The best thing about this dish is that you can change up the filling to your liking. At one of my kids baptism party I served 2 different kinds of smörgåstårta. One had filling that contained rotisserie chicken, mango and curry powder. That was yummy!!! The other one had ham, cheese and some other cold cuts. No leverpastej if I remember correctly. When someone buys smörgåstårta for fika at work it's a great day. Sure you can make it yourself but 9 times out of 10 that will not taste as good as a professional smörgåstårta made thousands of times.
I'm a bit late to the comment section but I do a smörgåstårta every year for my birthday, mostly because I just want one and need to find a reason for it. :P But my fav way of doing it is with shredded chicken filling, using a bit of madras curry flavors and ofc cream/mayo. (and I sometimes add just a little hot sauce to it as well) For my second layer I go for something like a leek and egg mix, it goes well with the chicken and madras flavors imo. For decorations I like to go with roast beef slices, cheese, tomatoes and roasted onion. It's all about experimenting with what you like in the end. I hope this inspires you to try out different versions in the future. :)
if it helps dont think of it as a sandwich cake, but as a cake-sandwich! its not that different from a danish smorrebröd. I think alot people are a bit put off cause they focus to much on the word cake. In the 18th century there were savoury ice cream. Today that just sounds disgusting. i think it COULD be because we have a prejudice based on the word (as well as used to certain foods and combinations/textures etc). yes i know , you didnt just write it off from the name alone. Good on you for trying it! If its not for you its not for you.
"Sandwich put on steroids..." LOVED that. It is, as said, fairly similar to your sandwiches if you remove "the steroids". :-D Tbh. I'm not that found of Smörgåstårta my self, i'd eat it if it's served but might not buy a whole one to bring back home or even a piece at a café because then there is a whole lot of other things I'd rather pay for, a british styled sandwich for example or a Kanelbulle (ofc). Oh, and a great tip is to eat Smörgåstårta the day after it's made and not "fridge cold" (kylskåpskall). Great job on the filling, next up: "home made meatballs and "brunsås". :-D
I prefer leverpastej on a sandwich topped with some slices of saltgurka. Anyhow, kudos to you for trying smörgåstårta and, honestly, I think you can live a good life in Sweden without it.
There is a million ways of doing sandwich cake. The one I make has no liverpastej or whipped cream and mine has 3 layers. I made one that looked like a dragon. And dont feed ducks bread.
you're right Hanna, you can certainly customise it to suit your own preferences! felt like on this ooccassion, since I was doing it on the internet, I needed to represent the recipe properly though and follow how its traditionally done. but love the idea of making one that looks like a dragon! and just to be clear, the feeing the ducks part was only a joke, promise! thanks for watching :)

The smörgåstårta is just like an amazing sandwich that you can share with everyone. I make my own with very different fillings and ingredients. Love to have something savoury and sour. Then I like to top it with grapes which is amazing as a sweet note to it all.

Good job! Kul att du gjorde den själv!! 😁 The prawns need to be fresh, ooor peeled by you. Those squishy pre-peeled prawns are never very nice :) you should visit a nice restaurant and order a Toast Skagern :)))
BTW- if you wanna learn to maybe appreciate leverpastej a bit more, put it on a darker bread (Lingongrova) and put saltgurka on top of the pastej. Delicious!
Great job making the sandwiches. My aunt makes them in Finland..too over there they are called voileipäkakku. Its made for parties and special occasions, very similar fillings and decor to the ones in Sweden. They are even made in Mexico they are called Sandwichones made in parts of Mexico specially for Easter. I grew up eating those flavors, So I am ok eating it. Some of the flavors such as the liver paste, the dill, and etc might be different for people that are not used to eating that. One challenge met.
I think some foreigners focus too much on the word "cake" and how it's a cake that is not sweet. That way the savoury taste won't match with the expectation and it'll just be weird. Most swedes prolly think of it as a litte more fancy and enjoyable than a simple sandwich. You should not give up on it just yet ;D As others have said, put in the stuff you like next time. Personally I think "varmrökt" salmon is much tastier than "kallrökt/gravad/rimmad", and should be in the filling, decorate with shrimp. Especially if you're not a big fan of fish. A for effort on making your own sandwich cake though! 🎈
thanks!! I thought I'd give it a try and get to grips with the core components of this Swedish classic! but you're right, the cake part is definitely something that confuses a lot of us internationals until you really get to grips with the concept.

I love sandwich cake, it's great for a lot of occasions like summer parties or the most stereotypical occasion a funeral. I haven't seen one with leverpastej or one with salmon on though, usually the ones I have eaten are topped with salad, shrimp and ham.
First of all: thank you for your videos, they are fun and very well made! But. Could you pleeeease get over the “cake” thing? *Nobody* exchanges a cake for a smörgåstårta, just as nobody would exchange a crab cake for a sponge cake. It’s just a name. Or do you think anybody believes there are actual toads in Toad in a hole, or runs away to the doctor if he has a Spotted dick? No? I rest my case. 😊

I'm glad you enjoy the videos. And I promise, I'll be dropping the cake part now ;)
Whatever smörgåstårta you make, you need grapes on top! And smörgåstårta with leverpastej needs to have a lot of smörgåsgurka in the pastej mix! 😋 You need a little sweet taste, it will change everything!

I don't think I've ever had smörgåstårta with whipped cream on. Eww. Next time try without that and also with stuff you like on it. There's so many different ways to make them.
you haven't Sanna? interesting! we followed a recipe we found online that claimed to be a "classical Swedish smörgåstårta" and it was really well rated by people that had tried it. wasn't against the cream though I have to say, that was quite yummy! but I'll definitely try switching up the recipe next time, this time I just tried to follow the traditional preferences so that people would know I'd given it a fair shot!
@@JustaBritAbroad No, I grew up with my mom's whipped cream free smörgåstårta haha. And the ones I've bought in the grocery store hasn't had any either. I didn't even know that was a thing 😆
Next challenge is the varm smörgåstårta. 😋 And no, there is no warm shrimp or leverpastej involved. (Eww!) It's bacon, cheese, tomatos. Basically it's a layered toast cake. Look it up.
As I see it smörgåstårta is the rational version of the Danish smörrebröd, faster and easier to make and serve to many guests. A small sandwich or three different small sandwiches, that looked fancy somehow, like smörrebröd was a pretty common first dish, entre? at dinner parties, sort of a condensed smörgåsbord. Myself I am not that found of smörgåstårta, messy and a lot of mayonnais, not my thing. But quite practical at times and looks festive, and usually some kind of real tårta, sweet cake, is served after as a dessert, or perhaps fine cookies.
Yes, there are many varieties and I guess we all have our favorite smörgåstårta. I’m impressed! You made two yourself! Well done! Looks delicious! Having smörgåstårta is really fulfilling. I can hardly move if I eat too much and I never learn, so I do eat too much lol. Ooo well done in decorating both! Your girlfriend is a pro! Thanks for sharing a very interesting and amusing video👍👍👍🌸🌼
They are also very common. They tend to have a little more eggs and cheese to make up for the meat. Both cream cheese as filling and slices of cheese rolled into little cones as decor. Maybe deviled eggs on top. Avocado mash in between some of the layers. There is also vegan versions, of course. I have never tried one but I'm sure they are good.
dunno grandmas just made it for every occasion and i loved it 😆 .. its like a shrimp sandwich with mayo etc .. cucumber etc .. i just never got into sweet cakes properly, maybe that's why 🤔
I think It's really good to be honest. It's a party food. But it's not dessert. Its more like a big hunk of food that can be conveniently self served by guests.
Wow, im actualy impressed, by your skills in the kitchen. A smörgåstårta is a way to make a big sandwich (like a cake) that others can take there own bit. There is some standard rules/fashions, shrimp and salmon is the moste common. ( egg goes to shrimps and fish) Ham and liverpate is another. (Chees goes to that) But you can do a meatball and red beet sallad smörgåstårta altso.. its still a big sandwich as a cake that people can take there own bit of! Surprice, surprice, there is always a smörgåstårta for everyone, soo for a brit abroad, I present the roastbeef and horseradisch smörgåstårta! It goes whit other radish, cucumbers, lettuce and mayby some chees on top!
haha thanks Stig! that's the first and last time I'm getting that compliment so I'm going to enjoy it whilst it lasts😉 I like the sound of that meatball variety though! and as you say, once you get away from the standard favourites, you can really take the dish wherever you want to, which is fun!
The best thing about smörgåstårta is that it has endless possibilities. I dont like gravad lax or leverpastej myself. A couple of years ago I made a veggie version with gurksallad in it and it was delicious.
Oh dear there are so many different recipes for smörgåstårta. And as many have said before the best thing about making it your self is that you can make it any way you want. Me personally tant them wit everything, both fish and meat in the same one but I also always want one neutral filling.
Ok leverpastej is what i grew up with, so this is my recepie for a nice snack before you go to bed. Take some Vasa humans put butter leverpastej and cheese on it. NEXT part make Oboy choclate drink but make it warm. Now put the sandwich into the warm choclate and eat it. Was my goto snack before bed when i grow up😊
I think the name itself creates confusion and mistrust, it's really just a sandwich with several layers of bread and generously with different toppings including a hefty dose of mayonnaise, described as such, it should be something that most people like. And one of the charms is that you choose which toppings you like and think fit together, if you do not like liver pate you of course take something else, I usually use soft cheese with reindeer meat instead of liver pate
very good point, that can definitely be the case! but you're right, its a super versatile concept, its just to find the version that works best for you🤗
@@JustaBritAbroad Good to hear!☺️🦆 Btw, I think you can use cream cheese (like Philadelphia) as a filling in sandwich cake. Maybe you’d like that better?🤔😁 Have a nice weekend!
Also a tip if you ever make a smörgåstårta again. Use a bottle of water, with your thumb over the opening, to spray a very small amount of water over each layer of bread. It helps the cake set better. Also, I recommend making the cake the day before and decorating the cake before serving.
Dont make smörgåstårta at home unless you are a chef or pro on cold buffet. Its expensive but much better to buy it, and its therefore mostly served at very special occasions/celebrations.
good point! I just thought I should try the traditional recipe if I was going to do it on a video, otherwise how could I expect people to take my reaction seriously😅
Jag äter inte heller räkor (eller andra skaldjur) men räkorna är inte råa. Dom är kokta. Om dom var råa så skulle dom vara gråblåa och nästan halvgenomskinliga. 😜
I did a smörgåstårta for my mums 70th in the uk and it it went down amazing! We had plenty of mini pizza, pork pie and chicken wings left over afterwards. I mean pate - Is that so strange?
oh you did? fun!! did you put mini pizza and pork pie on the smörgåstårta though?! with chicken wings😱😱😳 wow!! yeahhh I don't really like pate, hence my apprehension I guess! but next time I'll be trying a recipe based on ingredients that I really enjoy!
Best way is to realy think those stuffings you realy like and make the stuffings out of those. If i make only to myself then i make stuffing and just put it betveen two breads and eat on just it it from the bowl with bread and tea. Even thou i am heavy coffee drinker somehove i rather take tea with the cake if i eat it in home. But if i am in some party or etc. then i take coffee. Funny to think that how i operate in different situations and places differently but that´s how it goes for me 😁.
Never seen the point of them to be honest. Just throw ham, cheese, mayo' and maybe some cucumber on two slices of bread (or 3 if you feel like being different) and et voila! If I'm at a party and someone's bought one, I'll usually pick off the stuff I don't like - shrimp, prawns, fresh salmon etc (I only eat John West salmon from a tin! 😆), eat the bits I do like - eggs, tomato's liver paste 😜etc, then eat the bread part last as it's usually sweetened bread like the Yank's have and just puts me off the rest of it as a whole! I love liver paste. Usually have it on dry toast triangles (xmas dinner) or I'll buy a packet of TUC crackers (or similar) and just spread and eat until the tub's empty! I mean, let's face it, nobody would eat 90% of anything if they knew how it was made! 😊
you've been converted to the liver paste Dano?!😱 now that was a shock to read!! but you're right, its certainly one of those things where its best *not* to know what's gone inside!

Some Smörgåstårtor is really not that nice. Some are pretty okay and some are Lovely! So it all comes down to how it's made and the ingredients. That is maybe one good, and one not so good, side of Smörgåstårta: No one is the other one alike.
i think making your own sanwich cake for the first time when u never had it before is a mistake. cause all food should be experienced first , from someone that is skilled in making it from practice. that way you know what its "supposed" to taste like, before deciding if you dont like it as a concept. Especially with something as left field as a smorgåstårta. like, im a swede and i wouldnt try to make some obscure chinese food made from duck feet or whatever, cause ive never had it. and im a chef :). because not everything can be taken from a written down recepie, or even a turorial. you need a barometer for the flavor to begin with - which comes from tasting it before you make it. and perhaps trying different versions. Also, why do you put things on there that you DONT like , that doesnt make much sense to me LOL. a sandwich cake can have ALOT of different toppings. it doesnt have to be sea food. I mean its not going to stop tasting of shrimp or leverpastej cause u made it into a cake :) . What did you expect would happen hahahah I dont think there is anyone in sweden that like smörgås tårta that like every kind of smörgås tårta. i dont like all burgers or pizzas (curry, banana....pineapple). There are vegan sandwich cakes, and sea food free ones etc etc. Sooooo many things. Common denominators are often mayo and white bread and some sort of salad leaf. if you dont like those , you might have a harder time.
well I tried it from a bakery once before, so I thought this time I should try and make it myself to understand what goes into the making of this dish :) like a homage to the tradition!

Anyhow, kudos to you for trying smörgåstårta and, honestly, I think you can live a good life in Sweden without it.
yeah thast to kill for
There is a million ways of doing sandwich cake.
@@JustaBritAbroad Most often the cake is filled the day before and left in the fridge to moisten. You should try different ones from bakeries, they often have smörgåsbakelse which is small one.
The smörgåstårta is just like an amazing sandwich that you can share with everyone. I make my own with very different fillings and ingredients. Love to have something savoury and sour. Then I like to top it with grapes which is amazing as a sweet note to it all.
I am drooling now. Gonna make that for myself this weekend.
haha fun!! which variety will you be making Jan?
@@JustaBritAbroad I will do a seafood one but I will change the prawns to hand peeled and one layer should be räkost på tub. also lots more dill and some caviar (not kaviar) as well
Bra jobbat! :)

Good job! Kul att du gjorde den själv!! 😁 The prawns need to be fresh, ooor peeled by you. Those squishy pre-peeled prawns are never very nice :) you should visit a nice restaurant and order a Toast Skagern :)))
tack så jättemycket Cat! bra tips om räkorna då, hade inte tänkt på påverkan det kan ha! har provat toast skagern ett par gånger då, yum!
never ever use prepeeled prawns
BTW- if you wanna learn to maybe appreciate leverpastej a bit more, put it on a darker bread (Lingongrova) and put saltgurka on top of the pastej. Delicious!
Actually took me many years to learn to appreciate smörgåstårta, and I am born and raised.
oh it did? I guess its one of those very acquired taste dishes that once you learn to love it, you're addicted!
I have 2 you can do, 1 seafood cake and one meat, 1, Seafood, in bottom ägg, next layer shrimps, crabfish, dill, lemon, little tomate past, mayo and gräddfil, next layer tuna whis red shopped onion and lemon pepper little mayo , mix mayo, dill and lemon and put on the whole cake like cream put in refriater to next day, take it out and decorate, whid sallad, shrimps , sammon and eggs whid kaviar on, dill, tomato, cocumber and lemon can also have little red shopped onion... 2 meat in bottom cheese and ham, next layer mix rostbiff, mayo, dry onion remolad, next layer leverpastej wjid boston cocumber , mayo. then cover the whole cake whid mayo or mix whid gräddfil. next day decorate whid sallasd rostbiff, dry onion, remouladsås, tpmatp, cocumber paprika and orange
I love sandwich cake, it's great for a lot of occasions like summer parties or the most stereotypical occasion a funeral. I haven't seen one with leverpastej or one with salmon on though, usually the ones I have eaten are topped with salad, shrimp and ham.
never seen one with Salmon? I'm surprised!! what's your favourite sandwich cake though out of interest?
@@JustaBritAbroad ham, shrimp, cucumber, lettuce, lemon slices, mayo It's the only type I've tried and seen.
sorry Vera! actually thought I'd played down the whole cake thing this time around😅 didnt really want to focus on that part this time around. so my bad if it didn't really feel like that as the case! all fair points though, and thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. And I promise, I'll be dropping the cake part now ;)
@@JustaBritAbroad Det är lugnt, ser fram emot nästa video!
Whatever smörgåstårta you make, you need grapes on top! And smörgåstårta with leverpastej needs to have a lot of smörgåsgurka in the pastej mix! 😋
You need a little sweet taste, it will change everything!
oh god, I have been craving this for years and this video didn't help. 🤤Wonder what the family will say if I suggest Smörgåstårta on christmas eve rather than julbord.....or what about a christmas themed Smörgåstårta?! 🤩
haha do it!! you should give it a try and see what the reaction is like😉 but a Christmas themed one could be really revolutionary!!
hmm you could try it at christmass day
No hate. It's a bit funny when a Brit says leverpastej is wierd when The Brits have things like marmite, spam, haggis, etc. But i get it when People are raised with certain foods it just becomes the normal. Like your vids. Glad to have you here
Haha can agree with you there! Funnily enough, I don’t want to eat any of those things you mentioned either, really not good😅 but you’re right, it certainly makes a difference based on what you’re used to and what you grow up with. Thanks for stopping by though. Cool to hear you enjoy the videos!
And no, there is no warm shrimp or leverpastej involved. (Eww!)
It's bacon, cheese, tomatos.
Grab a beer and smörgåstårta a beautiful warm day and enjoy it outside
Yes, there are many varieties and I guess we all have our favorite smörgåstårta. I’m impressed! You made two yourself! Well done! Looks delicious! Having smörgåstårta is really fulfilling. I can hardly move if I eat too much and I never learn, so I do eat too much lol. Ooo well done in decorating both! Your girlfriend is a pro! Thanks for sharing a very interesting and amusing video👍👍👍🌸🌼
You did good, even though you missed out on the tuna-mayo blend. Good job trying new stuff! /Catta
Thanks Catta! perhaps tuna-mayo will have to be my next combo then :) happy weekend!
I think I'll have to try making a vegetarian version of this. 😂
They are also very common. They tend to have a little more eggs and cheese to make up for the meat. Both cream cheese as filling and slices of cheese rolled into little cones as decor. Maybe deviled eggs on top. Avocado mash in between some of the layers. There is also vegan versions, of course. I have never tried one but I'm sure they are good.
sandwich cake is the best thing ever! .. id eat it breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday!
you would? different variations or are there a couple of classics you like to do everytime?
dunno grandmas just made it for every occasion and i loved it 😆 .. its like a shrimp sandwich with mayo etc .. cucumber etc ..
i just never got into sweet cakes properly, maybe that's why 🤔
I think It's really good to be honest. It's a party food. But it's not dessert. Its more like a big hunk of food that can be conveniently self served by guests.
Wow, im actualy impressed, by your skills in the kitchen.
A smörgåstårta is a way to make a big sandwich (like a cake) that others can take there own bit.
There is some standard rules/fashions, shrimp and salmon is the moste common. ( egg goes to shrimps and fish)
Ham and liverpate is another. (Chees goes to that)
But you can do a meatball and red beet sallad smörgåstårta altso.. its still a big sandwich as a cake that people can take there own bit of!
A couple of years ago I made a veggie version with gurksallad in it and it was delicious.
you're right Jenny, its very versatile that's for sure! I've had a couple of good vegetarian ones, I must say!
Oh dear there are so many different recipes for smörgåstårta. And as many have said before the best thing about making it your self is that you can make it any way you want. Me personally tant them wit everything, both fish and meat in the same one but I also always want one neutral filling.
I always use a filling of avocado/mayonnaise and canned tuna and mayonnaise - yummy 😋
😣😣🙈🙈NO NO NO… You have to have it sittning in the Fridge 2-3 days before You eat it
so long?! I've heard people say like a day after, but 2-3 days to set? interesting!

Was my goto snack before bed when i grow up😊
Smörgåstårta with seafood is usually just a multi-layered räksmörgås where I'm from. De-Li-Cious! :D
oh it is? wow, what a party!
Well, i think you were brave who tried it and well i think you did pretty well.
I think the name itself creates confusion and mistrust, it's really just a sandwich with several layers of bread and generously with different toppings including a hefty dose of mayonnaise, described as such, it should be something that most people like.
And one of the charms is that you choose which toppings you like and think fit together, if you do not like liver pate you of course take something else, I usually use soft cheese with reindeer meat instead of liver pate
very good point, that can definitely be the case! but you're right, its a super versatile concept, its just to find the version that works best for you🤗
You must try Landgång another smörgås like danish smörrebröd, make agoogle on it
ooh I've not heard of that Lars-Åke! might have to look into it. thanks for the heads up!
next make a traditional PANNKAKS TÅRTA!!!! (pancake cake)

@@JustaBritAbroad Good to hear!☺️🦆
Btw, I think you can use cream cheese (like Philadelphia) as a filling in sandwich cake. Maybe you’d like that better?🤔😁
Have a nice weekend!
I love liver pate, but I hate it in smörgåstårta. For the meaty smörgåstårta I prefer to use a layer with some blue cheese.
Have you tried Pitepalt? If not, you definitely should :)
i sure have!! and kroppkakor!! they're really tasty :)
Well, mainly people put things they like on their Smörgåstårta, when it is homemade.

Leverpastej är en gudagåva. 😋
Leverpastej is sold as Brussels Pate in the U.K.
yes, you're right Robert! hadn't thought about that before. though personally, I dont like that either haha
You forgot the tangerines on top!
The sur in Surströmming is pronounced suer, which means sour in Swedish.

hahaha I didn't even realise I'd sniffed it until I watched that part back in the edit Johanna haha. Thanks though!! what should I try next?
Oh, definitely a traditional julbord with aaaaall the weird stuff included!! :D

That is maybe one good, and one not so good, side of Smörgåstårta:
No one is the other one alike.
i think making your own sanwich cake for the first time when u never had it before is a mistake. cause all food should be experienced first , from someone that is skilled in making it from practice. that way you know what its "supposed" to taste like, before deciding if you dont like it as a concept.
What did you expect would happen hahahah
I dont think there is anyone in sweden that like smörgås tårta that like every kind of smörgås tårta. i dont like all burgers or pizzas (curry, banana....pineapple).
There are vegan sandwich cakes, and sea food free ones etc etc. Sooooo many things. Common denominators are often mayo and white bread and some sort of salad leaf. if you dont like those , you might have a harder time.
No it is sushi whit beef
So you are doing it by yourself for the first time to make a judge on the dish!
well I tried it from a bakery once before, so I thought this time I should try and make it myself to understand what goes into the making of this dish :) like a homage to the tradition!
you shouls not do the whole cake in one dat, do the bottom and let the come together and next day do decorate
Although I commend the TH-camrs who cook and try stuff. I feel really sorry for you. A well made well tried recipe executed by someone who makes them good is a whole different experience. Since you live here find a friend who is good at making them and try. Or buy one from a good bakery. Seeing you make the liver pate one made me as a home cook cringe.
Nice try, maybe not trying to make it yourself the next time :)
