Love sandwich cake that contains liver pate and chopped pickle or what it's called in English, between the layers,. And pressed pineapple juice on the bread. Shrimp, cheese, salad and ham on top. Mom learned how to make it when she worked at a supermarket.
yepp, in the version I make I have tuna salad in one layer, and the other a ham mixed with mayonaise (my mom used horse meat ("hamburgarkött"), which I hated so I use regular meat). Then crème fraîche + mayo around the top with lots of shrimp, cucumber, dill, and eggs on it. When I worked in "delikatessen" at a grocery store with catering we had several types of smörgårdstårta, ex. classic, salmon & shrimp, italian, roastbeef etc. Classic had ham on the sides (I prefer sallad on the sides, or egg + cucumber. The most popular one at that catering place was salmon and shrimp, which to me feels more classic, but I guess it isn't. I'm kind of sad that most places that sell smörgårdstårta now sell it and fill it only with skaagen. It's nice, but it doesn't really feel that great? I like all the different tastes mixed together
I once had a meat version where the main star of the show was a layer of ground up beef jerky in rydbergs chicken/curry baguettesallad Sounds insane but the tiny chunks of beef jerky just elevated the entire thing and left me enjoying the aftertaste for a while
Think its fair to say that 99% of all Swedes had one for their birthday or at a birthday celebration. Its just one of those standard things along with prinsesstårta; princess cake. 🙂 You could definitely make one on your own. Just pick whatever you like & assemble!
First thing, this is just a suggestion on how to make it. There is a million different ways to make it. Most well stocked stores have them and bakeries and some cafe´ s
Yup. My family has people who are either allergic to, or just don't like various seafood, so we usually make one with things like ham and leverpastej (liver paté), instead of the shrimp/prawns, crayfish and other seafood shown in the video.
But if u want a really good one you need to go to a proper place.

@@henrikssonalbin92, my local ICA sells some of the best smörgåstårta I've ever had, and I've worked in a kitchen. So you _can_ find good smörgåstårta in the grocery store as well... it all depends on who's making it.
I used to work in the delikatess at an ICA and made the smörgårdstårta, and I'm kinda mad at myself for not memorizing it bc it was so good. Wish all ICAs/grocery stores had a proper delikatess. The stores closest to me barely have a delikatess, and the selection is so meh. If they don't have picksalami it's no good LOL
We Swedes would often have smörgåstårta for celebrations, school graduations and confirmations. You have a ton of variations, everything from seafood to meat, you can make it a couple of days ahead and decorate it on the celebration day. It´s so yummy :) I prefer to do my own but you can buy quality ones at a patisserie or regular ones in in a grocery store sometimes. You should definitely try a couple in different flavors.
Homemade is always best🤤 Never seen this before now! I heard of it… Also in Tull program (borderguards) Today it popped up in my feed! Have actually forgotten all about it - I must say IM TOTALLY IN!!!! 😋🤤 Maybe we should import that dish here in Denmark ?🤷🏼♂️ Danes would Love it💯 I was in Helsingborg this wedensday with my dad - We had fish’n chips, not Long walk north from sundbusserne ! 😋
@@emmagunnerblad6264 Asked my daughter after watching the video, She went ew 😝 Im very sure my son-in-law would Love it!!! 💯 I might have to smuggle one out of Sweden… 😜
And pizza to i guess? But sandwich cake is frome Sweden and pizza frome Italy .Sima is frome Finland and i would'nt write that we have that to .. please!
@@michaelhammar2778 all they said was they have those cakes there too, jesus christ you make it a bigger deal than what it is lol, you forget finland have lots of swedish influence since WAAAY back, just like sweden have finnish influences too from pretty much same time
@@OlafPawbelt Oh please shut up! What' s wrong with commenting on something you obviously does'n't know anything about.Fact is that many finns are ignorant and thinking that its finnish thing .The finnish influence in Sweden is very insignificant !
Smörgåstårta is one of the best things out there, when done right. There are so many variants of it though, I personally have never had this version. I think my older sister makes the best ones and she crushes either "cheese doodles" or "cheez balls", and put it on the outside before putting on the cold cuts. And the cold cuts are individual, you can either do this with salmon, or with smoked ham, or roast beef, rolled up slices of cheese, tomatoes, whatever. Anything you like can go on there, just make sure it marries well in flavors. When you come visit Sweden, make sure you try a piece! Store-bought can be fine, but honestly, the homemade ones are almost always the best.
Gunnar Sjödahl lives in Östersund and has worked as a pastry chef most of his life. He was an apprentice at a pastry shop in Härnösand when one day in 1965 he got an idea for a new type of dish that he started experimenting with. When he finished his five-year apprenticeship, he moved to Östersund and started working at Wedemark's pastry shop. There he launched his project - the Swedish sandwich cake.
Smörgåstårta is kind of Swedens unofficial national dish! My mom has a special recipe with I do quite often. I have a container with the mix you have in the middle in the fridge (my mix is mayonnaise, crème-fraishe cucumber, apple, leek and canned tuna) then I can assemble a sandwich when I want to. Most of the time I don’t garnish it but sometimes I do and then I take kind of what I have at home. Salad, cucumbers, eggs, salmon, prawns. You can buy smörgåstårta att most Swedish supermarkets and versions of a smörgåstårta, like räkmackor and so on. Are available at a lot of bakeries/lunch restaurants Smörgåstårta. Is something we often serve when we host bigger parties like birthdays, graduation, studenten and so on. There is actually a movie about a man who arranged to make the worlds longest Smörgåstårta. The movie is called Tårtgeneralen (the cake-general) For a great and not overly expensive experience of the Swedish smörgårdsbord. Book a trip on any of the faeries going between Stockholm and Helsinki (Finland) on bird they have amazing smörgårdsbord. And there’s a lot of fun things to do onboard and you get to see the Swedish archipelago
If you haven't tasted crayfish, I suggest you try to get yourself invited to a Swedish crayfish party! They typically happen somewhere between the second half of August to mid-October. You will - put the whole crayfish in your mouth to suck some juice out of it - Meticulously remove the shell, - Eat some as they are - Put a bunch of them on a slice of warm toasted bread, and have some mayonnaise on it. - Drink beer - Drink snaps, shots of traditional flavored scandinavian spirits like Östgöta Sädes, Hallands Fläder, Porsbrännvis, Bäska Droppar (it means bitter drops, this is an acquired taste), and many others. - Sing traditional Swedish drinking songs, the lyrics are mostly about getting drunk and misbehaving - Wear silly hats - Have LOTS of fun!
If you place those bread squares exactly the same, they will separate because the cracks will be in the same location. By overlapping it will hold together. Professional cakes are made from one piece of bread per layer, round or square, and the size depends on how many people the cake is for.
It's supposed to soak into the bread, it's what makes the Smörgåstårta juicy and creamy. If you like leeks, you can swap the red onions for that instead.
When it comes to Swedish sandwich cake, you can do whatever you like! Bread, Fillings, toppings... just go nuts. Just let the cake set for a while before you put topping on it. I once ordered a SWC for 12 people for my birthday at this amazing cafe we have in town, and they made the most beautiful cake ever. It weigh 22 pounds and was large as f... Tasted amazing! Be safe
I know that caterers offer Sandwich cake when catering weddings, funerals, parties and so on, but in my family we always make them ourselves. You can find pieces of sandwuch cake, just as you can find pieces of princess cake in larger stores, and I presume most bakeries can offer them, but sandwich cake isn't usually a restaurant food.
You never getting tierd of smörgåstårta. If you haven´t tried it you miss out on something really speciall. There is speciall places that speciallize doing them. Also many supermarkets do them or some older typy of caffee´s called Konditori
I have eaten smörgåstårta on basically every larger family gathering here in Finland, and last year I decided to try to make my own. It turned out delicious! I didn't use shrimp though, I went for a more salmon-based smörgåstårta. I highly recommend trying to make one! And the bread edges that you cut off: soak them in garlic oil for a couple of hours and then roast them in the oven. They become yummy snacks 😋
It is so incredibly good!! We used to have it on festive occasions. In Sweden you can find it in many delicatessens or if you want it really fancy you can order it in such shops or catering. Try it, it will exceed your expectations.
@@Skege1000 it's herritage is from sweden, look it up. But we both share pretty much a lot of things with eachother so we influence eachother, ignore michael, she is just angry for no reason. I bet she is fråm skåne = fake sweden
The best thing with "smörgåstårta" is that YOU make with stuff YOU enjoy. It is your cake!! Use bread of your choise. Make/use spreads to your taste. As many layer as you like. After a night in the fridge: whisk philadelfiacheese and a bit of creme fraiche (season if you want to, salt and peppar) til its nice and fluffy- makes it easy to spread all over the cake. Now you decorate just as much or little as you like. Remember: it is you cake so you make it to your taste!!! You can buy this form of cake in every food store or bakery. They will all be diffrent.
This is my favorite food in the whole world. I have it every birthday of mine, and like to get it more often to! Some resturants serve it, depend on the style of resturants ofc, but if you get it at a resturant you don't get a whole cake, you get a square slice. Many supermarkets make em too, like inhouse, not from factory, usually quite pricey, you can order them between 4 to 20 slice size. The 20 slize sizes are BIG cakes, you order them usually atleast 2 days before (Since it needs atleast 1 night to set too), but shrimp shouldn't be served for too long either, so they usually are always made the day before serving, never earlier or later.
ICA is one of the biggest foodchains oin Sweden and most ICA stores sell smörgåstårta. In many of them you can even buy just one piece for one person. Or a big one for 12-16 people. It is a sswedish invention and I can´t imagine why the world hasn´t taken it to their hearts a long time ago. I think it´s super delicious and I sometimes make one myself for family and friends.
After scrolling through some comments I realised that roastbeef-smörgåstårta is my favourite, but I do actually like almost all of them. Just a nice thing to eat. And as some people have mentioned, yes it gets even better two days after it was made.
Many stores also sell "landgångsbröd" (pier bread) which is used for building smörgåstårta. It's just normal toast bread but it's cut along the length instead. You get fewer seems when assembling the cake then. Smörgåstårta is sold in most larger supermarkets. I believe there is a good chance to find some at any month of the year.
The best smörgåstårta (except for home made ones obviously) is sold at, in my opinion, bake shops. Shrimp have more pronounced legs, while prawns have legs that are almost undetectable. Prawns also have claws on three of their five pairs of legs, while shrimp only have claws on two of their five pairs of legs. In addition, prawns have a longer thorax and a smaller abdomen in comparison to shrimp.
Bigger ordinary grocery stores usually sell them so they are not difficult to find here. Also bakeries might make them on order, but they are very expensive which is why they are also often made at home. And they come with a bit of variations for the ingredients both inside and on it, so yes you absolutely don't need to get raw onion in your sandwich cake if you don't like it.
a lot of supermarkets sell sandiwsh cakes where you can buy whole cakes or slices. If you're going to stockholm Hötorgshallen got a few stands that sell them by the slice too. Smörgostårta can be expensive so be preperad for that!
Grocery stores in Sweden usually have them but in a smaller size (good for 2-3 people). They come in variants with meat (roast beef, smoked ham, brie cheese etc.), and one which is seafood based (with smoked salmon, shrimp etc.) If you need a bigger size smörgåstårta they're made to order with a minimum of 7-8 pieces/slices.
You can buy smörgåstårta at your local food store as well as make them at home. The ones that you make yourself tastes better. You can also go to a confectionery and order one, and theese tastes amazing! They come in lots of different variations like ham and cheese etcetera
Yeah dont like eggs (have no problems withthem in recepies just dont like boiled eggs) and slightly alergic towards seafoods like shrip and crayfish - but cheese and ham or salmanon cakes exsists so it is usaly not a problem.
Wait a minute, never had crayfish?! It might be time for you to research "Kräftskiva". It's like the most swedish tradition we got after midsommar/midsummer. :D Make a video reacting to Kräftskiva please. :)
Smörgåstårta is most often ordered by catering for birthdays, graduation or similar events. It can have other ingredients than shown in the clip, but usually it's delicious
There's a restaurant called "Vardagslyx", (everyday luxuary translated), in the city of Örnsköldsvik in Sweden. Who specializes in slices of Smörgåstårta, and they are glorious!
I make one a few times a year. Smörgåstårta is also perfekt for days you missed lunch and also need a fika. Most cafés has smörgåstårta. With seafood, meat or just with veggies. You can order a whole or buy a prefered pice. If you want a whole, tip, order days before.
I love to have white wine to my smörgåstårta. You can get smörgåstårta in so many places if you don’t want to make it yourself. Usually they have small portions in the large food stores, but you can also order it so that they make it according to your taste and the size of your party.
Love to see my country through your eyes. Smörgåstårta is super popular and common. You can easy both buy them and make them. Every bakery, coffee shop of bigger size, big food store have them.
Well sorted grocery stores makes them and sell. Tastes really good with a cup of tea. Then there is "landgångar" also wich are like rectangle shaped sandwiches.
A lot of different varieties on ingredients for smörgåstårta, in our family we do spinach and smoked salmon filling with a bread that is a mix between white bread and whole wheat bread, with mayonnaise of course and decorations is tomatoes, cucumber, sallad, lemon, shrimps, caviar and egg (bolied lagom).
You can buy them in most places, you can order them at many large supermarkets like ICA, Hemköp or Coop with a day or two advance, or if you go to a specialty bakery shop they might be able to make one within an hour. Since they perish in 2-3 days even refrigerated, and you can't freeze them, you will almost never find one pre-made to buy right off.
Almost all supermarkets sell smörgåstårta in small portions. If you have a party, or something to celebrate, you can order a big smörgåstårta a few days in advance. For 6, 8,12 or whatever number of persons. Ideally, if you are 6 persons, you order for 12. And eat leftovers the day after. A smörgåstårta is better the day after. And is unlikely to last any longer. Smörgåstårta is the ultimate lunch box food. There are three main types of smörgåstårta, seafood, meat and vegetarian. Smörgåstårta is a bit expensive, so you can save a bunch by making one yourself. But it is not a small project.
The best part of Scandinavian Sandwich cakes are the variety! They can be - anything - ! Fish, red and white meats, game, vegetables/fruits or the mix of these! They can be more or less cheesy. Ceram cheese, hard cheese.. Wetter or drier.. White, dark, special (as long as it's fluffy/soft!) breads.. You name it!
This recipe did not use "landgångsbröd" translated "gangway bread". It is the same type of bread but longer. That way you can alternate the direction you lay them down and have the cake stay together better, sort of like bricks. Also it often has a layer of a darker type of bread.
We have this tradition (as I guess many familys worldwide do, so not that unique) that the birthday"child" gets to dictate what we eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The ONLY thing my sons (14 and 18) wants is this. I really do think we could skip presents as long as they get to eat this. They would kick my arse if I didn't do this for them on their birthday. HOWEVER! Doing this for 12-15 people, seeing thait contains; praws, crayfish, gravlax/smoked salmon, fishroe, dried ham etc. etc. It's not the cheapest stuff around. But it is soo good 🙂
Smörgåstårta is very much up to your liking how you do it. There is the most common i would say which is with egg, shrimp and smoked salmon. You can make one with cold cuts like ham, roastbeef. Some have a paste made of liver some dont. It's basically just stacked white bread with some kind of mayonnaise based spread and then what ever filling you want in between and topped with a ton of amazing toppings like meats, seafood, fish and fruits and the best part about it is if you get leftovers it's even better the next day.
They are common as "celbratory foods" and are usually served as lunch at a birthday party or at the workplace if your employer wants to celebrate something. You can usually order in bakeries or larger grocery stores, but I would recommend going to a good bakery. It might be hard to get just one serving tho, they are usually sold whole. So get a bunch of friends over and have one! And as stated, they are very versatile, can be made with cold cuts of meats and can easily be made vegetarian or vegan. I like the onion as the sharpness cuts the fattiness of the mayo but you can vary toppings and fillings a lot. Would recommend a ham filling with a bit of horseradish myself!
You can get it at most grocery stores or some bakeries. We Swedes have it for graduations and bigger celebrations mostly in the summer but it is available all year around in many forms and fillings variety. There are thus that are based in hame and have tropical fruits. There are those with Italian style with airdry hame and more Mediterranean fillings. Most of the ingredients you will find in the bigger grocery stores, some older recipes are mostly cand stuff that are mixed together with fresh veggies as garnish. All of them are made with bread/cake Bottoms and have lots of mayo, wiped cream, and soft cheese layers with different toppings and filling mixes. I think it got popular because it is easy to prep before a party and you could fead many with the cake. It was a staple both my grandmothers made just as often as there was regular kake. It also often shows up when there is a wake or after a funeral get-together.
My favourite sandwich cake is made with cured salmon and prawns in the layers. And whipped cream, some mayo and mix with a lot of grated horseradish. Then spread out the cream in between on the layers and on the top. Garnished with plenty of prawns, topped with dill, cucumber, egg- and lemon slices. I make the cake myself. 😋😋
They do vary in quality, so get a piece from a known good bakery, not a supermarket. Raw onion gets mild in the mix, the over night thing does it, you will love it.
Lokal bakeries can sometimes sell Smörgåstårta. You can have a Smörgåståra in the frige 3-4 days. With every day the flavor gets richer and richer. A 2 day old Smörgåstårta tastes the best imo.
There are versions based on whipped cream and horse radish, others full of tuna and creme fraiche. Every ingredient is 100% optional and as long as you can make the case that it LOOKS like some kind of cake and has enough sandwich-y ingredients you get the smörgåstårta stamp. Heck, make 2+ open-faced sandwiches, stack them and call it smörgåstårta. As long as you TRY make it tasty, it is actually hard to completely fail.
This days I would say you pre-order them from a bakery if you want to have cake for a party taking place at lunch-time. The reason you pre-order them is because they need to set in the refrigurator. I would argue overnight is even a bit tight. If the bread soakes up the filling it staays together better, and you dont want to have dry bread in it when you eat it. Basically this i a cake that gets better with time. Running joke is it is a kake for "gubbar" (mature old men) so it is more common if you are celebrating an old-ish man. But also as I stated previously, this is a combination of lunch and cake, sop if you hare hosting a party at lunch-time this is an option to serving lunch with cake as an desert.
You can basically buy smörgåstårta at any Cafe in Sweden and I think almost every Swede can make it for you if you ask. There are also versions of smörgåstårta that are cooked, obviously with slightly different ingredients (melted cheese, ham, salami etc.) but that's more of a modern interpretation of it.
Looooove a good smörgåstårta!!! You can find them in good cafés or in assorted stores. And yes, it's a lot of mayonnaise 😅 and it's not uncommon to also decorate with cheese, ham and grapes to name a few. Other variations of smörgåstårta is tuna, roast beef or veggie.
Smörgåstårta is a very practical and nice way to serve many guests at a cetrtain occasion. It’s very filling (all the mayo!) so you don’t have to serve huge pieces. At times it has been considered as slightly boring and old fashioned - but it always bounces back on to our plates, somehow.😊 To be honest I think I’ve only had it 5-6 times in my life. And I’m almost old enough to be your mum. 👵The last time was at my own mum’s funeral. When I thought of what to serve the guests ”Smörgåstårta” immediately came to mind. And I preordered it from a local supermarket (who has a bakery). Expensive, yes, but convenient. I’ve never made one myself. Ps. It’s, actually, rather nice to have a cup of tea to go with it (depending a bit on which type of filling you use). Otherwise, beer or white wine are the most common alcoholic beverages you have with the Smörgåstårta. Coffe is for regular cake, in my opinion.🎂☕️
Like others have said, there are hundreds of variants as you can exchange ingredients and theme (more seafood or more meat or both?). Smörgåstårta is glorious, though. It's elaborate enough to be festive, and "foody" enough to be enjoyed with good conscience (in contrast to a sugar-laden regular cake). It's best enjoyed together with a lager or perhaps a dry white wine.
i make those for my birthday every year. so tasty. you can buy them at most grocerystores( whole cake) and cafes. another sandwish you should look into trying is räkmacka
They are sold pretty much everywhere, in grocery stores, in cafes, even some bakeries have them, catering stores have them for sure. However, there are a thousand different variations so you can't dismiss them if you don't like the first one you taste. The one made here looked damn good and is one of the more classic ones. Swedes love onions, we have onions in everything, both raw and not raw. So you will have problems if you don't like onion, note though that it is red onion that is used here, it is almost always used raw, it tastes quite different from yellow onion, I would almost describe it as having a bit of an apple taste. Very typical food when, for example, your employer offers food when something special has happened, someone retires, the holidays begin, or the company has made a good quarter. But also very typical to have when you invite large groups of friends, acquaintances and friends, think baptisms, funerals, birthday parties with many guests. They can be made iprincip any size.
I live in Guthenburg, we have fresh shrimps/prawns and our smörgåstårta is the best. You can buy it in stores. There are many diferent ones, some have cheese and ham or rostbeef and potatoesallad. You have to taste one. Ilove to have mine with chrimps and crabsallat some tuna and eggs. Where I live we have several fantastic places to buy smörgåstårta. They are expensive but if you are doing it yourself it wont be much cheeper.
(S) - There are thousands of variations "Sandwich cake" everyone has their preferences! But the "Smörgåstårtan" must be in a class with "smörgårdsbord" and Meatballs. The "sandwich cake" can be served at funerals and weddings and everything in between. Uniquely!
Smörgåstårta is glorious, and so customizable! Don't like seafood? Make one with egg salad or ham salad instead. Vegetarian? Just add different vegetarian friendly fillings and toppings. Lactose intolerant? Use lactose free options. Gluten intolerance/allergy? Use gluten free bread. Don't like mayo? Use cream cheese or Swedish "mjukost" instead. Want to make it more healthy or lower GI? Use whole grain bread or protein bread instead of white bread. There's honestly a smörgåstårta for most palates and dietary needs/preferences. It's so festive and great option for feeding many people during some celebration or gathering. Seriously, more countries need to try Smörgåstårta XD Smörgåstårta can be made at home, but it can be more difficult than it looks when it comes to making it look good. A lot of people will pick up Smörgåstårta from a bakery or café or the bakery section of grocery stores. There's usually some standard smaller ones available to just pick up, and you can also pre-order if wanting a larger and/or customized smörgåstårta. A café in my town makes smörgåstårta to order, and they're absolutely amazing! I'm not even a huge fan of Smörgåstårta a lot of the time as I don't eat fish and I'm not a big fan of seafood (except for shrimp) and definitely don't eat any kind of caviar or fish roe (which is common toppings and in fillings on many smörgåstårta).
Most well stocked stores probably carry 1-2 portion pieces, I know my local ICA does. And most bigger ICAs (and I assume other bigger stores that have delis) you can order them. They also come in a variety of flavors, seafood like this one. Roastbeef, italian meats and sausages... The list goes on
A well made smörgåstårta is such a guilty pleasure. It's rich, savory and just.. It's fantastic. If you go to Sweden, just Google where you can get the best smörgåstårta close by. A local bakery is usually your best bet. Sometimes supermarkets like Ica, Hemköp or Coop make their own inhouse and they're usually really solid.
If there's anything you really have to taste here on earth, it's sandwich cake It's a delicacy and you can have meatballs roast beef you can have prawns you can mix everything however you want whatever you like it's the best
Fun fact... Originally, Smörgåstårta is a dish from France, but it has been elevated and developed to what it is now over here in Sweden. :P And do not worry about if you can buy it when you visit. :P They're sold in most bigger stores in the delicacy dapartment, either small sized or portioned out to one size. If you wish to get a bigger one for like 10+ people you usually have to order it in advance. :)
You can get a smörgåstårta at most cafes all over Sweden. At ICA and coop if they have deli counters. Ask any swede about it, and they'll tell you where their favourite place. Also, it has to set overnight, or the bread will be dry.
They are Delicious, with loads of shrimps, salmon, egg, dill and cheese etc. My ex who was American could have stayed in Sweden simply for those. 😄 After a couple of days in the fridge they are at their peak of yumminess 😋👍
the core of a sandwich cake is mayo and high fat content fermented milk product (sour cream, creme freche) and bread. the rest is up to you what you want to put in. they key part is that the bread needs to be moist. some will spay lemon juice over the bread to make it proper soak it in and be moist
15 years after Gunnar Sjödahl launched his idea, he won a prize for Sweden's best sandwich cake. Over the years, he has appeared in several magazines and television programs about cooking.
I don't think I've been to many funerals where they didn't serve smörgåstårta, followed by prinsesstårta (and since I have a huge amount of older relatives I have been to many many funerals). It is also quite common to have a layer of some kind of liver paté...ish, and ham. Homemade smörgåstårta is sooo good.
There are 1000+ ways to make sandwich cake and you can buy it from any bakery for a party or as a fika. I prefer pear cider as a side beverage, but tea or coffee would do fine too, even beer. A layer of liverpaste + chewed cucumber (Boston gurka/chopped pickled cucumbar) is often a taste divider. Personally I prefer making dill chips dip, and spread across a layer and cover it with slices of smoked ham. Another layer is usually mimosa sallad (grapes, pineapple, cherrys, mango, apricot, melon etc. in mayo/cream). Then all the shrimps on top, then add jigsawed tomatoes, cheese, salami, lemon spiraled on toothpicks. Chopping the shrimps (prawns is just bigger shrimps) is unneccessary, same goe with the (hard but, not too hard -boiled 7-8 minutes, lagom!)eggs, egghalves is enough.
I make sandwich cake for every birthday. In Sweden even kids often prefer this over a regular cake. You make the bread with the filling one day before so the bread get moist and tasty from the fillings. THAT is what makes a sandwich cake amazing in it's taste. If you would make it the same day as you are going to eat it it becomes more like a normal sandwich in it's texture and taste and that is not to recommend.
You can buy it, used to get one from a really nice place where a large cake cost like 700-800sek, so ~100kr per person. Most common is a roast beef or salmon/shrimp one.
In sweden they eat loads of crayfish😋Like small lobsters🤤 Tradition is one Schnaps(2cl)Per crayfish! People gets hammered by crayfish😃 Filling up the rim of your plate! These crayfish are delicious!!!
You can have whatever you like in a smörgåstårta… fruit, seafood, eggs, sallad, tuna, - you combine your own is always the best And have it in refridge over night makes the taste more intense
You can buy it in almost any little grocerie store. The quality differs, and usually there are not a lot of different tastes to choose from. Sometimes it is just too much mayo. But all in all, yes, you can get a hold of it ready made almost everywhere in this long country of ours. They are usually either fish/seafood or meat, and of course there are all kinds of vegetarian and vegan versions nowadays. I really like the smoked fish ones, but usually I make that myself since it is not as common to find in the store. Now, in terms of it being unique, it depends how you look at it. And if it’s really just a swedish thing, well that too is up for debate. I would say that the sandwich kingdom is in Danmark. They are experts at creating the most delicious sandwiches I have ever tasted. But in Norway, Sweden and Finland different sandwich variations are really common. Wraps is not a new thing for us, but we usually call it ”klämma” in swedish. We have ”landgångar”, something also very common in the other countries bordering to Sweden. We have so many different types of bread, and my lord both Danmark and Finland makes the most delicious dark rye bread ever. So, so, so good. There are many different ways to make this, and when I was a kid my grandmother would not go heavy on the mayonaise and whipped cream (we didn’t have Creme fraiche back then). Rather she would mix fish, meats, veggies etc with butter to make a spread between the layers. And she would not use the type of white bread shown in this video, but a more sturdy dark bread with rye in it. But yeah, if you never had one you really should try to get one or make one.
also, sandwich cake can be made in many different ways, it doesn't have to have the ingredients shown in this video
You can find this cake in supermarkets, cafés… like everywhere
Hard boiled egg
love the meat version. ham, roastbeef, chicken sometimes, with horseraddish cream, and so on. sooo yummy!
I once had a meat version where the main star of the show was a layer of ground up beef jerky in rydbergs chicken/curry baguettesallad
Sounds insane but the tiny chunks of beef jerky just elevated the entire thing and left me enjoying the aftertaste for a while
Think its fair to say that 99% of all Swedes had one for their birthday or at a birthday celebration. Its just one of those standard things along with prinsesstårta; princess cake. 🙂 You could definitely make one on your own. Just pick whatever you like & assemble!
That's what I love about Smörgåstårta, you can make it your own with whatever you find tasty! 😛

Birthdays, funerals, and all sorts of occations! Perfect and very appreciated! 😋😋

And don't forget the mayo. 😊
You can buy it at normal grocery stores, if they have cakes, they'll sell smårgåstårta too.
Oh yeh for sure. Our Kvantum has this, but not cakes. Its just such a normal thing for everyone to have. Hahhahaa
2-4 piece cakes or so yes, larger made to order.
Homemade is always best🤤

Jätteintressant, och så förvånande att den inte är äldre än från 1965. Yngre än mig m a o 😄
Are available at a lot of bakeries/lunch restaurants
Smörgåstårta. Is something we often serve when we host bigger parties like birthdays, graduation, studenten and so on. There is actually a movie about a man who arranged to make the worlds longest Smörgåstårta. The movie is called Tårtgeneralen (the cake-general)
For a great and not overly expensive experience of the Swedish smörgårdsbord.
You will
- put the whole crayfish in your mouth to suck some juice out of it
- Meticulously remove the shell,
- Eat some as they are
- Put a bunch of them on a slice of warm toasted bread, and have some mayonnaise on it.
- Drink beer
- Drink snaps, shots of traditional flavored scandinavian spirits like Östgöta Sädes, Hallands Fläder, Porsbrännvis, Bäska Droppar (it means bitter drops, this is an acquired taste), and many others.
- Sing traditional Swedish drinking songs, the lyrics are mostly about getting drunk and misbehaving
- Wear silly hats
- Have LOTS of fun!
Or make a layer with paté and pickles instead of crayfish and onions.
should definitely rest for 24h , mums
In Finland we call it "voileipäkakku".
When it comes to Swedish sandwich cake, you can do whatever you like!
Bread, Fillings, toppings... just go nuts.
Just let the cake set for a while before you put topping on it.

Smörgåstårta is very practical, you make it the day before the event and it tastes so good.
Great ideas with the crumbs!
I worked as a baker a few years ago, I think I've maid at least 100-200 of them. Never got tired of making or eating them 🤤
It is so incredibly good!! We used to have it on festive occasions. In Sweden you can find it in many delicatessens or if you want it really fancy you can order it in such shops or catering. Try it, it will exceed your expectations.
We have that in Finland too. You can make that with coldcuts too. I just found a recipe for Sushi sandwichcake 😄

Smörgåstårta is the best thing in the world. It's pretty much available in every grocery store and bakery.

a lot of supermarkets sell sandiwsh cakes where you can buy whole cakes or slices. If you're going to stockholm Hötorgshallen got a few stands that sell them by the slice too. Smörgostårta can be expensive so be preperad for that!
Grocery stores in Sweden usually have them but in a smaller size (good for 2-3 people). They come in variants with meat (roast beef, smoked ham, brie cheese etc.), and one which is seafood based (with smoked salmon, shrimp etc.)
If you need a bigger size smörgåstårta they're made to order with a minimum of 7-8 pieces/slices.
You can buy smörgåstårta at your local food store as well as make them at home. The ones that you make yourself tastes better. You can also go to a confectionery and order one, and theese tastes amazing! They come in lots of different variations like ham and cheese etcetera

There is a lot of different kind of smörgåstårtor, my family have our own recipe. Some have a ham filling for example.
Yeah dont like eggs (have no problems withthem in recepies just dont like boiled eggs) and slightly alergic towards seafoods like shrip and crayfish - but cheese and ham or salmanon cakes exsists so it is usaly not a problem.

Smörgåstårta is most often ordered by catering for birthdays, graduation or similar events. It can have other ingredients than shown in the clip, but usually it's delicious
sandwich cake is so good
There's a restaurant called "Vardagslyx", (everyday luxuary translated), in the city of Örnsköldsvik in Sweden.
This is one of my favorite Swedish dishes. There are many versions nowadays and family recipes.
I make my eggsallad that goes inside with curry powder 😁 and the outside is mayonnaise mixed with whipped cream for mine 👍 Its so good! 💜
The best part of Scandinavian Sandwich cakes are the variety! They can be - anything - ! Fish, red and white meats, game, vegetables/fruits or the mix of these! They can be more or less cheesy. This recipe did not use "landgångsbröd" translated "gangway bread". It is the same type of bread but longer. That way you can alternate the direction you lay them down and have the cake stay together better, sort of like bricks. Also it often has a layer of a darker type of bread.
Hero sandwich is the closest to landgångsbröd ;)

We make in Finland also this
They do vary in quality, so get a piece from a known good bakery, not a supermarket.
Any large supermarket with a Deli you can purchase a Smörgåstårta, but of course, the home made one are the best. They carry love with them.

Smörgåstårta is just awesome to lunch a summerday celebrating something
Sandwich cake (Smörgåstårta) was very popular and trendy in the 1970s. In the 80s, it disappeared from our menus. Today it's starting to come back.
Sandwich cake IS sold here, but mostly during summer, as it's often a tradition for Midsummer celebration.
Seriously, more countries need to try Smörgåstårta XD
Smörgåstårta can be made at home, but it can be more difficult than it looks when it comes to making it look good.
Sandwichcakes are common in Finland also. It’s the ”must” of all weddings, birtdays (adults) and many graduation partys.
Smörgåstårta is so damn delicious. I know Estonia has it just like they have swedish "Semla" ... the smörgåstårta there is called võileivatort
In Finland, we call it voileipäkakku.
For sure, the big food stores always have smörgåstårta you can buy 😊
Salty pies and sandwich cakes are top tier foods whenever, wherever!
And do not worry about if you can buy it when you visit.
Its so good. I do one to my sonś birthday next week. The sekret is the filling , Mayo and solur cream( not so match of mayonas.😊❤
In sweden they eat loads of crayfish😋Like small lobsters🤤
Tradition is one Schnaps(2cl)Per crayfish!
People gets hammered by crayfish😃
Filling up the rim of your plate!
These crayfish are delicious!!!
You can have whatever you like in a smörgåstårta… fruit, seafood, eggs, sallad, tuna, - you combine your own is always the best
And have it in refridge over night makes the taste more intense
You’re in for a treat even though this is a somewhat simple variation. 👌👌👌
Apple grated in creme fraiche , smoked ham and "only" some fresh vegetables on top is my version.
I love it! Very tasteful if well done!
