Many thanks for this video, Shane. That's the first time I've actually heard what the famous TS does without any gimmicks or hype. I get it now! Very usuable, great sounding pedal. Cheers! 👍
I still have an original TS808 Tube Screamer, and I've never needed to use anything else. The LED doesn't light up any more but the pedal works as well as when I was given it by the bass player/Lead singer of the nameless reception lounge band for which I played guitar. It is not as harsh or as grainy as the TS9, and although it can get spitty in the high end, this is easily tamed by the tone knob. In thr past I've recorded with it plugged straight into a mic input on reel to reel, and got a lively but warm snap to the sound which was very natural sounding, and easy to dial in.
I got one of these when they came out. It's certainly my favourite version because it's less 'nasally' and it stacks really well. I use it with the Kernon giving me 3 layers without using midi. Nice review, thanks.
Completely different pedals. The BD-2 imitates amp overdrive, the hipsters seem to weirdly think it the best pedal ever (probably because they don't understand gain). Tube Screamers are usually used to goose an amp into a higher state of overdrive and are one of they most important pedals you can own (if you use tube amps amd play at higher gain).
Besides my BOSS tuner and Vox wah, this is my only pedal and I've used it for years. I play Blues and Rock n Roll and it really works for the stuff I play. I play into a Fender tweed Twin 57 reissue or a tweed Blues Deluxe on the clean channel. The pedal stays on all the time and that is my tone...mimic'ing a cranked amp sound at lower volumes for bar gigs where I can't crank the amp too loud. I set the gain on full, tone about 1 o'clock and volume just about even with the amp. I love it's midrangy overdrive and it is a tad smoother compared to an Ibanez TS9. Great overdrive that works for Texas Blues(obviously!!) and also great for Rolling Stones or AC/DC Rock tones.
I'm absolutely in love with those things. I'm sure I'll get other pedals, but damn that thing sounds amazing. I just can't get enough. It actually sounds pretty decent with an sd1 as a boost in front of it. Takes away a little of the warmth. I've only had the thing for a couple of weeks. I've tried to make it sound bad. I haven't been able to yet.
I have three that are always being compared, BD-2w, SD-1w and the TS808 re-issue. Honestly they all sound fantastic but different enough to keep switching them out when your mood changes.
The TS is one pedal I've _never_ tried! How much difference is there between the TS-808 and the TS-9? I do have a 1980s Guyatone PS-015, which I think has some similarities, but with almost no dynamics via the guitar's volume control. I also have a Boss BD-2, which is excellent for dynamics, and is "always on". Assuming your amp settings are as shown in the video, I notice that you have the treble fairly low, and the mid a bit higher, from the outset. I have a Fender BDR too, for which I made a paper overlay, sellotaped over the shiny chrome plate, with the writing much clearer, and the other way up so I can read it. And I labelled the inputs "Very Loud", and "Even Louder"!
Hi there Shane, I tried a TS808 last week with my Pro Junior and a Tele . And especially with cords it sounded not very nice. Then I tried a BD2W and it sounded worse. Did I do something wrong or do you think this amp needs an other kind of drive pedal? I play in my house so the volume was not very high.
Great tone Shane. Those pickups look like Joe Barden's? - sound like a stacked humbucker. The shiny blades make me think they aren't hot rails. Great sound regardless. I had a set of bardens back in the day in a Peavey Reactor and the Axcelerator - great sounding pickups. Just curious what those actually are and if current production. Thanks.
Heyyy guess what? Creedence Clearwater Revival is coming to Australia soon! You have to go and see him! And take note of what he plays, guitar/amps and whatnot because I would love to know!
Also in this video (as in the other video where you used the Ibanez TS-9), you forgot to remove the wool blanket from the amp...🙂😉. And also in this video I'll tell you: Boss Sd-1 Waza Craft made in Japan for life!🙂
@@ramencurry6672 Probably? I know I'm right, in that yes, it WILL boost, but its freq band is so narrow it will just muddy up your amp more! Mud frequencies range from ~ 400-800Hz! Your choice of using a GE7 as a boost is much better, & you can TAILOR the frequencies to suit your amp & guitar!

I’m pretty sure the LED light can be repaired. It may be expensive but if the pedal is sentimental it’s probably worth it
I just bought one of these! After many copies, thought it was time to finally try the 'original'. Great video 👍
Digging those rail pups!
The old tube screamer is still going strong!
I don't have one in the arsenal. Yet.
I been using a simulated version of this pedal in bias fx 2. It’s called the 808OD
Only you can make one sound that sweet! You get more amazing every time I hear you!

This one is nasally?
This is the nasally one :)))))
You've never heard my nasals
My Kelley modded 808 is my favorite pedal, I’ve owned so many but have kept it for 20 years. They are so good with single coils
Love that tone - Ibanez- I lot of that tone is in his hands - Nice Boost
La meilleure demo de cette emblématique pedale bravo
Would love to hear the TS808 vs The Boss BD-2 in a demo. I really love the BD-2 but that 808 has some nice character to it

Good to see a pro using garage band ❤
intheblues: The only blues guitar channel with a skull in the background. lol
You leave Bob out of this!
And blue tack!
Great neck pickup solo tone!

I love the Tube Screamer
Great review

Those are the ones yep!
Shane, what pickups are in that Tele?
Joe Barden Danny Gatton pickups.
@@intheblues I thought so. I put a set in my hot rodded Squier Classic Vibe 60's Tele. Nice pickups!
What Tele is that?

3:02 Precisely where my knobs are always at.
Is the mini TS sounds the same ?
No
ts-808 > stevie ray vaughan > fender stratocaster > single coil
SD-1 > Zakk Wylde > Gibson Lespaul > Humberker

You missed the start where I said it was a room sound and not a close mic arrangement for something different.
Using it as a boost is 'wrong'!
You’re probably correct. I have unsuccessfully tried it. Didn’t turn out the way I wanted it. The Boss EQ pedal can work as a boost though
