So, I got into this series by mistake. I wanted Final Fantasy: Tactics- War of the Lions for my PSP but my dad got me Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. I liked the game but had no idea it was part of a series, then I found Tales of Vesperia gameplay videos online and watched some of those. I got even more interested and got that game, STILL not knowing it was part of a series until I found some Tales of the Abyss videos online. I recognized Luke and Tear on the cover of TotA from being in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, and that's when I FINALLY realized they were part of the same series. I looked into it some more and found out Tales of Vesperia was part of the same series too so I looked into the series even more and HOLY SHIT. Many Tales games later, and I'm here where I'm at today. XD
Vesperia was my favorite because the gameplay and the characters mashed so well together. Yuri's popularity was too much that he was banned from any character poll.
I play every Tales game with my sister, and she got Yuri, Raven, Rita..... I got stuck with Karol, Repede, Estelle, Judith. It's my least favorite for that reason. lol
I have not heard much about this series, but it does look like a lot of fun. Nice to see Reggie back too. His enthusiasm about the games he loves is infectious!
Love. Love. Love this video. The Tales of series is definitely one of my favorite RPG series! There is just something about the combat and story that keeps me coming back. For the most part I also dig the characters. Thanks for making this video. Hopefully more people will pay attention to this series!
The Tales of Series is of course our most favorite RPG series too, as most people obviously know, with Tales of Eternia being our number 1 favorite, and it actually has The BIGGEST collectors edition Box of them all called the Premium Box,
Glad to see your support for the Tales series. My favorite is Symphonia (first one I played), and to me it still holds up really well. Vesperia had amazing combat and a great story and same goes for Berseria.
I've put thousands of hours of my life into playing this series. It all started when my friend showed me Tales of Destiny II (Eternia) back in '04 then I picked up Symphonia then every game in the series to follow that. Legendia is my favorite in the series as well from the plot, graphics and soundtrack worked so well with each other.
Serving in Korea during 9-11. Man that's the real deal! I love seeing gamers that have such a unique perspective. That's why I subscribe to this channel.

Every time Reggie comes on I've got nothing but love. Fairly comprehensive and I love seeing someone actually enjoy the world and personality in video games, and the Tales series has always had charm to spare. Glad to see you spreading some love to one of my personal favorites. Vesperia is great but I'd agree that Tales of Graces had one of the most satisfying story arcs. The way the characters develop and grow feels really organic and the ending is probably one of my top 10 favorites of all time. Thanks, Reggie and thanks Metal Jesus for sharing him with us.

First one I played was 'Symphonia' on the NGC; it's aged like milk but it still has a place in my heart. But personally, I think 'Abyss' is the overall best in the series because the story was just incredible, it looked great(for the time), and it drastically improved the battle system for the games in the series to follow. Great video, glad to see some love for this series.
Change that. Abyss is amazing but Berseria might be even better. (Although, your experience with the story is gonna be way different if you've already played the start of Zestiria. I loved the story, but that might be because I hadn't played Zestiria yet)
Kilgore Trout Dude, I keep trying to tell people that. Anyone who says Symphonia is the best, clearly hasn't played Abyss. Abyss is just a far greater game in every single way. Actually, when I meet people in person who say Symphonia is the best, turns out it's the only Tales game they've played. Symphonia is objectively, no where near the best Tales game.
I just bought it. People say it’s very popular. I’ll see to that, but I’m kind of intrigued. I have played both Symphonias (kind of liked it, but not much), both Xillias (The Best!!!) and Tales of Graces F (which was my first ever, and still incredibly good too).
Tales of the Abyss opening song is still one of my favorites. I often pop it in my PS2 just to listen to it and watch the awesome vid. When I heard the lyrics in the anime, it really broke my heart.

Ok question - which has a better story - tales of Beseria, tales of symphonia, tales of Vasperia or final fantasy 7 - haven't found one with as good of a story as ff7 yet. I'm open to suggestions - I do own but haven't started Beseria and symphonia. Currently playing through Vasperia (stuck at some Forest puzzle thing. But might just grind till I get tidal wave before going any further)

What I loved about Tales of Legendia, is that when you finished the main storyline, a sub storyline kicks in shortly after to explore the mystery behind one of the characters.

I got Symphonia chronicles ps3 and gamecube, vesperia xbox 360 and ps3, the abyss 3ds, Graces F japanese, Xillia japanese, Xillia 2 japanese, Hearts R europe and then Zestiria europe. One of my favorite franchises of all time. Can't wait for future tales series on the PS4.
I'm so happy you and Reggie covered this series, I've just been recently getting into it. So far I've got Eternia (PSP), Vesperia, Xillia, Symphonia Chronicles, and Hearts. I'm dying to get Fraces F and Xillia to. I kind of wish this series had gotten more of a push here in America during the heyday of the Playstation 1, I feel like it would be much bigger today in America had that happened. Ah well, people just don't know what they're missing.

Glad to see Reggie on the show again. He always brings great games. Tales is a consistently good series and I think it's done a good job of preserving traditional console-style RPGs in an era where most of the alternate localized choices, from companies like Square-Enix, have been a bit lackluster (like FF 13). Never had a Tales game that I didn't like, though some are obviously better than others. I even enjoyed Dawn of the New World, even though it had its share of problems. I love the Tales gameplay and also love the soundtracks from Motoi Sakuraba. My first Tales game was Destiny on the PS1. Symphonia, on the Gamecube, is one of my favorites. I have also finished the sequel on the Wii and have the CE of the PS3 reissue. I still need to pick up a few of the games, but have played many of them. Vesperia was outstanding. Still need to play a few more recent entries and just picked up Tales of Hearts R. Many people don't know this, but the series was created by ex-Telenet Wolteam before selling their partial ownership of the series to Bandai Namco. Telenet was well-known to TurboGrafx and Sega CD gamers. Telenet went out of business shortly afterward. The creator and author of Tales of Phantasia, Yoshiharu Gotanda, left to form Tri-Ace and created the Star Ocean series. This is why the games have so many similarities. In addition to Star Ocean; If you like Tales, you should also try Eternal Sonata. It's clearly inspired by Tales (Tri-Crescendo, who created Baten Kaitos, has ties to Tri-Ace) and also had a great soundtrack from Motoi Sakuraba. Arc Rise Fantasia, for the Wii, also had some involvement from Tales alumni. Director was a writer for Tales of Symphonia. It gets some hate for its bad English localization but it was one of my favorite RPGs of the past generation. It's turn-based, rather than real-time, and the game's challenge is awesome for gamers that are sick of all of the easy RPGs. I enjoyed it far more than the highly-touted Xenoblade, but I'm in the minority.
The Tales is literally one of those jrpg series that you can pretty much expect a quality game with every game except the odd exception. I'm only missing two tales games that were lucky enough to have a north American release. I'm missing Tales of Destiny 1 and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. I'm nowhere near ready to jump into the new generation of gaming so I won't be adding tales of hearts R to the collection until a very long time. Tales of Zerestia will probably be the last tales game I'll add to the collection for a while. I've only beaten three tales games out of all of them that have been released, but one credit I will give to legendia is despite the hate it gets it doesn't have some of the best tales victory quotes of all time. Norma's the best Ever Yeah.
Oh man, the: "it's hard to get back into story-heavy RPGs after a long break" is no joke. I can't even count the RPGs I've started but just didn't finish. After the 40 hour mark I'm generally bored and want to play something different, so I take a break and play something else, then I totally forget all the little nuances and decide it would be better to just start over, but I don't because I'm too busy wanting to play something new. This is a vicious cycle. :P
I'm not going to lie, Reggie is making me a much bigger fan of this already great channel. The Tales of series is quite good. I'm so happy that it is finally being supported in the US. Actually, a lot of JRPGs are finally getting the love they deserve.

Cadillac Gamer Yeah Legendia has been sort of the black sheep of the series. I avoided it for a long time since I only heard negative things about it. Eventually bought it when it was cheap and played through it. Turned out a lot better than I was expecting. Maybe not my favorite but it is still a competent Tales game.
One thing he didn't touch on that I think is worth mentioning is the combat; hands down best combat system in a JRPG I have ever played. Vesperia is my favorite Tales overall but combat in Tales of Xillia for me was the best version though I didn't like that they took away the world map and I thought the fields and lack of exploration was disappointing.
Hector G Only thing I'd place over the Tales of series in combat system is Star Ocean, especially 3 and 4. Real time, full 3-D plain action battle system. Tales took a while to get a true 3-D free roam battle plain. Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope def has my favorite battle system of all time. Story was weaker, but battle system more than made up for it.
I never heard of this franchise till I came across it on the PlayStation store. I bought Berseria and my god it is an amazing game so far. I especially like how we aren't really the "good guys" in this game. and the emotions from velvet and the transition from her good girl self to her demon self was awesome! can't wait to find out more about this story. the developers and publishers need to make this series known worldwide!
It's unfortunate that you don't like Symphonia as IMO its the one game that is easily replayable in the series. Although I do agree that Legendia has everything else right (Soundtrack OMG, The Story is crazy good). All in all, Symphonias probably my most favorite next to Abyss, then Xillia. Graces is hella good too I think it has the best combat engine. I'm glad you all did a spotlight on this series ^__^
EmrlsCommunity Symphonia def my fav of all time. I personally found the Graces F battle system weak. My fav battle system of all time is definitely Star Ocean IV: The Last Hope International. Full roam 3-D plain real-time battle system.
EmrlsCommunity Symphonia is extremely average. I don't even have it in my top 5. The gameplay was OK but the story was average and EXTREMELY predictable. And the characters were so damn cookie cutter.
@@matthewsmith1779 + 1 dude, Symphonia was my 6th Tales of game played (after Vesperia, Zestiria, Berseria, Graces f, Xillia) and I found it to be very overrated. Mediocre story/voice acting, bad overworld travel, mediocre dialogue writing. Played Abyss right after Symphonia and washed my disapointment away, Abyss is an upgrade from Symphonia in every way and it's my second favourite after Vespie.
@@Retrogam3r88 I have noticed that when I meet someone who says symphonia is the best game in the series, it's often the only game in the series they played. GameCube owners have an overly fond memory of that game because it didn't get very many quality RPGs. I had a GC but I aslo had an Xbox and PS2. Abyss is simply a much better game in every metric you rate games on.
I only played 1/3 of Tales of Graces f on PS3 but returned it (Gamefly) because of moving. I have Tales of Xilla, but haven't had much time to sit down with content rich games lately. But I'm hoping I can enjoy it soon. I always enjoy videos when you bring Reggie and other guests on. I like seeing the different perspectives. (Plus I grew up loving the RPG genre and Reggie has good taste.)
That's a pretty unique choice. I'm working my way through the whole series as I haven't played any of the games, and Phantasia so far is pretty awesome.
Honestly, I loved Phantasia none of the others have come close imho. I'm not sure how far you are into the game but there's a slight twist which made things even more interesting.

Thanks for the video. My first Tales was Symphonia for Gamecube. That was my favorite game for years, but I didn't play the other Tales because I didn't own the systems. I just finished Graces F on PS3 though and now that's my favorite. Looking forward to Xillia and Zesteria next year too!

I first got into the tales of series when i was 13 and twelve years later i still love these damn games. I own most of the titles on the list, and each game is truly amazing. For sure my favorite rpg series.

Well tales of symphonia chronicles is those 2 games together, I don't think he needed to talk about them twice and it was worth showing the cool collector's editon too.
Graces F is a port from the wii? I thought tales of graces F was more than a port. New story arc that wasn't on the wii version and updated graphics. Also tales if graces f never came out for the wii
I only have Tales of Fantasia for the Super Famicom and Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube. I felt like Symphonia was a puzzle game with battles (and a story). Go into dungeons, solve puzzles, fight battles, progress unmemorable story. I got way bored with it. That game kind of put me off on Tales games so I never bothered with any more because I'm not a huge fan of puzzle dungeons. Link the the Past being the exception.
I would really recommend giving Xillia or Vesperia a try. The battles are quickly paced and the dungeons are a lot more straightforward. Also, if you are interested in story and characterization, both do a good job of going beyond the standard RPG tropes with some solid translation and personality. A lot less grindy than the dungeons of Symphonia.
Joe im not sure if you own a psp but if so try Tales of Eternia (ps1 remake with updated graphics) its a fantastic game great emmersive story, amazing graphics and the story dialog is fully voiced.

The Tales series is definitely my favorite JRPG series of all time. The characters and their development are something that you don't find in other RPG's.
The tales series is one I've recently begun looking at thinking whether or not I want give it a try. After watching this I think I will definitely give Xillia for ps3 a try, thanks guys. Very cool collection Reggie! I love the Tales series. I've played Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Zesteria and Tales of Beseria -- still alot of games in the series for me to play. Can't wait until they release the Tales of Vesperia Remaster :)

Tales of the Abyss opening song is still one of my favorites. I often pop it in my PS2 just to listen to it and watch the awesome vid. When I heard the lyrics in the anime, it really broke my heart.
Sucks that you didn't get into tales of symphonia because of the graphics, It's definitely my favorite RPG of all time!

Ok question - which has a better story - tales of Beseria, tales of symphonia, tales of Vasperia or final fantasy 7 - haven't found one with as good of a story as ff7 yet. I'm open to suggestions - I do own but haven't started Beseria and symphonia. Currently playing through Vasperia (stuck at some Forest puzzle thing. But might just grind till I get tidal wave before going any further)
Thanks for the video! I've been recently getting into collecting this series and don't know too much about all the games yet, so it's nice to have a video like this covering them from a fan's perspective. It seems there's a few out there I wasn't aware of yet, so I'll have to go check into those.
My favorite JRPG series: Shin Megami Tensei and The Tales series.
What I loved about Tales of Legendia, is that when you finished the main storyline, a sub storyline kicks in shortly after to explore the mystery behind one of the characters.

I got Symphonia chronicles ps3 and gamecube, vesperia xbox 360 and ps3, the abyss 3ds, Graces F japanese, Xillia japanese, Xillia 2 japanese, Hearts R europe and then Zestiria europe.
One of my favorite franchises of all time.

I'm so happy you and Reggie covered this series, I've just been recently getting into it. So far I've got Eternia (PSP), Vesperia, Xillia, Symphonia Chronicles, and Hearts. I'm dying to get Fraces F and Xillia to. I kind of wish this series had gotten more of a push here in America during the heyday of the Playstation 1, I feel like it would be much bigger today in America had that happened. Ah well, people just don't know what they're missing.

I recently started collecting the Tales games and I'm currently working on Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, surprised it took so long to find these games, I really like hearing from Reggie since he's so passionate about the series.

i actually have both versions of tales of the abyss. both the ps2 and the 3ds version. i also have legendia on ps2. so far tales of the abyss and tales of legendia were my favorite ones in the series. i haven't played the others.

Reggie's just a great guy. And honestly, I never knew this was an RPG series. I've only ever heard of Tales of Vesperia.

Tales is a consistently good series and I think it's done a good job of preserving traditional console-style RPGs in an era where most of the alternate localized choices, from companies like Square-Enix, have been a bit lackluster (like FF 13). Never had a Tales game that I didn't like, though some are obviously better than others. I even enjoyed Dawn of the New World, even though it had its share of problems. I love the Tales gameplay and also love the soundtracks from Motoi Sakuraba.
My first Tales game was Destiny on the PS1. Symphonia, on the Gamecube, is one of my favorites. I have also finished the sequel on the Wii and have the CE of the PS3 reissue. I still need to pick up a few of the games, but have played many of them. Vesperia was outstanding. Still need to play a few more recent entries and just picked up Tales of Hearts R.
Many people don't know this, but the series was created by ex-Telenet Wolteam before selling their partial ownership of the series to Bandai Namco. Telenet was well-known to TurboGrafx and Sega CD gamers. Telenet went out of business shortly afterward. The creator and author of Tales of Phantasia, Yoshiharu Gotanda, left to form Tri-Ace and created the Star Ocean series. This is why the games have so many similarities.
In addition to Star Ocean; If you like Tales, you should also try Eternal Sonata. It's clearly inspired by Tales (Tri-Crescendo, who created Baten Kaitos, has ties to Tri-Ace) and also had a great soundtrack from Motoi Sakuraba. Arc Rise Fantasia, for the Wii, also had some involvement from Tales alumni. Director was a writer for Tales of Symphonia. It gets some hate for its bad English localization but it was one of my favorite RPGs of the past generation. It's turn-based, rather than real-time, and the game's challenge is awesome for gamers that are sick of all of the easy RPGs. I enjoyed it far more than the highly-touted Xenoblade, but I'm in the minority.
Legendia is amazing! It rivals Symphonia as my favorite.

The Tales is literally one of those jrpg series that you can pretty much expect a quality game with every game except the odd exception. I'm only missing two tales games that were lucky enough to have a north American release. I'm missing Tales of Destiny 1 and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. I'm nowhere near ready to jump into the new generation of gaming so I won't be adding tales of hearts R to the collection until a very long time. Tales of Zerestia will probably be the last tales game I'll add to the collection for a while. I've only beaten three tales games out of all of them that have been released, but one credit I will give to legendia is despite the hate it gets it doesn't have some of the best tales victory quotes of all time. Norma's the best Ever Yeah.
Oh man, the: "it's hard to get back into story-heavy RPGs after a long break" is no joke. I can't even count the RPGs I've started but just didn't finish. After the 40 hour mark I'm generally bored and want to play something different, so I take a break and play something else, then I totally forget all the little nuances and decide it would be better to just start over, but I don't because I'm too busy wanting to play something new. This is a vicious cycle. :P

The Tales of series is quite good. I'm so happy that it is finally being supported in the US. Actually, a lot of JRPGs are finally getting the love they deserve.

There is a game called Brave Frontier for Android and iOS. The Japanese version of the game has the tales characters you can collect and play as.

Cadillac Gamer Yeah Legendia has been sort of the black sheep of the series. I avoided it for a long time since I only heard negative things about it. Eventually bought it when it was cheap and played through it. Turned out a lot better than I was expecting. Maybe not my favorite but it is still a competent Tales game.

Symphonia is not good. It's mediocre and EXTREMELY predictable.

One thing he didn't touch on that I think is worth mentioning is the combat; hands down best combat system in a JRPG I have ever played. Vesperia is my favorite Tales overall but combat in Tales of Xillia for me was the best version though I didn't like that they took away the world map and I thought the fields and lack of exploration was disappointing.

Hector G Only thing I'd place over the Tales of series in combat system is Star Ocean, especially 3 and 4. Real time, full 3-D plain action battle system. Tales took a while to get a true 3-D free roam battle plain. Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope def has my favorite battle system of all time. Story was weaker, but battle system more than made up for it.

I never heard of this franchise till I came across it on the PlayStation store. I bought Berseria and my god it is an amazing game so far. I especially like how we aren't really the "good guys" in this game. and the emotions from velvet and the transition from her good girl self to her demon self was awesome! can't wait to find out more about this story. the developers and publishers need to make this series known worldwide!
It's unfortunate that you don't like Symphonia as IMO its the one game that is easily replayable in the series. Although I do agree that Legendia has everything else right (Soundtrack OMG, The Story is crazy good). All in all, Symphonias probably my most favorite next to Abyss, then Xillia. Graces is hella good too I think it has the best combat engine. I'm glad you all did a spotlight on this series ^__^

EmrlsCommunity Symphonia def my fav of all time. I personally found the Graces F battle system weak. My fav battle system of all time is definitely Star Ocean IV: The Last Hope International. Full roam 3-D plain real-time battle system.

Symphonia is extremely average. I don't even have it in my top 5.
The gameplay was OK but the story was average and EXTREMELY predictable. And the characters were so damn cookie cutter.
@@matthewsmith1779 + 1 dude, Symphonia was my 6th Tales of game played (after Vesperia, Zestiria, Berseria, Graces f, Xillia) and I found it to be very overrated. Mediocre story/voice acting, bad overworld travel, mediocre dialogue writing. Played Abyss right after Symphonia and washed my disapointment away, Abyss is an upgrade from Symphonia in every way and it's my second favourite after Vespie.

I have noticed that when I meet someone who says symphonia is the best game in the series, it's often the only game in the series they played.
GameCube owners have an overly fond memory of that game because it didn't get very many quality RPGs.
I had a GC but I aslo had an Xbox and PS2.
Abyss is simply a much better game in every metric you rate games on.
I only played 1/3 of Tales of Graces f on PS3 but returned it (Gamefly) because of moving. I have Tales of Xilla, but haven't had much time to sit down with content rich games lately. But I'm hoping I can enjoy it soon. I always enjoy videos when you bring Reggie and other guests on. I like seeing the different perspectives. (Plus I grew up loving the RPG genre and Reggie has good taste.)

That's a pretty unique choice. I'm working my way through the whole series as I haven't played any of the games, and Phantasia so far is pretty awesome.
Honestly, I loved Phantasia none of the others have come close imho. I'm not sure how far you are into the game but there's a slight twist which made things even more interesting.

Thanks for the video. My first Tales was Symphonia for Gamecube. That was my favorite game for years, but I didn't play the other Tales because I didn't own the systems. I just finished Graces F on PS3 though and now that's my favorite. Looking forward to Xillia and Zesteria next year too!

Reggie sir i may have missed it, but do you own Tales of Eternia for PSP ? that is the best one in my opinion it's basically Tales of Destiny 2 (PS1) with better graphics and i believe some extra's. Best looking psp game imo.

I first got into the tales of series when i was 13 and twelve years later i still love these damn games. I own most of the titles on the list, and each game is truly amazing. For sure my favorite rpg series.

Tales of Destiny was the first JRPG i ever played that made me FEEL like I was entering another world. I still chase that feeling as a 30 year old.

Well tales of symphonia chronicles is those 2 games together, I don't think he needed to talk about them twice and it was worth showing the cool collector's editon too.

THANK YOU!!! realize this is old but i've been procrastinating on the last boss on symphonia because i don't want it to end.
I only have Tales of Fantasia for the Super Famicom and Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube. I felt like Symphonia was a puzzle game with battles (and a story). Go into dungeons, solve puzzles, fight battles, progress unmemorable story. I got way bored with it. That game kind of put me off on Tales games so I never bothered with any more because I'm not a huge fan of puzzle dungeons. Link the the Past being the exception.
I would really recommend giving Xillia or Vesperia a try. The battles are quickly paced and the dungeons are a lot more straightforward. Also, if you are interested in story and characterization, both do a good job of going beyond the standard RPG tropes with some solid translation and personality. A lot less grindy than the dungeons of Symphonia.

Joe im not sure if you own a psp but if so try Tales of Eternia (ps1 remake with updated graphics) its a fantastic game great emmersive story, amazing graphics and the story dialog is fully voiced.

The Tales series is definitely my favorite JRPG series of all time. The characters and their development are something that you don't find in other RPG's.
