It's been 15 years since his run of Company, but the way Raul sings the word "alive" hasn't changed and *still* sends shivers down my spine. This is probably my favorite performance out of this whole production and that's saying something. Bravo.

This interp is magnificent. He acts the song appropriately for the time we're living thru - offering humor (somewhere I can walk for miles) and pathos (such a lovely world we'll weep). I thought this was one of the most successful song of the broadcast - well sung, well acted, well lit, and scaled for a screen. I was very moved.
I couldn't agree more. I always thought he sang well (through music and some videos on TH-cam) but this though, you can clearly see how he emotes. While there were many great performances that night, this was definitely a standout for me.

I'd never heard this song before (I'd only ever heard "I Remember Sky" from Evening Primrose), and now it has wrecked me. It's as if it was WRITTEN for this almost-year of Covid quarantine. I can't believe how fitting...how heartbreaking...and Raul honestly looks so sad. So actually, for real sad.
Lockdown has given this wonderful song added poignancy. And Raul Esparza's interpretation is truly superb - it begins quietly, then builds and builds to a magnificent climax. Bravo!

THIS is all the proof needed to show that an artist only needs the talent, love of the lyrics and music and his own sheer joy to bring a song to life. He could do this in a phone booth! Beautiful!
For some reason the line " Where birds that make a sound.. are birds " makes me cry every single time. The genius of Sondheim, and a perfect song for our times

@@bruce4732 I know . Have you seen Evening Primrose ? The film quailty of it on TH-cam is terrible , but its still an affecting piece. Its poignant enough in the film , but it really works as a lockdown song

It's August and I'm still watching this pretty much every day.
A quiet morning, a moment of pause, then I find this. It's a wool blanket, a warm cup of broth, a realization of hope. Talent that truly leaves me speechless, and with a tear in my eye.

C’mon, this is a triple Wow! The whole Sondheim at 90 ensemble is supremely talented, but in this case Raul is simply untouchable. Listen to his initial frailty, then expanded phrasing and climactic ending. I’m on my 6th listen so far and it’s still fresh. BTW, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Sondheim performance also is wonderful.

I only just saw him in company on Friday night I hadn't seen it on TH-cam before. He was amazing. I'd watched the Sondheim tribute a few weeks before, and had no idea who he was. Now I'm a big fan!

I think this may be my favorite Sondheim song. Hearing this sung during the early months of COVID isolation, not knowing when and how it would end…this jut brought me to tears. It still does.

Funny, I knew only as a singer when I watched Company.
I rarely hear and see a singer who can take a song, and show and feel so much emotion. He has a beautiful voice. I think he has more than just a Broadway voice and probably could do a full concert! I'd love that. Raul, you are quite gifted...stretch your wings and go out on your own❤.

Raul has been on Broadway and Off Broadway many times. He has extensive expertise in this area as well. I saw him in the musical "Taboo" and off Bway 'The Normal Heart". He was brilliant in BOTH.

Broadway's Stars in the House, Tartuffe, The Waves, interviews, and of course this masterpiece for Sondheim's birthday. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Raúl. You truly helped to keep me sane.
