This is a Patreon-exclusive video from March of 2020, and considering the occasion, (Friday the 13th-- and in August, as we prepare to welcome our favorite time of year), I decided to ask my Patreon supporters if they'd like to make this video public. The response was overwhelmingly positive, a unanimous "yes!" So, on behalf of the Night Mind Patreon, have this exclusive Local 58 video! Be sure to thank the Creatures of the Night for this one! (And please forgive the audio quality, it was one of the last videos I made with my old microphone.)
Oh what the fuck. I just assumed it was alluding to the idea that the spirit of the nation would carry on into the afterlife. Inherently ethereal, not a place.
"You are on the fastest available route" is one of the few, if not only, pieces of horror that genuinely gave me chills and goosebumps. The idea to use something that's embedded in everyday life (phones/laptops have already been way overused), and turn it into something like an angler lure, pulling you towards a monster and only realizing partway through, is really smart, and the fact that we've been shown in the past that something like that is pretty feasible only adds to the fear factor. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.
As someone who relies heavily on GPS because of a horrible sense of direction, I can feel the terror. I've had times where my GPS seemed to go haywire and gave impossible or weird directions, and it's scary.
Contingency is the one that gave me the chills. I used to stay up to watch the test pattern every night when I was a kid, to the point where my mom taped the station sign off and test pattern. I was a weird kid. But an unexpected intrusion on that peace for a weirdo like me would have been traumatizing.
OH NOOOOOOOO!!! I have two girlfriends, but very few people on YT are happy for my relationship success. They disl*ke all of the videos I make with my 2 girlfriends. Please be kind, dear ta
Something interesting about Contingency is that the video instructs the viewers to perform the Victory Position (Feet Together, FRONT LAWN, FACE UP) at 3:00 in the morning. Even if the video wasn’t initially made for this purpose, it seems like whoever broadcast it wanted people to go outside and face the night sky, where the moon would be waiting for them.
Exactly. The moon WANTS us to die. One theory is that the weird larva thing in the grave during the Cadaver cartoon is a baby version of whatever the monster from "you are on the fastest route" is, and they feed on human corpses. The odd structures from Sky watching are where the creatures come from. So that broadcast from "the 51st state", aka the moon, was meant to trick people into offering themselves up to the entities.
I was here the whole time thinking "isn't this a re-upload? I swear he did this already" and that's how I realized Night Mind and Nexpo are not the same guy.
Interesting that you glossed over contingency". I grew up in the 60's, having to duck and cover at school during the day ... I would never stay up to watch the end of broadcast messages done by all channels at the end of their broadcast day for fear of this very type of video ending. This madness had so much more impact to us folks of my age group giving this a very high creep factor! At the time, I wouldn't have been surprised that the TV told us to off ourselves!
Contingency is my favorite out of all of Local 58s videos. Your perspective as someone who lived in the 60s is really interesting to think about, given the state of the world then, fear of actual announcements on television (not calling for mass suicide of course...) and having to practice duck and cover like you said. I honestly hadn't stopped to consider that watching from that point of view, as a millennial who was a child in a different era of American war and relations with other countries with different technology we would get these kinds of warnings on. For me I guess it was kind of a creepy historical film but for you I guess it would be a lot more nostalgic and I find that comparison really awesome to think of so thank you so much for bringing up this point!!

Kudos to anyone and everyone who helped make “you are on the fastest available route”. I don’t know if they used a TTS or had an actual voice actor come in and do it but either way, damn, they really pulled that off!

Local 58 in my mind will always be the king of analog horror on TH-cam, with its amazing detail and world building it really could be made into it’s own movie or show.
in the short "Contingency" time stamp 7:51 that's Lyndon B. Johnson's signature. this explains many of the details. this video was made if the US lost the Vietnam War. The expiration date on the video, that is the tail end of Lyndon's presidency. the 51st State is in refenced to the Moon during the space program Update 6/26/22: Sorry I forgot my history lessons everyone. my readjusted theory is "if communisms took over the world then this tape would be played"
“You Are On The Fastest Available Route” reminds me of the opening to the Doctor Who episode “The Sontaran Stratagem”. The same basic concept - SatNav (or GPS) being taken over - but it takes it farther, as the car doors automatically lock, and the car drives itself into a river. This was in 2008, before the rise of self-driving cars, and that scene stuck with me for ages. I thought it was an amazing and terrifying concept, so seeing it used for a full horror video, not just the opening to a sci-fi show, was brilliant.
The towns and cities mentioned *do* exist... in other stories by Kris Straub, who has been much more prolific than you paint him as in this video by saying he made "Local 58 and Candle Cove". He also created Broodhollow and Ichor Falls (both of which feature the town of Ichor Falls), Checkerboard Nightmare, Starslip, and co-created a series or two with Scott Kurtz, among other things.
And if you're a D&D fan, he's also been a major member of Aquisitions Incorporated for a few years now, doing most of the art/animations and playing in the 'C-Team' campaign.
Naturally! He's very much accomplished. This video just aimed to shoot straight for coverage of Local 58 and started with a touch of familiarizing for viewers to recognize Kris Straub by some of the more easily known works. As it was originally a Patreon video, I let my fur down a little and just got right into it. ::3
I'd like to point out that the song playing in the early section in the cartoon in "Show for Children" sounds like it could be a rendition of "Shine On Harvest Moon."
I always interpreted it as "the 51st state is not a place" to be saying that the final united state is a state of death, state of euphoria, etc; a state of being
I always like contingency because It felt like an alternate history scenario. The USSR finally touches US soil. After a horrible slog through Canada, you finally are within your goal. About to return home. Despite your expectations that there would be large amounts of resistance from American troops... There's nothing. At first you think you got them by surprise. Until you see the town up ahead has all its lights out. There's no one here. They all died before you took your first step inland. Gobaly it's seen as the biggest national tragedy, surpassing the war its self.
It reminds one of the whole Masada thing; The Maccabean Jews hold out against a Roman siege for two years, then when the Legions break through everyone is dead by their own hand. Too bad that didn't really happen; many of the hardline Maccabees killed themselves, but the whole town did not kill themselves; it's been theorized the idea was promulgated in Rome to undermine the political and military ;leaders of the time. Tacitus I think records interviewing two slaves taken from Masada, even.
It's precisely what makes Contingency so terrifying to me. I feel like many Americans are mistakenly raised to believe that America is invincible, or at least given that impression as they grow up. Contingency absolutely destroys that notion.
It's scary that you can step outside your house, looking around your neighborhood as people start stumbling out of their houses, covered in blood that isnt theirs before they either shoot themselves in the heads, slit their own throats, whatever they can. You just stand there as crying and gunshots start echoing throughout the neighborhood until it's you left, until it's your turn to do your part. Fucking terrifying
Thanks for the birthday gift Night Mind! 28 years ago I was born Friday August 13th 1993. Since learning I was born on a date many claimed cursed or unlucky I've had a strong fascination of the cryptic and horror, glad to have channels like you around to help me find new content to view and give your thoughts and views on them and a place for all of us to discuss them.
5:40 during my first visits to Yosemite and Joshua Tree parks, there were signs all over the visitors' centers reading "Don't trust your GPS!" Apparently people were doing things like driving off the edge of cliffs...
I've watched local58 a few times, it becomes more scary with each re-watch. Like parts fall into place that you missed the first time. The very first time I watched it, I was curious, confused and a bit creeped out but after a few rewatches, the bigger story is emerging and makes local58 even more engaging and unnerving.
The contingency plan one really gets to me. I couldn't say why, and most of this kind of content I find enjoyable rather than unsettling...but that one bothers me.
Truth is Knowing the US governemnt I wouldn't be shocked if they had something like it in reality Then again the US is much like Israel, They'd rather have the entire world burn in nuclear hellfire then lose
@@commisaryarreck3974 Don't kid yourself. Every sufficiently powerful government would rather everyone lose than just them. Mutually assured destruction is not just the UD and Israel.
Weather Service is honestly my favorite of the bunch. Both because it's the first one I saw and a lot of the little back-and-forth details you pick up on it. Like how the first alert has bustling sounds that are clearly the background noise of a TV studio trying to get the alert out, to the utter stillness of the final message as everyone has been taken. And that last line of "IF YOU ARE AFRAID, WE WILL LOOK TOGETHER" has always sent a chill down my spine. Something about how it's such a discordantly supportive statement in such a terrifying situation just makes it all the creepier. "It's alright to give in. You are not alone."
Thanks Patreons! Cool of you to share. Anyways Local58 is legendary. Contingency remains some of the most effective use of text in a horror video I've ever seen. It's entirely your mind being led to conduct it's own horror through a relatively realistic scenario and it never fails to get to me big time.
for sure, i just watched the entire series so far last week and was very surprised that it hadn't been covered by night mind or nexpo. seems right up their alley!
Yeah it looks really good, has a kind of System Shock feel to the series - making a game as side content is awesome as well, something I've not seen since Catghost.
27:42 so... CRT monitors worked by scanning an electron beam (the 'ray' from a cathode) across a photosensitive screen, with different beams creating different colors A typical CRT monitor had three beams - one for red, one for green, one for blue. My guess is that the 'Pentathode Assembly' is a CRT assembly intended to use _five_ electron beams, implying the integration of colors the human eye cannot see (perhaps infrared and ultraviolet, or perhaps something more supernatural) into televisions or other such monitors made with the device

local 58 is easily one of the scariest horror pieces of recent. it really hits me right where it hurts, straight from my nightmares. but i love it so much
I've watched and rewatched Local 58 a couple of times, but the "in 300 feet, turn off your headlights" still fills me with a kind of joy that comes with delightful horror
I think Contingency is my favorite of these. It’s so eerie because it seems like something the government would actually have wanted to have happen during the height of the Cold War, while still being far enough removed for reality that it’s unsettling. “Infants and pets are the smallest patriots” still haunts me.
I absolutely love your ability to make symbolic connections in storytelling, and your explanation of how you have discovered these. There are those of us that crave storytelling that's hidden in subtle clues and puzzles and stimulates us on the deep inside where we lose our sense of self for a time.
My favorite Local 58 video will always be "You Are On The Fastest Route Available". There's something so unnerving and creepy about the way the video is executed in concept and everything else as a whole.
I really appreciate Local 58 for arguably causing such a huge wave of “Found Footage” series, including Gemini Home Entertainment and the Walten Files (along with many others!). The crustiness of VHS tapes is something that I’ve always enjoyed, and I really like seeing how creative people can get with the little stuff that they have.
I originally watched this series at 3:00 am alone and the whole time my hands were covering my eyes so I ended up having no clue what the fuck was going on. Finally, I actually know what I was supposed watching lmao. on another note, this gives me the mfing chilllss. you never know what's next and it really keeps you on the edge of your seat.
What the hell that looked like the road to my friend’s summer house at night. He’d purposely stop the car just to turn the light off in the middle of the woods to scare the crap out of us after explaining what Sirenhead was.
The hoax explanation is specifically attributed to local 58, and I doubt the government would send out personalized tapes to every local channel in the country, so maybe the American dignity thing wasn't actually meant to be broadcast to the entire country?
Thank you Patreon subs!! We love all of you! I love Nick so much & so does my almost 12 year old! Local 58 is something we talk about all the time!! So, this definitely is a great video to share with us! 🖤🖤🖤
I always really loved that new stargazing one. It's pretty freaky, and it's extremely unnerving in complete silence, just some hobbyist with a TV feed. And the artwork has a big "Darkwood" feel to it, with the fleshy, bumpy surface.
I really liked the little skeleton character so I looked up the artist that made him, kris straub. I though the creator of the arg just borrowed the character from him, nope, same guy. And also he apparently made candle cove as well, major art props to kris, cool guy
fun fact: there is actually a local58 easter egg in the candle cove creepypasta (someone said they saw the candle cove show on the "local58" tv channel)
Not sure if anyone had an opportunity to check Local 58 recently, but there are some updates. The latest update from last year or so of an presumed live feed from a NASA-esque organization observing a comet; I’ll leave it at that. The very latest vid was from a few days ago and it seems there’s going to be a “Season 3” I can’t wait to see what the new season brings; the first offering was freaky
It’s so cool seeing this take place in West Virginia. I use to live there and I love seeing creepy stuff involving it, considering the number of paranormal/spooky stories. :D
If you haven't heard of it, I highly recommend Old Gods of Appalachia, its a horror anthology podcast taking place in that region and its absolutely incredible.
I got chills from the series. "You are on the fastest available route" is one of the first internet horror videos i introduce to people and "contingency" sent shivers down me because it is such a good example of analog horror.
I would like to mention that Ichor Falls is the name of a ghost town in a story Straub made, and that Cadavre is a character from Broodhollow, another Straub creation. Local 58 is inherently connected to all of Straub’s other horror works and I think thats lovely.

Update 6/26/22: Sorry I forgot my history lessons everyone. my readjusted theory is "if communisms took over the world then this tape would be played"
But the US did lose the Vietnam War though
More like if the US was successfully invaded by ground forces of the Soviet Union or China.
If?
“You Are On The Fastest Available Route” reminds me of the opening to the Doctor Who episode “The Sontaran Stratagem”. The same basic concept - SatNav (or GPS) being taken over - but it takes it farther, as the car doors automatically lock, and the car drives itself into a river. This was in 2008, before the rise of self-driving cars, and that scene stuck with me for ages. I thought it was an amazing and terrifying concept, so seeing it used for a full horror video, not just the opening to a sci-fi show, was brilliant.
Glad im not the ony doctor who fan who thought abt this
God I remember that episode
The towns and cities mentioned *do* exist... in other stories by Kris Straub, who has been much more prolific than you paint him as in this video by saying he made "Local 58 and Candle Cove". He also created Broodhollow and Ichor Falls (both of which feature the town of Ichor Falls), Checkerboard Nightmare, Starslip, and co-created a series or two with Scott Kurtz, among other things.
And if you're a D&D fan, he's also been a major member of Aquisitions Incorporated for a few years now, doing most of the art/animations and playing in the 'C-Team' campaign.
He mentions both Broodhollow and Ichor Falls, though.
Naturally! He's very much accomplished. This video just aimed to shoot straight for coverage of Local 58 and started with a touch of familiarizing for viewers to recognize Kris Straub by some of the more easily known works. As it was originally a Patreon video, I let my fur down a little and just got right into it. ::3
Why is this comment so bitchy lol
@@NightMind
There's also the fact that in the Candle Cove creepypasta the channel that is said to have broadcasted the show was called "channel 58"
No matter how many videos I watch about local 58 I will always watch another video about local 58
I'd like to point out that the song playing in the early section in the cartoon in "Show for Children" sounds like it could be a rendition of "Shine On Harvest Moon."
You’re totally right. That’s a great detail to point out.
Local 58 and Ben Drowned part 2 are probably Nightminds most requested videos
Glad he's doing 58
I mean, this is an old video.
I was born on the anniversary of the titanic sinking, but you can say you have a horror film series based on your birthday
Just a reminder to *NOT* do the "there are no faces" exercise before sleep, it *WILL* mess you up, did it a while ago and woke up with my heart racing
Looks like I won't be sleeping tonight, then
What scares me the most is that I do believe that there are no faces.
Read this mid day and fuckin pissed my pants.
@@anib8863 they're nuclear bomb mushroom clouds that have been altered a bit
@@LordSluggo Aren't they just taken from that paper on flashed face effect?
For me, it's the warbled national anthem that really seals the deal. And poor little cadavre.
@@JK-gm6kk yeah, the distorted anthem is definitely a nice touch as far as making it unsettling.
Truth is
Knowing the US governemnt
I wouldn't be shocked if they had something like it in reality
Then again the US is much like Israel, They'd rather have the entire world burn in nuclear hellfire then lose
@@commisaryarreck3974 Don't kid yourself. Every sufficiently powerful government would rather everyone lose than just them. Mutually assured destruction is not just the UD and Israel.
for me because it reminded me of Jonestown - so in theory it's something that could happen, because it already has somewhere else
One thing we can all agree on - Kris Straub is a horror genius.
Really looking forward to the inevitable Gemini home entertainment video
Me too! GHE is in a lot of ways even better than Local 58 and is an active, ongoing series. Hope NM covers it someday.
for sure, i just watched the entire series so far last week and was very surprised that it hadn't been covered by night mind or nexpo. seems right up their alley!
Yeah it looks really good, has a kind of System Shock feel to the series - making a game as side content is awesome as well, something I've not seen since Catghost.
@@greenhowie Right? Having an actual playable game is next level.
“This message will repeat until there are none left to read it”
6 years later and I still get cold reading it.
27:42 so... CRT monitors worked by scanning an electron beam (the 'ray' from a cathode) across a photosensitive screen, with different beams creating different colors
A typical CRT monitor had three beams - one for red, one for green, one for blue.
My guess is that the 'Pentathode Assembly' is a CRT assembly intended to use _five_ electron beams, implying the integration of colors the human eye cannot see (perhaps infrared and ultraviolet, or perhaps something more supernatural) into televisions or other such monitors made with the device
Yeah, those other two beams are probably for subliminal messaging.
wow! and that plan was for the 30s! imagine what they would have had in the series now! or hell in real life!
When Night Mind uploads, it’s going to be a good day/night.

local 58 is easily one of the scariest horror pieces of recent. it really hits me right where it hurts, straight from my nightmares. but i love it so much
Thank you for the patreons that voted to make this public! Truly a joy to watch.
I've watched and rewatched Local 58 a couple of times, but the "in 300 feet, turn off your headlights" still fills me with a kind of joy that comes with delightful horror
That "deep" meme made this 100000% better LOL
I think Contingency is my favorite of these. It’s so eerie because it seems like something the government would actually have wanted to have happen during the height of the Cold War, while still being far enough removed for reality that it’s unsettling. “Infants and pets are the smallest patriots” still haunts me.
thank you night mind, and thank you night mind patrons!!! local58 is one of my personal favorites, can’t wait to watch this!!!!
15:47 The bit that bothers me, weirdly, is how the moon now passes in front of the tree, not behind it like it should.
See "Skywatching" for why the Moon is doing that.
its really weird that the GPS decided to go "duck it. im gonna kill this dude" and, in fact, killed this dude
Ah Local 58 - or as i call it "POV Of A Necromorph Brethren Moon Arriving At Earth"
I absolutely love your ability to make symbolic connections in storytelling, and your explanation of how you have discovered these.
There are those of us that crave storytelling that's hidden in subtle clues and puzzles and stimulates us on the deep inside where we lose our sense of self for a time.
I love the complete nonchalant attitude of "yeah, definitely a monster" xD absolutely broke me
The guy in “Fastest Available Route” didn’t use turn signals initially. That’s the real horror.
My favorite Local 58 video will always be "You Are On The Fastest Route Available".
There's something so unnerving and creepy about the way the video is executed in concept and everything else as a whole.
Local 58 is absolute fire and so are you.
I really appreciate Local 58 for arguably causing such a huge wave of “Found Footage” series, including Gemini Home Entertainment and the Walten Files (along with many others!). The crustiness of VHS tapes is something that I’ve always enjoyed, and I really like seeing how creative people can get with the little stuff that they have.
maybe it wasn't a good idea to watch this at 10 pm lol. i'm feeling too spooked to sleep now.
Yes! This is a topic I've been hoping you'd shine a light on soon enough
I thought the noti for this vid was from THE Local58 channel and I gasped so hard I almost choked
What the hell that looked like the road to my friend’s summer house at night. He’d purposely stop the car just to turn the light off in the middle of the woods to scare the crap out of us after explaining what Sirenhead was.
What a coincidence. I rewatched Local 58 recently and found myself wishing for Night Mind's interpretation of it, and here it is!

This is one of my favourite series! So glad to see you cover it
Just wanted to say thank you for taking this out of the vault.
Nice to see you upload you sweet cat goblin thing!
The hoax explanation is specifically attributed to local 58, and I doubt the government would send out personalized tapes to every local channel in the country, so maybe the American dignity thing wasn't actually meant to be broadcast to the entire country?

I always really loved that new stargazing one. It's pretty freaky, and it's extremely unnerving in complete silence, just some hobbyist with a TV feed. And the artwork has a big "Darkwood" feel to it, with the fleshy, bumpy surface.
I really liked the little skeleton character so I looked up the artist that made him, kris straub. I though the creator of the arg just borrowed the character from him, nope, same guy. And also he apparently made candle cove as well, major art props to kris, cool guy
Between this, Ben Drowned, and Beast Wars; WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE FRIGGIN' MOON??
Thank you, Patreon supporters, and thank you Nick. ❤️
fun fact: there is actually a local58 easter egg in the candle cove creepypasta (someone said they saw the candle cove show on the "local58" tv channel)
"The 51st State is not a place!"
The 51st state: Am I a redacted/joke to you?
I would like to mention that Ichor Falls is the name of a ghost town in a story Straub made, and that Cadavre is a character from Broodhollow, another Straub creation.
Local 58 is inherently connected to all of Straub’s other horror works and I think thats lovely.
