- Simple arrangement for amateur choir (2001)
Donna Mitchell recently published her wonderful piano arrangement of the old spiritual "Wade in the Water" ( • Wade in the Water | Gr... ). I mentioned in a comment that I had arranged this song for my choir at the time, and Donna replied that she would have loved to hear it. So now I've done my arrangement with virtual voices so Donna can hear it.
I conducted a church choir from about 1990 to 2002. They were amateur singers, many of whom couldn't even read music. So it had to be a very simple arrangement back then.
The current implementation with virtual voices is not perfect, but it was also very difficult. You can't have polyphony and melismas sung with the program. So I had to realize each voice individually and mix them together afterwards. So please bear with me. Please use headphones, otherwise the bass will not be audible.

Oh wow, incredible vocals. Parts of the song sound like it has Gospel influence and parts, I have heard in the past but don't know how to describe. Getting similar feel to the baptism scene in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?".
Thanks so much! You're right about that. The song itself is an old spiritual. Gospel has its roots in this. I tried to capture the musical spirit with my arrangement.
Now I'm really amazed at what's possible 😲 It sounds really great, even if it's virtual voices.

Thanks for doing this incredible version of your choral arrangement, Stefan! I am a huge fan of the genre and to hear the lyrics in a pared down form is such a delight. It reminds me of the sound of Pentatonix group but the added instrument really makes it even better. Great harmony for the altos, tenors and bass and the headphones really helped me hear and take it all in. Using virtual voice must be a challenge as you wrote but I really want to try this for my "Life is a Stream" SATB piece soon. Very inspiring. I also heard Kate's rendition yesterday and loved it!

@@stefan.kraus-composer They could not sue you because the original is in the public domain! I may have to ask for your input, suggestions on getting that piece put together with a virtual voicing. It does sound a bit complicated. Did you do the score with Musescore or some other way because I can upload my original to Musescore and go from there I guess. It has violin and piano also.
@@donnamitchell7composerarranger There were a few detours. First, I entered my handwritten score into Musescore. Then I exported voice by voice as MIDI and imported and edited voice by voice into Dreamtonics' free version of Synthesizer V. Then I recorded voice by voice and imported it into Audacity, edited and mixed it. The instruments are from Musescore, which I mixed. A lot of work, but the result is a bit fun.

Das würde ich lieber mit echten oder mit richtig verfremdeten Stimmen (Vocoder) hören. Aber diese sind gerade so ein bisschen echt, das muss der uncanny valley Effekt sein. Das Arrangement selbst gefällt mir gut.
Es ist ja nur ein alter Chorsatz von mir. Da ich den Chor seit mehr als 20 Jahren nicht mehr leite, habe ich das halt virtuell für Donna umgesetzt. Ich bin dankbar, dass es solche Möglichkeiten heute gibt, auch wenn sie nicht perfekt sind. Danke!
