You don't have DAP dry time Spackle or an equivalent? 20 min dry time primer infused so you can do straight to paint.
Good tip in this case is you break the rule of pulling tight to the wall and instead leave the mud slightly heavy then sand it down. That way it fills perfectly in one go every time. Minimal amount is sanding do to since you just use the rough side of your sponge and finish with the smooth
If you don't have quick dry spackle or a heat gun you can still finish in minutes by using a hairdryer to evenly heat from about 6 inches away. Just stop if it starts to bubble
