Learned what you're talking about exactly with my fuel tank crossover tube. Took it to a Honda repair shop that said they thought it would be cool to work on a Corvette. Ended up taking it back three times and every time I got the car back it's still wreaked of gasoline. After the third try, I was told by the owner that he didn't want me to bring the car back. After threading him with an attorney, he agreed to refund the labor costs that he had charged me for, but I still had to pay for a fuel pump , crossover tube parts. Took the car to Primising motors in Lebanon, Oregon. A Chevy dealer and he fixed it right the first time and gave me a lifetime warranty. It's like you say it's worth paying a few extra bucks to find a certified technician and having the job done right the first time.

Who in their right mind takes a Corvette to a Honda repair shop? That's like going to an optometrist for a foot fungus.

I learned long ago that with old cars, it is not about the money that is important, since nothing is going to be noticeably cheap anyway,, it is who is doing the work that is important. It took me a long time to find a dedicated corvette garage, after failing to find satisfaction testing likely local garages with small fettering repairs that my newly purchased used car needed. had I known more about corvettes at the time, I wouldn't have bothered with non corvette shops.

Lyle you are so right. I work in a dealership and where we are at we get a fair number Vettes. Especially in the spring when people are taking them out of storage. Recently we have had a couple of C7s come in with torque tubes out of them. After further investigation on both of these cars it was discovered the torque tubes had already been replaced before. One was replaced 10000 miles prior and another about 8000 miles prior. When we got them apart the reason the torque tubes failed is because the neutralization procedure was not done on the prop shaft hub clamp when it was installed. In these cases due to the forward load that was being put on the end of the crankshaft both vehicles had wiped out crankshaft thrust mains on the engines. So, not only did the torque tubes have to be repaired but the engines had to be repaired. One of the customers had us take the engine apart. We had to replace it because the thrust main was so worn that it started to destroy the block. He currently is in litigation with the shop that repaired it prior. The other customer just had us replace the torque tube and he is currently in litigation with the prior shop to get a new engine. Everybody, heed what Lyle shared here. Make sure you are taking your dream machine to a good reputable experienced shop. Really good video Lyle.

Had a well known transmission shop work on my C4 back in 2005. Had the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission. They rebuilt it just fine but must have lost the clutch fork rod. Rather than get a new one, they welded two door stops, the kind that screws into your baseboard and used that instead....Needless to say the clutch word out quickly and it was my regular mechanic that showed me.

I once took my c4 to a shop that said they work on vettes here in Orlando Fl, to check on an engine tap condition. Their vette guy turned car on heard the noise for a second and said it was bottom end and I needed a new engine. Quoted me like $12k for a jasper engine.
I had left the house forgetting to tighten my roof panel and asked him if he could tighten and he told me bolts werent in there. Got home and tightened it myself, bolts were in there he couldnt see them. Called a true corvette shop who no longer works on c4s and only c5 and up and they said get a second opinion, 'those engines almost never break.' Finally found someone who was willing to work on it and he found it was a bad lifter that was making contact and had pitted. Replaced all and has been good to go over a year now.
Oh, also took it to a "chevy" guy who said 'nah, all chevy engines ping like that just leave it, it will come back if you try and fix it.' If you heard that ping you'd think someome was taking a hammer to the side of your engine. Where do they get these guys...I need C&S in Orlando... 😅

Even certifed GM Corvette Mechanics screw up, and some GM dealerships fail to tell owners about safety recalls which pop up on their service terminals when they enter your cars Vin number, and found we found out about in 2017, about an outstanding (seatbelts retractor safety recall for both passenger and driver side seatbelts( 91C25 &91C26) which is the recall campaign number. Also the dealership that installed the replacemts , failed to apply the Campaign recall stickers to the radiator shroud when they put a red and a blue seatbelts in our red interior colored vette, to cover this recall and were still not happy about it! Also in 2022, the one they installed on driver side belt seized up ,and is defective aswell. So now, GM and the Dealership does not want to provide aftermarket seatbelts, even though in the US ,GM prurchased and installed aftermarket ones for other C4 vette owners.Which we discovered on NHTSA website ,but for some reason here in Canada they will not! Also by law and the recall act, they exceeded what is deemed reasonable, which is a 60 day written and mailed recall notice to the owner. As of today that recalll notice is well over that ,and now 34 years late and still has has not arrived! Also the GM dealership that installed the rreplaced belts should of also placed , one sticker on the driver side and one on the passenger side of the shroud, but the GM dealership never did. In the GM certified corvette recall repair manual for this recall, they are required to stick the stickers on and write the campaign recall number on! all in all it's GMs fault and and the #1 dealership in Vancouver also never told us about it either, and thought they were the best but after finding out about 27 years later, is truly an outstanding and were not pleased about it.Also, there are other C4 Corvette owners that never recieved the written recall ,and also never been advised by the dealership either and is for the model years 1984 -1991,and seatbbelts are a major safety concern.

Loved the article on the torque tub rebuild! We have 134,000 on our 2007 AT C6, so I'm concerned when we should consider to replace all the seals and bearings on the Torque tube? As I would prefer to be pro active instead of waiting for it to fail!
Case in point, the C6 shift cable. Removed it and it was cracked in numerous places, so it was just a matter of time before it wouldn't shift! ~ $87 plus shipping and the problem was resolved! Thank you Lyle!!

Had the AC system replacement replaced after a catastrophic AC Compressor failure. The steering rack began to make a small clunk after the repair. The steering rack did not previously make any noise or clunks. The steering rack has to be removed to complete this job.
It is 6 months later and the clunk is noticeably louder and concerning.
    Is the shop responsible?

Hey man don't give up hope. I got burned by two shops who claimed to have corvette experience. Had aC5 and C7's in the yard. Issue was I have a C4. OBD1 They drug their feet until I pull my car out still not repaired. Second shop said we can fix that. I own 2 C4s and restored and sold them. Month goes by I'm calling or coming by, and still not even touched! Got a labor bill for? Third shop was local and said 1 hour to diagnose and we'll call you. 20 min.'s later I get a call and it was a broken vacuum connector. The other 2 shops couldn't have bothered to check. The 3rd shop fount 4 items that I paid for at the other shops in just an inspection of work I told them was performed. They went over the car with me and were upfront and honest. I have no corvette shops within 150 miles of me. Can't drive a broken car or pay through the nose for towing. Then wait 4 months till they can even check my car. Thing is don't give up! Lyle at C/S corvette has always been a great source of info. GOOD LUCK that shop is out there.
