Hell, im still traumatized about it, and i can still hear the wails of his mother as they held her when she saw him in his casket. She couldn't believe her boy was gone. The reason why swimming in a quarry is so dangerous is because of the water temperatures and depths. the water is very cold and deep and can cause your body to react unfavorably (muscle cramping) and drowning can occur in under two minutes because of these dangers.
I can't breathe if in cold water. I recently started taking cold baths (just cold water from the tap) and I struggle to breathe when I initially get in. It literally takes my breath away.
@@TimothyGibson-n4xsaid by someone who doesn't have a clue, a young man in decent shape can swim 5 minutes. I swim in one and the water is very thin and weird, we had a paddle boat and can only get so close to the dock side instead of rock side it was pushing us 2
As a Boy Scout in the 1970's in Middle Tennessee, I witnessed an accident in a quarry just like this one. We were warned by Cadre NOT to enter the quarry property, but we thought we were wiser than that. One guy jumped in, and immediately struck an unseen object in the water with his leg. We hauled him out and took him back to camp, but he required a bunch of stitches and antibiotics to make things right.
I went scuba diving in a quarry before, and it is INSANELY cold. I had full thermal gear on, head to toes, and after only 20 feet down, it felt like a hammer hit my head with how cold it was.
@@c0der1020 Jumping in can be shockingly cold. My husband briefly went into thermal shock when he dove in without gear. It doesn't take much for a system freeze in water, if that makes sense.
@rihenry7364 I went for cold baths into an old quarry during winter time. The water was freakishly cold indeed. But still that doesn't explain him going under and back up three times. Unless it really is a cramp on his leg(s) that killed him. Which would make sense if he isn't very accustomed to having a cramp in water. I did have a cramp in the sea once or twice, but it was always in my toes, once it was just one side and another time it was both sides simultaneously which did freak me out a bit but thankfully when the first time happened I started thinking of ways to make sure I can get to dry land if it happens again. And best thing to do is ignore the pain from your cramps and keep swimming for dear life with your hands to a place you can grab onto something if there is no dry land to get out to like on beach. But yeah that's a terrible way to go, poor kid just wanted to have some fun. These kind of things should be standard practice in schools, at least the knowledge part of it, I'm not saying they should teach every kid how to avoid drowning in this situation but the knowledge of how dangerous it can be to get into such waters and waters in general. People die out in the ocean, out in the sea, in lakes in rivers. All for different reasons. I know sometimes a knowledge pops up in my head and when I think back to it, it was in my childhood that I learned of it randomly and never thought of it before.
I swam across that lake. With 6 young guys. In the evening. 2009. Waters cold. Head starts to freeze up in the middle of summer. Because of the wind draft. You litterly can’t stay above water. You have to start swimming underwater. When you come out your head feels unbearable. We kept pushing each other to be able to finish the swim. All of us were strong swimmers. But that was the scariest experience in my life.
Me and my buddies were on spring break in south Carolina at his grandparents lake house, we were boozing in the hot tub decided to jump off the dock into the lake I thought I was dead was so cold your body went into shock I can swim but when your muscles seize up it don't matter
I recall a friend in high school who dove headfirst into the lake/quarry and couldn't come up bc she'd hit a submerged log & lost consciousness... she was very lucky to survive and not be paralyzed.
@Sunny-sc6pf When others realized she wasn't coming up on her own, they jumped in and pulled her out. The ambulance was called, and (Thank God 🙏) they came right away. It took some time for her to recover, but considering she was lucky to even be alive... it was a great outcome 🤠👍

Years ago I went swimming in a rock quarry at night with some friends. They tossed me a lifejacket which I didn't fully understand at first. We got in the water walked about 6 ft on a muddy bank, the water felt normal. Suddenly the bottom completely disappeared beneath me like a sharp decline and I could tell it was extremely deep because the temperature dropped to immediately cold. We floated out into the middle with life jackets and looked up at the stars for a bit. I tried to relax and have fun but the entire time I had this creepy, ominous feeling something was waiting down beneath us. Looking back we were stupid to get in that water especially in the dark, but now I understand why my friend gave me a life jacket...

Explanation: quarries can have extreme electrical charges running through them near the bottom so they can be safe to float in but jumping and going to the bottom could end your life!
Why it is dangerous to swim in quarries: 1.) water temperatures: quarries can be very cold which can quickly lead to hypothermia. 2.) depth: they can be very deep but the depth ranges also change dramatically. 3.) unseen hazards: Quarries can contain abandoned machinery, car wrecks, underwater ledges, and sharp rocks.
I'd also add - difficulty in finding a place where you can easily get out of the water onto dry land, as they haven't been designed at all with that in mind
My friend and I could’ve died just like this. We too jumped in a large and deep quarry, because the jumping spots were so popular and thus crowded, my friend and I decided to just swim across the quarry to the side with a dock. If anybody is curious, I’m speaking about the Quarries in Minnesota. Anywho, the water was unbelievably cold as we got closer to the center, we both were being zapped by the cold and we barely had any energy to keep going. I had to keep encouraging my friend and myself so we would make it. We were the only dummies in the middle of the quarry. We did make it out, and we just never talked about it again. I think it really did terrify my friend too.

I'm kind of confused here. I am from Canada and have swam in many quarries. Can't say I've ever seen or heard of any junk in them. What do all you Americans think out of site out of mind and just yall dispose of your junk by tossing it into water and think nothing of it. For the most part magnet fishermen would get sick of getting skunked up here in Canada.
He did die of a leg cramp. This particular quarry is not far from where I live, it has many dangers listed on the site. The last one is sadly ignored. ☆ Cold water: Quarry water can be very cold, especially just below the surface, because it's often fed by underground springs and aquifers. ☆ Debris: The quarry may contain abandoned construction equipment, car wrecks, and other debris. ☆ Unpredictable currents: Quarries can have hidden currents and tunnels. ☆ Steep cliffs: The quarry has steep cliffs. ☆ Trespassing: The quarry is private property and has signs prohibiting trespassing.

When I was a teen we used to jump into a nearby quarry, from all different heights. I never dared swim all the way across. But we would walk to one side which had a dirt cliff, there was a tree branch sticking out of the water at the bottom of where the "path" took you. We would clear this cliff that went out about 20-30 feet with dirt, but to do so we would have to run off path to the left, into small tree branches and leaves, to avoid the tree branch sticking out of the water at the bottom. Someone didn't clear it and it impaled him. Never went back again since. I can't believe I even participated in something so dangerous. But as a teen, you dont really fully understand the severity of the situation sometimes. 😢
My friends and i were kicked out of a rock quarry because when you jump into the water, you can be jumping on top of tree logs and random stuff that can break your legs. Thats what the cops told us
And yet 99.99% of the people who go and swim at quarries never have anything happen to them. Its just like driving a car. Yeah you might crash and die, but we don't ban driving because of it.
Swimming in a quarry is dangerous due to the water temp. The water comes from underground so it's not being warmed by the sun. That kid jumped into that extremely cold water and suddenly his body went into crisis.
I jumped 4 levels high, which is about 12 feet per level. It took me 10 mins to decide, and had to make sure I jumped out at least 4 ft to clear the first level step. The quarry was about a hundred ft deep with a crane at the bottom. The crane was left behind because it struct an underground spring. Workers had to immediately evacuate as the quarry filled with water

I cant think of a swimming hole that doesnt have at least 1 horror story. Never swim alone, always scout the spot you plan to jump, before you jump, and never swim intoxicated. Was taught that and only issue my friends and I have had was someone smacked their head on a bridge doing a back flip off the railing. Luckily survived because we jumped in and saved him.
We use to do that in the gravel pits in HS. You just don't want to be the first to jump (submerged stumps) but if you can swim its not a issue. I think some of these kids don't know how to swim.

That's not exactly it. In quarries the water can be incredibly cold. There's another comment on here that explains all the dangers. She's definitely saving lives by doing this. It's not "just a cramp".
Yea what she said above. ^^^^ there's far more dangerous things to worry about then a few cramps even if u have a leg cramp or any cramp u can still swim with your arms and other leg and or float on your back until that cramp goes away 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

Okay for context, it’s not really the quarry that’s the problem it’s the fact that the water is extremely cold, most wouldn’t notice how cold the water is especially when you jump in. Really cold water is dangerous because your limbs can go dumb and your motor skills become low to none responsive do to shock.
I KNEW THIS A LONG TIME AGO, & HAD TO TELL MY GRAND KIDS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE ONE THEY WAS GOING TO, THEY DIDNT LISTEN UNTIL THEY SEEN A FRIEND DIE FROM IT , THATS SO SAD , I'M SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS MAM !!!
My friend in high school died from jumping into a quarry. I don’t remember the specifics but you never know what’s left in the water. He just never resurfaced. It took the police a little while to find his body. Extremely devastating.
The reason that swimming in quarries can be specifically hazardous is that a quarry will often have a layer of very cold water just below the surface of the warm, swimmable top layer. If you swim down to deeply in a quarry, you can be suddenly exposed to hypothermic temperatures after breaking through the layer of warm water. The sudden shock of cold water can cause heart attacks, hypothermia and death.
I used to swim in one near me when I was a kid & no matter how hot the weather was if you put your head even slightly under the water you would get an instant headache-it was that cold. I see kids climbing over the fence to to it now & it terrifies me!
Ok based on what i found 1. It was private property, he should not have been there And 2. They don't know why he died He just went under and didn't come back up
there was a story about a Quarry where a guy jumped in started too swim and just passed out. 4 people who drove in after him also passed out. all died. it turned out they disturbed a pocket of carbon dioxide gas that displaced all the oxygen at the surface of the water. they suffocated and knocked themselves out with one breath in, then sank under the water .
I had a friend that jumped off a bridge during flooding, he impaled his rectum with a stick off a log that was just under where we could see it. He died under 5 minutes. I was next to jump but I’m sure glad I didn’t. I ran down the edge of the river grabbing him as he was screaming like I’ve never heard before or since. The limb was at least 2’ inside his body and it haunts me still to this day. 1998, RIP Brother😖❤️
I almost drowned, swimming across a quarry. I was in the middle of it and I panicked because you feel like you're swimming in place once u get so far out. Having a panic attack in water is not good. I was yelling and waving but nobody even knew, I was so far out. Thankfully I used a mountain dew bottle floating about 100ft away to focus on, to get my mind back. I was athletic, good swimming and never had anything like that until I tried swimming that distance.
To add some context, they didn’t add the reasoning because there was none, he died because he couldn’t swim since his muscles cramped from being cold, he most likely had a panic attack since its painful and most likely passed out and kept regaining consciousness for a couple seconds at a time, this had nothing to do with the the location, he just couldn’t get out in time
Wait wait wait so you say there is no reason? yet u just posted the reason after u said there was no reason for why he died ??? 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
@@heatherleigh414 apparently you didn’t understand what I said, there was no reason the quarry killed him, it was due to cold water and his muscles and most likely a panic attack, try again

The reason why swimming in a quarry is so dangerous is because of the water temperatures and depths. the water is very cold and deep and can cause your body to react unfavorably (muscle cramping) and drowning can occur in under two minutes because of these dangers.
There can also be old equipment left in them and probably gators in the places where there’s gators
😳
I can't breathe if in cold water. I recently started taking cold baths (just cold water from the tap) and I struggle to breathe when I initially get in. It literally takes my breath away.

I went scuba diving in a quarry before, and it is INSANELY cold. I had full thermal gear on, head to toes, and after only 20 feet down, it felt like a hammer hit my head with how cold it was.
That makes sense, but what does that have to do with swimming at the surface.
I still have no clue why it's dangerous to swim in a quarry.
@@c0der1020 Jumping in can be shockingly cold. My husband briefly went into thermal shock when he dove in without gear. It doesn't take much for a system freeze in water, if that makes sense.
Same. Did my open water certification in a quarry and it was miserable cold.
@Alex-ny1qg damn, I never could swim real good to start with. But now after reading your post I'm scared to death of cramps while swimming

Explanation: quarries can have extreme electrical charges running through them near the bottom so they can be safe to float in but jumping and going to the bottom could end your life!
Why it is dangerous to swim in quarries:
1.) water temperatures: quarries can be very cold which can quickly lead to hypothermia.
2.) depth: they can be very deep but the depth ranges also change dramatically.
3.) unseen hazards: Quarries can contain abandoned machinery, car wrecks, underwater ledges, and sharp rocks.

Swimming in a quarry is dangerous due to the water temp. The water comes from underground so it's not being warmed by the sun. That kid jumped into that extremely cold water and suddenly his body went into crisis.

About 25 years ago, I jumped 60 feet from a cliff near Lake Tahoe, I tweaked my neck pretty good, and I decided that jumping from heights into bodies of water is not too smart !!
I did the same from 85 ft. My neck was immobile for a week. I stopped doing that.
It’s a bubble that’s so strong when u break up also break 😅
I did the exact same from 127ft

200 ft 🤕
How did he die? Could he not swim? Crocodiles? Allugators? Octopus? What dragged him down?
I pray peace for her 🙏🏾 you never get pass a loved ones death, you just learn to live with it.
If you guys ever get tired, swimming float on your back and catch your breath, this simple tip could’ve saved the young man’s life
I was going to say the same thing. You can always flip onto your back and float with little to no effort
@@megxoxo7452it’s saved my life. Not even a strong swimmer… at all.
Swimming anywhere with deep water without lifeguard protection is very dangerous.
We used to have tv public warnings when I was a kid , not trespassing on railways and not swimming in quarries were two of them .
Hydro electric dams also
We use to do that in the gravel pits in HS. You just don't want to be the first to jump (submerged stumps) but if you can swim its not a issue. I think some of these kids don't know how to swim.
A kid at my highschool died this way. It really shook the community because he was a good kid and amazing athlete
You forgot to add he was stupid too. Play stupid games and WIN STUPID PRIZES…
@@MsCheriecoco ok...
@@MsCheriecocotalking about a child like that is crazy.
I'd like to know what caused him to drown. Was it he wasn't a great swimmer or that something medical happened. If you want people to stop doing things you have to be a little more specific.
@@odeefromdawicit’s the anonymity from the internet smh. In “real life” speaking that way about a dead child almost seems psychopathic… or maybe just sociopathic. Maybe that’s their problem, they’re a sociopath
The description of this TH-cam short stated he never made it back after suffering a cramp. The death of this mom's son is a reminder: do NOT swim in quarries! You can suffer cramps at any time, or there could be other hazards in the water!
@@heatherleigh414what if he don’t know how to swim with one leg or just his arms 😭 it’s not the simple lol
Please could you let me know what causes cramps in queries ?
@heatherleigh414 YOU think a leg cramp is no big deal? I gt a cramp in my calf that was so painful I literally could not move my whole body it was so debilitating had I been in water I would have drown. There is nothing as far as I know you can do till the cramp goes away
It lasted at least 5 mins thank God I wasn't in the water..
I'm gonna go swimming 🏊♂️ in the quarry! If I 💀 I 💀!!!!!!
Okay for context, it’s not really the quarry that’s the problem it’s the fact that the water is extremely cold, most wouldn’t notice how cold the water is especially when you jump in. Really cold water is dangerous because your limbs can go dumb and your motor skills become low to none responsive do to shock.
All quarries should have no swimming signs and should also be told in swimming classes
It isn't specifically dangerous to swim in a quarry. The boy got cramps during his swim. But always sheck the depth before leaping.
You pulled this out ur butt he just got tired and drowned
You ever heard of a cold plunge?
Nope.
That's not true.
@@oliflem intimidated by someone more intelligent than you
I used to swim in one near me when I was a kid & no matter how hot the weather was if you put your head even slightly under the water you would get an instant headache-it was that cold. I see kids climbing over the fence to to it now & it terrifies me!
Ok based on what i found
1. It was private property, he should not have been there
And 2. They don't know why he died
He just went under and didn't come back up
RIP Jonathan. Sorry for your loss. Maybe this can save lives❤🙏😥
My heart goes out to you Missus. Sorry for your loss.
there was a story about a Quarry where a guy jumped in started too swim and just passed out. 4 people who drove in after him also passed out. all died. it turned out they disturbed a pocket of carbon dioxide gas that displaced all the oxygen at the surface of the water. they suffocated and knocked themselves out with one breath in, then sank under the water .
😢
Woah 😮😮😮
Omg that is awful. Sounds like a Mr Ballen video.
Yes sometimes there’s toxic chemicals left behind among the many other reasons swimming in a quarry is dangerous
Who would ever expect something g like that to happe!!
Understand your pain and your loss.. lost my son too 😭 my prayers 🙏 goes out to you RIP young man
So sorry for your loss. 🙏
Don’t swim in quarry waters because the water can be extremely deep and alarmingly cold at some spots.
Video did nothing but whet the curiosity.
That's terrible.
Two feet!!?? 😮
Lord have mercy, so very tragic…I’m so very sorry for the loss of your friend.
omg wtf! impaled his rectum?? that's horrible!! 😢😢😢 I pray for you and his family! 😢😢 🙏
That would be a terrible way to go. I'm sorry for your loss
To add some context, they didn’t add the reasoning because there was none, he died because he couldn’t swim since his muscles cramped from being cold, he most likely had a panic attack since its painful and most likely passed out and kept regaining consciousness for a couple seconds at a time, this had nothing to do with the the location, he just couldn’t get out in time
It looked like he had hit a rock, but hard to tell but cramping up from being cold makes sense too
Wait wait wait so you say there is no reason? yet u just posted the reason after u said there was no reason for why he died ??? 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
@@heatherleigh414 apparently you didn’t understand what I said, there was no reason the quarry killed him, it was due to cold water and his muscles and most likely a panic attack, try again
Oh😬😬
If he couldn't swim he wouldn't jump in 😮
Such a tragic story. Please always wear a life jacket. Natural can be so unpredictable 💔
God bless your heart!!! I almost lost my 8yr old son in 2011 to West Nile Virus. They had us call the family in to say goodbye. He was unconscious, yet when i was crying a tear rolled down his cheek. The doctors said if he made it, it was doubtful that he would ever be the same son i once knew.💔 The battle went on for 2.5yrs, but thank the Lord he finally overcame it!!!!❤❤❤ May God watch over you.❤❤❤

What does this have to do with someone dying from swimming in a quarry lake?
