Mariska is very much a natural talent in this performance. Thrust before the vamping audience prepared to make her an heroine, and with no props but the band behind her, she delivers very well from within (without selling out her soul).
When Shocking Blue bloomed around 1970 I was 14/15 years and sooooo in love with Mariska......

I bet he was Mariska’s boyfriend. Both of them were so cute. So sad she passed away about 12 years ago. I was in about eighth grade when I first heard them. Venus hit number 1 in jr high. Mighty Joe was awesome. Had the 45 and the B Side was I’m a Woman. All of their songs were great.

@@budderkupp1282 Where? I've been looking, but have found not one. There was one or two with subtitles, but that was it. In later years she appeared in longer segments of conversation - but with no translation or subtitles a non-Dutch or non-German speaker would not have a clue about what was said. Pity, she seemed very entertaining & interesting. Please share any links you've got - my searches of "Mariska Veres interview English" turned up nothing. ☹
@@danhilbert6727 I will look for it again. She didn't speak English well at all when she first recorded in English. I was very surprised when I found an interview in English..probably in the 80s or 90s. I will try to find it again.

'Venus' was a huge hit, but they couldn't follow up. There should have been a Dutch invasion with CB and the Blizzrds, Earth and Fire and Golden Earring. Golden Earring did the best in America.

This video is taken from an italian TV show called "Speciale Per Voi" (Special for you) hosted by Renzo Arbore who is a very important radio, TV and music personality in Italy. This show was very famous, especially because the people in attendance was allowed to talk freely with the musicians and there was always hard criticism (those were the "protest" days).
I like that they arranged for a translator who spoke Dutch so they could participate, a Flemish woman apparently. Although it's a shame they only ask if they'll be playing more.
This is a TV show broadcasted on the first channel (Rai1) of the "Rai Radiotelevisione italiana". The man whose posed the questions to Mariska Veres is a famous italian musician, composer and show man called Renzo Arbore, founder and front man of the "Orchestra Italiana".

Ferry got it from the original song and recording (of 'The Price of Love') written and recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1965. Shocking Blue just appropriated it nicely.

I'm curious about the majority of Shocking Blue's songs being sung in (very easily understood) English, years before Abba did the same thing, although it was clearly not the native language of either group. Did Robby and Mariska speak fluent English, or did they have to learn the language to enhance their musical careers? Did they also record Dutch-language versions of their songs?
Mariska defenitely did not talk english. she learned everything fonetic. Robbie probably was writing english well, although he made some mistakes. the most famous one is Godness instead of goddess(in the song Venus of course). They never recorded in dutch. only Mariska sang in Dutch before shocking blue and some German after Shocking blue.
Those mistakes are do not matter. It is like some pun (game of words). The sense of songs is not distorted. Even in names of bands there is some pun : Beetles or Beatles, Lead or Led Zeppelin.
