2018 GMC YUKON DENALI - Is The Luxury SUV Really Worth $80K?

  • The answer is yes. With other luxury SUVs approaching or exceeding $100K (Escalade, Lexus LX 570, INFINITI QX80, etc.) the 2018 GMC Yukon Denali (www.gmc.com/suvs/yukon-denali-...) delivers a lot for its price tag.
    UPDATE - All the interior seats are leather-appointed.
    Read my full review of the Yukon Denali here:
    www.businesstravelerusa.com/ne...
    Here's a full look and review of the luxurious, full-size SUV.
    The 2018 GMC Yukon is $69,165. The Denali Ultimate Package is $7,930. The press vehicle I drove also had Iridium Metallic paint, a $395 option. With GMC's $1,295 destination charge, the total was $77,785 (there was a $1,000 Denali package savings incentive). So with tax, it's more than $80,000.

    We just bought a used 2018 Denali that looks exactly like this one. I never thought I would say this but I like my 2020 Ram Laramie a lot more. Granted it's not an apples to apples comparison because the technology in the Denali is now 7 years old. My back up camera on the Ram looks like a high def TV where the Denali looks like fisher price.

      @KTv Thank you for watching and for your comment. Yes, this one was a convertible as it didn't say it had a roof. Seriously though, it's not about relying on the window sticker, the seats felt different, not like the front ones. Also, GMC hypes all the details on the window sticker, so it seemed glaring to not say it. Other GM cars, like the Escalade, do say rear or third row seats with leather appointed seating surfaces, but this one didn't. I am still not 100 percent sure about it.

    Trust me, Fred. Every bit of the seats in the Denali are leather. Also, you can get a basic Escalade for 74k, and a Yukon Denali for 72k with just the Open Road package. The Yukon is a better deal because it's loaded and comes with most options, where as a Escalade is base at 74k. A loaded Escalade is upwards of 98k for the same packages. But they both have leather in all 3 rows

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for watching and for your comments. I do trust you, it's just the window sticker for the one I drove says "front leather-appointed, heated and cooled seats" and then mentions the other seats without saying leather.

    • @timfitzgerald930
      @timfitzgerald930 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strange, yes. It's that way on the specs as well (online). But if you build one, it clearly states leather. I just got myself a Acadia Denali and it is a lot more clear that ALL seats are leather on the Specs. Not sure who wrote the specs for the Yukon lol but they did a terrible job.

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I've asked my PR contact at GMC, about the specific vehicle I drove. Here's what the window sticker says:
      Perforated leather-appointed heated and vented front seats
      2nd row heated bucket seats power release (no mention of leather)
      3rd row 60/40 split bench power fold seat (no mention of leather)

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @timfitzgerald930
      @timfitzgerald930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe they cheaped out because the price was getting way up there and they needed to stay below the Cadillac version, since they share most components and ride the same platform. My sticker on my Acadia Denali clearly makes mention of all seats being leather. Would be interested in finding out for sure. Maybe I'll do some digging.

      Wow, so many people are focused on this. To me, the second and third row seats in the Denali didn't feel like leather. I'm driving an INFINITI QX80 this week and those seats all feel like (and are) leather. Also on the Yukon, the window sticker I received from GMC only said the front seats had leather seating surfaces. It mentioned the folding rear seats and the third row seats separately, but didn't say they were leather. Car companies usually take every opportunity to say leather, so when I didn't see it listed there, and they didn't feel like leather to me, that's why I said that.

      Working in law enforcement, it's hard to smoke weed, but thanks for watching. The third row seats are not labeled as leather on the window sticker. In the Escalade, the third row seats are not leather. I hope you get to ride in an Escalade someday, they are great vehicles!

    GM/GMC loses big SUV battle to Ford/Lincoln IF u are putting anyone older than 12 in 3rd row. Seating angles HURT back there, in GM's. Hips below knees. Girls in dresses are not happy! Also, Lincoln/Ford's newer interiors win!

      THanks for watching and for your comments. I need to check out the Ford / Lincoln vehicles to compare them. You know the 3rd row gets a bit more leg room in the XL / Suburban / Caddy EXT models, but the seating angle may be the same.

      I’ve had both, and it depends. They are very much alike but the Escalade has just to much BS and I hate the taillights and all the lines when I compared them. Since 2003 I’ve owned 2 New Escalades and 3 new Denali’s all Loaded to the Max. Before I made my choice on the new at the time I 2016 Denali Completely Loaded Black Onyx with the 22’ Black Wheels (3999.00 option at the time) as well as the equivalent 2016 Escalade Black Onyx with 22’ Black Cadillac Wheels the with every option available which is the Platinum Edition. I preferred the Denali over the Escalade simply because if you see them side by side I like the cleaner lines on the Denali, and it’s got a lot less badging in Chrome etc. I didn’t care about the 40,990 price difference. I think I paid 83k and the Escalade was like 124k with what I wanted as far as options. I just traded my 2016 4 days before Christmas for the newest 2018 Denali Ultimate Package and had the dealer take my black wheels off of my old one and put the new tires on them and put the 2018’ wheels on the 16. I didn’t get the Ultimate Black Edition because I didn’t like the chrome on the Black wheels. I like the solid black. But it’s all in what a guy likes. The only difference truly in the Ultimate Black and Ultimate is the color and Wheels. The Ultimate comes in all colors but Black and the Black Ultimate is the reason why when looking at the top shelf of SUVs. I don’t like all the Suede in the Escalade Platinums onnthe seats, although the headliner is sweet. It’s just “Too Much” on something that’s already “a lot”. My 2016 has the Light Tan Interior and light wood, it popped when you opened the door. But this new Dark Atmosphere in the Ultimate is the way to go. It’s sweet how they mix Dark Grey seats with Rich Brown Carpeting, the lower and Upper Dash are Dark Rich Brown, and the aluminum accents are a light cooper color. And the technology differences are absolutely so noticeable. One of the Denali’s with this being my 3rd in less than 4 years was when the 1500 Truck Came out with the 6.2. I’ve always drove Diamond White Escalades and Denali’s until I saw that 16’ SUV and built mine online with the Black Wheels. So now I’m on my 2nd which this one is harder loaded than the 16’ and the apps you can get like the WSJ and several others are awesome. I have the performance upgrade on this one to, the cold air filter etc, and the new performance upgrade they can install. So with a factory vehicle that’s got 420 HP I’m getting a about 464 @ 5,500 RPMs in Auto mode (AWD) its 0-60 in like 4.6 seconds. They are all so sweet. I’ve driven the X6 M and The Mercedes. GMC gives you so much more bang for your money. Whether you like the Escalade or Denali. Take it from someone whose owned both. Go drive the highest end of both and you will feel what I’m saying. The Escalade doesn’t feel like a Performance Luxury SUV. It’s a little soft. Some like that. I’m like into Lambos and Ferrari 458s as well. Go drive a 2018 Denali Ultimate Black Package and see what I mean and tell them to have the Escalade ready when you get back. All in on this one I think with all upgrades taxes and all I was around 87,500. It’s all about what suits your fancy even looking at vehicles in the 100k range and up. Good Luck!!

      The 2018 is 4 on the Denalis for me. I’ve had 04 Escalade new and then I got the newer body style and that’s when I switched to Denalis. Actually I traded a 2010 Escalade Diamond White for a Denali Diamond White. They are so similar when you get them loaded out other then the suede in the Platinums. The 2nd Denali was the 2015 4x4 truck, the 1500 with the 6.2. I’m a SUV and a sports car guy, but I also like luxury sedans. After owning some BMW amd MB thru the years from M5. - SL500 I’ve stuck with a Lexus LS460L Mark Levison Edition with the reclining heat and cooled rear seats. It’s only about 400 HP and kinda slow 0-30. It from 30-140 mph I love how quiet the Lexus IS compared to BMW and MB. It’s “soft” kinda like the Escalade is to me compared to the Denali. And trust me, I would have bought the Escalade esp here this 2nd time from going to the 16 to the 18 Denali Ultimate Package. My solid black 22’ GMC wheels look way better to me than the black and chrome and I don’t like the Chrome on the mirrors. I had it painted black lol on the new one. I think I’ve got 1,800 miles and that’s mainly a trip from Texas back home to Ms. get what you like. They are both sweet. I like to be different and my vehicles to have my own personal touch. Oh, also of you go with the Platinum get the new Ceramic brake upgrade. It’s 2500.00. Man it’s crazy with a little work how quiet, luxurious, and powerful they stop with the brakes but they will launch to in Auto mode but if you want to spin put it in 2 wd. Lol. But I can hold my brake and launch and it’s doing 0-60 in about 4.6 secs and that’s just with a couple of upgrades. My old 2013 Zo6 Vette would do 0-60 in 3.8 and it feels faster because of the sound but I think the SUV is more appropriate and better for me doing business in. But I’m mailing my old Lexus out lol it’s a 2013 and I have like 90k on it now. I’m going to buy a certified PreOwned LS500 in probably 2020. Get like a 18’ or something because the new LS with the Executive Pkg is running about 150k.
      Either way you will be pleased and now they pretty much drive themselves on the highway and in traffic. They correct when you cross or touch the lines and hit the brakes when cars cut in front of you and are great for city commutes if you need to do some emails or something on your IPad. Oath the Escalade and Denali have the same systems and there are no differences and after driving one for almost 2 years and getting into the latest and greatest I didn’t see a difference with the Intelli-Drive systems. Happy Trails. Also this guy saying they don’t have leather is obviously not the guy that should be doing reviews on these vehicles. No pun intended.

      @FreddySherman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Denali I reviewed only had front "leather appointed" seats. The rear and third row seats were not leather. Thanks for watching and for most of your comments, head to a dealer to check out the 2018s.

      I wonder about that. It's competitively priced with other full-size SUVs, the big ones from INFINITI and Lexus are smaller and now are more than $100K. First, thank you for watching. I was pretty clear that I don't normally drive SUVs, I'm just a regular guy giving my opinion. I'm a travel writer telling people what the vehicle is like to drive and showing them around, I'm not a car expert. Also, I can bet more than half the people who buy a Yukon, will never use it to tow anything and also don't know what a lot of those features are.

      Yep I think you're probably right. But I also think that's why a lot of people watch reviews like this on TH-cam, so they can find answers to their questions. But hey, I think you've got a good brand and if you're able to support your lifestyle this way then I give you credit. Cheers.

      There are hundreds of reviews here on TH-cam by car experts and channels that focus on cars and car reviews. This channel is called Luxury Fred because it's all about my take on things. My videos are supplements for my written coverage. More than a lifestyle, this is my job, I'm a featured luxury travel writer for several magazines and websites.

      When you take the time to write a comment like "dude doesn't know what half of the features do....how can you review a car you don't know. c'mon man do your research" it seems you seek more than a personal take on things. That's why there are hundreds of expert reviews out there for you to watch.

    Nope not worth $80k. Especially now a days. Interior is dated. Need a refreshed look/ redesign with all technology (autonomous driving, active cruise control, auto parking etc etc) AND 3rd row more plush, and elevated so adult can sit in without their knees to their chest.... then maybe price can be justified!

      Not sure what you mean, but thank you for watching and commenting. I had the Yukon for a week and this is an-almost 20 minute review and road test of it. As someone who focuses on luxury cars and luxury travel, my minimum car value is $50K for a review so the Dart wouldn't work for me. I'm sure it's a great car and I'm glad you enjoy driving it.

      @@stephencataldo2574 I'm still not sure. To me, the rear and third row seats feel differently. On the window sticker, it only says front leather-appointed seating surfaces, it doesn't mention the second or third row. The window sticker has every detail, as they want to promote features, so it seems like they left it off intentionally (because they're not leather).
