I live in the Pacific NW and am blessed to live about 45 minutes from the Swan Island Dahlia Farm. I have already been out there twice this year and am going again before they close the farm down to dig the tubers. My favorite dahlia this year is midnight moonlight and I have three little green frogs making it home. Love the live chat tonight. 🌸
Southern Illinois. This was my first year growing Dahlias. I purchased a few at a local box store on a whim. I have been so excited and impressed with them. Absolute joy! I’m not sure what kind they are, but I’m definitely putting an order in for specific ones for next season. Thank you all for helping us learn about these magnificent flowers.
Me too. i always thought dahlias were a “difficult’ thing. I bought some like you at a big box store, threw them in a pot..and DANG! Gonna make sure to do it again next year.
Thanks Erin and Kath. I also took the year off from growing dahlias. Last year I enjoyed growing 'Fleur' in a pot. I garden in zone 9b. We had record breaking heat and record breaking drought this summer. (still waiting for rain) Thanks and happy gardening everyone!
Hi Erin and Kath - first time dahlia grower 7b here. Last year I could not make it through your chat because I wasn’t “there” yet but this year, I hung onto every word!! I started with 9 plants in 3 different types to dip my toe in the water and thank the lord - American Dawn made a beiiever of me: Dark stems dark foliage and flowers that turn colors were simply stunning! I have scheduled a tour of an open house dahlia farm tour in Michigan and am already buying bigger and stronger get stakes and planning for 45 plants next year!!
I bought my very first dahlia this year... XXL Cancun. Loved it! It has inspired me to plant more next year and this video has certainly boosted my confidence in planting even more varieties! Love your work Erin! And thanks Kath for sharing your expertise!
I grew 14 varieties this year after dabbling with dahlias the past several seasons. Brown Sugar has been the best overall performer. First to bloom, healthy foliage, vigorous plant, lots of blooms with good form and tight centers. My favorite bloom is probably Bracken Palomino. They are incredible! Thanks to both of you for the fun video.
Live in hot south so haven’t tried dahlias but am always tempted to try when I see your beautiful garden. Thanks for having Kath on your channel. She is extremely knowledgeable. But what I like best is how laid back and humble she is as she gives advice. Would love to tour her garden with her and a glass of cold iced tea.
I missed the live! Darn it, the hubby decided it was a good time to move the camper and start getting it ready for winter and I just forgot about the live!! So glad it was recorded and I can at least watch it now.
Evening. Great video with Kath and you. Our Japanese Beetles have finally left thank god. Very destructive. My Dahliahs did good. However next year I will plant them in much bigger pots. I'm one who has better luck with them in pots than the earth. When in the ground I had terrible bug problems. I water them daily especially with this heat wave in MI. Thank you for all the tips. 🥰👍
Thanks so much Erin and Kath, so informative and inspirational. I have been growing dahlias here in the mountains of western PA, zone 5B for about 10 years. I, like Kath, grow them in rows in my veggie garden. This facilitates what I’m about to tell you, it wouldn’t work in the garden setting Erin has. After two years of losing my entire crop of dahlia tubers over winter storage. I just don’t have a cool enough area to store them, (new house, ugh). I decided i would try to over winter them in the ground and it worked! After a killing frost I cut down all the stems to about 4”. Then I cover them all with about four inches of compost, then another 2” of chopped up leaves. Then I put on the heaviest Agro fabric I can find through Garden Supply (thanks Kath), that’s covered with another few inches of straw and some metal fence posts on the outside edges to hold the fabric in place. I’ve only lost one plant in all these years. I will say that I should have dug them up and separated them two years ago but life has been very busy and I just couldn’t devote the time. Consequently their bloom production has been off for the last few years but he plants are gorgeous. This fall I plan to dig them up and replant much smaller tubers with the same technique and store all their babies in just the way Erin recommends. I’ll let you know whether this works next year. Just wanted to let you know winter ground storage can be done even in Zone 5. I had a neighbor do the same thing and she was thrilled to get similar results.
Belle of Barmera and Islander are my favorites this year. I enjoyed this interactive video. Earwigs were my pain in the b. this year . I am zone 5b in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 Have a great evening 😀
I had both of those last year and they were fantastic! I tried to save the tubers over winter but I had a rat get into the basement and it seems that dahlias tubers are dessert for them.
Im in uk. Our summer has been rubbish but it didnt deter earwigs i used ant powder at the base of each dahlia it significantly reduced the amount of them. Also i used vaseline or petroleum jelly on stems of flowering buds to deter them.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse i had a rat eat my darwin tulips theyl eat anything they even munched on daffodil bulbs which is unbelievable . i live on a river bank so theyre never far from me.
Mildew has been on a couple of my dahlias in the garden this year. A first for me. Never saw mildew on dahlias before. So glad you brought that up during the Live. Thank you.
This was my first yr growing Dahlias. For anyone who's planning to next yr, my advice is prepare for huge stems on some, tie them all to the stake. That's been my downfall, the wind has broken some nice branches off. Next yr I will be using some type of better staking, I saw Monty Don bend what looks like 1/4" pipe around a tree to shape, then bend the ends down, they're really nice. Thinking about using copper, for aging gracefully. I'm on Maryland's eastern shore, it's been so so dry here like never before.
Well - here in Ga - we got your rain. Pretty much has rained here every day for 2.5 months. Worst tomato year ever for me. I disagree tomatoes want moisture- guess it really depends on the variety/ zone. I am 7b - 8. Dahlias, on the other hand are amazing! I only have about 12 plants. I also put them in a veg bed. They got HUGE & contorted & the stems are huge ! Many many flowers!!! I have noticed you don’t always get what you order, though. I will be adding to my collection!!!!
You mentioned that if you're in zone 7 and below you might not have to lift the tubers. What would you use to protect them? I'm zone 7b and this is my first year growing dahlias. They are definitely my divas!
At 56:29 they mention in zone 7 and up that you can leave the tubers in the ground. If there’s going to be a freeze, make sure to heavily mulch to protect them from getting damaged. Drop cardboard on them if you want to be very judicious about keeping them alive.
Labryrinth has been my favorite dahlia for so many years. It’s my go to flower in oil painting because of those twisted petals. Love oil painting dahlias so relaxing. I tried growing dahlias this year but had spider mites so bad had been spraying for past month and half but they kept spreading to my other plants including the desert roses which are my little babies. Those I’ve waited since March to get blooms similar to dahlias. It’s worth the wait. I did notice Japanese beetles did not touch the desert rose blooms. Felt sick today throwing my dahlias away I only had two but they were infested pretty bad. And cleaning all the leaves was driving me insane. Lol. 😊 You both have gorgeous dahlias! Great information tonight! Much appreciated thank you for sharing 💜 I hope next season I can grow some dahlias but keep a better eye on them before it’s too late.
Impaled by hummingbirds LOL!!!! I live in the country, was busy in the garden and I thought I heard something GROWL at me. I slowly turned my head (totally expected to get mauled by a bear or something) and a hummingbird was right near my face. It really sounded like a growl!

Enjoyed the presentation. The new dahlia I got this year from Longfield was Mrytle's Folly. I was recommended by The lady from Flower Hill Farm. She is Flower grower for cut flowers. Boonville N.Y up state. I have been a Swan Island customer for 15 years. Just got back last week from Canby Oregon to see the festival. It was glorious. Had not been there for 10 years. I had many many dahlias when I lived in Oregon. But alas I have limited space my addiction.
Great video. Very informative. This was my first true year of dahlias in my garden. Some still haven’t bloomed but I am thinking they will soon now that the wether has shifted. 🤞 my favorite thus far are Breakout (soooo many blooms!) and HS Date. A few of the ones that I grew from seed are beautiful too!
Very informative video! Although I’ve been gardening for years, this is the first year I have grown Dahlias and I am hooked! I have 9 varieties. So far my favorite is Belle of Barmera. I have already placed my order for next year for 15 more varieties. I do have a question about overwintering the tubers. I live in Missouri, Zone 5b, so I’ll have to dig them up. Is it possible to store the tubers in a small fridge kept around 50 degrees? My basement is heated and will be too warm. I think my garage has too varied of a temp throughout the winter. Any thoughts on this?
I use horse manure on the plots over winter once the dahlias are lifted then throughout the growing season I constantly mulch with grass cuttings. The soil stays moist and apparently fed this way. This is the second year I've grown these amazing flowers and so far so good. I don't know if over the long term this kind of fertilisation will be enough for them. We'll see.
I watched on my tv, so I missed the live chat, but I’m also growing and loving Platinum Blonde this year. It’s in front of a Little Quickfire hydrangea, and its color is gorgeous against the cream/pink/deep rose of the hydrangea.
My favorite this year is a new one to me. Mingus Alex, a deep red/burgundy decorative dahlia with 5 inch blooms. In a vase with cuttings from a Dipped In Wine coleus, Lemon Jade sedum and King Tut grass, it's beautiful.
It’s hot as hell here & they’re flowering like crazy. Last year was drier & hot 🥵.Kath is correct - they started blooming like crazy as it cooled down. Flowers were bigger.
Fave Dahlia this year is a brilliant red dinner plate that came in a variety pack. What are the best sources to order Dahlia tubers from? Thanks, good info!
Thank you for sharing knowledge from both of you! My neighbor gave me three to try for first time this year....learned so many things....especially about staking. My favorite of the three was the Brown Sugar! It is prolific and especially like you said, now that the evenings are getting cooler. I will definitely order small ones to incorporate next year and am looking forward to trying HS Date and and American Dawn.
I didn't see the alert for this video, sorry I missed it live. It's a shame that so many are having problems with dahlias this year, the weather all around has just not been friendly to them. The other thing is that while dahlias are extremely photogenic and been heavily sold/marketed the last few years not all climates can grow them well and Kath nailed the Pacific Northwest as having ideal conditions in summer though they've had their issues with heat/fire this year too.
Hi Erin, As we’re getting closer to digging up our dahlias for the season I’ve been thinking of how to achieve the temperature for storage as my basement is too warm and my garage is too cold. I know this is a whacky question but is it possible to store the tubers in a fridge? I’ve also heard that you can wrap them in Saran Wrap and then store them. What do you think of that? I’m in Michigan zone 6a and it gets very dry here in the winters and the Saran Wrap supposedly helps with that. Thank you!!
Hi Erin, Dahlias make me think of my granma. So this year I am planting a couple Double Jill. Where I live, in Uruguay, we are heading into spring. is it a good time to plant them?
I deadhead my dahlia’s and put them in a vase and set on the patio table for the bees & hummingbird to finish taking the nectar. Agree that American Dawn is a beautiful flower with very strong and long stems, highly recommend.
Tsuki Yori No Shisha has been the best so far in zone 7b NW of Atlanta GA. I’ve struggled with Too much rain rotting some out. Slugs killed some when they first started growing. Also moles have been tunneling around some of them and weakened or killed a few. I have quite a few buds on plants, but they’re kinda sitting still for the most part. It’s going to be cooler now so I think they’ll get going blooming soon!
Perfect answers I’m in Mesa Az when Kath said they need cooler nights , bang the light went off when my dahlia died . I only tried one tuber it got nice and tall with foliage the heat here just took it out ! I wished we had 75-80 degree nights here in the summer hahahahha and I will not grow cactus 😊😊😊😂
I garden in zone 8B. Per Claus Dalbys comments, decided to grow some dahlias in pots. I love that idea, it had never crossed my mind. . Those in the ground do great. But the ones in pots began growth (late and slowly) and then just sat, stunted with no upward growth and no blooms. I think its a soil issue. Do you have tips for what soil to use in pots as a permanent home? I purchased container soil from a landscape company and supplemented it with bagged soil from Home Depot. Thanks. Hope to have better luck in 2022
I think a container mix with some compost in it should be good. I'd avoid the ones that have a ton of peat in them just because it's so hard to keep those properly hydrated. My favorite is Organic Mechanics Container Blend, but I know that's not available everywhere. And remember you'll have to do a bit more fertilizing in a container. Also remember that Claus is apparently magic and can grow everything. :)
I’ve been hand watering my first year growing in raised beds. Any type of drip irrigation seems really overwhelming to figure out how long you leave it on, how many days do you do it etc. I have Powderly mildew on my zinnias specifically from the rain! Wasn’t from me overhead watering. Been using a fungicide and removing the leaves also
Just watching this and I wish I could of watched when it was on. The question I would of asked was I had a lot of new tubers that I didn’t get planted and I am not sure what to do with them now and if they will survive for next year. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I think it will be tough to keep them in storage until next year, but it's too late to plant them now, so either way you're into experimentation stage now and I think it's worth trying to store until next year and see what happens. Just keep a close eye on the moisture with them and don't them get too dry (or too wet).
I accidentally killed ALL but 2 of my Dahlias but 2 this year. Gave too much water in pots when I was going to be gone over a long weekend. Came back to rotted tubers. 😔. The 2 that survived are no where near blooming stage and probably won't make it to bloom stage but I will bring them in for the winter. How do you grow Dahlias from cuttings? Can you do a video on that process?
Erin, I love all your shirts you wear. You pick the most beautiful colors that compliment you. May I ask, what brand name they are? I’d be very interested in looking over the selection they offer.
Eden Brothers mislabled the Lifestyle (or something similar), as a Polka. The Polka was pictured in the catalog as blushing white to pink petals with fuchsia edges. Best wishes to you Erin and Kath! 6b St. Louis, Missouri
Hi! Great video! Question- do you pinch young dahlias and if yes, what does it do? Mine are good size plants, but tiny blooms, it's a joke! Was I supposed to pinch?thank you!
I don't pinch because I'd rather have more flowers than bigger flowers. BUT if you want bigger flowers pinching out the side buds so you only get one flower per stem will definitely help.
Now that you are growing from seed if you grow one you really like you can save the tuber so you'll have it again! (Dahlias don't come true from seed so you never know exactly what you're going to get.)
Gutted i missed last night internet went down. Its been a shocker of a year. Ive never suffered with chlorosis. Im going to do soil sample next year but i tried sequestrated iron its had some effect. I feel the problem is in the bark chippings at base of my dahlia beds causing an imbalance. Anyhow next year theyre all moving to new address under bathroom window in pots. My fave this year has been colour spectacle its been great strong plant/stems medium cactus orange with pink tips its striking.
I just looked up earwigs. We have them in Georgia. I have honestly never seen one. I have stink bugs & the little green worms that defoliate all the mallow plants. Cankerworms
My favorite Dahlia this year ( I am pretty new to Dahlia's) is HS Wink, I love the foliage color, it needs no staking and the pink is beautiful. I would like to know if there is a way to receive my tubers earlier than the standard shipping date? I would like to try starting them early in my basement, but this year I discovered that they didn't even ship them to me until May.
Food grade diatomaceous earth. It was a lifesaver earlier in the season for me as they really wanted my zinnia foliage. I don’t suggest putting it on the blooms themselves but the foliage and eventually it deters them from coming at all.
I fill a quart sized container with soapy water, hold it under the stem the needless on, and tap the stem. It's as if they aim for the water. Got hundreds this way and I'll try applying milky spore granules to the lawn next spring, summer and early fall to cut down the number of beetles.
Great video! I loved seeing your favorites. I will be growing more ball varieties next year. I'm struggling with short stems. Big bushy plants, many huge stalks but short stems. I pinched and maybe over pinched but the stems are nothing like the ones you showed. HELP!
I can’t find my comment to Kath about what I have found for slugs and snails. I’ve had great luck with a product from the UK and I waited forever to get it here to the US. But was well worth it. It’s called Envii, I don’t know this guy or remember how I found it but it’s mixed with water so you don’t have to worry about the pellets swelling etc. It seems counterintuitive to water when things are damp but it works best this way, there is a foliar application mix as well. The coolest thing besides keeping slugs at bay is that this powder had feed in it too. The only downside is that you have to mix by metrics, but we have google so no biggie lol
Can I grow dahlias close to roses? I think both need water and sun, I plan to plantschtet not to close to each other , so when I dig out the dahlias not to disturb the roses. Thank you
I was so excited to grow Crichton Honey this year, and the flowers did not disappoint. Just beautiful. However, they grow on plants that have reached 4 feet tall!?! Not what I signed up for😖
Out of six varieties I grow, Linda’s baby has been the most prolific. Better than the cornels . I was disappointed in Cornel BronZe.I’m hoping now that the nights are cooler I’ll see a richer color. There is a variety called Peaches N cream I want to get next year. And brown sugar!
My main comment in all of this is that... I Never stake my dahlias. With good sun and good water my stems get thick as small tree trunks. Some grow low, some grow tall, but none get staked and they look awesome.
@@TheImpatientGardener I replied to the email they send for order confirmation ans never got a response. I guess I need to get on their website and figure out how to contact them.

Excellent video! Totally Tangerine is a favourite for me.
My favorite dahlia this year is Show & Tell. Hi Erin.
Thank you!!
Disappointed that I missed the “live” conversation, but am glad I could catch this on “replay”!

Hi Erin,
Dahlias make me think of my granma.
That is a wonderful idea!
Delightful conversation. So helpful.
Erin, please do a video when you store your tubers..this newbie wants to save the couple she has!
My first year growing Dahlias I’m in love all done really well had some issues with Japanese beetles
Sweet Nathalie and KA's Rosie Jo are 2 of my favorites this year
Perfect answers I’m in Mesa Az when Kath said they need cooler nights , bang the light went off when my dahlia died .

I took a year off dahlias, they had been miserable in the desert heat. Definitely missed in my garden.
Im in zone 6b have all ready start to order
Hello from zone 9a in O’Neals, CA where it’s been in the 100s (99-109) since Mid-June. And NO RAIN. I’m afraid to grow Dahlias, they might burn up!!😬
Heard the variety... one I loved this year is Castle Drive. What a knockout!
I just ordered one of those the other day. :)
So fun to watch!
I’ve been hand watering my first year growing in raised beds. Any type of drip irrigation seems really overwhelming to figure out how long you leave it on, how many days do you do it etc. I have Powderly mildew on my zinnias specifically from the rain! Wasn’t from me overhead watering. Been using a fungicide and removing the leaves also
Drip irrigation is a little intimidating, but if you get a system that is easy to adjust, you can kind of play around and see what works.
Do you think the ball type dahlias last longer in a vase than the dinner plate ones?
I’m noticing for me that’s definitely the case! My cafe au lait’s won’t last as long as the others even with flower food
In the south, Houston area, I am struggling, hoping in the fall they will bloom!
Would you cut away dry, yellowish, powdery mildew leaves? Any suggestions on what to spray for ants. When I cut mine and I bring the ants in with me.

Loved the video!
I've been growing them from seed.
Being new at it, I don't know the names, but enjoy them anyway.
Thanks!
Now that you are growing from seed if you grow one you really like you can save the tuber so you'll have it again! (Dahlias don't come true from seed so you never know exactly what you're going to get.)

@@jakesuper8253 my most favorite is rose, but because of the Japanese beetles, I haven't planted more in 3 years. Love dahlias too.
Cankerworms
Will buds continue to open after cut ,I haven't had any luck with buds opening 🤔
No, dahlias don’t open more after they are cut so you want to cut them at the stage you want to enjoy them at in the vase.
I am in hot and humid NC. When is the best time for me to start tubers. 7b
I missed this live but great info. And agree the beetles were terrible by me too thus year 👎🏼

They wont ship earlier, I have a greenhouse. BUT if you dig yours up and divide etc. you can try things out on your own with no expense lost.

@@jakesuper8253 for me, so far this year (not all have bloomed yet) is Aluna Clair-Obscur
@@BloominIvy sounds so cool 😎 I would love too see your garden if you don’t mind?
What is best advice for getting rid of Japanese Beetles? I have so many I can't pick them by hand as some have suggested.
HELP!
If you have short stems, when you deadhead cut low (you may have to sacrifice some side buds). New flowers should come on longer stems.
@@TheImpatientGardener thank you
Love this video.
What is the best plant food for cut dahlias?
Our free range turkeys pulled out my dahlias this year!
What is the deep purple dahlia by you to your right?
Thanks for this. I'll look into it!
Can I grow dahlias close to roses?
I think both need water and sun, I plan to plantschtet not to close to each other , so when I dig out the dahlias not to disturb the roses. Thank you
Yes they should do great near each other. You've hit the nail on the head that they want similar conditions.
Thank you very much😀😻
I was so excited to grow Crichton Honey this year, and the flowers did not disappoint. Just beautiful. However, they grow on plants that have reached 4 feet tall!?! Not what I signed up for😖
NE Oregon my American Dawn is much darker. Rusty orange with slight purplish center.
What does a dahlia need if the lower foliage turns yellow around the perimeters of the leaves?
Lower leaves can show issues before others and sometimes you can solve the problem by just removing those leaves so long as it's otherwise healthy.
Can someone recommend a good white ball dahlia?
your japanese beetles are my spanish slugs. they ate 1/3 of my dahlias
So Interesting!
I didn't have any luck with Longfield. I ordered 4 popular dahlias and 3 were not what I ordered. Will not order from them again.
Oh that’s frustrating. Did you let them know?
@@TheImpatientGardener I replied to the email they send for order confirmation ans never got a response. I guess I need to get on their website and figure out how to contact them.
@@TheImpatientGardener BTW... Love your channel, I've watched about 20 episodes in the past 2 days 😂😂😂 (home with covid)
Wel I’m glad you’re watching but I’m sorry to hear why. I hope you feel better very soon.
Can all you dahlia lovers recommend some good online dahlia tuber sellers? The one i used, the tubers were just terrible.
I just re-watched this with 3 windows open - one to catch the names and 2 for sourcing. Hopeless addicts!
