- Wild camping is allowed in Norway for tents, caravans, and motorhomes, but you must follow a few simple rules that we will describe in this video. We will also mention useful resources and mobile applets that we use ourselves.
Norway is a paradise for those who love nature and peace. You can pitch your tent or park your motorhome away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Since Norway is very expensive, wild camping is a great opportunity to save money on accommodation. Sometimes these expenses make up a significant part of your trip budget.
We received many questions about the best practices for finding places for overnight stops in Norway, so we decided to make this guide. Hope this travel guide will be useful for you and if you will get any questions - write them in the comments and we will be happy to answer you!

One can also save a medium amount of money by avoiding roads with tolls, I think one passage can be over 40 NOK and they add up quickly - as far as I know there is no way to save on them as a foreigner EV or not.
It is often hard to avoid Tolls without even with some loss of time. There are even more expensive tolls. Most of them include long tunnels and bridges, like Ryfylketunnelen, Handanderbrua, but we have recently passed toll Dynna on road 4 costing 48 NOK one way.
As to EV, there are no limitations for foreign cars, so obtaining Autopass tag will help to save significantly. Worth checking with toll service providers.

I will also mention, try to avvoid using those pitstop ment for trailers. They are ment for the workers who HAVE to stop after some hours. Their semi trailers have few alternatives to stop,so its not ok to take up space where the semi's are ment to stop. Even tho tempting, since they have toilets etc. Dont do it, its not a ok thing to do. Campers have a lot more options , tho !
It shouldnt be a problem.
Im proud of our country, and if tourist respect our nature,like theese folks in the upload , then we gladly share our gorgeous scenary .

Of course, we want to help everyone to enjoy the beauty of Norway and in some cases, wild or free camping comes in handy. At the same time we hope that everyone respects the country like it's home, locals, people at work, and of course use common sense.
There are a lot of examples of bad behavior, but we can't mention them all.
But in general, in most cases rest stops for truckers are marked properly since they need more space for maneuvers as well as tourists better to have a rest, rather than bringing hazards on the road as tires drivers.

Thank you so much for the useful tips and tricks. We plan a similar trip with a caravan this summer and the links provided helped me a lot to make up my mind for wild camping as the sites are rather overpriced. Appreciate the links as well, I did not come across else where. May you clarify the average cost of overnight parking (the ones run by municipals) where we may need electricity and water refill, I`d be more than glad. Cheers!

Municipal parking places are not extremely cheap, but should give you some freedom in planning. The average cost of municipal motorhome parking is 150-250 Norwegian krone's or 15-25$ per day, but may not include electricity or water.

If you wish to meet snow and clean roads we would recommend looking for end on April or early May. What you can see on the video cover is late April of 2021. We were able to catch a warm spring weekend... a lot of sun during the day and nearly freezing at night. Still ,a advice . Do not use pit stops to camping. They are rest stops, not for spending nights in camping .
Those are needed for trailers,who cant park other places. They have their rest and work schedules.
A caravan o.a. can easy find other places to sleep.
We do not call to interfere and obstruct professional drivers to have a good rest. At the same time, any driver always prefered to take a rest rather than driving tired as it might be dangerous.
Rest stops are often designed in the way they separated trucks and private vehicles. In addition, there is guidance from Norwegian road authorities reading that the use of rest stops is not restricted to overnight stops.
Respect for rules and others is key in any case!
Hi! Good to see that you liked your trip to Norway;) A pointer from me though, it is prohibited to camp (sleep in tents, caravans etc) at rest areas along the road. Many do it, but it is not allowed. It is a rest area meant for short pauses, no overnight camping. If you see a sign that reades «Dette er en rasteplass og ikke en campingplass. Etter et kort opphold, ønsker vi deg god tur videre,» you should move on after a short stop. Use google translate if you wanna know what the sign says;) Other than that, happy camping!
Hi! The subject of the video is wild camping, camping offroad, or in the wilderness.
We don't encourage using rest stops for longer stays or as a replacement for camping sites. But in the off-season period, most of the camping sites are simply closed, and drivers forced to search for alternatives.
Using rest stops overnight is not prohibited in general unless it is marked with the sign "No camping" or limited by other regulations for maximum hours of stay or obstruct professional drivers.
In common sense, a driver without proper rest is dangerous on the road of other vehicles, passengers, and himself.
So, rest stops are not camping sites, but according to Norwegian Road Authorities guidelines, it is not illegal to sleep overnight in the car or motorhome. (Can paste a link to PDF if you like)

@@CrazyTroll My plan 15 march travel from Stockholm to navik. Rental a RV for 10 day to lofoten and 3 day to tromso. May I know how the road conditions and the weather.
Would it better to rent a car that has stick shift or automatic gears with a camper in tow? Especially when it has a lot of uphills and downhills.
this really depends on your personal preferences and what you are more comfortable driving. Norwegian roads fit both options. There are some minor pros and cons for special circumstances that may never occur. But for comfort... automatic, IMHO. And it might be difficult to get manual in rentals... =)

Camping like this is NOT respecting "wildlife". Norwegians are getting more and more fed up with this abuse of our nature. Pay for a spot at a camping and dont do this.
Camping advice for Norway is simply do not come here... Everything cost 3-5 times normal and there is other much less expensive places to go that is better where you can see the similar landscapes. Also now Norway has turned into even more of a fascistic dictatorship then normal thanks to corona hysteria.
Norway is quite expensive country, that is why we are looking for option and wish to share with traveler planning road trip to Norway. The rest is not subject of the video.
