the video was helpful, I'm hobby for 4 and this thing of the suspension i never get to see explanation how suspension works, now i have thanks to you a better knowledge of the topic
I agree with your shock set up I run proline prime in the clay compound but before I glued them to the rims I put the foams on the rims and using 120 grit I sanded the Center flat aka let some of the air out of the tires so they sit with full contact
Love the content I have an losi and I can’t keep her straight for nothing no matter how hard I tried I was gonna give up on it but seeing this video made things much more easier for me
I used to drag Mopar's in the 8th and I had heard of some racers running weak shocks on the back to allow the car to squat and get good transfer to the rear! My last drag car was a 1973 340 Dart Swinger and my best 8th mile was low 8's
@@parker1ray that's exactly what I thought would work best in rc as well but it turned out the car rathered a stiffer rear. I guess it slowed down the weight transfer enough that made it more consistent
Hey...like what you're saying about the spring and oil rate. I had a buddy with an AWD Subaru and he was having some issue breaking out of the 11s. She softened his suspension and let it squat in the rear and lift in the front. He cut a full second as soon as he did that. Instead of burning out, it hooked HARD and launched!!!!!! Makes sense with RC too. Just at smaller scale.
Yep! A lot of full scale drag racing translates to the small scale. Some of it is negligible but I like to test and try out a bunch of different things
@@FullThrottleRC well you earned a sub from me for sure.. I love that Kye Kelley makes RC videos for us in secret. 🤣 Thanks, man! My favorite RC channel! Can you do a video on how to get that droop where the front tires go down when you lift please?! I’m having a hard time figuring that out. Thank you!
I think that's the first time I've ever been called Kye Kelley 😂😂 Thank you for the support. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the tires going down when you lift though. My suspension is setup pretty different now, I'd suggest checking out the updated video on my channel. I run my suspension super soft in the front.
I’m running 2k in my rear shocks. With a softer spring. And I get a awesome launch. I love it. 70 weight for me was way to fast I needed to slow it down
I was expecting to see something similar in my slow motion testing video, but it actually seemed like the suspension wasn't even compressing enough, much less too fast.
FullThrottleRC everyone’s cars are different no one is gonna have the same set up. One for one car the other works for a different one.. there is no wrong set up! My old chassis 70 weight in the rear worked fine. But I switched and on this chassis 70 was to light. The car set super loose and not planted now it does! It’s awesome talking to other people and seeing what they do with there set ups
You're the man bro...this is exactly the theory behind my step dad and my father in laws setup up on their real drag cars...I've set up mine very similar but with a but mire droop in the frontbsince it suits my build better...great videos . Liked and subbed already 🤙🤙
Hi, I’ve never heard of No-prep RC drag cars before ... never even heard of RC drag cars but your explanation of suspension set-up all makes sense and was really well done. Now I’m keen on looking further into this sport. Cheers
How do you create the droop in the front and back. How do you adjust the droop? Does the way you create droop cross over to other drag chassis. Thank you for your time. Your content is done very well and informative .
Most of the droop I think you're talking about is from lightweight oil in the shocks and soft springs. You can have less by using a heavier weight oil or stiffer spring or even using the preload adjustment collar on these shocks. There's many different shock options but most of them will all be tuned in a similar way
I have the Losi 22s, waiting for the Traxxas Drag Slash to be delivered. I want a DR10 kit, so I can learn how to assemble and disassemble every part of my R/C cars, without worrying about ruining a $500 investment and not being able to run them while somebody else gets paid to work on my R/C cars. Plus after learning, I’ll have three of the better NP drag cars available. I will definitely be using your tips to get my cars to launch straight, handle great, and win my races. Great video.🤙🏻

And no gyro. Just waiting for my drag race concept slider mount.... All I know is the coil over shocks on my real drag truck are straight up! 8.50 in the 1/4 mile
Thank you for the info, I have a DR10 and having a issue with it going to much to the left when I launch it. Still working trying to get it ready for some test hits
I don't know about RC as I'm new to this but as a long time full size drag racer I can tell you that soft rear stiff front suspension is exactly the opposite of what is done in 1:1 drag racing.
I've since done the exact opposite like you're saying, going stiffer in the rear and softer in the front. I have an updated video on the channel as well of my latest setup
The concept of stiffer rear suspension (higher weight oil) is to slow the transfer of weight. If you can make the process slower. More grip is applied over time of launch. That's the idea of "diff. fluid" in shocks. My rear is 1k and front 2k. And softer on springs
Thanks for the comment! I like to hear others opinions and see what works for other people. The more we can help each other out in the hobby the better! 👍
Thank you! It's a huge learning experience. The one thing I can say is don't get discouraged by seeing some of the insane times and speeds people are posting on social media and not being able to run them. It's easy to stop having fun trying to live up to those expectations
1st question: could you explain you wheelie bar build? 2nd: how did you get the rear wheels straight? What part numbers did you use? I'm building my NPRC from a T5M. Thanks for the info!
I bought a wheelie bar from RC Racing Innovations. When I broke it, I just remade the side plates. I bought a B5M used to make this car so I don't have any part numbers for what's in the rear. I only changed the inserts in the hinge pin retainers though. They come as a set for adjustability.
Just moved up to a 4t drag master an a hobbywing xr10 pro an have the programmer but an lost now car used to make hits now new set up no turbo no boost still just hooking lost where to start was running the 4t dragmaster an a sidewinder 4 non sensored an 37% timing an was 2.7s now can make it down the tract
There's a bunch of things you can check. I'd maybe look at the diff fluid, more power going to the diff it could be too loose now. Other than that I'm not sure where to tell you to start.
An easier way to think of this is the front shocks are trying to push the rear tires down to generate traction and the rear shocks are trying to push the front of the car down.
Man I am SO lost on suspension. 🤦🏼♂️🤣 still a newb lookin for people in my area but I can get her under control driving. Lol need ALL your vids. Hahah
You also have the rear shock adjustment wrong, if your car is pulling left, you add tension to the left not the right. With the wheeliebar, if the car is pulling right, you put the left wheel on the wheelie bar lower
Not really sure what you mean, you can check out the thumbnail and around 4:41 in the video and you will see the orange shock. Associated uses a color coded system for their different shock stiffnesses
Good explanation man is that front end I just can’t see it working properly say the car polls to the right so obviously you stare in the opposite direction to pull it back but with the angles of those front wheels the left wheel wants to dig in which makes sense on a loose surface which is what the chassis was designed for but on straight line runs does this not exacerbate the car wanting to flip because of that front lead will digging in be interesting to hear your thoughts I might be overthinking it👊
I'm not quite sure what angles on the front wheels you are talking about. The car does need to be re-setup soon, but the front wheels are still pretty close to 0 degrees where I set it originally.
@@njbaquatics4827 oh ok, I understand what you mean. The steering is limited which reduces that effect. When moving at those high speeds I don't want or need a lot of steering. The steering travel is set really low on the car.
Rear hub highest has lots to do with traction on an rc car and nobody is talking about it when it comes to traction and also take and trail in the front end has everything to do with how fast your car turns and on a dirt or clay track you need your front end to cut as much as you can deal with but in the world of straight line you want your rake n trail not much more than 5 degrees 95 present of rc cars are designed for off road and bashing so the factory puts the rake and trai at very high angles to combat acting forces on the front wheels to help with rigidity and combat against front lower a-arms brakeage they are laid back at extreme angles so all of these things translate into hard to control cars once any steering input is required and this in one of the main reasons for lots of cars flipping.....just my 2ctz
Never thought about the angle of the front lower arms, that's actually a pretty good catch I think. I'm wondering if something can be designed to straighten these out. It could make for a cool test at least
I haven't tried out a rear motor car yet so it's hard to say. Mid motor adds some weight in front the tires while rear motor leaves that weight behind. It all depends what you want
I made this shock tower extension myself. But if you are interested in printing one yourself you can check it out on cults3d here: cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadget/team-associated-rear-shock-tower-extension
I know this videos a yr old nonetheless, I was curious how much up travel your rear wheels have? if you gently hold prevent the car from. lifting & simply lift your rear wheels how high up do they go? do you have limiters to nearly stop. any up travel or no? Thanks man
Make sure to check out my more recent video on suspension on my channel, my suspension setup has changed a bit since this video. To answer your question though, I have about an inch of upward travel in the rear suspension. I don't have any limiters in the rear at all. Hope that helps
@@FullThrottleRC Thanks man that helps a bunch, I was curious your set up in comparison to mine. Thanks I'll definitely check out your latest vids.. 💯🤙🏽🏁
Ok I've been working on rc cars for 40 years if your prepping your car how is it no prep drag racing ? Do u run what u bring can u not prep the car at the track if u put tire sticking compound r u prepping the car no prep means u r what u bring with out touching it I don't understand please explain
No Prep in drag racing refers to the track. The track gets nothing done to it other than maybe sweeping or blowing the dust off of it. No tire dragger to lay down rubber on the surface, no compound sprayed on the track, and most of the time, no compound on the tires either. Some allow you to use stuff on the tires but it has to be completely dry for the run. So No Prep racing is not referring to the car itself as not being prepped. The car needs to be tuned to get down whatever surface you're running on.
Sorry I'm new and want to get into the rc drag car. What frame do u recommend to start on?? I'm not rich, but please help me with a chassis. I'd love to buy complete if its cheap, but if not I will start from frame up.what do I need??? Thank you man!!!
The perfect starting platform is the Associated DR10. It's pretty inexpensive for what you get and a great beginner car that can be upgraded as you go!
From what I can find online the Losi 22 should have shocks that can be tuned with preload spacers if it doesn't have threaded bodied shocks like you see in this video. You could either use the spacers to adjust preload or replace to some threaded bodied shocks to have a finer adjustment
The wheelie bar was from RC Racing Innovations, check out their site, they have a bunch of different wheelie bars, this was the 7" one. I run a custom wheelie bar now. The shock tower is the standard Associated SC5M tower, I haven't been able to find them recently as most of the SC5M parts are discontinued.
@@FullThrottleRC what wheelie bar set up would you recommend for my losi 22s ? And in your opinion what wide rear tire would you recommend that would hook good on asphalt?
@@JoseRivera-us3qz Check out RC Racing Innovations www.rcracinginnovations.com/ I personally run DE Racing slicks but I've run Proline slicks as well and had good luck with both.
Hi, thanks for the vid, I am setting up an sc5m as well....how many degrees of toe in and anti squat do you run on the rear?...and have you tried the 4 gear transmission?
I have the toe and camber set as close to 0 as possible. I have a video on the channel where I went through the setup of that recently. I do have a 4 gear transmission case but haven't tried putting it in yet
@@FullThrottleRC thanks for the reply, I will check your other vids....I find it interesting you are not running either toe or anti squat..I have seen other vids where another drag racer also said no rear toe in.....a local club member, off road buggies, is a long time team associated factory driver and professionally was with the subaru rally team at one point, working on their suspension setups, I just sent him a message but he has not run r/c drag cars that I know of, will wait and see what he suggests...
Honestly I can't give an honest comparison of the two because I haven't had my hands on either one. I can speak for Associated's parts and chassis designs as I originally ran a SC5M based chassis and now run the DR10M. But I know Losi makes some nice stuff as well. I know that doesn't really answer your question but I know both are good starting cars.
awesome vid thanks for the info. My no prep car just lifts on launch and never even touches the wheelie bar, like the whole chassis just lifts. Any thoughts on that?
Depends what you mean by "lifts". If it's what I'm thinking, you are probably spinning on the launch and the tires are ballooning but that's a complete guess without ever seeing the car run. Try taking a slow motion video of it with a phone. It'll give you a good idea of what's going on
At the time of this video I was running 50wt oil in the front I believe. I've completely rebuilt the suspension on this car and plan on revisiting this video soon.
Shocks are Associated B5M front shocks but I don't think you'll find them any more. The B6 front shocks are the same I believe though. I don't remember what brand wheelie bar this was honestly. I ended up making my own after this video, you can see how I did that on the channel
I've been running a locked diff in my car since I built it. Seen a lot of people have great success with an open diff with super heavy weight oil as well. The best thing I can say is try both and see what feels better for you.
I think it would be a pretty fun challenge. I'd have to find a chassis I would feel like could work and relatively cheap, wouldn't want to spend a bunch of money on an experiment 😄
As of this video, I had 100wt in the front and 30wt in the rear. I've been changing up a few things and testing out some different setups so I might revisit this video soon.
Great vid!

It could make for a cool test at least
thanks for the 411 ! What wheels are on that on-road car? look like 5 spoke aluminum
They are the factory wheels that came with the RMX 2.0. Plastic
Good info sir , thank you so much.
Awesome! Thanks!
My favorite part of the video is when you say "For those of you that don't know squat" 3:22 hahaha
Hahahahaha thanks!
@@FullThrottleRC I've watched this video countless times. Plus a bunch of the others. Long live the SMT10!
I really enjoyed your video....just what I needed ty
Thank You! Glad you Enjoyed👍
What wheelie bar are you using, so the bar wheels on the wheelie bar can be both adjusted hights
The wheelie bar in this video was from RC Racing Innovations. I've since created my own wheelie bar that's easier to adjust.
Great video. Love them all ty for the info
Thank You so much!!
What shocks do you run on that car? Beautiful setup, did you make the direct shock bracket setup yourself?
I run front b5m shocks all around, the shock tower extension is something I 3d printed myself.
@@FullThrottleRC appreciate it, just subbed man, keep it up!
Nice video
Thank you, updated video coming soon!
Thanks! Do you prefer mid motor or rear motor?
I haven't tried out a rear motor car yet so it's hard to say. Mid motor adds some weight in front the tires while rear motor leaves that weight behind. It all depends what you want
@@FullThrottleRC yep, just trying to figure out what I should get for my first car, thanks!
Don't forget you can use swaybar for preload also
Sure can! I try to make sure all of the preload comes from the shocks and not the sway bar though
@@FullThrottleRC yeah sway bars can be used to fine tune for surface conditions when you don't want or have time to do oil.
Great video. Very informative..
Thank You!!
question do i have to put batteries on to setup the suspension
For ride height adjustments absolutely!
Shock tower extension?
I made this shock tower extension myself. But if you are interested in printing one yourself you can check it out on cults3d here:
cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadget/team-associated-rear-shock-tower-extension
very helpful...off topic. where are you from? sound like a little creole
Thanks! South Louisiana
Very helpful video. Thankyou.
Glad the video helped you!
I have the blue losi 22 Camaro 1/10 scale ..these shock do not look adjustable..Do i need to change to the shocks that have the adjustable nut??
From what I can find online the Losi 22 should have shocks that can be tuned with preload spacers if it doesn't have threaded bodied shocks like you see in this video. You could either use the spacers to adjust preload or replace to some threaded bodied shocks to have a finer adjustment
@@FullThrottleRC Thanks! Where can I find, or part # for thread body shocks for Losi 22 Camaro?
Can u please send a link to the shocks u use just got mine and i love it but shocks it comes with are not my cup of tea
Associated part number #91496
What brand and part number is the wheelie bar and what is the part number for the shock tower in the rear?
The wheelie bar was from RC Racing Innovations, check out their site, they have a bunch of different wheelie bars, this was the 7" one. I run a custom wheelie bar now. The shock tower is the standard Associated SC5M tower, I haven't been able to find them recently as most of the SC5M parts are discontinued.
@@FullThrottleRC what wheelie bar set up would you recommend for my losi 22s ? And in your opinion what wide rear tire would you recommend that would hook good on asphalt?
@@JoseRivera-us3qz Check out RC Racing Innovations www.rcracinginnovations.com/
I personally run DE Racing slicks but I've run Proline slicks as well and had good luck with both.
Moving a shock from 45 degrees to upright increases the spring rate by about 50%
At 45 degrees the spring rate is progressive as apposed to direct with upright shocks. I wanted the direct spring rate instead of progressive
What chassis do you have and what brand rear sway bar ? Thanks.
The chassis is an associate sc5m and the sway bar is from associated as well
@@FullThrottleRC Reason I ask I have a B6.2 ? rear on a SCb6 chassis and want to install a sway bar. Looks like Associate kit #asc91736 is the ticket.
Thanks Brow i have the Same Car what Oil do You have
I mentioned the oil viscosity in the video. Thanks
Did u ever post the shock tower file?
Yep, its on cults3d.com, search FTRC
@@FullThrottleRC thanks bro!
Hello what’s a good rtr to buy for my first drag car DR10 or the losi 22s
Honestly I can't give an honest comparison of the two because I haven't had my hands on either one. I can speak for Associated's parts and chassis designs as I originally ran a SC5M based chassis and now run the DR10M. But I know Losi makes some nice stuff as well. I know that doesn't really answer your question but I know both are good starting cars.
@@FullThrottleRC ok cool thank you so much keep doing the great videos
awesome vid thanks for the info.
It'll give you a good idea of what's going on
@@FullThrottleRC that's exactly what's happening. Tires are ballooning and lifting the car. To much power?
@@PlatinumToyz and not enough traction
Which oil do you have in the front
At the time of this video I was running 50wt oil in the front I believe. I've completely rebuilt the suspension on this car and plan on revisiting this video soon.
Hey man which shocks are you running if ya don't me asking
Associated B5M front shocks
Link to the wheelie bar and shocks?
Shocks are Associated B5M front shocks but I don't think you'll find them any more. The B6 front shocks are the same I believe though. I don't remember what brand wheelie bar this was honestly. I ended up making my own after this video, you can see how I did that on the channel
Good stuff, thanks! 👍
Appreciate it!
What do you think about a locked diff on the dr10?
I've been running a locked diff in my car since I built it. Seen a lot of people have great success with an open diff with super heavy weight oil as well. The best thing I can say is try both and see what feels better for you.
Thank you so much
What diff fluid do you recommend for the dr10?
Something heavy. Probably start around 500k
Whats shocks are these your running
Associated b5m fronts
Would u ever build a fwd no prep car
I think it would be a pretty fun challenge. I'd have to find a chassis I would feel like could work and relatively cheap, wouldn't want to spend a bunch of money on an experiment 😄
Which RC drag racing class allows awd set-ups,
Pretty sure there's an unlimited or "anything goes" type of class in most clubs. Bring what you have to a local race and see what class it fits in.
@@FullThrottleRC Thanks sir
What weght oil in the front and back do you run with
As of this video, I had 100wt in the front and 30wt in the rear. I've been changing up a few things and testing out some different setups so I might revisit this video soon.
What kind of chocks are those ?
Associated B5M Front shocks
