- On 24-25-26 October 2020,
our team, Proteas - Thessaloniki Caving Club, organised an expedition to explore 3 very interesting caves on South Pindos.
The first cave was located on Itamos mountain and its called "Koudounotripa" ( Κουδουνότρυπα ).
Took its name from the sound (koudouno=bell + tripa=hole), when rocks are falling in sounds like a bell.
It was a 110 meters deep vertical cave.
Second cave was located on Koziakas mountain, and its called "Mpeh Cave" ( Σπηλιά του Μπέη ).
Entrance reach was easy, hiking into a beautiful forest. Mpeh cave has 2 big openings, entrance needs rope for safety, descending next to a small waterfall of 8 meters.
Third cave was located again on Koziakas mountain and its name is "Tripa Volioti" (Τρύπα Βολιώτη ).
Difficult reach of the entrance with 50 minutes off road driving and 2 hours of hiking on steep soil.
It was the first official record of exploring the whole cave till the bottom which revealed an around 90 meters vertical cave holding a glacier at its bottom, one of the few (4-5) in Greece, plus one of the southernmost of Europe.
A very important discovery.
