    Oh my goodness! Annie - I've been trying to learn Vietnamese for many, many years. I am hearing this for the first time! Thank you for giving attention to the basics.

    I'm glad I wasn't sipping my coffee when you said "banana on top" 😂. But anyway, thanks. This really clarified the meaning of the banana 🍌

    Annie you are always good for a laugh regardless if it’s a dog barking over your slang video and now waving a banana around. Keep up the good work

    This makes so much sense!!! I’m Vietnamese but officially studying for about 1.5 years and I finally understand this. I think I was just taking a lucky guess this whole time 😂

    Please, explain to me. Why the "cuộc" is written with "c" not "q" like in "Quốc"

    • @harveylam4294
      @harveylam4294 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In southern Vietnamese, these are two different syllable structures. This is similar to the distinction between "cúi" /kuj/ and "quý" /(k)wi/, where the letter serves as both a vowel and a semivowel.
      "cuộc" phonetically is /kuək/, so it has the same centering diphthong as "cua" and "rùa". "quốc" treats as /kw/, so we read it as /(k)wək/, rhyming with "rất" and "mất". In northern Vietnamese, however, "cuốc" and "quốc" tend to be homophonous.

    I used to call ă "a with a bowl on top", but from now on I'll definitely go bananas.
    (I think the official name is breve, but the fruity nickname is ngon hơn).
