When we went to see Alien at the theater we knew absolutely nothing about it. There was no trailer, no scenes from the movie. All they told us was that in space nobody can hear you scream.
I would like to add that we saw this on a Friday (unusual for us) and the place was full of teenage girls. Some of the jump scares I experienced was because of their screams and not because the movie scared me.
"Alien" is more of a straight up horror-suspense, "Aliens" is more horror-action. Both are stellar examples of their respective genres.
And then, The Thing (from 1982)
Alien is a B horror movie story with an A movie budget. Aliens is a B war movie story with an A movie budget. Both very enjoyable.
Wouldnt the star wars universe be great if they kept changing the genre all of a sudden?
@@SpurrBlack They have an entire galaxy to work with. Changing the genre should be among the easiest things there is. Horror (Event Horizon style) would be a party of non-Jedi trying to deal with a leftover Sith artifact. Fantasy would be a Jedi on a low-tech planet. Drama, police cases, soap operas, all of that should be easily within the scope of Star Wars.
Now a musical, that would be a proper Disney film

My buddy in high school wanted to work in special effects after graduation, so he had subscriptions to all the effects magazines. He told me we had to go see this movie “Alien” when it came out. Told me all the magazines were freaking out about it but wouldn’t give any details or photos. So we went opening night. We had popcorn and sugar babies and giant sodas, giggling in anticipation. Then the movie began. We didn’t eat a bite or a sip of soda the entire film, we were so glued to the screen. We went back and saw it nine, ten times more, dragging every friend and family member we could to see it with us. The film was revolutionary in its set compositions, creature design, directing and that a woman was not only the smartest and most level headed but the sole survivor in the end. Around a decade later, I was sitting in the theater with my husband, watching trailers before I don’t remember what film. A sci fi trailer came on that looked interesting. Then it showed Sigourney Weaver and the whole audience started murmuring, including us. Then it showed an Alien and every one of us started yelling and freaking out. James Cameron was doing a sequel to Alien. We were there on opening night for that one too. It’s a masterpiece too, in a very different way.
Don’t forget the original Alien trailer. No dialogue. No giving away the plot. Only a few seconds of jump-cut footage and that sound. And yet every time it was on screen, everyone went very quiet and I bet everyone who saw that trailer saw Alien. Textbook stuff that no-one does now, sadly.
@@barrywonderdog I absolutely remember that! And Time magazine (I think) had Sigourney Weaver on the cover with the title “Scary Summer” on it. It’s the shot where she’s sliding down the wall when the alien is peeking ‘round the corner.

The trailer for this back in 1979 closed with the statement: "In space, no one can hear you scream."
That was a great tag-line just because it was, but also Star Wars was still on everyone's mind.
Sir John Hurt claimed that Mel Brooks talked him into self-parodying his role from Alien (1979) by making it sound like it would be a brief walk-on cameo. Only when Hurt came to the set did he realize that the entire scene was an elaborate spoof of the chestburster scene from Alien (1979)

My cousins who was born after Alien came out but saw Spaceballs, never knew that scene was a reference to the infamous chestburster scene here until I told him about it after the old movie ride at Disney Studios.

Fun fact: in the scene where the alien bursts through the guy's chest, the actors weren't told what was going to happen. So, their reactions were 100 % real!
Rest in Peace Ian Holm (Ash), a terrific actor who died half a year ago.
Also John Hurt. The guy who had the alien bust out of his chest. One of my favorite actors.

Looking back, the prestige of those three actors alone - Sir Ian Holm Sir John Hurt, and Harry Dean Stanton, plus Sigourney Weaver - in the one film is astounding.
Can't forget Bolaji Badejo who was The Alien in this movie he died in 1992.

Fun fact, Ian Holm who played the robot Ash here also played Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings movies. He's done a lot of work over the years of course, but these are the two he'll be forever remembered for.

@@metalmayhem3622 Yes, because she didn't know how dangerous the creature on John Hurt's character was and didn't want to endanger the rest of the crew. She chose to do the right thing rather than what she would have wanted, which would be saving her friend. That's definitely a strong female character.

Something I love about this movie is that some how over 40 years later it still holds up graphically. It really is a testament to the power of practically effects and set design when done right

i was so fucking scared after seeing this, going home at night from san francisco to berkeley by mass transit was terrifying, as was walking along dark streets in SF. what a trip.
My friend's mother watched it in the cinema when it first came out...she was 8 month pregnant with my friend at the time! And yes, the embryo DID move during crucial scenes!

H. R Giger is the reason this is the most iconic sci-fi horror movie of all time.
During "That scene" (you know the one) none of the supporting actors had any idea what was going to happen, so their reactions were genuine.
Fun fact about the "chest bursting" scene. The cast didn't know what was going to happen, their reaction was real.
I don't believe that is completely true, because there was one guy laying underneath the table operating the "blood pump". So, the cast must have guessed what's about to happend.
But I think the cast didn't expect how horrifying the scene would actually turn out.
And re-created in Spaceballs. Same actor did a cameo in the space diner and the little singing alien popped out of his chest and the guy said Not Again!
Fun fact about your post: It is a misinterpretation of what did actually happen.
Of course the cast did know what was going to happen. They read the script!
What they didn't know however was how it would look like, how much fake blood there was going to be. Ridley Scott, famous for rehearsing all the scenes with the actors first, did not rehearse that one, because he wanted genuine surprise and shock at how bloody it was going to be.
@@Quotenwagnerianer No the cast as a whole had no idea how the scene was going to be done, they pulled John Hurt aside to get him into position while the rest of the cast was outside the room so they couldn't see the prep. Even the script said "alien emerges" with no details. There are several documentaries and interviews that support my comment with direct quotes from the actors themselves that say exactly what I said above. But nice try

In Alien John Hurt is the guy who “gets pregnant” with the Alien. He played the same part in Spaceballs.

Saw this on VHS alone at night when I was like 10 in early 80's. Scared the shit outta me.
Alien (1979) was groundbreaking sci fi horror-thriller. Aliens(1986) was a roller coaster ride that became one of greatest sequels in movie history. Both excellent.
The following sequel, "Aliens," is one of the best Sci Fi movies ever made... you'll need to add a star to your rating for Aliens.

The spoon is so he wouldn't bite his tongue off while having a seizure. However, the exploded chest kind of made it irrelevant.

Does seem to be a common thing in movies to do it, which is frustrating cause it's absolutely not what medical advice states to do.
I concur with everyone who says watch “Aliens.” James Cameron wrote and directed it. It’s just a fun popcorn action flick. I prefer it over the original personally.
I feel both Alien and Aliens are equally good, but in very different ways since they are (If you'll forgive the phrase) very different beasts
The artist behind the Aliens and their biological and technological aesthetic was Hans Ruedi Giger. He spent his whole life making art in that vein; he believed he was tapped into another dimension where it was real. Somewhat creepy. There's a really interesting documentary on him called Dark Star: H. R. Giger's World.
Part of why I call the motion sensors “Giger counters.”
Watching your pre-review speculation I had a moment where I just thought: "oh, you sweet summer child, you have no idea what you're in for."

When Aliens came out, I was at a convention where representatives came to give us some early sneak previews for Aliens. Then the QnA came up and many in the audience raised their hands.
First person said: Is Jonsey OK? Is Jonsey all right?
(There was a lot of people who were certain that the alien had infected Jonsey)
The people weren't sure what he was asking about and there was some discussion and finally he said "Oh! The cat! Yes, the cat is fine... and is actually in Aliens for a little bit. Next question?

It was one of the funniest moments I've had at a Sci Fi convention.
Oh... after Aliens.... STOP. Don't watch ANY other Alien movie after that.
The studio took the franchise away from Dan O'Bannon and they have ALL sucked since Aliens.
oh come on, yes the quality is not as great as the first two but people are overreacting about how bad they are. I'd agree to not watch the third, but the rest are watchable and fun

@@w1975b For me, the 'Alien' universe is synonymous with the four first movies with Weaver. From then on I think the manuscripts went bad very quickly.

Fun fact: only Caine "John Hurt" was the only one who knew what the chest buster scene was going to happened. That was actual terror on the faces of the other Castmembers.
And John Hurt redid this scene in Spaceballs
Not entirely true. They knew the chestbuster scene was going to happen (kind of hard to hide the animatronic and fake torso from the cast on the set). They weren't told all the specifics though so didn't know it would pop out so fast and didn't know there'd be a spray of fake blood splattering over them.

My mom and her friend went to see this at a drive in movie theater when it came out. Her friend was so freaked out that she had to turn the light on to get her drink out of the cup holder each time. LOL
Great reaction video. It's 42 years old, but films of this genre don't get any better.
No sci-fi horror has ever outdone Alien. It's almost a perfect film.

Next check out the sequel, "Aliens." One of the few instances where the sequel is every bit as good as the original, but yet is a VERY different tone and style of movie. Ripley goes full-on badass.
Despite how unpopular it is, I really like Alien 3
@@SamuelBlack84 It's not as good as the previous two, but I do think it works on its own. At least the Assembly Cut. The og theatrical version is kind of a mess. Really, it's a testament to David Fincher's skills that he was able to take what should have been a complete clusterfuck and make a decently watchable film out of it. (But I'm pretty sure Ashleigh would hate it.)

Aliens is nowhere near as good as the first. I think people haven’t watched the movie in 20 years and simply have memories of bad ass Ripley from their childhood floating in their minds. Sure, it’s the second best Alien franchise movie, but that’s not saying much. Alien is 9/10. Aliens is a 7/10. Nowhere close to the movie the original is.
@@SamuelBlack84 Exactly. Hell, he didn't even have a finished script. When he started filming, only the first half was locked down. Not to mention that a bunch of the sets had already been built, so he had to just work with what he was given.
The first time I watched this film I was 9 years old. One of my classmates thought it would be a good idea to take a horror film for our last day at school before Summer vacation and of course he picked this one.
I was shocked, horrified and fascinated. To this day, this is one of my favorite films and I even enjoyed the behind the scenes documentary with all the concept art made by H.R. Giger.
This is one of the best reactions ever. I can't decide if this or Aliens is my favourite of these two. I noticed that you have also reacted to Aliens, so I'm off to watch that now.
Sigourney Weaver was 30 in this! Hard to believe she’s 71 now. If you notice at the end of this movie Ripley states she will reach the shipping routes in six weeks. The sequel Aliens starts with her being picked up from space and revived - 57 years later.
Talk about giving the game away, I might as well have carried on writing out the script.

This was Sigourney Weavers first starring role and one of if not the first intelligent female action hero. This movie made her a star.
In fact, most of the cast were well known character actors and Tom Skerrit playing Dallas, was the biggest name in the movie, so killing off Dallas threw audiences at the time for a loop, since they would have all expecting him to be the hero and maybe have Ripley survive if she were his love interest

Lambert is a woman who went through transition - as revealed in her bio in the sequel. The intentional vagueness of her death scene has led to speculation that the Xenomorph sought to breed with her and Ripley in a state of panicked survival, only to discover with Lambert that she wasn't born with the appropriate reproductive organs, at which point it killed her.
This is every bit a sexual horror story, it's one of the de facto horrors on fear of sexual aggression.
And now you know where the "Oh, no, not again!" line from Spaceballs came from.

I saw this in the cinema. Twice. The second time I took a pair of washing-up gloves tied together and threw them into the audience when the dead face-hugger fell onto Ripley.
Apparently, I am still barred from that cinema.

I remember seeing this in a movie theater when it first came out and no one in the audience knew what was coming next. The atmosphere was so tense and suspenseful that my friend started laughing and couldn't stop and the guy sitting in front of us turned around and almost started a fight. Good times!

The Sequel "Aliens" is arguably a better film, the first two are "MASTERPIECES" the rest are trash.

It's a great sequel and better if what you want is an action movie. But for me Alien is the better movie and it's not even a question.
Eh. Aliens is action/adventure, Alien is a sci-fi suspense thriller. They are both great, but the sequel is a lot more formulaic, whereas the original was a pioneer of the genre.

Ah you watched the Director's Cut. The whole egg thing scene near the end of Alien is ruled out in future installments. No longer canon
Ridley Scott even said in the audio commentary that the theatrical version was the one he preferred. I think he was paid to do an alternative version because they were issuing deluxe set of the first four films including alternative versions for the others.
On one level a haunted house set in space... Suspense updated. One yet another, perhaps the last science fiction films with walls of blinking lights. And... timeless chills and thrills.
Escape From New York (same guy as the Thing). Another classic, in my book.

It’s a different style of movie (action rather than suspense) but avoided the dreaded sequelitus by that change and turned out just as awesome a movie in its own way.

Yeah I'd say do the sequel soon. Try and watch the extended special edition though if possible
@@awkwardashleigh yep absolutely, it dovetails right onto the end of Alien so you get the most impact from her character arc having the memories of what she’s already gone through firmly in mind as you watch her in this one.
Also agree with Michael above: you should absolutely watch the extended edition.

The first chest burster scene was a surprise to the cast as well. When everyone jumps back from the table. That’s genuine shock.
They knew it was happening, they just didn’t know how much blood there was gonna be/what the chestburster was gonna look like.

According to legend, Ridley Scott had a guy off camera with a bucket of real pigs blood to throw over the actors. The actress playing Lambert, got the worst of it and was royally PISSED with Scott for days afterwards

When they shot the chest-burster scene, they used squibs (small explosives meant to eject prop blood or guts) on John Hurt (Kane). They didn't tell any of the cast about this, so the reaction of the actors to blood spurting out of Hurt's body was real.
Also, there was a guy just off camera with a bucket full of pig's blood (Real Pig's Blood) to throw over the actors and the actress playing Lambert, got the worst of it. Suffice to say, Ridley Scott knew to steer clear of her for the rest of the day
