I have this in 7.62x39. Great shooter. I've shot countless corrosive rounds through it and it still works like a charm
@@kellyharbeson18 nice rifle, fun to shoot. I have some reservations about the 7.62x39 but then the 30-30 worked well for a long time so maybe its enough
You're a good dude Mike. Thanks for all the sharing and educating you do.
💯💪🏼🙌🏼
When a new rifle is made with no sights / intended for use with a scope, and has a low cheek stock, an angel looses its wings.
Hopefully you write books or articles or something. : ) Let's get all those wings re-installed. No more rifles without sights. No more cars without steering wheels either.
“Loose” is the opposite of “tight”
@@BloodiedYetUnbowed tight is the opposite of your mom
You will eventually reach an age where iron sights are just shadows though. Ask me how I know
@@DinoNucci Oh sh*t LMAO.
My nephew took an Elk in Alberta with that rifle last year. 225yds. Took it down no problem. One in the engine room - one in the shoulder. Doesn't matter what caliber that sequence drops big animals. That Grendel is a hot rod. These Howas are great rifles. less than 7 lbs with a scope. Mike just make sure you use the hunting round version. That round is really clipping and the bullets disintegrate. My brother loads his with a soft point lead. Mushrooms beautifully. It'll take moose, elk, deer, etc with the right bullet. Amazing how fast that little shell moves. My nephew can hit a 4 inch gong at 300yds. damn impressive. These modern rounds are really something.
4 inches at 300 yards...? Are you shitting me? I've never done that on my best day.
Another well done video Mike. Now you have restored my lust for a 6.5 Grendel that I thought I had overcome!😀
If you like the smoothness of that action you will love it after you've put a few hundred roundds through it. I am a fan of the Howa and Weatherby by Howa rifles and triggers. Thanks, Mike another timely and interesting video.
Nice! Looks like that would make a decent scout rifle.
Came very close to getting a Howa Mini Action in 6.5 Grendel. The limitation for me was the lack of a 10 round mag. I end up with a Howa Short Action in .308. Thanks for sharing!
That's a fantastic choice. You'll never look back.
🇦🇺😎👍I have one in 7.62x39 and I love mine. Mamba makes a trigger guard/ mag well and 10 shot mags that work great
I've been torn between those two riles. Howa 1500 in 6.5 grendel or the 308.
I prefer the top loading floor plate design. Easy to load with one hand and easy to empty. Only an issue if using the rifle for pest control/culling or if you can’t shoot. Thanks for sharing as always. Cheers from Aus
I agree - I bought a Jefferson Outdoors floorplate - fantastic improvement
Thank you Mike for all your videos!!!
Bought one in 7.62x39. I really think of it as a solid rifle. One piece bolt, good trigger, 3 position safety, and it shoots! The only issue I had was the plastic trigger guard and mag well. I replaced it with a Diversified Innovated Product’s aluminum CNC milled replacement.
That classes up the rifle totally! I bought a Jefferson Outdoors floorplate for mine
I have one in .223- very accurate little rifle. I would love a flush 5 round magazine as the 10 rounder tends to get hung up on stuff.
Try Jefferson Outdoors - I bought their floorplate. A+++
Mike, I’ve set up three Minis so far: a 6.5, a 7.62, and a Carbon .223. All have aftermarket magazine units; hinged floorplates from Jefferson Outdoor and Oregunsmithing LLC on the 6.5 and 7.62, and a unit from Jefferson Outdoor that uses CZ 527 magazines on the .223. Must-have mods IMO, and the modest cost of the Mini means that you can tailor it to you taste without breaking the bank. I’m a huge fan of these excellent little rifles and also of the 6.5 Grendel, which gives you 6.5 MS and/or .250 Savage ballistics combined with excellent barrel life, and in my Mini, effortless load development. Thanks, yet again, for the excellent content.
The thanks are all mine! I received and installed the Jefferson Outdoors floorplate - what a masterpiece - and my rifle is classed up. Soon some kind of sights and it'll be perfect. Oh and I agree the 6.5 Grendel is probably the most useful of all the new 6.5s - for real world hunting - at least as I know it. All the best.
I have a couple Howa rifles and of course a few Weatherby Vangaurds with howa barrels and actions. All excellent rugged rifles and would definitely consider a mini.
You chose well - I find the Mini has it all - and the 6.5 Grendel is tops.
I have one in 223, excellent quality and accuracy. I noticed the sound of the bolt is little loud like the surface finish not what it could be, I had that problem on another Howa I purchased (Long story). I like your videos!
Thank you. I guess those micro ridges on the bolt make a bit of a zipper sound.
A great load for the grendel is a 140eldm with tac powder, cci 450. Use Barnes load data for 140 gn match. I also seated long to 2.347 which was still jumping in my rifle. Barely fit In magazine. I went above max charge seated long and never hit pressure. Was hitting 2434 fps. Make sure to load up slowly and do at your own risk.
I have the carbon fiber stock on my 450 bushmaster howa mini. The stock weights 17oz, i measured it before i put it on. It saves 1.5lbs from the houge stock. My rifle with a scope and sling weights 6.5 lbs.
Great idea - powerhouse and easy to carry
Love my Howa mini in 7.62x39. just ordered an aluminum bottom metal from Jefferson Outdoors that takes CZ 527 magazines. Since I have a 527 I'll only need one style of magazine. Really the polymer bottom metal is my only gripe with the Howa rifles.
Great decision - I bought the same! Absolutely superb. Jefferson's floorplate assembly is a must.
@@kellyharbeson18 been stocking up on the Belom myself.
Another great informative video. I always enjoy your content. Thanks
Thank you for being here.
Howa has proven value , I won't shy away.
I agree - best value out there and highest accuracy for dollars spent. Superb.
Can't wait to see the floor plate to get rid of the detachable magazine. Have been looking for one for ages.
Here you go : )
jeffersonoutdoor.com/howa-mini-hinged-floorplate/
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you, nil stock now, but will wait.
Good call. Tikka, Howa/and Zastava seem to be the way to go with new American-market rifles.
Just hope the Howa mags hold up well enough. Looks like a winner.
All great rifles - the Zastava is especially fine
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns glad to hear. Wasn't sure how they were doing in the present day. Not a lot of media exposure for their Mausers. Funny enough, I recently crossed paths with an old Parker Hale that I mistook for a Zastava. Not half bad, either.
I love mine. Boyd's stock, glass bedded, Oregunsmithing bottom metal, Talley rings, Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope. Very accurate.
Perfect
Nice review, as usual. There is one thing, which is largely cosmetic on these and rifles like Remington, is a missing guide bar on the bolt. The big gap beside the bolt while its closed, doesn't look right to me. I am not a big fan of extended magazines either, right there is usually the most comfortable place to cradle the rifle, and I have no need for more than five shots when shooting, three is plenty, two more give you a bit more confidence of not running out. Like you, I like the smooth lines of a floor plate, it also can't be lost as easily as a detachable one. There are plenty of advantages to these larger detachable mags though, at least people have choice now on how much ammo they think they will need. I have always wanted a lightweight small rifle, for a walkabout shooter, my Sako 22-250 was it, but something lighter would be great, now old age is taking its toll. The 6.5 Grendel in this little Howa just about fits the bill.
Good post. I bought a floorplate from Jefferson Outdoors - near perfect now...except for those missing iron sights : )
🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate Mamba makes a mag well / trigger guard for the mini action and a 10 shot detachable mag. The great thing is now the mag catch is behind the mag . The old setup was causing me to continually brush against the catch and drop the mag on the ground. Mine is in 7.62x39….. I love it as it’s a pleasure to shoot. Great video🏁
Thank you - I'll look for a Mamba! All the best!
Website or contact for the 3D mag? Just bought the mini in 350 Legend and desperate for better... economical mag.
Great show 👍👍👍👍👍😁
Much appreciated!
I have a 308 Howa 1500 and I like it. I just keep the 3 round internal magazine because I have an ar10 in 308 that has detachable box magazines to fill the niche of a powerful battle rifle.
I have 2 CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel. I like the old school blued steel and walnut . I was able to buy a CZ m. 527 action only. I had a friend who replaced the barrel on his Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creedmoor for a carbon fiber Proof barrel. He never shot even one round through his take of barrel. I bought it and had it put on the CZ Action and chambered in 6.5 Grendel. I owned many rifles in the past 50+ years but never one as accurate as the CZ 527 with the Ruger precision rifle barrel on it.
Haven’t stopped by your channel in a while but your content is as great as ever!
Thank you for another good video. The Winnipeg magazine obviously works and it looks much cleaner than the standard Howa magazines😁! They are partly what stopped me from buying a Howa mini action in 7.62x39. I was also looking at the Ruger American but got an excellent deal on a possibly unfired Izhevsk Bars 1 (snow leopard in English) rifle.
The Bars 1 has a good set of open sights and will take 16mm Brno/CZ/Tikka style ring mounts. My Leupold VX3? 1.5-5x will probably end up on this rifle as my Leupold Euro 2-7x33 with No. 4 style reticle based on the Heavy Duplex, works well on a .22 Rimfire. Your Howa Mini Action is an excellent bush rifle.
That Izhevsk is excellent - the open sights are wonderful. Thanks for the note.
One of my new favorite gun channels!
Love Howa
Good video Mike, nice rifle you have there, and beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing.
Although not walnut - I must say this is a very fine and practical rifle.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I hope you continue to enjoy it for many years.
Neat little rifle there, and in a desirable cartridge too, thanks .
Light and fast and fancy - I think that's from a Western book of some sort - but true for this Howa : )
I have 1 in 223 love the accuracy and the simplicity of it. Gr8 video
Yes indeed - fantastic rifles!
Howa are a work horse. I bought a .223 mini howa heavy barrel to replace my Interarms mark X I stupidly sold.
Its very accurate once you work out its favorite load. Only thing I dont like is how quickly the barrel heats up.
That's interesting - the barrel heating up I mean. When I was much younger I did some serious gopher shooting where ranchers needed no more holes in their cattle land. Hot out there some days. The barrel of my .222 was too hot to touch sometimes. So I remembered the machine gun water jackets and made a sheet metal jacket around the barrel - filled it with oil. it actually worked. When too hot I let the old oil out and put cool oil in. But it leaked and it was too homemade. Still would work. Rifling is like a spiral of road blocks for the bullet as you know; much friction and thus heat. I guess they all heat up. The nasty is that those thick barrels take longer to heat up...and longer to cool down. Thanks for the note.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I was thinking it was the mass of the thicker barrel that takes longer to cool compared to the mark x lightweight barrel. As I said accuracy is not diminished. I was thinking of getting my gunsmith to slightly ribbed like the barrel on the Japanese Type 96 machine gun barrel. It would cost more then the rifle is worth, but it would look cool and actually work. I use it for Pig hunting manly and can fire 10 to 15 shots quickly on mobs so yeah it gets hot quick
Nice to find another Howa fan. I have their 6.5 Creedmoor APC. Very heavy and tacticool style. I love it. Only issue was the magazine that came with it was disassembled, and I had to put it together. Also, the spring in the mag had to be stretched out to push the rounds up. Anyway, looks like you got a sweetheart there - - enjoy it.
HOWA is a remarkably under-rated bolt action rifle. The model 1500 is a take-off of a SAKO design....and the HOWA has remarkable build quality, has very good barrel/action squareness....and these shoot very well...... and the HACT trigger is incredible. Yet is considered by many as a low-grade budget rifle which it is not.
Thank you for an obviously informed opinion. Howa's and Vanguards are a steal. Some are writing me that Weatherby is doing something with their line...hopefully no tampering with the Vanguard. BTW - I have a Vanguard in .240 Weatherby : accuracy beyond belief.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns ....👍
Nice, 7mm08 would be my choice.
Have one for each of my sons. Both were shooting them at 7 years old w reduced recoil and took deer at that age. Incredible round. They usually don’t take a step
The 7 08 is the best.
They have 7mm08 and .243 now. I have the .308 and think I’ll get a .243 next. First year of the super lite was 308 and 6.5. The carbon can be had in long action calibers, .308 kicks plenty hard in a 5 lb setup, I’d leave long calibers for wood stocks and 7.5lb rifles.
6.5 Grendel is an amazing round!
I agree
I've looked at the mini action Howa rifles online. Wondered about one in 7.62x39, but not sure what all they chambering in that action. 6.5 G and 223 I think, maybe 350 legend. I like the Howa/Vanguards, and often steer people to them. Many of the Budget guns have creeped up to similar price as the Howa rifles, and in that case the Howa is usually the better gun for the money, as the cheaper made ones don't even belong in that price category, yet somehow are.
The words of experience. Yes - somehow the American and Axis cluster around the Howa and Vanguard. Interesting parking.
Big fan of 6five grendel
Probably as useful as a cartridge can get for the quiet hunters like me.
I built my first gun part from a stove bolt in 1968...a firing pin for a single barrel break over shotgun made in 1913...it's all I had as a 13 year old boy...it's still working today...I'm gonna take it to nephews duck camp and shoot it...they have fancy $1,500 semi-auto shotguns made in Italy...they will laugh at me when I show it to them...then, it's on...they won't be laughing at the end of the day...
I'd choose your gun any day.
Great video but that bolt noise is something I’d have to modify, I guess I’m used to Sako and Tikka
It's a bit of a zipper sound. I didn't notice much but many did : )
Get you a cz 527 in 6.5 grendel, they discontinued now and values going up at the moment
I'll try to find...not easy tho
I'm on the "notify" for a 1500 Mini in 6mm ARC to complement my AR build. One of these days....
Justin Trudeau won't like the 10 round magazine . . .
I'll have to look up that name.
😂😂😂👍

Never heard of her!
Who even cares what J.T. says? He's an idiot. He said Canadians have no right to self defense but if some maniac breaks into my home and tries to harm my family we will see what happens. He plays God with our lives. It has to stop.
Very nice Mike 👍. I really like these new mini actions. I also like the clean lines of a floor plate with a floor plate on this mini action How many rounds can it hold? It would be perfect if it was five. My favorite cartridge for the mini action is the 6 mm ARC is very similar the 6.5 Grendel. Energy-wise they're almost even the 6 mm just a little bit faster. I really prefer a traditional Woodstock but that carbon fiber does look pretty nice . I think all of the mini cartridges are very accurate and should be great for long barrelife and great for the entire family to shoot because there's no recoil. I've thought about getting one of these to train my wife at 15-year-old son. Thank you Mike 👍
What is that friction sound when cyling the action? Almost sounds like plastic on plastic. Im not all that hip to some of this new stuff.
Sounds like my kids ruger American.
The new pushfeeds have a zipper sound that is noticeable with the first 20-40 rounds. Goes away. Tolerances are tight
@@mogulrider zipper sound is a good description. Thanks for the insight.
If these came with open sights I would definitely get one in 7.62x39
@@kellyharbeson18 I had a CZ 527 .. was nice but had some issues.. cheesy magazine , funky trigger and quite expensive
These are really cool, I just with they would make these with iron sights.
Yes - me too!
Just bought one of these trying to find a scope. GF really likes Docter. She thinks the owl logo is cute. They seem to be out of biz. Nikon discontinued the Monarch line? Redfield sold to a sporting goods store. They moved production to China. Those were 2 more of my go to brands. At least Meopta seems to be still around.
Swarovski is superb as you know and Leupold as well
Now i want one
6.5 Grendel should be the NATO standard for all member countries. It's really a do-everything cartridge.
I have a hunch you're right. Accuracy is tops, economy and weight : excellent; down range energy : as good as it gets; barrel wear : excellent. With all these things going for the Grendel it's unlikely that they'll select it. So it goes. : )
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns was designed by Bill Alexander to replace the 5.56mm Nato round. But for some bizarre reason they never adopted it. It is used in some military capacity in Serbia I believe.
Easy upper change and same mags with only 27 round capacity. Inexpensive for the swap over. Very practical.
They're good value, but I find the mag a bit rattly and insecure feeling and prefer the mag system on the Ruger Ranch setups, esp the 7.62x39 with the Min 30 mag. Very secure.
I bought a hinged floorplate from Jefferson Outdoor - classes up the Howa to no end and is made like a Rolex
jeffersonoutdoor.com/bottom-metal/
Flawless guns
What causes the zipper type sound when the bolt is retracted?
Our unusual sound equipment and micro ridges on the bolt - which actually runs very slick and hold oil.
does the bolt or receiver have a lot of machining marks on them? The bolt sounds kinda of zippery sounding when you operate it back and forth.
Hi Mike, which so you like better the CZ527 or the Howa? I have a CZ 527 and it’s nice but I’m not a fan of the magazine. It also seems to pop out sometimes after I fire a round.
Hello and thanks for asking. I'll probably surprise a few viewers. I sold my 527s and stick with the Howa. I also noticed the CZ magazine and in my hands the Howa is quite accurate; although I miss the iron sights which the CZ has. I should mention I purchased a floorplate for my Howa as well.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns thanks for the prompt reply. I’m getting a bit iffy of the CZ 527 as well. The sights and CRF action are nice but the magazine is a bother. I might give the Howa a try. I found a stainless barrelled action for sale in Canada. It would be a perfect short range deer rifle for BC
I have a 223 howa mini that I swapped the bottom metal to one that'll take cz527 magazines
Perfect
"People like alot of shots" points to 5 round magazine.
I think they will build the mini in 6mm arc that is based on the same case but I don’t know if they are available yet?
6 ARC is a failed DOD bid that Hornady is seeking to recoop the R&D costs on the public.
Great video as always, thanks. It looked and sounded like there was little polishing on the bolt and action. How would you rate it for form and finish against other rifles you review?
Hi - You have a sharp ear. I noticed that the Howa and the Ruger American and others have micro ridges on the bolt body that make a sort of zipper sound when working the action. I also noticed that if I use a little heavier gun oil on the bolt the ridges hold the oil and the action runs extremely slick. The Howa and Weatherby Vanguard are beautifully made - I'd rate fit and finish 9/10.
Another excellent video sir. Do you have any information on the gentleman that 3D prints those mags? I just picked up a Howa Mini "full dip". Id love to try a couple of those magazines. Keep up the great videos, please.
The problem with this rifle is; "which one to choose"?! The 223 makes the most sense, the 7.62x39 is the ultimate shtf companion, the 6.5 Grendel is the longer range choice, and the 350 Legend is the lightest, and can be used in straight walled states.
Maybe one of each? 😂
great gun, 🤠
Love my mini 6.5 Grendel… wish it was the carbon fiber like yours but purchased mine pre carbon fiber offering. Shoots well and no recoil. Can you provide a link to the Freedom magazine fellow please? Thx
You're well ahead of the game - I hope this is the link you're looking for
jeffersonoutdoor.com/howa-mini-hinged-floorplate/
I have the 7.62x39 mini action. Love it. They also make it in .223. I have a question maybe you can help. I understand that you can safely shoot .223 in gun chambered 5.56 but not the other way around. So why do companies make guns chambered in .223 ? Why not make them in 5.56 so you could shoot either round.
I asked a manufacturer and most people want a .223 - due to factory .223 ammo and throat dimensions and rate of twist consistent with sporting ammo. The military stuff is best in military rifles. I sort of understood what he was saying.
I hope savage makes a straight pull short action.
Great idea
Nice video
Great video though . wonderful company and I like everything about it but I do not like 6.5 Grendel . Not because of ballistics or anything about the lethality of the caliber but that they caliber did not take off and is a dying caliber. 6.5 Swiss was a great caliber. 6.5 Arisaka was a strange caliber that was ahead of its time. I love how everyone thinks 6.5 is a modern caliber when the swiss,Spain and Japan were using the 6.5 back in WW1 and WW2 . The 6.5 Creedmoor is the same cartridge as the 6.5 Swiss.
I've tried the 1500 Super Lite here and it's unbelievable how light it is at 4.43 lbs -- lighter than many 22s. Sure the bolt isn't as smooth as a Tikka but it's a small sacrifice for how light it is, especially for a 6.5CR / 308. You spend a lot more time carrying a hunting rifle than cycling the bolt.
Fine comment - these are very, very fine rifles.
The bolt sound scratchy!
It's singing : )
Every Howa I have picked up that was new sounds like that. I bought one in 7mm-08 and sat on my couch cycling the bolt watching TV. It's quiet now, took 2 episodes of Seinfeld.
Is that bolt noise amplified by your mic, or it is really not that noisy? Sounds from listening here on the video, as if the machining marks are very pronounced.
Hello - It's just our "20th Century Coyote Production" quality - sorry about that. The mic must have picked up something or amplified what is a smooth and excellent action.
I thought it was based off the 220 Russian case. then the 6mmARC is a necked down 6.5 grendel.
You're right : )
Just received my howa carbon stalker 6mm arc and pretty disappointed.first the barrel is pinned to one side of the stock wont be sliding any paper under it then the bolt has spots on it where theirs no coating on and another part of the sock right by were bullets eject is chewed up…called legacy and they had me pull it apart and try to realign it and retourqe it and its clear the stockys stock is messed up and poor job on coating the bolt now the guns heading back with tags still on it…pretty bummed also the bolt sounds like a zipper when you work the action
Watch out you don't look too modern with that setup. 😆
😂 - yes Rick - I'll be carefu!
I know these are cheap, but all the cheap rifles with the action that you can hear the friction bothers me. Maybe I was spoiled with Mauser based actions being some of the first stuff I owned, but I don't find the appeal to something that rough when you can get a semi-auto for not much more.
They talk about a Ruger sounding like a zipper
❤
Good good and good. Is it available in 243?
It's too short for .243 but the 6.5 is a great sub for the .243 and many would say better.
Looks like western Washington 😊
Would love have a Howa mini action, but until they start making lefties in these rifles, my money always goes elsewhere.

Yes - the CZ is fantastic - but apparently out of production for now.

A bit crazy, but your Edmonton friend is both manufacturing an illegal product in Canada, and risks a mandatory 2 year prison term for putting a 10 round mag in a long gun. While I obviously don’t agree, he might ask you to keep it quiet on the net!
