      HD is out of a lot of things in my area for some reason. I need to replace the box that has the conduit that enters the bottom. Biggest problem is they glued the conduit to the box. Trying to figure out a remedy

    • @justinwinkler450
      @justinwinkler450 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can cut the conduit in 2 separate places, AFTER YOU MAKE SURE THE BREAKER AND ALL POWER IS OFF. Pull new wire and glue pipe back together with a coupling. If you don't want to pull all new wire get junction box and splice the section of wire that you cut to a new piece of wire going to the outlet and then you're done.

      Do not be afraid. This is just an ordinary extension cord that people usually use during holiday seasons to decorate their yards. It just so happened that it magically buried it self under the ground and morphed into an electrical outlet. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • @bee2333
    @bee2333 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So basically you took an extension cord type spliced them on one outlet hardwired to the outdoor box and the other end wired to a plug? 🤔 im thinking about doing this

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well yes basically, but keep thinking about how to weatherproof and tamper proof (what if somebody digs into the cable etc). Also, make sure your circuit is protected with GFCI and/or have circuit breaker protection. If you are not familiar please hire electrician.

    Very unsafe in my opinion

  • @Shadi2
    @Shadi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My only concern is the wire not being in conduit until it's at a safe depth. it's too easy for a future owner to dig in that spot and have their tool cut into the wire. Non-Metallic safe depth is 18 inches, Metal Conduit is 6".

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my opinion there is no safe depth if you are using an excavator / backhoe to dig. If you are using a shovel, you can not even hurt the SOOW outer layer by jabbing it a few times. So it really depends on your tool. My cable on this project is literally 6 inches from the house and pool edges. If a future home owner uses a backhoe 6 inches away from home to dig, well that will be stupid in itself.

    • @Nick-bh1fy
      @Nick-bh1fy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Metal conduit shouldn’t really be buried underground it’s not meant for that

    • @jaydeedee1972
      @jaydeedee1972 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Per NEC, if you are burying UF cable it must be, at minimum, 24 inches and the cable must be in rigid conduit to depth of the trench at both the post and at the house. If you are using schedule 40 PVC it needs to be buried to 18 inches. If you are using rigid galvanized metal conduit it can be 6 inches in depth. Never use EMT for underground.
      The point of these depths is not to protect against a backhoe, but rather someone with a shovel.

    Interesting and thank you. You install the outlets then the wires.
    Many others connect the wires then install the outlets.
    And as others mentioned you need a GFCI somewhere in the power
    circuit to the install box since those are exterior and not GFCI.
    Your video was well shot. It could use more dialog and explanation.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right, everyone installing plug outdoor / exterior must use GFCI! My home is newly build in 2018, all my exterior outlets are connected to GFCI & Arc Fault circuit breakers. But I did not mention in my video. I will try to figure out how to add a caption / card in the video.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I hired my landscaper and paid his men $20 extra after he mowed my lawn to lay the cables down about 6 inch deep. They use this spade like shovel, they simply stab the grass and soil and peel it back a bit to lay the cable down. I believe it was about 60 feet of cable, so that is worth every penny.

Also can’t be subject to physical damage where it comes out of the ground over the concrete into the pvc. 400.12(7). Sorry! I’m not sure but you might’ve violated 400.12 (1) too lol.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they are buried only about 6 to 12 inch deep. I wish I had buried them deeper. I am using SOOW cable which has thick rubber coating ready for direct burial. Also want to make sure that the source output you are plugging into has either ground fault breaker / GFCI in case cable gets punctured in the future.

    Why did you leave the insulation on when connecting the two outlets? Underground with no conduit? Those outlets should be GFCI. You need to take a class in electrical wiring. Or pay up and hire an electrician.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure what you mean by leave insulation? I did not use conduit because I ran this cable 'alongside' my home (places where no heavy digging will take place). All my outdoor outlets are pre-protected by GFCI breakers directly from the my breaker panel (but good point bringing this up - I agree since this is outdoor need GFCI for sure).

    Highly illegal, against NEC codes, and would not recommend, but glad it worked out for you... Just make sure to rip it all out before selling your house.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Illegal is not correct, but I would like to put a DISCLAIMER: Do or follow at your own risk.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not trying to debate the right / wrong of the method. Just answering to the 'HIghly Illegal comment'. I live in Texas. The Texas property code does not require homeowner who does his/her own DIY to have to follow NEC. I am doing to my own home and I am NOT a professional. I am also a licensed TREC agent for more than 15 years, when you buy a used house in TX, it is usually as-is, the buyer is responsible to perform inspection.

    • @jonmccauley6490
      @jonmccauley6490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DIYGEEKTEXAS You are partially correct, but I am also an electrician. The fact that you wired in NM in a wet/damp location makes it illegal (NEC 334) and a hazardous situation to anyone who uses that plug. You also used an extension cable outdoors, then buried it exposed, then buried 120v too shallow. (NEC 300.5 and at least 2 others) Then used connectors that aren't outdoor rated.
      Anyways, like I said, glad it worked out for you. I'm all against big government being as I'm a Texan as well, however safety to others is still a concern. That's why I mentioned that I hope you remove this before selling the home regardless whether they have an inspector. Don't think for one minute that the next buyer can't sue you if they are seriously injured by it. I'd also recommend putting your disclaimer in the title description, again just to cover yourself.
      Or don't, it's up to you. Free will and all.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonmccauley6490 I agree with Jon. I have added disclaimer in description. "DISCLAIMER: Do at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage and/or injury.
      In this video I am using SOOW cable and my circuit break has GFCI protection built-in!
      "

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also want to mention, I am minimizing my risk by using SOOW cable, GFCI breaker and this cable is being ran right next to the house under a bed of bull rocks.
