@@Darkhearts It's childish and cringy but overall meaning was "fall asleep faster and don't sleep on your side or a wolf will bite your tummy" something like that.
OK, time for some really terrifying theories. I’m from Russia (“please excuse my perfect accent”), and as it was already mentioned, what Doll is singing in the 1.0.0 version is the common slavic lullaby. (Just imagine my emotions after realizing it). It actually has a huge amount of variations, but the common parts are: Fell asleep faster; Don’t lie down on the edge; The grey wolfie will come and bite your side. Which perfectly fits in BB plot, especially the beginning scene of blood transfusion. But there is even more. What winter lanterns are singing is quite similar to it. So, if we decide to connect it to the lore we already know; Could it be, that Lady Maria have sung this lullaby to clocktower patients, and now, after obtaining the eyes of Mensis/ being absorbed by the Nightmare/ etc, they are singing the monstrously distorted version of this song? Especially considering, that they are casting the frenzy effect, which means interacting with the supernatural information from the depths of the Nightmare. It can be kind of interpreted as falling to the deepest sleep possible. Actually, I’ve been developing an really big theory about lanterns, based on analyzing G.P. Lovecraft references. If someone is interested, I can translate and post it in the comments. ... And I’ve actually wrote it in this line of comments, so I’ll add it to this comment to make it easier to find. ... The starting point and the source of their unique power is the Brain of Mensis. (It is literally calleg "mother brain" in game files). The Great One, that has an organ named living string. It is said it it' description, that the brain was lined with eyes on the inside, but they were of an evil sort. We already know, that insight and frenzy are two forms of the same process - obtaining supernatural knowledge. In case of frenzy it happends too roughly and causes the brain damage. It is likely that the school of Mensis wanted to use it as a sourse of insight, but it was impossible for regular humans. We know that research hall patients were the first attempt to create an superhuman creatures. The choir have continued this research and created celestial emmisares. But the patients are also similar to the lanterns, especially the separete head ones, that can attack with tentacles and cause frenzy. It is almost obvious that, the Mensis school used them in their own way, and created the lanterns. “Here starts the completely theoretical part” They needed a vessel able to absorb the knowledge from the Mensis Brain. But although the patient were already resistant to frenzy, there was another problem. The M. Brain has basically two effects, the second one is turning the victim's blood into hard spikes similar to ones on bloodletter weapon. Here comes another feature of the lanterns - they drop only the droplet blood gems, that have no spiky patterns like other types. It seems that the "head" patients have no blood, only brain fluid, but they need a functional body. Mensis school have created a special blood, that doesn't crystallise into spikes. (Ritual blood is described as “incoagulable” so at least it is a feature that exists in the lore). The last thing they needed was the shell for it. And here appears... Gehrman. We already have an evidence, that he was working with Mensis. The red moon above old Yharnam was summoned by Mensis ritual (it becomes obvious near the end of the game). But the description of the cord in the workshop says, it is also involved. It is unlikely, that this two cases are independent. Gherman wanted to bring the Doll alive so much, that he submitted his life to the Moon Presence, it it is likely, that he met it not suddenly. The doll has human form, but “sheds no blood”, which makes it a perfect shell. After being affected by the M. Brain, the head patient + doll combination transformed into the Winter Lantern. Here actually goes the Lovecraft reference. He has a short story “Out of the Aeons”. To begin with, this book mentions the “year of the red moon” that happened thousands of years ago. It is unlikely to be a coincidence, looks like H. Miyazaki have read this story. It also mentions the creature named Ghatanothoa. Anyone who gazes upon it or it’s image becomes mad and petrified, but the organs remain safe, the story ends with revealing of the safe and functional BRAIN inside of Ghatanothoa’s victim. And the most important part: eyes of a human, affected by It, contain an imprinted image of this creature, that has partially the same effect. So, the Brain of Mensis and the Wintern Lanterns May be the reference to Ghatanothoa and it’s victims. And just some interesting fact: a lot of people wandered what does “Winter lantern” mean. The truth is, in Japan version they are called emm... the same way as a plant “Physalis alkekengi” that has a lot of other names like “Japanese-lantern”, “winter cherry”, and yeah “winter lantern”. This plant was widely used in medicine with different purposes including sedative. Which is ironically the complete opposite of what lanterns are in the game. There is a very underrated criteria of fan-theories - how much it adds to the story and character development. The theory, that Lantern are just created by Nightmare to scare the Hunter, adds almost nothing. The “failing attempts to create the Doll” theory shows us, how much Gherman suffered, and why he ended up a slave of the Moon Presence. (And possibly gives some really tricky Easter egg).
The Winter Lanterns wear the doll's clothing, have doll hands and sing her song off-key. They're warped versions of the doll created by the nightmare to screw with the Hunter's head, taking the one ounce of trust and safety they've built up and tainting it.
Camazotz Bat, It may be so, but I think this part of the lore is much bigger and more important. ... It took some time to write this, but at least now a have it somewhere... ... And beyond all of this, there is a bug when visiting Chalice Dungeons that can corrupt her flags and just make her do completely arbitrary things. It's insanely rare, but JSF caught it on video happening.
Hey Lance, I found the song corresponding to the melody of the lullaby that the Doll is humming. It's Баю баюшки баю, (Bayu Bayushki Bayu) a Russian folk lullaby. It is a common lullaby that mothers sing to their children in Russia and some neighboring slavic countries.
I never noticed that line change in her prayer if you give her the hair ornament. These details are why I love this game man. 5 years later and we're still finding out new stuff about this game.
My game is still at version 0, due to me being unable to update it, and what happens in my game is each play through I collect the bone from the Abandoned workshop (old hunters bone?) and I warp to the Dream, she will say her "O Flora," dialogue.
This game is so entrenched in lore that it could be a real place, just wow. Thank you very much for making this video, this games lore seems to be bottomless
I was lucky enough to witness the lullaby when I played the 1.0 version (I couldn't update it due to not having internet at the time and I simply couldn't not play Bloodborne). I didn't know it was this rare of an event. Wonderful video as always. Keep up the great work!
Doll: sings a lullaby Hunters who played Dead by Daylight: I feel uncomfortable.. Nice video! I never knew about this lullaby and never noticed the change of the prayer.
I’m thinking hunters axe (obviously) the sorta wolf pelt helm from the dlc, and the music box for that distinct hum. the build itself would be pretty strength based.
@@TheRagingSerpent but you cannot copyright a half-hummed folk lullaby. Also, those last notes that the doll hums are not part of the original lullaby. Makes me think, maybe it's not the same song?
Thank you for the Bloodborne content. One thing I’d like to know is what marks a player as a “Bloodadled Hunter” this happens when wearing the hunter of hunters rune and is supposedly a “random” chance. Ideas?
Basically means if you have killed other hunters. The hunters of hunters covenant is specifically to hunt down hunters who have killed. It is a very rare chance. Entirely random as you have said.... Even a hunter of hunters can be blood addled and be hunted down by someome who has the HoH covenant. Ultimately the covenant was a one man(woman) cov with Eileen hunting those who have killed. So if we were to take multiplayer out then it makes a lot more sense story-wise. It isn't as "fun" as other covenants but imo that stamina replenishment is too good.
I'm a Bloodborne fanatic and I never even knew that it was possible for the doll to hum a lullaby. Thank you SO MUCH Lance for your hard work. Also, this seems to tie her even more strongly to the winter lanterns now.
Great job on the camera angles, solid work! I love how a random YT video of the Doll’s humming inspired a 15 minute deep dive of her chance ‘encounters’.
Wow you find the most amazing stuff, That humming piece was fantastic & now I'm going to have to try that myself. Thank you for your awesome hard work. It's truly appreciated. Also when I was playing the other day & came back to the dream she was asleep. I used a bold hunters mark to re-spawn in the dream shes standing & awake, When I approach she gives the "I was sleeping" line (Latest patch was applied post Rom as I wanted to try the dupe glitch. Not sure if this has any effect but thought it may be worth mentioning.)
I saw your progress through by accompanying your tweeter posts. But, man, this is amazing. A fine work, really. And that shot from the workshop at the beginning... just lovely.
I don't think so, the notes are different. But if you pay attention, you'll notice that the winter lantern song seems to be just a slower version of mergo's lullaby.
I'm no music expert but it sounds similar to the beginning of lullaby for mergo. just imo though. you might need to look at them next to each other to tell

Enjoyable as always, hehe you´re a real madlad, Lance!! I´m amazed that you jumped back and forth between different versions of the game to find there things out xP
Had to make one more comment to let you know that your videos are honestly treasures. You are shedding light on things very few in the world have seen before and it is incredible. I'd put you up there with the legendary Nomad Colossus and I hope you continue your dive into these games.
wtf, the dialogue at 8:13 totally resolves so many questions for me about bloodborne! can't believe i'd never heard it, didn't even know that your tombstone appeared in the dream before this vid
I like the Japanese voice for the doll; she has the same welcoming, soothing, almost nurturing feek to her voice much like her English voice. With the chance for her to be asleep, in every playthrough, she is asleep every other time I return to the Hunter's dream. I hear the prayer in half of those occasions. That hum from 1.0 is something I'd forgotten about until you played it in this video. The subconscious part of my mind remembered it, and it filled my heart with warmth and actually calmed me down just now. Always surprises me how much this game has etched itself onto my soul
The looping segments at 14:07 and 14:17, Can you make more scenes like this? They'd be perfect for animated desktop wallpapers. Good shot composition btw!
Hi, I'm probably coming in very late to this video, and I doubt what I'm about to say will be believed. However. I've been farming dungeons today for gems. On return to the Hunter's dream, I had my subtitles on and audio fully on. The Doll was standing in her normal spot at the bottom of the stairs to the front doors of the workshop. She recited her prayer. I understand the video completely discounts the chances of this, and goddamn do I wish I had it recorded, but she absolutely did. I think there may be some other miniscule chances involved. She was standing and awake, I hadn't approached her yet, but I was in front of her so had been seen. Feel free to say I'm a liar or whatever, I don't mind, but I'm posting this just after she did it. I'm running on the most current version of the game.
This actually happens, yes! There is some kind of bug in the dungeons that totally messes up her flags. My buddy JSF managed to do it literally 1 day before I posted this video, and I didn't really want to focus on it because it's absolutely a bug. But it's real and it happens surprisingly often when farming dungeons!
I did search all the dungeon files for instances of her flags being messed up and can't find 100% exactly what causes it, but I've seen video evidence of it at least once and heard it happen to people at least 4 times.
@@DebugMenu Oh thank God. I actually thought I was going to be insane and ripped apart for not having proof! My only thought is, it's my birthday today, and obviously I have my birthday set up on my account on the PS4. Could this be a reason why? But thank you for replying so fast!
Yep. I believe the VA is russian. So it was probably a personal lullaby from her time as a child. Maybe conflicted with the lore and was cut? Who knows? I certainly don't.
@@Theohybrid It would actually would be perfect for bloodborne because the lullabie goes: "Baby, baby, rock-a-bye On the edge you mustn’t lie Or the little grey wolf will come And will nip you on the tum, Tug you off into the wood Underneath the willow-root."
That 2% chance happened to me a few weeks ago. I thought it was something really rare, because I never managed to get her praying and sleeping anymore.
I am SO HAPPY for some reason to know the Doll wishes me to experience the warm glow of nostalgia. Nostalgia for the dream, and possibly also for herself.
This was a lovely video, very informative. I was familiar with most of the material because I've been playing both versions of this game a lot ever since Day 1 in Japan, but I never, ever found that lullaby. I'm curious as to what song it actually is myself. Regardless, I must thank and congratulate you on finding raw data on the *why* of many of these events here. Cheers! Update: found the song. Check Lance's pinned comment for my reply.
P.S. I am now going to uninstall and reinstall Bloodborne, make a new save file, get the doll to do the lullaby on that save file, then upgrade the game to get her to keep doing it. Hell, I've done everything else this game has to offer, may as well go all the way.
1:13 im pretty sure i remember this is because there is actually a pretty quiet snoring sound effect that I guess gets triggered like a normal dialogue
Yes but if you think about it, Gehrman also snores w/o a dialogue box. So the way I see it the dialogue box was intended for the lullaby and got replaced by snoring, but the box stayed as it was ''reserved'' for the lullaby. So ''freezing'' the game in v1.0 probably causes to glitch the game in a way that it thinks the lullaby is still in the game, so it starts using this ''reserved'' space again. I would actually love to know if the duration of dialogue box (which disappears after a while) and the lullaby are of the same length. It would explain a lot about the box for me.
I played this game like 6 times and I only heard the grave prayer once, now I discover that there’s way more than just that super rare event, this game just keeps giving man.
Feels like I've been binging so much cut/hidden content that I just braced for a breakdown of stuff I was familiar with but this lullaby humming was completely new...so neat!
I don't own a physical copy but I bought Bloodborne on release. I completely forgot the Doll's humming tune and now you've reminded me! Thanks, that cool!
@10:06 - Wow, you own 5 variants of Bloodborne discs & 4 different versions of Darks Souls 3. That is good to know. Nice collection. I own Bloodborne original version & Goty both.
Seems like everytime she is at the grave or sleeping. I got the sense that if I returned with enough echos to level up she would go to the grave so I noticed the grave. Pretty neat to know, nice work.
I think something the devs are drawing on to an extent here is "mono no aware", or the "sadness/pathos of things", it's easily one of the most beautiful concepts found throughout Japanese art and merges elements like the western concept of nostalgia with reflection upon the impermanence of life.
The melody the Doll sings is "Báyushki Bayú" , a Russian lullaby. Dead By Daylight players will also recognize it as the tune The Huntress hums to herself as she stalks her prey.

*remembered the comment of a guy who called your comment "bedsheet"*
@@camazotzbat5970 Same. I've read all lovecrafts stuff im interested if OP has more to add or makes his own video.
Camazotz Bat,
It may be so, but I think this part of the lore is much bigger and more important.
...
It took some time to write this, but at least now a have it somewhere...
It is almost obvious that, the Mensis school used them in their on way, and created the lanterns.
«Here starts completely theoretical part”
They needed a vessel able to absorb the knowledge from the Mensis Brain.
@@DebugMenu Do you have the name of that video?
Lance how do you estimate yet unexplored cut content in BB? Is there still a LOT?...
A Lullaby?? Oh wow. I’ve never played the original version before update but how cool to be able to see and hear that.
The black box appears when she is sleeping because there IS dialogue. She is snoring. They just didnt give it a sound effect in the English version.
they did give a sound effect (she snores, or breathes softly) in the english version, just not a subtitle for it.
I consider that fx
Snoring isn't dialogue, dude.
@@fjorgyn7438 It is in Japanese.

Ah, Bloodborne. A fond, distant memory that I treasure. The nostalgia I feel ,when I watch these kind of videos, is precious and strangely soothing.
You rock, Lance. I'm gonna watch this like three times in a row now.
My game is still at version 0, due to me being unable to update it, and what happens in my game is each play through I collect the bone from the Abandoned workshop (old hunters bone?) and I warp to the Dream, she will say her "O Flora," dialogue.
Now that... is interesting. I'll need to check if there's a flag attached to that bone!
@@DebugMenu what I thought was interesting was the extra line of dialogue for the hair ornament. Great video/discoveries!

I was lucky enough to witness the lullaby when I played the 1.0 version (I couldn't update it due to not having internet at the time and I simply couldn't not play Bloodborne). I didn't know it was this rare of an event. Wonderful video as always. Keep up the great work!

Most likely some sort of copyright thing.
@@TheRagingSerpent but you cannot copyright a half-hummed folk lullaby. Also, those last notes that the doll hums are not part of the original lullaby. Makes me think, maybe it's not the same song?
@@Banana-senpai I figured it didn't match the lore, was personal to the VA and was cut.
Either it was just the VA training or accidently deleted
@Steven Murphy it's really easy to accidently remove this outcome
I love the Doll's lullaby. I wish they didn't patch it out.
I'm a Bloodborne fanatic and I never even knew that it was possible for the doll to hum a lullaby. Thank you SO MUCH Lance for your hard work. Also, this seems to tie her even more strongly to the winter lanterns now.
I felt I bit creepy when heard her lullaby -- it sounds so familiar to the one my mum used to sing to me when I was a child
It might be. It's a real lullaby, common in Russia.

Also when I was playing the other day & came back to the dream she was asleep. Are there any similarities to the winter lantern singing?
Edit: And any similarities to lullaby for mergo?
I don't think so, the notes are different. But if you pay attention, you'll notice that the winter lantern song seems to be just a slower version of mergo's lullaby.
I'm no music expert but it sounds similar to the beginning of lullaby for mergo. just imo though. you might need to look at them next to each other to tell
It seems to be the russian lullaby called Bayushki Bayu
Maybe unrelated but it sounds like one of the killers from Dead By Daylight. Maybe it's a real lullaby?
The winter lantern song does actually seem to be a cut up version of this song. I’m pretty confident.
That doll is adorable af and must be protected.

Probably my favorite one you've made. The rare content is beautiful.

wtf, the dialogue at 8:13 totally resolves so many questions for me about bloodborne! can't believe i'd never heard it, didn't even know that your tombstone appeared in the dream before this vid
That lullaby content was the most needed thing I've ever seen be removed from a game
Amazing love how you still find new content. And was nice to see your Bloodborne collection. Please keep it up man!!
The looping segments at 14:07 and 14:17, Can you make more scenes like this? They'd be perfect for animated desktop wallpapers. Good shot composition btw!
Hearing the Japanese voice actor gave her a completely different vibe

Awesome work, Lance! This is the first time I've heard about that lullaby
Finally been waiting for this althrough I'm always updated on your discord, twitter and stuff :^)

WTF, her lullaby sounds like russian lullaby named «Bayu bayushki bayu»
I didn’t expect to hear it in Bloodborne
Yep. I believe the VA is russian.
So it was probably a personal lullaby from her time as a child.
Maybe conflicted with the lore and was cut? Who knows? I certainly don't.

Hope you are proud of yourself, now I got this humming in my head.
Nice job doing all these researches. So much dedication and passion went on this video. Thank you
1:13 im pretty sure i remember this is because there is actually a pretty quiet snoring sound effect that I guess gets triggered like a normal dialogue
It would explain a lot about the box for me.
i've always loved the doll, this is nice.

Amazing work dude!
I think something the devs are drawing on to an extent here is "mono no aware", or the "sadness/pathos of things", it's easily one of the most beautiful concepts found throughout Japanese art and merges elements like the western concept of nostalgia with reflection upon the impermanence of life.
