Hey, i took apart my speedometer and i had to bend those metal pins, but im glad i did because the solidified grease wouldn't dissolve in anything, but i cleaned it out and put some durable grease and its working! thanks for the video
Taped down my needle also on my Speedo when had it apart /worked very well /my gear was also broken for the odometer /repaired and installed back / put a dab silicone on the end so wouldn't pop off again thanks for your tips!
Not trying to harsh on you, but this is very difficult to watch. A tripod would be very helpful. Around 5:30 you say, this is the little gear, but you show it for less than 1 minute. Lighting would be a big help. If it’s a bit too bright for you, it’s probably going to be just right on camera.
thanks, my vw speedo does not work, i'm going to try this the next time i get in the garage. A tip to test the speedo is to get a drill and hook it up to the cable and pull the trigger and see if the speedo is working.
Unfortunately a bunch of things. It's too dry. The hole in the wheel cap isn't perfect. The cable is binding somehow. The speedometer is dragging. It's sometimes rough figuring it out.
I replaced the tiny plastic gear about a year ago after reviewing your video and thank you for that. That tiny gear cost me about $30. I used a pressing tool to push the gear into place and ever since the odometer has been been working
Thanks a lot. The speedo of my motorcycle is actin gup in a big way. It makes all kinds of strange noises. The racket it make sis unbeleivable and when I disconnect it the motorcycle will actually roll perceivably easier! I couldn't believe that sort of noise could come out of such a meter and so I refurbished the breaks and replaced the wheelbearings first!. luckily I have spare but I am wondering if I should not also open thas to do some preliminary maintenance before I put it in and maybe I can even try to repair the defective one. What would you do? Just put the new (old) one in as is or first pull it apart.
Yes. I would fix everything first. I had the same problem. Bugs also run off a front wheel. And until I got the bearings fixed. The cables kept snapping off.
Thanks for the quick reponse. Yeah, knowing what I know now I am actually wondering why the cable hasn't snapped off yet. Off to the Bat Laboratory it is then!
I've had a look and in this case hardened fat was not the problem but the complete absence of any lubrication. What might at some time have been grease had turned into very fine black dust covering the surrounding area. Play still seemed acceptable though so I gave it a good going over with teflon spray. To say it works as new might be a bit premature but I drove it by an electric dril and it seems to be fine now. Thanks again for your insights!
Any idea what size that connection to the back of the speedo is? I'm connecting the cable to an after market speedo and it has a 5/8-18 thread. It's too small for the VW cable connection.

Man. I don't know. Has to be metric.
You never said what you soak the parts in….I guess it’s WD40?
Yes.
