So much fun! Christopher Lee is always a treat to watch no matter what movie he is in! Also can't believe that a third nipple was actually a plot device in a movie but here we are. Roger Moore is excellent as Bond once again and that car jump moment (you know the one) was crazy!!!
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

Pretty much agree with everything you pointed out. I much prefer this on to LALD primarily because it's not a bloated Bond. It's a bit more streamlined which for me is always better, but Bond with Moore also became comic-book style Bonds of the '70s where I'm expecting the words BLAM! KONK! WHAMMO! to swipe the screen and he's unfortunately my least favorite Bond although I'm quite fond of the actor and 2 of his Bonds I put in the high grade Bonds.

Btw, Christopher Lee didn't just have a career as a Intelligence Officer for the Royal Air Force, he was also a personal association with the author of the James Bond franchise of novels--Ian Fleming. They were members of the same gentlemen's club (not _that_ kind) and used to play golf together.

Great review Ollie....some James Bond/The Man With The Golden Gun trivia facts for ya...
Hervé Villechaize (who played Nick Nack) would later play another famous character on the long running TV series 'Fantasy Island' (as 'Tattoo' where his catchphrase was "the plane, the plane!"...along side with Ricardo Montalbán as Mr. Roarke who was also Khan in Star Trek: TOS in the episode 'Space Seed' and again in the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan).
Soon-Taik Oh (who played Lieutenant Hip) is a martial arts actor who would later star in several movies with action superstar Chuck Norris (in the films 'Good Guys Wear Black', Missing In Action 2: The Beginning & The President's Man), he also was the voice of Fa Zhou in the Disney animated Mulan 1 & 2.
Maud Adams (who played Andrea Anders) has the distinction of being two Bond girls, she would later play the title character 'Octopussy' (1983) in the Bond film of the same name...and she would also appear as an extra, because she and her husband visited her former co-star & very close friend Roger Moore on the set (at the Fisherman's Wharf sequence in San Francisco) of 'A View To A Kill' (1985)...but good luck trying to spot her in the background in that crowd.
Christopher Lee, in addition to being Ian Flemings cousin, he also worked for British Intelligence during WWII. In an interview when asked about his job in WWII, he said "Can you keep a secret? Yeah? Well so can I?" and winked at the interviewer. Also during the filming of the "mano a mano"/face off sequence between himself and James Bond (Roger Moore), a bunch of real live bats flew out from the cave opening on the island, where as Christopher Lee shouted "Now not my children!", which the rest of the cast and crew burst out laughing in regards to his 'Dracula' reference. Christopher Lee would later play 'Count Dooku' in several 'Star Wars' films as well as 'Saruman' in 'The Lord Of The Rings' and 'Hobbit' trilogies.
This would be the last film produced by Harry Saltzman as he would run into serious financial troubles at the time where as he sold his shares of the James Bond franchise to his producing partner Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, who would producer the remainder of the Bond films until his death in 1996.
The book of which the film is based on was the very last James Bond novel written Ian Fleming that he was working on at the time of his death in 1963 and later published afterwards in 1965. The first draft and part of the editing process was completed before Fleming's death and the manuscript had passed through the hands of his copy editor, William Plomer, but it was not as polished as other Bond stories because much of the detail contained in the previous novels was missing, as this was often added by Fleming when writing second drafts of his novels....When it came time to filming the movie however, very little from the novel was actually used in the story/plot.
Originally this film was planned to be filmed in the middle east (Beirut, Iraq, Iran, etc) but due to the many heavy conflicts going on there in the part of the world at that time, the production shifted their sights onto Thailand instead. Although a sequence in the film is set in Beirut, it was never actually filmed there, instead it was shot in the safety of Pinewood Studios.
The island of where the climax of where 'Golden Gun' was filmed at is now a big tourist destination nowadays that people can visit (as it was just a film set in 1974), complete with a hotel, it is now referred to today as 'James Bond Island'.
The cowboy in the fun house is actually Roger Moore. The special effects crew was having trouble with their animatronic cowboy not working properly, so Roger personally volunteered to be the cowboy robotic mannequin (even duplicating the exact robotic movements) for those quick shots in order to keep the production running on time (instead of behind schedule which would then make the film go over budget).

Sir Christopher Lee was in more sword fights in his career than any other actor. He was a step-cousin to Ian Fleming, and may have been Fleming's inspiration for Bond. During World War Two, he achieved the rank of flight lieutenant. Because he could speak German, he was sent behind enemy lines on a mission, which Lee wasn't supposed to talk about due to the Official Secrets Act. As an actor, he played Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Count Dooku, and others. He recorded a heavy metal album when he was 80. What a life!

Long before Christopher Lee was Count Dooku or Saruman he was most famous for playing Dracula. For a whole generation he defined the representation of the character. In fact the reason Dooku is a count is in reference to the fact that everyone, over a certain age, would know him as Count Dracula at the time of the prequels.

I highly recommend you react to 'The Man who haunted himself', a spooky thriller with Roger Moore before he was bond and sporting a moustache.
Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are the UK's Master class vintage actors. You know Peter as Darth Vader's boss in a New Hope.
You should check out some Hammer Films with Christopher and Peter, eg Horror of Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein and their sequels. There are plenty of other films with these Legend in as they were the best of friends. Somtimes one of them would only accept a role because it meant working with the other.
The Devil Rides out has Christopher Lee as the good guy, Vs the Blofeld from Diamonds are forever. Wicked film.
Please check them out, readers too if you haven't, there's nothing quite like a Lee/Cushing Hammer Horror :)

Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming's cousin.
Scaramanga's Island called Phang Nga Bay in Thailand now called James Bond Islands
Lee traveling to LA had the golden gun confiscated by Customs
When Goodnight played Brit Ekland fell over when Scaramanga's Island explodes that was outtake kept in the movie.
Christopher Lee was considered by Ian Fleming to play Dr.No
Scaramanga was originally supposed to be played by Jack Palance.
TMWTGG was Ian Fleming's last Bond novel published after his death
The car jump done for real and done in one take by British driver "Bumps" Willard who never did it before.
TMWTGG was the last film to be co produced by Harry Salzman.
For me TMWTGG is one of Moore's weakest but not worst Bond film, Christopher Lee one of the best Bond Villains. Can't wait for you to watch The Spy Who Loved Me. Roger Moore's favourite and one the best Bond movies ever

People wondered if the Bond movies were ending after this one in 1974. Roger Moore did alright in Live and Let Die, but in this one he was still trying to channel Sean Connery. It was a weird mix of character-driven story (Scaramanga as the anti-Bond) and the usual explosive mayhem.
But every single Bond movie has its fans. All of them. Moore would make the role his own in the next film, The Spy Who Loved Me.

Definitely one of Moore's weaker entries, but it has easily one of the best villains the franchise ever had
For the usual foray of fun facts: Christopher Lee was actually Ian Fleming's cousin in real life.
Honestly the biggest crime with the movie is, as you said, Scaramanga is like a dark verison of Bond. The issue is the film does barely anything with that and instead focuses on martial arts fight-scenes and solar power conspiracies. Ideally this should've been a big cat-and-mouse story, with Scramanga hunting Bond while Bond is trying to stay two steps ahead of Scaramanga, while trying to catch him somehow. Even the idea of the big showdown being just the two of them trying to kill each other, the film needed more parts like that. Really, the issue is just one of missed opportunities.
Goodnight isn't an interesting or entertaining heroine, the plot is a convoluted mess, and while there's some good stunts, this film will never live down the slide-whistle that plays during that iconic car jump.
Add to that the really over-the-top racism (even for the 70s, Sheriff Pepper's lines were just plain racist), the weak jokes and the long runtime, and it really just boils down to being a clumsy film.
Of all Moore's movies, this is easily one of his weakest. Still worth a watch but definitely a stumble. Fortunately he had way more hits than misses. With 7 movies total, most agree he had about 3 flubs (but even then they have their fans). This was one of them. The upside is the next movie is considered one of Moore's best, as well as one of the best in the entire series. By the time I'm posting this you've no doubt seen it already, but it's just a great one.

Definitely one of my least fave Bonds but still has some good stuff. The car bridge jump is arguably still the greatest car stunt on film...shame about the terrible slide whistle sound effect tho. And Christopher Lee is always awesome in everything he's in. Fun to note that Roger Moore hated the bit pushing the kid off the boat. He became a UN Ambassador for UNICEF travelling the world raising awareness of children's rights and causes and always regretted his Bond doing that. Now, on to what many Inc. me consider peak Moore with the fantastic The Spy Who Loved Me. 😁

Not unlike how Lee was Tolkien's choice to play Gandalf, but Lee aged out of the role by the time the films were made. And he nearly ruins that awesome 360 degrees spin jump car stunt, which is so freaking cool it just barely manages to outcool the idiotic slide whistle sound effect. Kudos to the stunt team, a rough beating to whoever had the idea to bring the sheriff back and the sound effects crew.

I do really love the last act of this one, on the island. Perhaps not great overall, but still some memorable and fun moments… though for Moore, the best is yet to come, IMO!

I don't know if you want to know or not but you know when they did this movie they always have several singers that come up with a song for the opening and they always pick them just one out of whoever submits one of songs anyway Alice Cooper The rocker he did a Man with the Golden gun song also my understanding it almost got picked but it's on his muscle of Love album kind of a cool song to check it out

Moore's first two films cashed in on movie trends of the time. Blaxploitation in Live and Let Die and Kung Fu films in this film. It's the next film where Moore really found his footing. They tripled the budget and upped the spectacle. IMO, the next film is his best.

So much to talk about. After the unexpectedly huge success of Live and Let Die, they rushed out The Man With the Golden Gun to instantly capitalise on that success. Usually they released a Bond film at that time every two years but this one was released only a year after the previous one and there are parts of it that do feel rushed and under developed and I think that is probably why some people don't rate it that highly, also possibly the return of Sheriff J. W. Pepper. He's a character you either love or you hate. There's no middle ground. Personally, I prefer this movie to Diamonds Are Forever. Diamonds feels a little lazy by comparison and there are some real highlights in this film such as that amazing car stunt. Incidentally the stunt driver was awarded an on the spot bonus by the producers for performing the stunt in one take and for surviving I guess.
Personally, I prefer the book. There is some really cool stuff in the novel that they could have utilised in the movie and I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity as it would have made the film more interesting. The novel follows on directly from You Only Live Twice. Bond is captured and brainwashed then sent back to England to assassinate M. I think the climax is also better in the novel. Mary Goodnight is actually James Bond's secretary in the books. She's never been featured in the films before. She's also a lot more competent and efficient in the novels.
When Christopher Lee was lying in the bed and you compared him to a vampire / mummy. The defining roles of Christopher Lee's career were in the late 1950's when he played Count Dracula for the first time in 1958 and The Mummy a year later in the Hammer Films series. Christopher Lee actually played Dracula about 8 times in total. Lee also holds the record for the most on screen sword fights. He's really impressive in the very realistic and brawl-like sword fights in the Musketeer trilogy which he made in the 1970's. And yes, you're absolutely correct about his background. Christopher Lee is Ian Fleming's cousin, the creator of James Bond and they were both in intelligence together.
Finally, the martial art shown in the school sequence where the two men are fighting with two swords each is called Krabi Krabong, Thai sword fighting.
Looking forward to your review of The Spy Who Loved Me. That film is considered a Bond classic. No pressure then.

My second least fav Moore entry, A View to a Kill is the worst in my opinion, but this film is fun there's no denying that. Christopher Lee brings this film up by quite a lot.

Golden Gun is underrated.. the first act is classic Fleming influenced Eon Bond. Roger Moore is growing into the role nicely, Maud Adams is stunning, Christopher Lee is excellent and M even tells Q to "shut up" at one point. Weak points include the title song, a lazy Barry score and a lack of spectacular stunts (the car jump aside). The model work also starts to become prominent is the series from now all the way through to the 90's.

Yeah, this is my least favorite Moore Bond movie. It's still fun and has some good elements to it. Christopher Lee is definitely its biggest asset, but Britt Eklund as Goodnight is pretty bad, the action is mostly not memorable and the entire film just feels too sleazy and nasty to me. The entire Solex agitator plot line is completely shoehorned in for no good reason, the return of Sheriff J. W. Pepper makes less than 0 sense and overall the film just lacks the grandeur of a Bond adventure.
Btw, the sound effect for that amazing stunt was suggested by composer John Barry and to this day he says that it was his biggest mistake. The stunt is beloved by the fandom, while the sound effect is utterly hated by the fandom.

I'm sorry but I really did not like this movie. It's honestly my least favorite James Bond movie and one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I hate how painfully predictable it is and how awkward and silly it is.
