Damn, now I really want some smörgåstårta. A bit of a tip: we usually make the layers of bread alot thinner, that way the fillings soak through the bread and it gets really juicy and yummy!

As a Swede I say: MUCH too thick bread slices. More layers of goodness needed! Your decorations were quite on point though, but you should cover your cake much more - the glue of choice that sticks the good stuff onto the cake shouldn't be seen at all.
Also, everyone makes it their own style. My mum's got a dill chili shrimp/mayo layer, a ham/canned fruit layer, and a liver pate /relish layer. Garnish with shrimp, salmon, cucumber, tomatoes, salad and lemon slices. Many people use roast beef and peas - I think it's rather disgusting though.

Im from Sweden and this is my absolute favorite food off all time. If you havent tried it you are missing something and as the lads say you can make it however you want it. In Sweden you can have it like a greek, Italian, American or pretty much whatever style you want.
My personal favorite is with shrimps, gooda cheese and ham amd it is fabulous.

I love smörgåstårta/sandwichcake, so freaking good. It has been said befor but it can be said again, the bread layers were to thick. They should be thinner so it really can soak up the yummy stuff from the filling. Also a tip, sandwichcakes are always tastier the day after they were made, because then the bread has had time to really suck up flavours from the filling. Most people do the cake the day before the day of eating it.

Ben, this cake has to much bred in it. thinner bred for more layers. And never had one with cream cheese, we usually use a mix of mayo and sourcream. At least that is how it is done in my family and the ones we buy in the supermarkets.

Good job! It looks amazing! I work part time at a bakery where Im not baking the bread but making sandwiches and these kinds of sandwich cakes to be sold in local supermarkets. You guys did a really fancy one! The ones we do have two kinds of fillings, one made with whipped cream, hard boiled eggs and caviar, and one made with mayo, ham, pickles and mustard. The garnishing is very simple; cucumbers all around the sides, then lettuce around the edges on top, wedges of eggs, rolls of cheese and ham, tomato wedges and then either shrimps or roast beaf, topped with cucumber and lemon. These are the standard ones but we also make a fancier one to a special shop and it looks more like the one you made! We use frozen dill or parsley to coat the sides as it actually sticks better than fresh one does.

I was looking for comments like "That's not how you do a real sandwich cake" but I could not find that many of those.
Two things I noticed though was first of all that the bread was cut pretty thick, wich is not usually how it's made(And the bread are traditionally just wheat bread).
Second thing is that(From *my* experience): The most common frosting is just whipped cream, or together with mayonnaise!
    Cheers!

There's something similar in Québec (Canada). It's called "Pain sandwich" (litterally Sandwich bread) and it's served during Christmas time. Usually, there's a layer of egg salad, one of ham salad and one of chicken salad. it's covered in cream cheese and decorated with vegetables.

A lot of Swedish people here saying this isn't very accurate or isn't even "how you do it"... honestly, it looks amazing. And I like this version as well. Why not? You guys take a recipe and make it your own, so go ahead! As a Swede, this looks gorgeous. THis kind of cake isn't my thing.. it's SO heavy with all the mayo and what not XD. But yes, in Sweden we use thinner bread and we top it off a lot with salmon, shrimp, egg, dill etc.
But love how you did it! Awsome job and I look forward to see more food as usual!

2:05 - "Make sure that loaf of bread is unsliced. You will encounter problems if it's a sliced loaf of bread."
No, that's exactly what they're getting wrong. Just buy sliced bread, cut off the crust of each slice, and use several slices for each layer. They should have done this themselves, because they ended up with layers of bead that are twice as thick as they should be.

Seriously though, seeing food that is so standard and, to some degree, boring to me being cooked by "foreigners" with so much passion really shines a new light on it and lets me see everything that's unique and amazing about our cuisine. The fillings sounded lovely, but a tip is to slice the bread thinner or it will be very dry, thinner slices will help the fillings make the bread juicer. Often you do a smörgåstårta the day or night before and then put it in the fridge so that the bread has a chance to get juicy (soggy sounds so negative). Best bit :)

@@luigicadorna8644 I'd say it kinda depends on the type and amount of the filling you use. I think these guys were a bit more generous with the "frosting". And this isn't the way it's more typically presented, at least not in my experience. What I am used to have the top layer exposed, e.g. no bread and "frosting" on top as the Sorted guys are doing in this vid to make it look more like a "real" cake. 😁

I worked with making sandwich cakes, they come in other flavours too. We used presliced white bread, remove the crust and then make the cake square by overlapping the bread with each layer . We used to make 3 layers and also store it over night to become most before we fully frosted it and decorated. Frosting we used cream cheese, mayo and some whipped cream. My favourite is Club sandwich and the full hog.

  • @msvsvi

As a Swede I must say that this was a very unconventional take on the classic swedish party dish, much like their take on swedish meatballs back in 2012.
For all the non-Swedes: Sandwich cakes are still a massive thing here in Sweden, although not as popular as back in the days when every housewife did her own version. Still every bakery, restaurant and supermarket has their own take on the dish and there are lots of modern varieties, such as vegetarian, roastbeef, mediterranean and ham & cheese. My mother does a killer sandwish cake with tuna, eggs and lots of vegetables.
I've never heard of anyone using cream cheese. It's usually mayo or a mixture of mayo and sour cream.
There is also a hot, oven baked, version with egg and dill mayo, bacon sauce and with tomato and cheese on top.

As a Swede: This is a "Smörgåstårta" (Sandwich cake). It is quite common to have those at different occasions/parties when you want to feed people at a party, but it is not necessarily in place to make them diner. They are usually served around lunch or in the afternoon.
This one, though it has all the very traditional flavours, seems much more tasty than the ones you ate likely to encounter if you get one in Sweden.

I love sandwich cakes. not fish ones though, but with ham spread. And I use sliced bread and cut the crust and assemble the squares to form layers of rectangles, like you would a biscuit cake (you do eat that in US/UK right?). and then it really really has to sit under a slight pressure (e.g. plate) in fridge overnight so that the bread would absorb all the yumminess and not be that dry. oh and sometimes i alter white bread layers with whole wheat bread layers for extra texture.

Start of the bread is a Swedish flatbread called Hönö, it's light and sweet. The filling is a tuna and sour cream mix with some other stuff I don't remember. The "frosting" is liver pate mixed with cream and top it of with ham, meatballs, shrimp, boiled eggs and a tomato cut like a rose and some dill.

It is nice to have some dill, salmon, shrimps in the filling. You can also have a meat-version with ham, liver paste, reindeersteake and so on. It is also nice to make it with only veggies, eggs and cheese.

This would fit right in with any cookbook from the 1950's. It would be somewhere between the Ham and Banana Hollandaise and the Tuna and Jell-o Pie.

Typical 70s in Sweden, meanwhile the rest of the world is still going: Sandwich cake? What do you mean?"

  • @EkwyFields
    @EkwyFields 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Yesssss. Honestly, I cannot understand people who do not think that looks amazing. Having not-Swedish friends, they look at the glory of a smörgåstårta and think that's disgusting, and I can't see WHY. It's just a prettified, cake-sized sandwich, guys! Why act like it's somehow blasphemy? (And yes. We do sell them ready-made in shops, too. But this one looks nicer.)
Also, you can make it with pre-sliced bread, but then put lots of slices together and build the layers that way. Totally doable. I know because I've done it.

I can't stand watching Ben throw things at the sides of cake anymore lol...if you cover the sides in icing and not the top of the cake, you can roll the sides of the cake in whatever you want and then do the icing on the top after!

One twist is to make a cake with sauce bolognese and shredded cheese in one layer, and a thick ham-cheese-sour cream and shredded cheese as a second. Top it with one of the two sauces, sliced tomatoes, olives, basil leaves and some more shredded cheese. Bake it in the oven until warm and golden.
You can use pre sliced bread. Just cut the edges off and put it together with no edges above any other.

Smörgåstårta, Sandwich cake is the best! You can vary it so much, my favourite is with ham and bell pepper filling and a layer with pickles and other stuff. :) In our family we usually make a rectangular shaped cake, not a round one, and then we wet the sandwich layers with some milk, so that the cake is not so dry when you're eating it. :)

Smörgåstårta is just about the best f-ing thing in the world😍😍 though I usually make it with one layer créme fraiche and finely chopped ham, one layer with finely chopped bell peppers and cream cheese, one layer of finely chopped pickles and liver paté mixed with a little mayo, and then the "cream" is mayo mixed with créme fraiche, then you garnish with a ton of shrimp, cucumber, sliced eggs and some dill. SO good!

Well done, boys! As a card carrying Swede, I'm happy to tell you that you did a great job with one of our strangest culinary national treasures (apart from the fermented herring, of course).
In Sweden, you can actually buy loaves that are pre-sliced length-wise, just for the purpose of making smörgåstårta (sandwich cake). And, Jamie, there are versions of smörgåstårta with roast beef and other cold cuts. ^_^

Preferably the cake should actually sit a bit in the fridge so that the creamy layers sink in to the bread a bit more. Also, that was far too thick pieces of bread for a sandwich cake (smörgåstårta). But all in all very fun to see a Swedish recipe!
