460,000 tons. 🎉👍 I'm imagining what it would be like if you gave the U boat Aces a super sub of their choice like Seawolf, Yasen, type 212. The tonnage and strategy would be crazy.
I believe the 33kt merchants are designed to travel across the entire Pacific, and yes, time is money. Even at 33kts it would take a week at best to travel that span. That was a well fought, hard fought battle. It's been a while since you were the meat in a torpedo soup. It was certainly entertaining. It's been a pleasure watching this series, Tortuga.
It's always fun to have you along, Blinson (and I know I repeat myself, but it's the truth). Fascinating about fast freighter. I would have thought the expense of maintaining and even fueling such a ship would be prohibitive, but maybe not.
at 3:40, the first torpedo you hear, seems to be not a torpedo, but a SUBROC (SS-N-16 Stallion), sub-launched air-dropped torpedo, which swims out of the torpedo tube to the surface (similar to Harpoon), then fires its rocket motor, flies to whatever position was designated, and airdrops a torpedo. So, you can't really deduce where the launching sub is from the position of the drop. You can distinguish these because they are going in circles initially, while "normal" torpedoes go either straight or snakewise until they acquire you. Also if you have any ice, SUBROC cannot hit you if you are under ice, or if the launching sub is under ice. Congratulations on a well played mission.
Yep, that's what I was thinking after there were no contacts in that direction. It was a wasted snapshot, but I don't think it was a bad idea because the Yasen could have been too quiet to hear.
@@TortugaPower I'm always thinking about it this way - an incoming regular torpedo gives you an idea where the enemy is; a SUBROC gives you exact position where they think _you_ are. After which you can expect a sonobuoy drop near there (if MPAs), helo dip (if helos), and also regular torpedoes heading to that point.
Also, no one ever called King Arthur a tyrannic despot (except maybe his nephew and cousin). Oftentime, people argue whether or not democracy, communism, or what have you is the better government style, when the fact is, it's the people in charge of it that end up determining whether its a great place to live or not. Various governments just differ in a matter of who, and how many, people get to be in charge.
That's true, but there is a general consensus about "rule of the people" being more likely to avoid the more negative (and brutal) possibilities from more authoritarian governments (like despotism).
Am quite late to discover this game, so forgive my over a year later responses. Thanks for letting me relive my youthful days playing Redstorm Rising from sometime between 1988-1992? It was very similar to your modern version of Cold Waters gameplay. The cool thing was they( RR ) introduced the anti-aircraft submarine to air missile called the "Stinger". The naval wars was set in the Atlantic and Baltics. So anyway, I watched the whole series you made of CWs from episode 1-22, and felt there's enough reliving the ol' modern sub warfares gameplay vicariously through your enjoyable gameplays that it saves me from diving( no pun intended ) into it myself. I was disappointed for few lackings in the game that you have already highlighted and touched upon. Price of the game is quite cheap so that's not the issue, but the investing the needed time to play it is not worth it by having played it vicariously through you; so thanks for taking us through the play trials! 👍
Xia list to get readdy for open seas: you MUST go 5 knots, check north and south, check out some islands, but don't damage them, wait for new orders, while waiting, please disable your propultion unless of orders say to, check your torpetos and other weapons, go back to base to check one nuclear fuel reserves,
1st time watching full series would love to see some silent hunter or uboat or hell even a game where you hunt the sub not sure If a realistic one exists but love the series cant wait for next one
I think we'll be doing some Dangerous Waters, which is similar to this and SH and Uboat -- it's Cold War era submarine action, but you can also be an ASW ship or aircraft.
Nicely done! It's a shame that the Akulas never proved to be much of a threat. Unfortunately the AI is very bad at counter-firing when they manage to evade one of your torpedos, which sadly detracts from the tension you want from the last mission!
I think the 33kt Container ship is an SL-7 built in the 1970s for Sea-Land Service. They were taken over by the Military Seaport Command in the 1980s, and were used as Fast Role On/Roll Off Sealift ships.
You seemed surprised by the merchant ship going fast, but some of them definitely can. Their issue as I learned about it is that it takes a long time to speed up or slow down and it makes it difficult to steer, so they only really go that fast on long stretches where they need to go straight. Military ships need to maneuver and be in formation and all the things fighting implies. A merchant only needs to get from port A to port B without crashing into things
That was one helluva fight. I was thinking of writing a role play to wrap things up, but there's too much going on to even get close. Very busy, very exciting. While I appreciate the carefully planned and executed stealth missions, there is something entertaining about watching you scramble once the fecal matter hits the air circulation engine. Congratulations on a very successful campaign! You've done a tour as a junior officer and as a department head. Ready for your XO tour? I enjoy anything naval, especially anything submarine related. Dangerous Waters sounds like fun, as do some of the WW2 submarine games. I also enjoy Rule the Waves. Did you ever decide which nation your next RTW2 campaign will be?
Many thanks, gascan. This last mission is always a torpedo dodging affair (I'm not sure how you'd even do it in the Narwhal or other slow sub). For RtW it's going to be Japan, and that will start the moment the current succession series ends.
@@TortugaPower gascan took the words outta my mouth, so i share his sentiment. Thanks for a great serie Torptuga! Also, looking forward to your next RTW2 campaign Even though i had seen quite alot of Cold Waters from other youtubers a while back, i ended up really enjoying the process of identifying contacts etc after following your series. Coupled with the various explanations/teachings from you (and the two submariners in the comment section). SUBsequently your Dangerous Waters stream further amplified my interest and it was a nice change of pace to watch from the seahawk/surface ship/subhunter's viewpoint! Hrm, as for naval games other than RTW2 & dangerous waters... good question. UBOAT did get a substantial patch recently but id wait a lil longer. Im hearing murmurs of Wolfpack again recently but idk anything about it other than its coop element. Whilst exciting to see so many naval games being developed including UA:Dreadnoughts/Age of Sail, they are just that, in development/early access atm. Satisfactory(3D Factorio-lite) too if i were to mention something outside of the naval genre. Not sure on your stance when it comes to covering early access games Torpitz.
I believe that fast merchant ship that can go 33 knots was a Algol-class Vehicle Cargo Ship. They are the fastest cargo ships ever built as of current, with a top speed of 33 knots. However, they were pretty expensive to operate, making these ships not as profitable as other merchants. They were built in 1972-1973, and 8 of them were built. They are currently in active service.
I plan to start playing a bit of Dangerous Waters, which is very similar to Cold Waters and Silent Hunter (it's like a realistic Cold Waters, or a Cold-War era Silent Hunter).
Let's be real, if one went hunting for five nuclear cruise missile submarines that got sunk in a battle, they'd get arrested in the first nation they made it to port in.
The US would probably already be on top of the site before the war is over considering how they would already know the coordinates, and it would probably be heavily classified until the site was salvaged
I’m not going to lie, I was not a fan of this series. I’m glad it’s over. When are we going to see you play More Shortest Trip to earth? I’ve been asking for months lol! Also, Gary Grigsby’s Eastern Front would be an interesting watch.
Very impressive that you decided to stick it out, but of course no need to watch stuff you don't like too much. @@chiefJwally Haha. I don't either, except for a rare sports game. TH-cam and TV, hard to really distinguish any more, so why not watch the one that has my interests (like wargames) and is free.
I think it's a matter of the objective. Assuming that this obviously-fantasy narrative is true (a Seawolf sinks dozens of warships and subs), China would realize they can't project power where they want, and probably call to an end to hostilities. This isn't a surrender from the sense that the mainland is surrendering.

To answer your question at 29:27:
The Emma Maersk has a top speed of 50km/h or 26.997 knots.
61.1km/h is still pretty quick for a large boat.

29:30 why do you think they go fast, I think it's to get payload quickly so it can transport more in a given amount of time
Probably when cargo is needed to be very quickly delivered, but is still too big for a cargo plane.
