I bartend, know the classics and stuff and went to this speakeasy in Hollywood, just quietly bar hopping already buzzed, so I took one sip of my drink and checked out leaving a good tip when the bartender came at me out of the blue. "Something wrong with your drink?" he yelled sarcastically trying to make a scene out of it in front of other customers, but since he asked I pointed out that I already tipped well and was just leaving but that they're drinks are overpriced garbage. "Yeah? Well, I make the best old fashions in town buddy!!!" was all he could say. There are good speakeasies, but it's become nostalgic for all the wrong reasons by elitist bartenders who usually aren't even great at bartending, let alone speaking to people or selling things.

On the one hand, I’m a show bartender (and bar manager) at an upscale restaurant and I feel attacked by some of this because it’s my job to play this shit up. On the other hand the owner and I clown on the jackoffs that actually style themselves and act like this. That said, sometimes someone asks for a vodka cran and I just have to resist the urge to go “bro, your girl is dressed to the nines and you’re out here in flannels and shorts. Taproom is across the street.”
