gut isn't fun. Watching your brother be in so much pain he can hardly get out of bed for months isn't fun. All the doctor bills. All the health issues. We were legitimately afraid my brother was going to die at one point. It's definitely NOT about weight issues. We all need to be able to function. Not being in immense pain all the time is truly ideal.

    At least half these are useful tools that have been misapplied though. Mileage does vary. Knowing yourself and your own triggers is so important to ensure you use the tool that's right for you (or no tool at all for some). Like for example, IF can be incredibly triggering for some people, but for me personally I actually find that it helps me be more balanced and LESS disordered. But that's to be expected, we are all different and there's no one size fits all.
