  • For 2023 Suzuki has updated the V-Strom with a 21" front wheel, TFT dash, quick shifter and blipper, plus a host of other electronic updates. But the real question is how do these chassis changes on the DE version effect the road holding?
    Its time to find out!!

Back in 2006 I bought a brand new vstrom for £5500, rode over 50k on it, only issues were a rear wheel bearing at 20k, and normal wear parts, when it had the valve check (late) at 40k it required zero adjustment. For comparison a brand new GS1200 was about 9k back then. I sold the vstrom for 3.5k ! Suzuki make great bikes, and they aren't a status symbol like a GS

Over the last 20 years, I've had honda's and Yamaha's, but I've never kept them long. I always go back to suzuki .
I absolutely love my current bike, a 2018 vstrom1000. It's a fantastic bike. Great brakes, great handling, and all day comfortable.
However, since my bike had its first service , it developed the dreaded idle hammer. Which comes with reduced power , increased fuel consumption and an engine that sounds like it's about to shake itself to bits... it also leads to clutch basket issues.
The forums are full of people that have the same story and the same problem 😢...... unfortunately, suzuki denies there's an issue.
Even though it's apparently caused by crank shaft end float due to incorrect machining tolerances.... Apparently suzuki have done nothing to rectify this on the new bike.
I love what they've done with the new 1050 however I'm not prepared to take the chance on the engine.
So I'm considering the 1250 gs, not cos it's a status symbol, but because the company i work get huge discounts on bmws. A basic 1250 triple black with crash bars and a 5 years service pack works out cheaper than the road spec vstrom 1050....
Sorry suzuki I think your about to loose a loyal customer.

Just like those expensive 4X4 SUV never go off the tarmac and are for show only, so the GS1200 gets parked outside cafe and never goes off-tarmac, you need to be brave to take a 600lb bike off road, especially with its tall seat.

I realize that the yellow is a nod to the motocross division but I think I would have to go with the classic Suzuki blue if I was buying. Sounds like this is more than enough bike for 90% of "adventure" riders. Being a Suzuki it will be bulletproof.

There is a trade off with the footpegs that all reviews overlook. Ive been riding the 1050XT for near a year and the footpeg position allows you to sit with two foot positions when sitting. 1. On your toes likes sport bike and 2. On your heals for cruising. So on the long open road to switch it up with foot position makes a long ride comfortable.

I'm 5'8" and my first V1K was too high for anything but tip-toes when stopped. But, found it easy to slide a bit to one side when coming to a stop which allowed one foot to be flat on the ground. Once you feel where the center of gravity is on just about any bike, it's not that big a deal. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/zYp1zXyc0fA/w-d-xo.html

Seems decent enough to me but Suzuki appear to have cut a few unnecessary corners on fit & finish etc. For example having to retrospectively pay, albeit not much, to fit the screen adjuster on the DE seems a bit annoying & frankly stingy. Although I'm sure being Suzuki you could probably convince them to chuck it in at no charge, but you shouldn't have to imo. I'm looking at buying a new V-strom 1050. Here in Sweden right now I can get a "brand new" 2021 1050XT for about 12.000 euros. And a DE would be about 16-17.000 euros. I'm 203cm or 6'9" and very heavy. Would the XT be a good fit or should I put up the extra dough for a DE? I will most likely not drive gravel or offroad much. I had an 2008 V-strom last summer and I liked a lot, but it was ever so slightly too small. And with 68.000km it wasn't in very good condition...
