Chisel box build with hidden magnetic latch

  • The chisel box has been done for a while now but I finally got the video complete! The box is made of figured maple featuring a floating cedar floor with wenge plugs and accents. The hinges are solid brass. Neodymium magnets have been embedded under both wenge accents to create an invisible magnetic latch. Magnets have also been embedded (from the under side) in each chisel slot that holds each chisel in its place. The finish is three coats of clear shellac and one coat of buffed out wax.

The music aside, the work you do is nothing short of perfection. I truly enjoyed watching you build this absolutely gorgeous box. I see that you have not posted anymore videos since this one. Now, I just found your channel and fell in love with your craftsmanship right away. I go to check all your other stuff in hopes of getting more of a good thing just to find the cupboard was bare. I really really hope that all the negative feedback in regards to the audio selection on your last video didn't sour you on sharing more of your beautiful craftsmanship with us. I think when it comes to the canned B.S. music that is on offer at present, it's sometimes better to just have the natural shop noises playing. The work will speak for its self. I really do hope we see more of your talents very soon. Take care and I will be watching for you to post new content soon. Thank you again for such nice work.

Lovely build, wonderful craftsmanship. I've had something similar in mind. Think I might do a dovetail box and make the chisel tray so that it is either removable so it can be brought to my bench or rotate with perhaps a wooden hinge around the bottom so that the tray stands up at an angle.
Really inspiring work (I too found the music a distraction, but from reading the comments you've had plenty of that feedback!).
Thanks for uploading & look forward to the next one.

Wonderful design ideas. Love the use of Wenge on the flame maple as accents and reinforcers for the joints. The magnets hidden under the Wenge pieces is also very clever. Thanks for the inspiration.

Many years ago my shop teacher was adamant that anyone using the shop should remove all jewellry from their hands and either roll up their sleeves or have short sleeve shirts on. Still makes sense. Very nice project, its timely since I want to make tool boxes. Be safe.

Thanks for the inspiration. I've been looking for a chisel box design as a basic guide. Got some 1/4 sawn maple boards just waiting for this - (centre stock remnants of baseball bat blanks that I came across) & may work in some roasted maple & walnut rather than wenge. Want to use only hand tools but should be a most satisfying project. Many thanks again for your great video & stunning craftsmanship. Keep 'em coming!
