  • Paavo Järvi sat down with us for another episode of «the art of conducting». The Estonian conductor is the chief conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the NHK Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He is also the founder and artistic director of the Pärnu Music Festival and the Estonian Festival Orchestra.
He talked to us about the conductor as teacher, his family's inside knowledge and the different ways of communicating with an orchestra.

He won't remember me of course, but he was a young man, with long blonde hair, touring with a "provincial" orchestra from Hamilton Ontario when he came to Gravenhurst. I told him I appreciated his father's fine work, but, like a buffoon I had to add to that how much I loved Barbirolli's Sibelius. He was very gracious and smiled and said, "Yes, and his Peer Gynt too is lovely". It's exciting to see him enjoying his career.
(I still have a special spot in my heart for Sir John's Sibelius because of the long, broad tempo/phrasing. And I mention it because it was something that really locked me into classical music. It's not false sentiment as "that Hurwitz" - who doesn't understand Sibelius to begin with would argue - it's because it's how Sibelius imagined it, and I know that for sure.
