Huge Firefighter Axe Restoration

- Huge Firefighter axe restoration of a big old and raw rusty German metal cleaver. See me restore this tool and engrave some custom engraving work adding a burning skull to the face of the axe.
ABOUT THE FIREFIGHTER AXE
This Is a fine old German firefighter axe from Wiebelhaus in the heart of the Sauerland region of Germany. They have a long family history of making handcrafted tools. I bought this tool for around 30$ at an auction a few years back. Now it is time to restore this massive axe and make it beautiful again.
Did you know that a firefighter axe is one of the most common tools among firefighters. Firemen often use two kinds of axes, the flat head fire axe and the pick head fire axe, the one with a spike like this one I restore in the video. They often use them to gain entry thru a door, window or chop hole in a wall.
ABOUT THE AXE RESTORATION
I started by removing the handle from the axe. This handle is protected and secured with two irons which holds the axe handle steady on place and at the same time they protect the handle in rough use and abuse. I sandblasted the axe using aluminum oxide as my sandblasting material.
I grinded a new 40-degree angle edge. A firefighter axe doesn’t need to be super sharp - it just needs to be strong so it can break down doors, windows and walls during a fire.
I added a very cool laser engraving on the cheek of each side of the axe head. The motive for the laser engraving was a burning skull head. I couldn’t choose between a bright metal skull or a black metal skull so I did both! - so please tell me which one you like the most!
I gave the edge and the spike a quick polish. I grinded the axe handle in my homemade wood lathe and toned the wood darker. Finally, I put the axe together and I gave the handle some Nordic teak oil.
I am really satisfied with this restoration. I think this came out very good and the engravings make a rough feeling to this old German tool!

Joh. Wiebelhaus & Co from Meschede which is in the Sauerland area had made this axe and you can find his logo if you google for this term

That first hit will open a page with all the registered and used marks till they went bankrupt arount 1984 after roughly 70 years they had existed.
Next restoration: your vice
Ha ha ... 😅 👌
It's not that easy there very stubborn to fix
@@AwesomeRestorationsI feel your pain I tried to restore one at my school it was so bad not even the drill could get the screws
That would be talent, bet could
This is why I always come back. Not just because you still keep the original pieces, but you come up with creative ways when you don't have all the proper machinery. The DYI wood lathe is what impressed me more than the restoration.
thanks so much - glad you liked the lathe 😊👍
Stopped being an axe and is now art. Stunning
thanks so much

I concur
thank you so much 😊 have an awesome day
I love watching your videos after a 24 hour shift. It's calming.❤❤❤
I work in the rescue service
Glad you enjoy it!
31 years professional firefighter. Retired Captain. I never saw an axe so beautiful! That has some age to it for sure. The pointy end looks entirely different. Ours had more of a thick curved knife shape. This one has a medieval spike kind of thing. You did a great job! Regarding the etching: really nice and clean, but they both sort of look like stickers a teenage boy would put on his biology textbook. The skull ring on your index finger (on the right) is quite nice. Love your channel. One of your 5.46 million!
The "pointy end" is a pick... and it does not look medieval at all.
@@CandiceGoddard Yes, I know it's a pick. Thank you for "pointying" that out. My thought that it had a medieval look was purely subjective and does not require your approval. What are you, German?
thanks so much for your comment. 31 years - wow thats impressive 😊😮
@@fishpants3877 i like your response.
You have a bodacious set of skills and a really well equipped shop. I like the open skull the best. Great job
Thank you very much!... Yes the bright skull looks good on this Axe 🪓👌👌😉

My nephew, who is a firefighter, would love that. You do awesome work!!! as in the name!
thank you so much for your kind words 😊
Nice job, and I enjoyed the 'thunder storm' sound track. Yes, the vise needs to be the next project. Your reversible work bench is brilliant.
thanks a lot for watching I am glad you liked it 😊
Please keep the videos coming. Love the way you restore the items. Love the lighters as well. Thank you.
Thank you! Will do!😉👌
Hello everyone, The more experience a Mechanical Engineer has, the lower the cost. You work beautifully. Great job. A lot of effort has been put into this work. Another preserved work of art and history👍👍👍
Thank you very much for your kind words 😊

As a nephew of a firefighter, nice job sir. Greetings from Iceland
Thank you very much!
This came out amazing!!!
Awesome job!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! ❤❤
Amazing work. I preferred the 'clean' skull over the black skull, but they both added to the overall restoration.
thanks a lot glad you liked it 😊💀
Finally, a new metal restoration video with sandblasting and engraving. That makeshift lathe was also really cool.
thanks, I am glad you liked it 😊
Seeing you restore fire axes reminds me of 8 years ago as a child firefighter. But I think you do a good job of restoring fire axes!
thank you so much glad you liked it 😊
thank you so much for your comment. I am glad you liked it, I also like the white skull 💀👍
I saved this when the restoration notification came up as I wasn’t in a place to watch it (as I was driving). It got lost in my “to view list” But was uncovered today.
Such a great restoration. This time I prefer the bright metal skull and the handle turned out beautifully warm again the cold hard steel. 💙🩵
Glad you enjoyed it - many thanks for watching 😊😊
Wow, beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Sí, señor!!! Una obra de arte de un artista
Yep! Burning Skull 👌

I preferred the lighter engraving of the two, but they were both very acceptable. Outstanding!
thanks a lot glad you liked them 😊
That is an absolute thing of beauty. Excellent restoration job. I too chose the flaming skull option, very cool ;)
I prefer the silver skull as it stands out more.

thanks so much. Maybe a wolf next time 🐺
@@AwesomeRestorations Both are good choices. Are those sounds in the background real? They are very calming...
thank you so much for your comment and advice I really appreicate it 😊

thanks a lot for your comment 👍💀
Another beautiful restoration! I suspected you would go for a skull, but was thinking an animal like a wolf. No flames for a wolf, though.
thanks Jane glad you liked it, and yes I am a skull man but I also like animals very much 😊
The axe is beautiful. I like the light skull. I see lots of restorations, but not many with engraving skill. Well done. You have not had many new restores on Utube lately. 😢
thanks for watching I am glad you liked it. I uploaded a video 2 weeks ago but yes besides that it has been a while but now I am back :)

Beautiful work as always, congratulations Martin.
I'm missing the more complex restorations, but I'm very excited to see you breathing new life into machines that no longer work.
thanks a lot Manoel. Did you see the Buzz Lightyear video I uploaded a few weeks ago? That was complex because of all the parts 😊
WOW! Turned out amazing!

That looked so amazing.. Burning skull more looked liked skull with flying hairstyle. Jokes aside black engraving is lit 🔥🔥
thanks a lot. I can see what you mean about the hair 😂
I like how the flames were continued on the axe head. Handle looks like it's original and never been used. Awesome work
I am glad you liked the outcome I also think it turned out very nicely 😊
dentist!!!! this explains the aura of calm in monotonous actions😂😂 super! the ax after wax is cool! cool ingot of metal👍 there is something in this) I thought I would like the light skull, but the dark skull is more daring in my opinion 😄 Thank you for an interesting almost 12 minutes
thank you so much for your comment I really appreciate it 😊 the dark skull does look cool 💀💀

The improvised lathe was genius.

Definitely the burning skull! I missed you my friend, glad you're back with another awesome restoration!

thank you so much 😊😊
Another excellent restoration/renewing.
I keep thinking of the Firemen in the book Fahrenheit 451 -or the sledgehammers used in the movie Streets of Fire: Your axe would be welcomed in either setting. 😊
thanks I am glad you liked it. Yes it would fit in those settings 😊👍
Another excellent restoration sir. Saving the handle was very good. An engraving of Hephaestus would have been even cool, but yours is Awesome as usual. Keep up the good work Martin.
Thank you very much! Hephaestus is a really good suggestion 😊👍 have a great day my friend
How did you know I wanted the skull? I like both of them--- different and cool... Beautiful work, as usual...
I am a mind reader 😊😉Glad you liked it.
Nice to see You and your awesome works again. I really like that you left axe a bit robust. 10/10 points for the most innovative lathe I have ever seen! That actually solved one of my problems with my project.
thanks so much for watching. Glad you got inspired by my lathe 😊👍
Nice axe and great job restorating it, it doesn't need a skull at all ;)
thanks a lot 😊
thank you so much 😊
Martin, that's wicked!! Turned out rso great!! ❤❤❤❤
so happy you liked it 😊😊
thank you so much I appreciate it 😊😊
thank you I am glad you liked it
Absolutely great job. Looks very good. Just wanna have a so cool fridge in my workshop too. The waiting during the engraving was really no problem for you, I think... 😂😅😊
glad you liked it 😊 8 hours of engraving - you got time to drink a lot of beers 🍻😂
Magnificent restoration as always! Loved the flaming skull! I once saw a medieval executioner ax with ancient Arabic inscription translated as : every soul will eventually taste death! The purpose of the words are to ease the horror of the condemned and at the same time to give a morbid message to all of the punishment awaiting criminals. The inscription were very beautifully inscribed on the blade, hope you could some day make us a blade with foreign language inscription, with a less morbid message of course 😊! Thanks!
thanks a lot for your comment. Yes quite morbid. I will think about an inscription in a foreign language 😊👍
burning skull! woot.... excellent work as always Martin... aloha...✌️💜🙏🤙
thank you so much 😊💀
I love that you repair items and make them beautiful! I loved both skulls!
That laser is amazing! Your design makes me think of Ghost Rider! Badass!
You hold it with reverance. I wonder how many stories it could tell!
thank you so much for your comments I am glad you liked it 😊
Love it great job live the skulls black outline skull looks the best stands out and really pops, glad you have not lost your 10mm socket well done...
thanks so much 😊
It is so great to wake up and see a new video from Awesome Restoration - my favorite! As usual, an unbelievable job - you are so talented!!
